WRU chief executive Abi Tierney says professional rugby needed to be kept in Cardiff.
"Our first concerns are with the players, staff and supporters," said Tierney.
"They can be assured professional rugby will continue at Cardiff Arms Park.
"We have been keeping in close contact with the Cardiff Rugby Board for several months once they became aware of the risks to anticipated shareholder funding not being available.
"As a result, the WRU has been able to move quickly to provide support for Cardiff."
The WRU say Cardiff is the largest of the four professional clubs in Wales, with a regional population containing more clubs and schools than any other.
"It is unthinkable for us to allow the demise of professional rugby in the Welsh capital," said Tierney.
"There has been no hesitation for the WRU as we quickly moved to pull a rescue package together."
Cardiff Rugby chair Alun Jones says "the priority has been securing our staff, the future of the club and the rugby pathway in the capital city and wider region".
"We are incredibly grateful to the Welsh Rugby Union for securing our financial stability and ensuring professional rugby continues in Cardiff as we approach our 150th season," said Jones.

PEVELY, Mo. Its one of the countrys baddest bullrings. Its high banks and high speeds. Its tight confines. Its endless action. Its I-55 Federated Auto Parts Raceway Park, and its next for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars.
The track name is slightly tweaked after a new ownership group took the reins ahead of 2025, but the racing promises to be as intense as ever. A full I-55 weekend (April 11-12) is on the agenda as The Greatest Show on Dirt invades for the Federated Auto Parts Spring Classic.
With 75 previous races at I-55, the track is the seventh most visited in series history. The third- mile has thrilled fans since it first welcomed the World of Outlaws in 1987.
MACEDOS MOMENT
A trip to I-55 serves up a prime opportunity for Carson Macedo to add another tally to the win column.
The Lemoore, Calif., native struggled in his early visits to the Missouri track, missing the top 10 in his first four attempts. But since then, hes been as consistent as they come. Macedos 17 starts after those four have seen him miss the top 10 only once by one spot, an 11th in 2023. Over that stretch hes won twice, been on the podium seven times and owns an average finish of fifth.
Macedo and the Jason Johnson Racing crew head to I-55 with some momentum courtesy of six top fives in the last eight races, including four podiums. The No. 41 team sits second in points, 78 markers behind defending champion David Gravel.
CHAMPIONS CONSISTENCY
Simply put, Donny Schatzs consistency at I-55 is off the charts.
The last 48 races at the third-mile have led to 45 top 10 finishes for the 10-time World of Outlaws champion, and 18 of those outings resulted in podiums. Oddly enough, winning has been the only challenge at I-55 for the series third winningest driver ever. Hes won just three times in 63 tries, but one did come last spring.
The Tony Stewart/Curb Agajanian Racing No. 15 is the focus of many eyes in the sprint car world as the team continues to get reacquainted with Chevy power after recently making the switch from the FPS410 engine. Schatz sits sixth in points with eight top 10 finishes through 13 races in 2025.
HAUDS HOUSE
There was a time when it felt like a foregone conclusion that Sheldon Haudenschild would find a way to win at I-55, a status hell look to regain this weekend.
It was clear from a podium in his 2017 debut at the track that I-55 suited Haudenschilds style. He followed that up the next season with another third place run on a night he led 23 laps. He got his first win on his sixth try by delivering one of the most dominant drives the series has seen with a margin of victory north of 10 seconds. That was the beginning of four victories in a nine-race stretch, and he missed the top five only twice during the run.
The team NOS Energy Drink driver hasnt won in Pevely since then, but he came close last August, starting on the pole before a third-place result. Haudenschild has put together a solid stretch recently in the Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing No. 17, posting finishes of sixth or better in the last six races.
SHARK STRIKE?
Logan Schuchart is still in search of his first victory of 2025, and the stats say hell be in the running for one this weekend.
The Hanover, Pa., native has just one I-55 checkered flag the 2018 Ironman 55 but hes consistently toward the front of the field. Schuchart has put the Shark Racing No. 1s in the top five in 15 of his last 22 races at the Show-Me State facility.
Despite a zero in the 2025 win column, its still been a great start to the year for Schuchart after bringing Kyle Pruitt aboard to turn the wrenches. Hes third in points with a 5.46 average finish and would likely be in the runner-up spot if it wasnt for an empty fuel cell at Volusia in February.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
The World of Outlaws tour is a daunting task for any rookie, so a trip home can be a refuge from the coast-to-coast grind. Thats exactly whats in line for a pair of drivers competing for the 2025 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year.
