Aldershot claim both team titles, led by Alex Pointon and Pippa Roessler

Frank Baddick and Dani Chattenton (pictured) have been confirmed as individual winners of the inaugural England Athletics Virtual 5km Championships.

Aldershot won both team titles thanks to Alex Pointon (14:18), Joe Morwood (14:26) and Jack Boswell (14:51) for the men and Pippa Roessler (17:00), Lesley Locks (17:28) and Katriona Brown (17:32) for the women.

That was not the end of Aldershot’s success as Roessler won under-17 gold and Brown the under-20 title.

In the M50 category, world masters track champion Mark Symes showed his endurance is improving as he won gold in 15:16, which was quicker than the M45 title-winning time by Andy Bond.

Baddick, who was 10th in the Inter-Counties cross country in March, has a best for the distance of 14:03.86 on the track but here was 20 seconds quicker. That gave him a five-second advantage over Tom Evans, who had been third in that cross country race at Loughborough.

Evans’ own best ever previous legal 5km/5000m is 15:01.1, though he has run a 14:45 parkrun.

Adam Hickey, who was runner-up at Loughborough, took the individual bronze with a time of 13:56.

Chattenton was far more dominant in the women’s event.

The Milton Keynes Distance Project athlete, who was fourth in the women’s race at Loughborough, has a 15:53.25 5000m PB from last summer but clearly a much improved athlete she blasted to a time of 15:14, which suggests she could be challenging for an Olympic place with the qualifying standard being 15:10.

She had 45 seconds in hand over Holly Archer, with W35 gold medallist Danielle Hodgkinson taking the senior bronze.

Other notable age-group women’s winners included Olympian Aly Dixon, who won W40 gold in 16:40, plus British masters athlete of the year Clare Elms, who won W55 gold in 18:23 in a time quicker than the W50 winner Sue McDonald, W50 UK marathon record-holder Jo Thompson, who won W60 gold in 19:57, and 1976 Olympian Penny Forse, who won the W70 title in 22:40.

Other notable men’s age-group winners included under-23 Tom Mortimer, who ran 14:00, former National medallist Andy Coley-Maud, who won the M35 crown in 14:17, and world masters marathon record-holder Tommy Hughes, who won the M60 gold in 16:27.

The T20 para winners were Kieran O’Hara, who ran 16:47, and Hannah Taunton, who ran 17:10, while Darren Westlake won the T12 title with 17:10.
