DALY CITY, Calif. – Bronte Law is a match-play dynamo with her heart set on making the European Solheim Cup team headed to Scotland in September.

The 24-year-old Englishwoman took a large step toward doing that with her nearly historic finish Sunday at the Mediheal Championship.

Ten shots down at day’s start, Law went on a tear in the middle of her round, making five birdies and an eagle in a nine-hole stretch to shoot 7-under-par 65. She was tied for the lead when she signed her scorecard two hours ahead of the final group. She actually went up by a shot waiting in the clubhouse, before finally being caught by Sei Young Kim and Jeoneun Lee6, and before losing to Kim in a three-way playoff.

Law didn’t match the LPGA record for a final-round comeback and didn’t get her first title, but there was satisfying consolation.

Law started this week seventh on the European Solheim Cup world rankings list, but she is expected to move into the top five with Sunday’s tie for second. That’s big, because the top five will make the team when qualifying ends at the conclusion of the Ladies Scottish Open (Aug. 11). She could also make the team by finishing among the top three on the LET Solheim Cup points list. She isn’t currently among the top 15 on that list.

“It’s huge,” Law said. “I went to LET Q-School for a reason. I really want to make that team.”

Law earned LET membership in December winning Q-School medalist honors. She needed LET membership to be eligible to make the European team. She showed her explosiveness there making an LET record nine birdies in a row in the third round.

As an amateur, Law distinguished herself in match play. Three years ago, she became the first player from Great Britain and Ireland to go 5-0 in the Curtis Cup. She also helped England make a hard run at nearly upsetting the South Koreans at the UL International Crown last fall.

DALY CITY, Calif. – Sei Young Kim hoisted the Mediheal Championship trophy late Sunday with her caddie marveling in the background.

Paul Fusco has watched his player win every which way now.

He watched her put on a spectacular fireworks show winning the Thornberry Classic last year, smashing the LPGA’s 72-hole scoring record. Her 31-under total was four shots better than the previous tour record, which she shared with Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam. Fusco was on the bag when Kim went on that birdie blitz in Phoenix to win the Founders Cup in 2016 to tie Sorenstam’s mark.

Fusco was also there her rookie year, when Kim beat her idol, Inbee Park, in jaw-dropping fashion at the Lotte Championship in 2015. That’s the year Kim rinsed her approach at the 72nd hole, looking as if she was going to blow a chance to win her second LPGA title. But after taking a penalty drop, she holed an 8-iron from 154 yards for par to force the playoff with Park.

“She’s one of those special players,” Fusco said. “When she’s firing on cylinders, she can do crazy things. Today, she showed she can do it even when she doesn’t look like she’s on her game. She showed she can still win.”

With Sunday’s victory, Kim showed she can win when par’s a good score.

Lake Merced was dressed up like a major, with pinched fairways, thick and gnarly rough and firm, undulating greens.

She has now won at 31-under and at 7-under.

“I think this was the hardest win of my life,” Kim said, who is now 4-0 in LPGA playoffs. “In my other wins, I played well in the final rounds. Today, I wasn’t good in the final round.”

Kim won despite shooting a 3-over-par 75.

She beat Jeongeun Lee6 and Bronte Law with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

This was Kim’s eighth LPGA title, her first “come-from-ahead” victory. That’s what it felt like after she gave away a three-shot lead over the first two holes. She squandered it with a double bogey at the first and a bogey at the second. She shot 40 on the front nine.

It didn’t take long before Kim was chasing, with Law putting on a show in front of her. Law shot 65 in a torrid run of five birdies and an eagle in a nine-hole stretch in the middle of the round.

“The feeling was 'Just hang in there, you did it in the first round and you came back and you can do it again,’” Fusco said.

Kim started the tournament just as poorly. She didn’t look like she was going to make the cut on Thursday. She was 4 over after her first four holes in the first round.

“Something we talk a lot about is not reacting, not getting too emotional when things aren’t going well,” Fusco said. “It just makes the game easier.

“The media always wants to know what a player’s thinking. We don’t really want to do too much thinking. It’s 'Here is the number, hit it.’ I know that’s not what the media wants to hear. It’s not the entertaining thing to say, but it’s really just that simple.”

Kim won on a golf course she didn’t really like.

“It didn’t suit my eye, because of a lot of trees,” Kim said. “I kept talking to myself, telling myself, 'I like this golf course.’ ... I do like it now.”

Kim has now won in each of her first five seasons on tour.

“I learned a lot today,” Kim said.

She learned there may not be a setup she can’t conquer.

DALY CITY, Calif. – Bronte Law couldn’t convert her spectacular charge into a historic comeback victory Sunday at the Mediheal Championship, but she said she learned lessons to help her break through and win her first LPGA title.