Garet Williamson calls Columbia, Mo., home, which is roughly two hours from I-55. The 24-year-old is currently tied with Chris Windom atop the rookie standings. Williamson has been consistent as of late with nine consecutive top 15 finishes aboard the Fischer Motorsports No. 23. He has only four previous appearances at I-55 but did make a Toyota Dash in 2023.
A little less than a two-hour drive south on Interstate 55, the thruway that the track sits besides, takes you to the hometown of Hunter Schuerenberg, Sikeston, Mo. He and the Vermeer Motorsports team have collected four top 10s this year and are third in rookie points behind Windom and Williamson. Hunter Percent has plenty of I-55 laps on his résumé. He started on the pole of the Ironman 55 opener in 2019 before earning a top 10 the following night.
MAKE ROOM, MISSOURI
While it might not reach the whopping total of 61 cars that filled the I-55 pit area in 2020, a large field of invaders is expected to square off with the countrys best Sprint Car drivers this weekend.
The legendary Sammy Swindell plans to make his first World of Outlaws appearance of the season. I-55 is home to Slammin Sammys second most recent series win. Swindell drove the Big Game Motorsports No. 1 to victory lane in Pevely during the 2014 season. Thats one of six World of Outlaws wins at I-55 for the Germantown, Tenn., native, good enough to be tied for the most there.
Another driver expected to make his 2025 season debut with the Series is Rico Abreu. Hes won twice with The Greatest Show on Dirt at I-55, taking the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Ironman 55. Abreu also owns a pair of midget wins at the Missouri track.
Missouris own Brian Brown will be in attendance this weekend. The five-time Knoxville Raceway track champion is a former I-55 podium finisher. Blackjack came home third in the 2012 Ironman opener.
Other competitors with I-55 on their calendars include Parker Price-Miller, Ryan Timms, Spencer Bayston, Jace Park and more.

Editors Note: In a nod to our 90 years of history, each week SPEED SPORT will look back at the top stories from 15, 30 and 60 years ago as told in the pages of National Speed Sport News.
15 Years Ago 2010
News: Calling it a circus-like atmosphere NHRAs Professional Racers Owners Organization has put its foot down when it comes to future four-wide points paying NHRA events.
In a letter to NHRA President Tom Compton, PRO says it will not participate in another four-wide competition involving championship points. The letter, also sent to Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Chairman 0. Bruton Smith, came just days after the inaugural NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, the first NHRA national event featuring all four professional categories racing four abreast, at Smiths zMAX Dragway on the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex.
During the zMAX event, the PRO board of directors surveyed both PRO member and nonmember team owners and drivers in Top Fuel. Funny Car and both Pro Stock classes asking, Do you want to participate in a four-wide national event for points again?
The result a 60-3 vote was an overwhelming no.
Though PROs letter praises Smiths efforts to increase awareness and visibility of NHRA drag racing, it explains competitors are not in agreement that a four-wide national event is in the best interest of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Specific concerns listed in the letter are:
- Decreased safety and an increased probability of accidents;
- Confusion among drivers. teams and fans. Particularly regarding starting-line procedures;
- Virtual non-existent sponsorship identification from the wide camera angle for television coverage; and
- A circus-like atmosphere where the race turned into a novelty-like event similar to that of the WWE, rather than a race for points toward the NHRA world championship.
While the letter emphasizes a wish to discontinue competing in a four-wide format for points, PRO is not opposed to discussing the possibility or a four-wide exhibition or all-star race in the future.
Winners: Ryan Newman slipped inside Jeff Gordon on the final restart to win Saturday nights Subway Fresh Fit 600, returning to a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory lane for the first time since the 2008 Daytona 500.
The green-white-checkered triumph at Phoenix Raceway, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver of the Tornados Chevy Impala said, was the most emotional victory Ive ever had in my career.
This 14th career victory in 303 starts was 77 races in the making and was Newmans first at the site of his NASCAR Cup Series debut Nov. 5, 2000. at age 22. He had earned four pole positions here. But his best finishes were second and third on the mile oval.
