Cummins bowls first at start of his ODI captaincy; Luke Wood handed England debut

Australia decided to bowl against England

New Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl against England in the ODI series opener in Adelaide.

Cummins has recovered from a bout of gastro to start his ODI captaincy having taken over from Aaron Finch, who has retired from the format.

Australia are looking to rebound in the three-match series after a disappointing T20 World Cup title defence with Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne and wicketkeeper Alex Carey coming into the team. Head has been given first crack to replace Finch as opener in front of his home faithful.

Australia selected two frontline spinners with left-armer Ashton Agar named alongside Adam Zampa, while quick Josh Hazlewood missed selection. They are without the injured Glenn Maxwell who suffered a broken leg last week.

Just four days after winning the T20 World Cup, England have attempted to freshen up the team with just three players named from the XI who played against Pakistan in the final.

Opener Jason Roy returns and he will be aiming to spark what might be a sluggish England team trying to shake out of partying mode. Left-arm seamer Luke Wood will make his ODI debut having played two T20Is in Pakistan in September, while paceman Olly Stone will play his first ODI in four years.

The pitch in Adelaide is expected to favour batting amid sunny conditions with a low crowd tipped for a series receiving little fanfare in the lead up.

Australia 1 Travis Head, 2 David Warner, 3 Steve Smith, 4. Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Alex Carey (wk),6 Cameron Green, 7 Marcus Stoinis, 8 Ashton Agar, 9 Pat Cummins (capt), 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Adam Zampa

England 1 Jason Roy, 2 Phil Salt, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 James Vince, 5 Sam Billings, 6 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 7 Liam Dawson, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 David Willey, 10 Luke Wood, 11 Olly Stone
