Olympic shot put champion moves to equal third on the world all-time list, while Andrew Pozzi clocks another 110m hurdles world lead in Savona and Katarina Johnson-Thompson opens her season
Athletics competition continues to make a comeback and here we highlight some of the top recent results from around the world.
American Track League Summer Series, Marietta, Georgia, USA, July 18
The USA’s Olympic shot put champion Ryan Crouser threw 22.15m, 22.24m, 22.73m and then a PB of 22.91m in Georgia to add one centimetre to his PB set during last year’s high-quality world championships final.
The mark puts him equal third on the world all-time list alongside world champion Joe Kovacs and 1984 Olympic champion Alessandro Andrei.
Katie Nageotte cleared 4.83m to win the pole vault and add one centimetre to her outdoor PB.
Papendal, Netherlands, July 18
European under-20 champion Femke Bol set another Dutch 400m hurdles record and world lead, with the 20-year-old, who only took up the event last year, clocking 53.79.
Savona, Italy, July 16
After running 13.44 in Rieti, Britain’s Andrew Pozzi ran another world-leading time of 13.30 (+1.6m/sec) in the 110m hurdles.
European under-20 champion Larissa Iapichino set an Italian under-20 long jump record of 6.80m.
That mark moves her to 10th on the European under-20 all-time list, one place behind her mother, Fiona May.
Osterode, Germany, July 18
British discus record-holder Lawrence Okoye, who made his athletics comeback last year after focusing on American football, threw 63.02m for his best mark since leaving the sport in 2012.
His series also included a 62.12m throw.
Britain’s Jade Lally threw a ‘post baby PB’ with a discus mark of 58.76m, following the birth of her daughter last year, while Kirsty Law threw 53.88m.
Montpellier, France, July 16
Britain’s world heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson contested two events as she made her season opener, clocking 23.65 in the 200m and throwing 12.50m in the shot put.
The Bigger Friendly, Portland, USA, July 18
Britain’s Josh Kerr made a winning return to competition as he clocked 2:17.60 in the 1000m. His fellow Briton Jake Heyward finished fourth in 2:18.55.
The USA’s Shannon Rowbury won the 3000m in 8:40.26, while Germany’s Konstanze Klosterhalfen dropped down to race 1000m and clocked a PB of 2:37.05.
Botswana’s Nijel Amos won the 600m in 1:15.86.
Velocity Fest, Kingston, Jamaica, July 18
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won the 200m in 22.74 (-0.9m/s), while Elaine Thompson-Herah won the 100m in 11.19 (-0.8m/s).
The men’s 100m was won by Julian Forte in 10.03 (+0.3m/s) and the 200m by Yohan Blake in 20.62 (-0.8m/s).
World long jump champion Tajay Gayle leapt 8.13m.
Hokuren Distance series, Chitose, Japan, July 18
Ryuji Miura won the men’s 3000m steeplechase in a Japanese under-20 record of 8:19.37, just missing the senior national record. Kenya’s Philemon Kiplagat Ruto was second in 8:19.60.
Kenya’s Titus Wanbua ran 13:17.40 for 5000m, with Japan’s Hyuga Endo second in 13:18.99. Finishing sixth, Yamato Yoshii broke the Japanese under-20 record with 13:28.31, while another race saw 17-year-old Kosuke Ishida run 13:36.89.
World under-20 champion Nozomi Tanaka won the 3000m in 8:51.49 from Kenya’s Joan Kipkemoi with 8:57.20.
