Bangladesh 70-3 (Mominul 32*, Rahim 1*, Muzarabani 2-5) vs Zimbabwe
Bangladesh recovered from Blessing Muzarabani's blustery opening spell on the first morning of their Test against Zimbabwe, going in to lunch at 70 for 3. The tall quick bowler had figures of 5-2-5-2 and he had reduced the visitors to 8 for 2 in the fifth over. But a 60-run third wicket stand between Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam provided some stability thereafter.
Muzarabani nailed Saif Hassan in the first over, clean bowling him with a sharply moving inswinger that crashed into the right-hander's offstump. Saif's lack of foot movement kept him legside of the ball, although Muzarabani had telegraphed his intention in the first four balls.
He struck again in the fifth over when Najmul Hossain Shanto gave debutant Dion Myers a simple catch at third slip. Shanto has now been caught behind the wicket six times in five Tests this year.
But to Bangladesh's credit, the recovery was swift too. Haque struck left-arm quick Richard Ngarava for two fours in the eighth over to open up their scoring, before glancing a couple more through midwicket off Victor Nyauchi and Donald Tiripano.
Islam's first three fours weren't convincing before he laced Tiripano for a straight drive in the 16th over. But when he had moved to 23, Ngarava found his edge, caught by stand-in captain Brendan Taylor at first slip.
There was one more hairy moment for Bangladesh towards the end of the first session when Ngavara struck Rahim on his fingers with a rising delivery. After attention from the team doctor, Rahim played out the last ball comfortably.
Bangladesh's captain Haque had earlier called correctly at the toss, deciding to bat first. The two sides chose contrasting bowling attacks, with the home side going for a four-man pace attack while the visitors opted for two pacers and two spinners.
Zimbabwe are without regular captain Sean Williams and Craig Ervine after both had to self-isolate following coming into contact with relatives who are Covid-19 positive. Both players had returned to the Test side after injury layoffs.
Bangladesh are without the experienced Tamim Iqbal, who is out with a knee injury, although Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Shadman Islam have returned to the line-up. Zimbabwe have handed Test debuts to Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Myers.