When that victory came. it ended Hendrick Motorsports streak of six victories at PIR. Newman said, I dont have enough words. lt was a long time coming for me personally: This is really awesome for our team.
He said in victory lane that team owner Tony Stewart was so proud of me. He told me he loved me and I told him I loved him back because its his name Im representing and (those of) a lot of people behind us. Im missing my mom and dad right now. Theyre hack home. taking care of my grandfather:
Newman said he didnt know what to expect on the restart.
Its hard to gauge when youre midpack. We were just at the right place at the right time.
Newman said he didnt feel like he had a great jump. I did the best I could, he said. When I saw that white flag, I thought, I aint got that far to go.
I held my line and got a good shot off of turn two. It was all we needed, Newman said.
reflecting on his suggestion and crew chief Tony Gibsons concurrence to take on only two fresh tires while most of the contenders took four on the final pit stop with two laps remaining. Track position was real important. I think the two tires were a good call because the track cooled off and it was little more grip with two (fresh) tires. Two tires earlier in the day werent good enough.

News: Promoter Bruton Smith couldnt just put a shovel into dirt for a groundbreaking. With explosives sending dirt 100 feet in the air and celebrities galore present Smith, P. T. Barnum reincarnate, and friends broke ground for Texas Motor Speedway last week.
NASCAR Winston Cup drivers Jeff Gordon along with native Texans Terry and Bobby Labonte joined more than 2,000 racing enthusiasts for the official construction start for the worlds second largest sports facility. Smith also got a break from the weatherman who halted 2 days of rain for the ceremony.
Race fans, this is for you, Smith told the attendees of his north Ft. Worth site. Were going to start with 150,000 seats then we will go to a quarter of a million so that you can bring your friends.
The NASCAR drivers took part in the first groundbreaking as they helped set off explosives shooting Texas turf in the air. Smith then followed with a grander and larger blast that produced a fireball and showered dirt all over the site.
No we havent seen anything yet, Gordon told his admiring fans. We are all talking about Texas Motor Speedway.
Brutons already going to start on the parking, Gordon continued referring to the jammed temporary parking lot utilized for the ceremony. This is a great day for Texas, Terry Labonte commented. The people of Texas are used to doing things in big style but even Texans might be able to learn a few things from Bruton. The last time I raced Winston Cup in Texas, I dont think even this many people were in the stands. That will be different here.
Im a native Texan and my sponsor Interstate Batteries is a Texas company, Bobby Labonte said. This is a great opportunity that gives both of us something to be proud of in our home state. I think the people of Texas will be thrilled with our sport.
Winners: Ken Schrader drove through the field to overcome a penalty and take the $29,500 winners check in the NASCAR SuperTruck Series by Craftsman event at Saugus Speedway Saturday night.
A record crowd estimated at 10,000 jammed the flat one-third-mile oval for the 200-lap event. Schrader, driving his AC-Delco Chevrolet started third, and ran with the leaders until lap 12, when he was sent to the rear of the field for knocking P.J. Jones into the wall. P.J. knocked me out of the way, so I knocked him back harder, was Schraders explanation after the race.
At the green flag, polesitter Mike Skinner shot into the lead, and stayed there until the lap 101 half-time break.
Although there were several yellow fiag periods, the race proceded at a steady pace until lap 82, when the red flag was waved. The track crew bad to do some lengthy and serious clean-up after the engine on Jones truck let go, spreading oil around the entire track.
Jones truck also caught fire briefly, but was quickly extinguished. When the green came out again, Skinner was able to go right to the front again, and stayed there until the half time break. He was trailed by Geoff Bodine and Butch Miller.
At around lap 114, Skinner was helped into the turn-two wall when he made contact with Jerry Glanville while trying to lap the former NFL coach. Miller inherited the lead.
The ASA late model champion paced the next 30 laps until he had a similar encounter with Joe Ruttman and spun his Ford truck. Schrader then inherited the lead. Both Glanville and Ruttman were penalized by NASCAR for their efforts.
The 11th and final yellow waved on lap 158 when Walker Evans smacked the wall. The race ran green the rest of the way with Schrader followed home by Bodine, Bill Sedgwick, Miller and Skinner.

News: The widest variety of engines, chassis and drive in the 4.9-year history of the Indianapolis race is reflected in the entry list of 68 cars for this years running of the 500-mile classic on May 31.