Ten shots back at day’s start, Law would have matched the LPGA record for a final-round comeback, a mark shared by three players, but Sei Young Kim defeated her and Jeongeun Lee6 with a birdie at the first playoff hole.

“My golf is in a good place right now,” Law said. “If someone had told me I was going to be in a playoff at the start of the day, I would have told them that they were crazy. So, the reality is I did something that I wouldn't have even believed at the start of the day. So, there’s a lot to take from that.”

The 24-year-old Englishwoman and UCLA graduate is in her third year on tour.

“I will build on this experience,” she said. “It's always fun being in contention. So, I just hope that there's a lot more of this to come.”

After six straight pars to open her round, Law caught fire. She made five birdies and an eagle in the middle of the round to shoot 7-under-par 65 on a very difficult Lake Merced Golf Club setup. She finished two hours ahead of Kim, waiting in the clubhouse while watching the tournament on TV before giving herself about an hour or so to warm up again.

“It was tough,” Law said of the wait. “It was really like nothing I have ever experienced before. I just tried to stay calm and conserve energy, because it's been a long week already.”

Law said she loved Lake Merced’s difficult setup.

“The harder, the better” she said. “I love a challenge.”

Sources: Timbers sign Necaxa striker Fernandez

Published in Soccer

The Portland Timbers have completed the transfer of forward Brian Fernandez from Necaxa, multiple sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

While multiple outlets reported in recent weeks have reported that the terms of the deal had been finalized, the Athletic was first to report that the transfer is complete, with Fernandez securing his work visa in the last few days.

The sources didn't divulge the precise fee, but they did reveal that it dwarfs the previous club record of close to $5 million the Timbers paid for Lucas Melano back in 2017, though it's not as high as the $12 million previously reported.

- Carlisle: The Timbers have the tools to get back on track

Fernandez, 24, can play either as a central striker or on the wing, and is expected to arrive in Portland as early as Monday. The signing also concludes the Timbers' lengthy and at times public search for a new attacking piece, which saw them linked with the likes of the Tigres duo of Julian Quinones and Eduardo Vargas, as well as AEK Athens' on-loan attacker Ezequiel Ponce.

It is also believed that Fernandez will not have to serve out the remaining two games of a three-game suspension he recently was handed following a red card and then a subsequent altercation with a fan as he left the field, though MLS will ultimately have the final say.

While it was an ignominious end to his Necaxa career, Fernandez's stint with Los Rayos resurrected his career. While on the books of Racing Club, Fernandez was suspended for a year by CONMEBOL following a failed drug test in which he tested positive for cocaine.

A series of loan stints followed with the likes of Sarmiento, Metz and Union La Calera, but his time with Necaxa proved highly productive, with the Argentine scoring 12 goals in 15 games during the current Clausura. Overall, Fernandez scored 18 goals in 32 league and cup appearances.

Fernandez joins the Timbers with three games remaining in Portland's season opening 12-game road swing due to renovations at its home venue, Providence Park. The Timbers have so far gone 3-5-1 and sit in ninth place in the 12-team Western Conference.

Martinez nets two as Atlanta downs Sporting KC

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 05 May 2019 21:37

Josef Martinez scored two goals, and Ezequiel Barco had one goal and one assist as Atlanta United notched a 3-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night at Kansas City, Kan.

Martinez scored in the 39th and 76th minutes as he doubled his season output to four goals. The forward set an MLS single-season mark with 31 last year.

Barco tallied in the 47th minute, and Brad Guzan made three saves while recording his second straight shutout and third of the season. Atlanta United (3-3-2, 11 points) have won three of their past four games following a four-game winless streak to open the season.

The defending MLS champions entered the contest with an MLS-low six goals. The Five Stripes led the league with 70 last year.

Sporting KC (2-3-4, 10 points) are winless in their last five contests (0-2-3).

Atlanta United outshot Sporting KC 19-10. The Five Stripes had an 8-3 edge in shots on target.

The game was scoreless until the 39th minute when Martinez tallied on a rebound.

Barco delivered a right-footed blast from outside the box that Sporting KC's Tim Melia blocked. Martinez was in free for the rebound and sent a left-footed shot past Melia just before the goalkeeper crashed into him.

Sporting KC had two great scoring changes late in the first half.

A right-footed blast by midfielder Kelyn Rowe in the 44th minute appeared en route to the net, but it struck the face of Atlanta defender Miles Robinson. Two minutes later, forward Krisztian Nemeth sent a right-footed shot just over the top of the net.

Atlanta United wasted little time padding their lead in the second half. In the second minute, the ball came Barco's way at the top of the box, and the midfielder sent a left-footer through traffic and past Melia into the lower left corner of the net.

Guzan wasn't called on to make a save until the 66th minute, when he easily grabbed a header by Sporting KC defender Botond Barath.

