Daniel Stahl throws 71.37m in Sollentuna – weekly round-up

Global highlights from the past week in athletics

Sollentuna Grand Prix, Sweden, August 10

World champion Daniel Stahl launched the discus out to a world-leading 71.37m on home soil for his second best ever mark and the 14th best ever in the world.

His third-round attempt was initially judged to be a foul before the mark was reinstated. He also threw 68.38m in the first round.

Kalle Berglund broke the Swedish record in the 2000m, running 4:59.71 ahead of his compatriot Andreas Almgren (5:00.23) as Britain’s Neil Gourley placed third in 5:00.73 which puts him second on the Scottish all-time list.

Andreas Kramer was another winner on home soil as he clocked 1:45.05 to get close to his Swedish 800m record and hold off the British trio of Elliot Giles (1:45.46), Jake Wightman and Daniel Rowden (both 1:45.55), with this race being Rowden’s first since 2018.

Esther Guerrero won the women’s race, clocking a PB of 2:00.56 ahead of Britain’s Adelle Tracey with 2:01.98.

Daryll Neita won the 100m in 11.65 (-1.5m/s), while Samuel Garcia won the men’s 400m in 47.17 as Rabah Yousif was third in 47.65 and the women’s 400m was won by Moa Hjelmer in 53.50 as Emily Diamond was third in 54.27.

Angelica Bengtsson won the pole vault with a clearance of 4.64m, while Leonardo Fabbri won the shot put with 21.57m.

Podium 5km, Barrowford, Lancashire, August 8

Marc Scott stormed to a British record of 13:20 to just miss the European best. Alex Yee was also under the previous UK record time with 13:26.

Yee’s fellow triathlete Beth Potter was also in impressive form as she won the elite women’s race in 15:24 to move to fifth on the UK all-time list.

Velocity Fest, Kingston, Jamaica, August 8/9

World champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce clocked a 100m world lead of 10.87 (+1.4m/sec) while in another race Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah ran 10.88 (+0.3m/s).

Both athletes were in 200m action the following day and Thompson-Herah clocked 22.19 (+0.7m/s), while another race saw Fraser-Pryce run 22.57 (+0.9m/s).

Shanieka Ricketts won the triple jump with a leap of 14.21m, while Fedrick Dacres claimed discus victory with 64.45m.

In the 400m Janieve Russell ran 51.74 ahead of Shericka Jackson with 51.76, while Stephenie-Ann McPherson won another race in 52.20.

Brussels Grand Prix, Belgium, August 9

British indoor 400m champion Jessie Knight moved to 10th on the UK all-time 400m hurdles list with a PB of 55.27. Her compatriot Lina Nielsen finished fourth in 58.90.

In his first 200m race in almost three years, Danny Talbot triumphed in 21.00 (+0.1m/s).

Bournemouth, England, August 9

Rebecca Chapman, who won UK long jump silver in 2017, jumped 6.51m (+0.5m/s) for her longest leap since that medal-winning 6.54m three years ago and backed it up with a 6.48m (+2.0m/s) leap.

Sarah Abrams jumped 6.31m, while James Lelliott leapt 7.85m and Jack Roach 7.83m.

Swiss Combined Events Championships, Langenthal, August 9

Simon Ehammer improved his PB by more than 200 points to win the decathlon title with a world-leading score of 8231 points.

Annik Kalin retained her heptathlon title with a score of 6167 points.

Kristiansand, Norway, August 7

Sondre Nordstad Moen went further than the European record distance of 21,131m for one hour on the track, improving on Jos Hermens’ 20,944m from 1976. The mark may not be ratified as a record as there were later queries on the shoes he was wearing, following World Athletics’ recent footwear rules update.

German Championships, Brunswick, August 9

The 2017 world champion Johannes Vetter won the javelin with 87.36m, while world champion Malaika Mihambo won the long jump with 6.71m (-1.2m/s) as she leapt off a shortened approach.

Czech Championships, August 9

The 2017 world under-18 champion Barbora Malikova won the 400m ahead of Lada Vondrova, with the 18-year-old clocking 51.65 for a Czech under-20 record to Vondrova’s 51.90.

Big Friendly 4, Portland, USA, August 8

Nijel Amos won the 800m in 1:49.23 to pip Josh Kerr with 1:49.29. Jake Heyward ran 1:50.43 for fifth.

Chanelle Price won the women’s 800m in 2:02.93.

Skolimowska Throws Festival, Spala, Poland, August 8

European champion Wojciech Nowicki won the hammer competition from four-time world champion Pawel Fajdek, throwing 78.50m to Fajdek’s 76.77m.

Malwina Kopron threw 74.18m to win the women’s competition.

Michal Haratyk won the men’s shot put with 21.45m to Konrad Bukowiecki’s 20.36m, while Piotr Malachowski won the discus with a throw of 64.87m.

Trafford Open Series, Stretford, August 8

Lawrence Okoye continued his comeback with 64.85m for the longest discus throw by a British athlete in Britain since 2013.

Jade Lally won the women’s event from Kirsty Law, 57.86m to 57.24m.

Former national under-20 triple jump champion Kevin Metzger ran a 46.74 400m.