The entry, up seven cars from last years 61, shows 46 of the cars being of the rear-engined variety. The remaining 22 front-engined cars include a pair of four-wheel drive machines and a new front-drive creation.
The list indicates there will be 21 Ford engined cars, however, Ford Motor Co. reports that 24 ears will use their new four overhead cam V-8 engine. Four-cylinder Offenhauser engines will be in 33 cars, of which 17 are rear-englned. One Offypowered car, entered by Gordon Lao Liew, will be supercharged.
Supercharged eight-cylinder Novi engines will be in three cars, two of which will be four-wheel drive. There are four Chevrolet-engined cars entered, two rear-engined Lotuses by Frank Harrison, a rear-engined model by Joe Scopa and a front-drive, front-engined car by Mickey Thompson.
A rcar-engined Maserati has been entered for Al Unser to drive by Frank Arciero and Bob Wilke has added a front-engined Ford roadster to his team.
One of Dan Gurneys four All-American Racers entries and the second McManus car are believed paper entries as Ford does not show them on their customer list. It is also believed that the third factory Lotus will be used for practice only.
Three former winners-Rodger Ward, A. J. Foyt and Parnelll Jones along with Scotlands Jim Clark head the entry list. All have their pick of at least two cars with Foyt having his choice of three, a Lotus-Ford, a Lola-Ford and his Offy-engined roadster.
Of the 68 cars entered, only 46 had drivers assigned, with Foyts and Bobby Unsers name appearing twice on the official list.
Winners: Jud Larson, driving the A. J. Watson Offy sprinter, cleaned house at the Eldora. Speedway Sunday afternoon in the USAC sprint car feature before a capacity crowd.
Larson, who won the first sprint car race or the year at Reading, Pa., several weeks ago, had little trouble leading the 30-lap feature all the way after starting on the pole by virtue of setting the fastest qualifying time of 18.81 on the short half-mile dirt track.
Defending sprint car champion Don Branson finished second in another Offy-powered car, with Bobby Unser finishing third in the K. E. Y. Chevy, wrenched by Don Shepherd. Jerry Daniels and Bob Harkey rounded out the first five finishers.
Mechanical troubles forced five cars from the feature event. They included: AI Smith, Dave Norris, Rollie Beal, Gary Congdon, and Jerry Richert.
Heat winners were Larson, Unser and Harkey. Gary Congdon, a product of the midget ranks, was very impressive in his 10-lap semi final victory. Starting in third spot in the Smith Chevy, he beat out Dave Norris and Jim McCune and knocked more than three seconds off the track record set by Gordon Johncock in 1964.

WHEATLAND, Mo. Justin Wells jokes that its a shame a milestone birthday is in the not-too-distant future. The half-century mark can be daunting. No matter the chosen occupation, it is supposed to mean a slower pace.
But Wells, 48, instead is ready to pick up the pace. He plans a semi-regular schedule of Open Late Model racing after dominating en route to back-to-back Hermitage Lumber Late Model track championships at Lucas Oil Speedway.
The Ozarks Area Racers Foundation Hall of Famer from Aurora, a one-time force on the regional racing scene, flashed that he still had the ability last October with runs of third and fourth in the Lucas Oil MLRA Fall Nationals at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Thats what were building on, Wells said this week. Its been a long time since we concentrated on super late model racing. Ive got the best cars and best motors and best of everything that Ive ever owned.
Its a shame that Im getting close to 50, he added with a chuckle. I want to give it a whirl before Im not saying that Im ready to quit, but I dont have a ton of racing left in me. Me and my wife (Missy) talked and with my crew guys and we said, Lets give it all weve got and if it dont work out, thats all right. If it does, thats gonna be cool.
Wells is looking forward to mixing it up with an expected top-notch field at the 12th annual Lucas Oil Speedway Spring Nationals Presented by Iconic Apparel, this Friday and Saturday. With the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series off this week, defending Show-Me 100 winner Jonathan Davenport and other national-touring drivers are expected, with top prizes of $7,000 on Friday and $20,000 on Saturday.
Everybody wants to tune up for the Show-Me 100 and I think youre going to draw a lot of good guys, like Davenport and some of them. It should be a good show for the fans, Wells said.
After winning 23 weekly features at Lucas Oil Speedway the last two years, Wells said he doesnt have a lot of home-track advantage because the power of the Open Late Models make it a different ballgame compared to the limited motor.