Martinez put the game away 10 minutes later when he received a pass from Barco just inside the box. He struck a right-footed boot over Melia's reach to make it 3-0.

Melia made five saves for Sporting KC, who have allowed 11 goals in their past three matches, as defender Matt Besler has battled a hamstring injury.

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov would like to defend his title three times over the next 11 months, according to his agent, Ali Abdelaziz.

As a devout Muslim, Nurmagomedov (27-0) is preparing to observe the one-month fasting period of Ramadan, which begins Monday. Abdelaziz said Nurmagomedov will continue to train, however, and has said he would like to fight in September, December and next April.

"He gave me very specific instructions," Abdelaziz told ESPN. "He said he wants to fight Sept. 7 and again in December. And if [former welterweight champion] Georges St-Pierre can figure things out with the UFC by April, that's the deal. He would like that fight in April."

St-Pierre, 37, announced his retirement from mixed martial arts in December. During that announcement, he said he would love to fight Nurmagomedov but claimed the UFC wished to go in another direction. Nurmagomedov considers St-Pierre a legend and has always wanted to face him.

Regardless of any development with St-Pierre, however, it is clear that Nurmagomedov wants to be active. He is currently serving a nine-month suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his role in a post-fight melee at UFC 229 in October. He is expected to return against interim champion Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 on Sept. 7 in Abu Dhabi.

"The lightweight division has a lot of contenders, and we need to keep the division going," Abdelaziz said. "Khabib has done this before. He fought [Edson Barboza], Al [Iaquinta] and Conor [McGregor] in less than one year [from December 2017 to October 2018]. If it can be Georges in April, he would love that fight. If not, it can be any contender."

When asked if Nurmagomedov, of Dagestan, has any interest in a rematch with McGregor, after the two continued to go back and forth on social media as recently as last month, Abdelaziz said it depends on whether McGregor reasserts himself as a No. 1 contender.

"To be honest, Conor is going to have to go out there and fight somebody like Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson or Cowboy [Donald Cerrone]," Abdelaziz said. "He's not a worthy enough opponent right now. That's the feeling from all of us, as a team."

Of course, Nurmagomedov's plan involves defeating Poirier at UFC 242 first -- and that has his full attention, according to Abdelaziz.

It will mark a special event for Nurmagomedov, as it will take place in the United Arab Emirates, and his father is expected to corner him. Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov has not been able to corner Nurmagomedov in fights in the U.S. due to visa issues.

"Mixed martial arts in the Middle East and North Africa became so big after Khabib won his fight against Conor because Khabib was honoring these people," Abdelaziz said. "To go to Abu Dhabi and put on a show for these people, to show these young, Muslim kids there is something called the UFC, and you can become a UFC champion -- doesn't matter what race or religion you come from -- it's very special for Khabib. He is an ambassador for that region."

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres played a terrific series over the weekend in San Diego, before crowds of 44,000-plus each game, with the Dodgers winning on Friday and Saturday with runs in the top of the ninth, and then Hunter Renfroe providing one of 2019's signature moments with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday:

I love everything about this highlight. The game on the line, the blast, the bat raised in triumph, the call from Don Orsillo, Padres fans going crazy, Renfroe rounding the bases in joy, the celebration at home plate, with Eric Hosmer taking the time to carefully toss his helmet aside and Austin Hedges jumping all over Renfroe:

The win was even more dramatic considering the circumstances leading up to Kenley Jansen's final pitch. Kirby Yates, so dominant all season as the closer, had allowed both of those ninth-inning runs to pick up the losses on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, Chris Taylor's two-run homer off Robbie Erlin in the eighth gave the Dodgers a 5-4 lead.

Then the Padres loaded the bases with no outs off Jansen -- including two bunt singles by Manuel Margot and Wil Myers -- only to look like they would squander that opportunity when Greg Garcia inexplicably struck out looking on a 3-2 cutter down the middle to end a nine-pitch at-bat and Francisco Mejia popped up to first base.

Renfroe, by the way, has five career grand slams, tied for second most in the majors since his debut in 2016, behind Manny Machado's seven. It was the first pinch-hit walk-off grand slam in Padres history and their first walk-off win of the season. What could have been a demoralizing series instead ends on a positive note.

Can the Padres hang with the big boys all season? The victory leaves them 2.5 games behind the Dodgers and 1.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. On paper, the Dodgers certainly remain the heavy favorites to win the division. They have the talent and the track record, so FanGraphs projects them as the much better team moving forward and gives them an 89 percent chance to win the division compared to the Padres' odds of 3.9 percent.

