I'd carry water if I could make a difference - Conan

"I've been bouncing in every day. It's an incredible privilege."

After an 11-month absence from the green jersey, Ireland's Jack Conan wasted little time in getting back up to speed.

Bench impact was one of the keys to victory in the 27-22 win over England that kicked off the side's Six Nations title defence on Saturday, with the Leinster number 8 to the fore having been introduced in the 50th minute.

Having missed last summer's tour to South Africa for the birth of his first child and then Ireland's entire November slate through injury, the 32-year-old looked like he had never been away, yet said he had felt the time keenly.

"I hadn't played [for Ireland] since 16 March last year, 11 odd months," he said.

"Obviously expecting a baby, that was far more important than rugby, but missing November with an injury, you miss the environment, you miss the craic, you miss the lads.

"When you get a bit older, you realise that probably most of your good days are behind you, so I just want to make the most of every chance I get and I feel like I did that."

Clinton County Speedway To Host Two 410 Sprint Car Events

Published in Racing
Monday, 03 February 2025 04:18

MILL HALL, Pa. The 410 sprint car drivers have spoken highly of the recent race events over the last few years hosted at the Clinton County Speedway.

Race Promoter Jason McCahan took the opportunity on Saturday at the Racing Xtravagana Show in York to give the 410 sprint car drivers even more reason to be talking about the third-mile oval.

The speedway recently learned that it received a tourism grant from the Clinton County Tourism Agency and the Clinton County government, said McCahan. As a result of the added funding, our July 11th 410 sprint car event will now pay $7,500 to win.

The speedways 410 events have attracted drivers from several different states, which was important to the tourism agency.   This year, we will have two high-profile 410 sprint car shows the $7,500 to win show on Friday, July 11 and the annual Phil Walter Classic paying $6,300 on Saturday Aug. 9. Both events will pay $500 to take the green flag.

In addition to these two events, the speedway will again be the opening event for the annual Appalichian Mountain Super Late Model Speedweek event on Friday June 6. Clinton County hosted one of the stronger car counts for the weeks event that travels throughout the state visiting a different track each night.

The United Racing Club 360 Sprints will also be returning to the speedway on May 16 and the USAC East Coast Sprints will be back on June 27.

The RaceSaver Sprint Cars and Limited Late Models continued to highlight the weekly events at the speedway. The Pro Stocks, 270 Micros, and 4 Cylinders are part of the weekly show.

The official season opener is scheduled for Sunday afternoon on April 6 with the RaceSaver Sprints, IMCA Modifieds, Pro Stocks, 270 Micros and Four Cylinders.

Berry Races His Way Into Clash, Shows Promise

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Josh Berry and the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing team did themselves and their car owners proud in Sundays Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Racing at the legendary track that is so special to the Wood Brothers, Berry put on a spirited, aggressive performance in the 75-lap Last Chance Qualifier to finish second and put the No. 21 Mustang in the 200-lap Main event. Berry then started 22nd in the feature and raced his way to 13th despite some damage from his hard drive to second place in the LCQ.

Berry said after the non-points-paying exhibition that he considered his first drive in the No. 21 Mustang a success and an enjoyable experience on the tight quarter-mile track where the late team owner Glenn Wood counted four points-paying Cup races among his 29 overall victories there.

It was a lot of fun, Berry said. I thought the guys did a really good job of making the car better and adjusting on it from practice and the heat race to give me a really good car for the feature.

Berry mentioned he was a bit disappointed he didnt finish higher.

I felt like we definitely had more potential there, he said. I wish things would have gone different in the feature, but overall Im really happy with it. Our goal was to come here and make the race, and we did that and got a decent finish. For the first time out it was a lot of fun.

Berrys performance in the Last Chance Qualifier was a big part of the story of that race.

After starting 13th, he initially dropped back one spot before working his way into the top 10 on lap 21. He steadily worked his way forward and cracked the top five for the first time on lap 59. Berry, finding success in both the inside and outside lanes, took the lead on lap 66 as Erik Jones and Kyle Larson, Berrys chief rivals at that point, collided and brought out the races seventh caution.

Berry held the top spot for six laps but lost the lead to Larson with four laps remaining. Berry held the runner-up spot to the checkered flag, and the races last lead change wasnt a big factor as both the first- and second-place finishers advanced to the 200-lap main event.

After the qualifier, he told reporters at the track that he was very pleased to get the Wood Brothers car in the main event at Bowman Gray.