Wells is looking forward to putting his focus on the open division this season. He said he has two open motors available for his two cars a 2006 TNT chassis that he calls Old Faithful that has 116 feature wins and a TNT he debuted last year by making the Show-Me 100 starting field, plus the strong Fall Nationals runs.
Mainly thats all were gonna do this year, he said of open racing. Were just hit anything within about a three-hour radius and try that this year.
The Old Faithful car, were gonna take our open motor that we ran last year and put that in it and were gonna run the new ULRA Series and Revival Series and and use that car for the smaller tracks.
These motors any more, they so high-dollar that you have to have a reason to run em. You cant just take it to a $1,000 or $1,500 to win show. Theres got to be some money on the line where you think you have a chance to win something.
Wells broke out the newer car last earlier this spring at Springfield Raceway, but struggled with finishes outside the top 10. He figured to be better prepared for this weekend.
Were jacked up about it, Wells said. We didnt start off very good at Springfield, but it was mainly because we werent really ready to go. Now weve had these three weeks off and I feel good about where were at.

Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog is taking his first strides toward a potential NHL comeback.
The Avalanche announced Wednesday that Landeskog has been assigned to a conditioning stint with the American Hockey League's Colorado Eagles. That puts Landeskog in line to play his first professional hockey game since Colorado hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2022.
Landeskog has been sidelined by a knee injury for the past two seasons. He sat out all of the 2022-23 campaign with the ailment and underwent knee cartilage replacement surgery in May 2023. The procedure is often characterized as career-ending, but Landeskog has managed to participate sporadically in Avalanche practices this year. He has ramped up those appearances in recent months, which allowed coach Jared Bednar to hint earlier this week that while Landeskog is likely to remain on long-term injured reserve through the end of this regular season, a conditioning loan wasn't out of the question.
How Landeskog does with the Eagles could determine whether he steps back into the Avalanche's lineup for their upcoming playoff run. The AHL club has five regular-season games remaining, and Landeskog would be eligible to play in up to three of them as part of his assignment. Landeskog was slated to practice with the Eagles on Wednesday before they decided on his ability to get in a game.
The Avalanche would welcome Landeskog back to boost their scoring depth on another postseason push. Colorado is top-five in league scoring already -- averaging 3.34 goals -- and Landeskog could help boost the offensive further even after a long layoff. Before his injury, Landeskog was a perennial 20-goal scorer. And beyond just what he'd provide on the ice, Landeskog's NHL return would be an emotional high for Colorado in a season where franchise stalwart Mikko Rantanen was traded to Carolina in January.
Colorado is currently slated to play Dallas in a potential first-round playoff series. The NHL postseason begins April 19.

Ray Shero, a longtime NHL executive and son of a Hockey Hall of Fame coach, has died, the NHL announced in a statement Wednesday. He was 62.
Shero started out as a sports agent before launching an NHL front office career that spanned three decades. He served as GM for the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins, turning the latter from a franchise that hadn't made the playoffs in five seasons into a Stanley Cup winner in 2009 with the first championship of the Sidney Crosby era. Shero held his post with the Penguins from 2006 to 2014, guiding Pittsburgh to the postseason in every year of his tenure.
After leaving the Penguins, Shero landed in New Jersey and went to work rebuilding the Devils' core. From 2015 to 2020, he added the likes of Taylor Hall (who was the NHL's MVP in 2018), Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier.
"On behalf of the ownership, management, staff, and players of the New Jersey Devils, we are all stunned and deeply saddened by the passing of former General Manager Ray Shero," Tom Fitzgerald, Devils president and GM said in a statement. "Ray was a highly-respected executive, enthusiastic mentor, and most importantly, tremendous friend to many during his time in New Jersey. Ray came from a family that dedicated themselves to the game, and he continued to pass that commitment on. The organization is extremely grateful for the impact Ray had during his tenure in New Jersey, and it is without question that his fingerprints are on the current group we see today both on and off the ice. We send our sincere condolences to his family, and countless friends throughout the hockey world."
The year after being fired in New Jersey, Shero joined the Minnesota Wild as a senior adviser and held that position until his death.
Hockey was always in Shero's blood, although he never played the game professionally. His father was famed coach Fred Shero, who won back-to-back Cups with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975 and was the NHL's Jack Adams winner as coach of the year in 1974.
