Toss New Zealand chose to bat vs Pakistan
Tim Southee began the New Year by winning the toss and choosing to bat in the second Test against Pakistan in Karachi. New Zealand made one change to their XI from the first Test, replacing left-arm fast bowler
Neil Wagner with right-arm quick
Matt Henry.
Wagner took only one wicket in the first Test, having bowled 21 overs in the first innings and only three in the second. Henry will be playing only his third Test match in Asia, and his first since the tour of India in 2016.
Pakistan made two changes to their team, bringing in fast bowlers
Hasan Ali and Naseem Shah in place of Mohammad Wasim and left-arm spinner
Nauman Ali. Wasim had taken one wicket in 25.3 overs in the first Test, while Ali had sent down 63 overs for three wickets in New Zealand's first innings and did not bowl in the second.
The pitch was a different surface from the one used for the first Test in Karachi and had more grass and moisture.
The
first Test had ended in a draw, with
Babar Azam making a surprise declaration late on the fifth day, setting New Zealand a target of 138 in 15 overs. The visitors had raced to 61 for 1 in 7.3 overs before bad light ended the match. The result meant that Pakistan had failed to win a Test at home in 2022 - four losses and three draws - and will aim to begin the New Year on a positive note.