This is a really special place for them, he said. They gave me a great opportunity, and they deserve to be in this race. They are great people and have been in the sport for 75 years, and Im going to go out there and do my best week-in and week-out.

If that means I have to knock some people around to get in the Clash Im going to do it.

Reports: Jackets forward's jaw broken on bench

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kirill Marchenko suffered a broken jaw after getting hit in the face by a puck while on the bench during Sunday's loss to the Dallas Stars, according to multiple media reports.

Defenseman Dante Fabbro also left the game in the first period with a concussion, according to reports.

Marchenko, who has a team-leading 21 goals in addition to 34 assists for the Blue Jackets this season, was sitting on the bench when the stray puck struck the left side of his face late in the second period. He left the bench area, holding a towel to his jaw.

He was taken to a Dallas-area hospital to have his jaw reset, according to reports. It was unclear how much time he would miss, but it could be at least six weeks.

The 24-year-old is enjoying a breakout season, already setting career highs in assists, points (55) and ice time (18:48) in just 53 games. His plus-31 rating leads the NHL.

The team said Fabbro has suffered an upper-body injury.

The Blue Jackets, who have won three of their past four games, conclude a four-game road trip on Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres. Columbus sits in the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, just a point ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins, entering Monday's games.

Sam Kerr racially abused police officer, court told

Published in Soccer

Chelsea forward and Australia captain Sam Kerr went on trial in a London court on Monday, accused of racially abusing a white police officer after a drunken dispute with a taxi driver.

Kerr told the officer Stephen Lovell: "You guys are f---ing stupid and white."

Kerr, who has Indian ancestry, accepts saying those words but has pleaded not guilty to one count of racially aggravated harassment. Her lawyer argued she was making a comment about power and privilege.

The 31-year-old sat in the dock at Kingston Crown Court as prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones told jurors that she and her partner Kristie Mewis, who plays for West Ham United, called a taxi in the early hours of Jan. 30, 2023 after a night out.

"Their cab journey did not go well," Emlyn Jones said.

"The cabbie ended up phoning the police to complain about their behaviour, reporting that they were trying to smash a window".

The taxi driver took them to a police station instead of Kerr's home, after which she made the comment about Lovell's ethnicity, Emlyn Jones said.

He added that there was no dispute over what Kerr said, meaning jurors had to decide what she meant and how it made Lovell feel.

Kerr's lawyer Grace Forbes said that Kerr's words did not make her a criminal. "The law is a little more nuanced, a little more human than that," she argued.

"Sam Kerr did not feel hostility to the officer because he is white. The words were a comment, we say -- however poorly expressed -- about positions of power, about privilege and about how those things might colour perception."

Kerr has scored 199 career goals across the Women's Super League, Australia's W-League and the NWSL.

She is also Australia's all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 128 appearances, but has been sidelined since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2024.

Her trial is expected to conclude this week.

Source: Joao Félix set for Milan loan from Chelsea

Published in Soccer
Monday, 03 February 2025 09:47

AC Milan are closing in on a loan deal for Chelsea forward João Félix, a source has told ESPN.

The 25-year-old is expected to move to Italy in an agreement which would see Milan pay a loan fee in the region of 2m-3m ($2m-$3m). The Serie A club would also be paying all of his wages.

Félix had attracted interest from several other clubs including Aston Villa but Chelsea's preference has always been for the Portugal international to join a club outside England.

Félix only joined Chelsea last August in a 50m deal from Atlético Madrid to begin his second spell at the club after spending the second half of the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Stamford Bridge.

However, Félix has started just three Premier League games under head coach Enzo Maresca and is keen on kickstarting his career at a new club.

Should a deal by finalised, Félix will become Milan's second signing in the current window after Kyle Walker's arrival from Manchester City.

Wrexham unveil plans for 5,500-capacity stand

Published in Soccer
Monday, 03 February 2025 09:47

Wrexham have released images of their new plans for a Kop stand at their home ground, the Stok Racecourse.

The "unique designs" for the new 5,500-capacity stand are said to create an atmospheric home and become an iconic destination for fans, international visitors and the local community.

The stand, designed by leading sports and entertainment architects Populous, includes the provision for safe standing, hospitality and accessible seating and will be a prominent focal point of the area visible from the city centre.

It will be fully compliant with UEFA Category 4 stadium requirements and along with adjustment to the pitch, and other technical requirements, this will enable the Stok Racecourse Stadium to host the UEFA European under-19 Championship final tournament matches in 2026, and other international matches in the future.

"The new Kop Stand marks a special moment in the history of the STōK Cae Ras," Wrexham's chief executive officer Michael Williamson said.