Fred Shero was a pioneer behind the bench, becoming the first head coach to hire assistants and adopting morning skates. He was inducted posthumously to the Hall of Fame's builder category in 2013.
Like his father before him, Ray was able to leave his own lasting impression on the NHL.
"Ray Shero's smile and personality lit up every room he walked into and brightened the day of everyone he met," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. "Widely respected throughout hockey for his team-building acumen and eye for talent, he was even more beloved for how he treated everyone fortunate enough to have known him ... it was clear he loved what he was doing and I always marveled at his infectious enthusiasm. The entire National Hockey League family mourns his passing and sends our deepest condolences to the Shero family and Ray's many friends throughout the hockey world."
Stanley Cup playoff watch: Matchups to monitor Wednesday

Following a busy 10-game Tuesday night in the NHL, it's a relatively quiet five-game evening Wednesday.
Nevertheless, there are playoff and draft lottery ramifications aplenty, so let's hit all five matchups rapid-fire:
Toronto Maple Leafs at Tampa Bay Lightning
7 p.m. (ESPN+)
While the Leafs appear destined for a top-two spot in the Atlantic, the Lightning can still catch them for the No. 1 seed. If the Lightning are going to do it, a game like this is a prime opportunity to make up ground with a regulation win.
Philadelphia Flyers at New York Rangers
7:30 p.m. (TNT)
The Rangers lost their two most recent games by a combined score of 9-1, and their playoff hopes are dwindling quickly. A win over the Flyers would be a good step toward potentially climbing back into the playoffs. Philly is fourth in the draft lottery order heading into this matchup -- and bear in mind the Flyers also own the first-round picks of the Colorado Avalanche and Edmonton Oilers.
San Jose Sharks at Minnesota Wild
8 p.m. (ESPN+)
Speaking of occupying a great place in the draft lottery order, the Sharks are No. 1, and they are four points clear of the Chicago Blackhawks for that spot. The Wild are holding on to the second Western wild-card spot, and they enter the evening four points up on the Flames.
St. Louis Blues at Edmonton Oilers
10 p.m. (TNT)
The Blues' 12-game winning streak came to a halt Monday at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets, and they'll be looking to start another one here against the Oilers. St. Louis is in the first wild-card position, two points ahead of the Wild. The Oilers appear to be a lock for the No. 3 spot in the Pacific, bringing on a first-round matchup with the Los Angeles Kings for the fourth straight postseason.
Calgary Flames at Anaheim Ducks
10 p.m. (ESPN+)
Calgary's chances to jump into wild-card position have faded recently, so getting two points out of this game is crucial. As noted above, they are four points back of the Wild for that final spot. The Ducks enter the contest in the No. 8 spot in the lottery order, right in a jumble of teams between 73 and 76 points, so they can move up pretty easily based on their performance in the final five games.
With the regular season ending April 17, we'll help you track it all with the NHL playoff watch. As we traverse the final stretch, we'll provide details on all the playoff races, along with the teams jockeying for position in the 2025 NHL draft lottery.

Race for the No. 1 pick
The NHL uses a draft lottery to determine the order of the first round, so the team that finishes in last place is not guaranteed the No. 1 selection. As of 2021, a team can move up a maximum of 10 spots if it wins the lottery, so only 11 teams are eligible for the No. 1 pick. Full details on the process are here. Matthew Schaefer, a defenseman for the OHL's Erie Otters, is No. 1 on the draft board.

NHL Urgency Index: Which teams need to win the Stanley Cup right now?

The 2024-25 NHL regular season has certainly been a journey, between the emergence of unexpected Stanley Cup and MVP contenders, an incredible 4 Nations Face-Off, blockbuster trades, big winning streaks and, most recently, Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's record for career NHL goals.
But we all know the real hockey season starts April 19 when the puck drops on the Stanley Cup playoffs. With it will come the intensity and rugged play that we've come to expect over the years as teams make their quest for the Cup.
Oh, and there will also be pressure. Lots and lots of pressure.
To quantify exactly how much weight each team is under to win the Cup right now, I developed the Urgency Index. In it, every playoff team is graded on a 0-10 scale (relative to other playoff squads) in different categories representing reasons why they need to win ASAP:
-- Contender status (based on their Elo rating-based odds to win the Cup)
-- Market pressure (based on a combination of fanbase and market size)
-- Current Cup drought for the franchise
-- Recent playoff frustrations (based on total postseason wins over the past five years without a Cup)
-- Average roster age (where older = more pressure)
-- Contract urgency (average remaining years for the team's top three active players by goals above replacement before they hit free agency).
Since some situations imply more urgency to win than others, double weight has been added on the contender status, team age and market pressure categories and half-weight on the average free agent years remaining (since teams can often find a way to extend stars if they need to). Then, the totals have been added up to arrive at this semi-scientific ranking of the top playoff teams that have to win a championship this season -- or else.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has said his relationship with former teammate Lionel Messi experienced ups and downs, but that he always appreciated having the Inter Miami forward on his team.
Ter Stegen joined Barça in 2014 and played alongside Messi for seven years until the Argentina international departed for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021.
The pair won numerous trophies together on the pitch, including the Champions League in 2015 and four LaLiga titles, but they did not always see eye to eye.
"The good or the bad moments?" Ter Stegen told Bild when asked to recount his best memories playing with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.
"We had them both [laughs]. Leo is a special character, who is at this [high] level because he's motivated by a lot of things that we don't see.
"There were moments when things didn't work between us because he was annoyed with me and I was annoyed with him.
"I think Leo's probably the only player that, if he wants to shoot right at your face, he can shoot right at your face.
"Other players would probably shoot somewhere else, but he's got the ability to hit [the target] accurately."
Asked if he had ever experienced Messi's ire, Ter Stegen added: "Several times [smiles], but not in a bad way in the sense that it dragged on or anything.
"We never had an argument in the sense that you say we don't get on at all. But we had moments, and that's fine.
"Leo is simply a super impressive character on the pitch and he plays with an ease that you won't see again, I'm 100% sure of that.
"He has the ability that if he wants to make you look bad [on the pitch], then he does it with such ease and with a pass or a shot that you say afterwards: 'That was impossible!'
"I've experienced that more than once. And that's why I'm glad I've always had him with me in games and not on the other side."
Messi, Barça's leading appearance maker (778) and goal scorer (672) of all time, became the club captain in the years leading to his departure, a role now held by Ter Stegen.
"We were in the dressing room together for a long time and it was definitely interesting to have him in the team and to see how he leads," Ter Stegen continued.
"Whether it's my style or not, it was interesting to see. Leo is not a loudspeaker, he works a lot with presence and he doesn't need to say much, actually.
"When he does say something, everyone listens. And that's what you actually want to achieve as a captain, that people listen to you and follow you."
Klopp to return to Liverpool for 1st time since exit

Jürgen Klopp is set to return to Liverpool next month for the first time since he ended his infamous nine-year reign last summer.
Klopp enjoyed a glittering stint at Anfield, winning seven major honours, before stepping down at the end of last season.
He will return to Merseyside in May to feature as a guest speaker at the LFC Foundation's Gala Ball at the city's Anglican Cathedral.
Klopp was appointed the LFC Foundation's first ever honorary ambassador last summer and will be the marquee name at the black-tie event on May 23.
The gala coincides with the final weekend of the Premier League season, meaning Klopp could be in attendance when Liverpool are potentially crowned Premier League champions at home to Crystal Palace on May 25.
Liverpool have excelled under new head coach Arne Slot and are 11 points clear at the top of the table.
They need a maximum of 11 points from their final seven games to guarantee what would be just the club's second league title since 1990.
Looking ahead to his Liverpool return, Klopp -- who now has a new role as Red Bull's global head of soccer -- said: "Everyone knows how much I love the work of the LFC Foundation and I can't wait to join them to celebrate that work and help to raise important funds for them to continue the incredible things they are doing."
Funds raised through next month's event will support the work of the LFC Foundation, who helped over 127,000 people last season and aims to tackle social inequalities.
Some of the funds raised will also go towards Forever Reds, the club's official former players association.
Matt Parish, chief executive of LFC Foundation, said: "We are looking forward to this year's Gala Ball and we are delighted that Jürgen will be joining us to support the event.
"Jürgen was a fantastic advocate for our work during his time at the club and we appreciate his ongoing support and hope as many people as possible can join us on what is sure to be a memorable night and an opportunity to raise funds to allow us to continue to grow and support even more people in our communities as well as supporting Forever Reds."