"The distinctive design of the new Kop Stand embodies the history and heritage of Wrexham -- rooted in the local community creating a timeless, authentic piece of civic architecture that complements other landmarks.

"It will provide an iconic landmark standing at the gateway to the city giving it a true sense of place.

"The stand reflects the key role the football club can play in the rejuvenation and redevelopment of the city through its role in the Wrexham Gateway Project.

"The upgrading of facilities to meet UEFA Category 4 specifications are central to our wider vision of bringing international sport back to Wrexham and the benefit this will bring to the local community of hosting these events in North Wales."

Sources: Tel set to join Spurs on loan after U-turn

Published in Soccer
Monday, 03 February 2025 09:47

Mathys Tel is set to perform a dramatic deadline day U-turn by agreeing a loan deal to join Tottenham after stalling over a move to the club last week, sources have told ESPN.

The player's representative, Gadiri Camara, shared a picture on Instagram of himself on an airplane along with Tel and sources say their destination is Spurs after a breakthrough in negotiations.

The exact structure of the deal is not yet finalised but sources say it is likely to be a straight loan with no option or obligation of a permanent move for the 19-year-old France youth international.

Tel's decision to express a desire to leave Bayern Munich over a lack of game time -- having joined the club for around 28 million ($29m) from Rennes in 2022 -- sparked interest from a number of clubs including Manchester United and Arsenal.

Chelsea were already in contact with Bayern over Tel and a possible swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku but those talks failed to progress.

Sources have told ESPN that United were open to a loan move -- potentially with an option to make the move permanent -- but no agreement was close while Arsenal did not seriously pursue the player.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy flew to Munich on Friday to hold face-to-face talks with the player and his representatives but Tel ultimately left those conversations unconvinced of his next move.

However, with an early transfer deadline in Germany of just 5 p.m CET. compared to England's 11 p.m GMT., Tel has now decided to join Spurs after conversations with manager Ange Postecoglou and is due in London later on Monday for medical tests ahead of signing a short-term contract.

Spurs had initially agreed a 60m deal for Tel but he was unsure over making a permanent move. Talks then switched to a loan so Spurs could get their man, and Tel could review his options in the summer.

Head and Sutherland take top Australia awards

Published in Cricket
Monday, 03 February 2025 03:40

It was the first time for each player to win Australian cricket's highest individual honours. While Head was a favourite for the top men's prize, also claiming the one-day international player award, Sutherland was third in the one-day voting and a distant sixth for the women's T20I international award.

But she was awarded top votes for the two Tests played by the Australian women in the voting period over the past 12 months, most recently scoring 163 at the MCG as the hosts capped their Ashes whitewash.

The extra weighting for the Test votes proved the difference for Sutherland. It is the first time she has won any of the top women's categories - the Belinda Clark Award, the ODI or the T20I player.

"For me, I love batting, probably my Test record shows that, and I try and make the most of that when I get out in the middle," Sutherland said.

Head, who received his award from head coach Andrew McDonald at the team hotel in Galle, was a clear winner of the Allan Border Medal and is the first South Australian to claim the award. He also won the ODI category for the first time.

Head polled 208 votes for the Border Medal, well clear of Josh Hazlewood's 158, with Australian Test captain Pat Cummins third on 147.

Head is coming off a bumper 12 months across. The 31-year-old scored a staggering 1427 runs across all three formats in the 12-month polling period that began with Australia's home Test series against West Indies last January, and ended with the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Smith has the next-most runs with 806, while only Adam Zampa (31) played more games than Head (29) in the voting period.
A blistering 140 off 141 balls in his home Test match at the Adelaide Oval against India was an undeniable highlight for Head, and helped reignite Australia's series after their heavy loss in the first match in Perth.

Asked for the highlight of his past 12 months, Head said: "I feel like the Indian series, the Test series that's just gone. Nice to contribute. It's such a big five or six weeks."

Sutherland polled 168 to win ahead of Ashleigh Gardner, who won the Belinda Clark Award last year. Gardner polled 143 and Beth Mooney was third on 115, with Gardner and Mooney two-time winners.

While none of the top men's winners were at the Monday night awards function in Melbourne due mostly to the current tour of Sri Lanka, the women were celebrating in the room after they dominated the Ashes series.

Mooney and Zampa were named the top T20I players, while Gardner took out the women's ODI category and Hazlewood the men's Test honour.

Boxing Day Test sensation Sam Konstas was named the Bradman Young Men's Cricketer of the Year.