Still, there have been a good number of positives so far for San Diego. Some thoughts on the up-and-coming exciting young Padres:

1. The young rotation has been excellent, with a 3.52 ERA, fourth best in the majors. Rookie Chris Paddack has been the breakout star, but Matt Strahm (3.03 ERA) and Nick Margevicius (3.47) have been solid, while Eric Lauer (4.30 ERA) and Joey Lucchesi (5.00 ERA) have been a little less consistent. Cal Quantrill and Pedro Avila also have made spot starts, meaning four rookies have started a game while Lauer and Lucchesi are in their second seasons.

Can they keep it going? The group has done a good job of limiting walks and home runs and has allowed the third-lowest exit velocity among rotations, behind only the Dodgers and Rays. These guys are good and pitching with a lot of confidence.

Margevicius is the big surprise, jumping from Class A to the majors, but his deception and pitching smarts help make up for a lack of premium velocity. You also wonder how a rotation of four lefties will play out over an entire season and the depth will be tested at some point if there are innings limits on Paddack of Margevicius. There is also the possibility of signing Dallas Keuchel, probably after the draft in June if he's still in play.

2. Kirby Yates is fine. Yes, the back-to-back losses weren't pretty, but he's fine. I know there is always doubt when a guy comes out of nowhere like Yates basically did last season, but he has been dominant for more than a season. He's fine. If Hosmer comes up with Max Muncy's grounder on Friday night instead of having it glance off his glove, Yates pitches a scoreless inning and nobody worries about what happened Saturday.

3. Manny Machado has been fine ... but needs to do better. He's hitting .236/.317/.449 with eight home runs and 19 RBIs after hitting one home run on Friday and two on Saturday. His defense at third has been excellent (plus-5 defensive runs saved) and he's filled in nicely at shortstop with Fernando Tatis Jr. on the injured list. I do wonder if he has been trying to do too much -- his strikeout rate is way up from 2018 (14.7 percent to 22.5) because his swing-and-miss rate is up over 8 percentage points.

Here's why I think you'll start seeing Machado's numbers go up. He's hitting .167 with zero strikes and .200 (4-for-20) when putting the first pitch in play. Last year, he hit .432 with zero strikes and .467 when putting the first pitch in play (49-for-105). This stretch of four home runs in five games should cut down on his overanxiousness and get him going.

4. They need to figure out second base. Padres second basemen are hitting .169/.259/.338. Ian Kinsler is back in good graces and did have a good week with seven hits and two home runs. Luis Urias, demoted after a 24-at-bat trial run, has been tearing it up in Triple-A (.338/.408/.794), so he could be back for another shot. For now, it's Kinsler, but Urias deserves another opportunity.

5. The fans matter! All three games against the Dodgers were basically sellouts. Yes, there were a lot of Dodgers fans in attendance, but the series drew more than 133,000 fans. A series at home against the Dodgers in the first of week of May last year drew just 65,000.

6. A rivalry is reborn. As the attendance numbers show, Padres-Dodgers is back on. This was just the first three of 19 games between the clubs. Here's hoping those three games in San Diego the final week of the season will matter.

Lucky 13th: The Pirates had their own come-from-behind walk-off home run, this one from Starling Marte in the 13th inning to stun the A's:

That's now two games the A's have lost after leading in extra innings -- the same as the rest of MLB combined (ouch).

It's hard to know what to make of the Pirates. They just lost Jameson Taillon for at least four weeks with an elbow strain, so the strength of the team takes a hit. They're a game over .500, but have been outscored by 26 runs. They're 1-5 in blowout games and have been outscored 52-12 in those games. A poor record in blowout games is almost always a sign of a bad team, but the Pirates actually have good run prevention so far. They just haven't scored (only the Giants and Marlins have scored fewer runs), so they're rarely on the good end of a blowout.

Here's one reason if you want to believe in the Pirates:

If those four start playing better ... well, you never know.

Brewers sweep Mets: Quite the weekend at home for the Brewers. They won 3-1 on Friday as Josh Hader earned a two-inning save, striking out the final three batters with two runners on base. They won 4-3 in 18 innings on Saturday, with Ryan Braun singling in two runs to win it. With Hader unavailable, the bullpen allowed just two runs over 12⅔ innings. On Sunday, Christian Yelich returned to the starting lineup and did this:

Meanwhile, Lorenzo Cain made yet another spectacular catch:

He left the game with a hand bruise after slamming into the wall, but X-rays were negative.

In case you missed it: Cain's catch was amazing, but the play of the weekend went to Kevin Pillar on Saturday night:

Vlada Voronina announces arrival

Published in Table Tennis
Sunday, 05 May 2019 14:51

Notably earlier in the week, once again in partnership with Alina Zavarykina, she had reached the junior girls’ doubles semi-finals, as well as advancing to the quarter-final round of the junior girls’ singles competition.

In addition, the previous day, in harness with Anasatasiia Beresneva, the duo had been the cadet girls’ team runners up, a final contest in which they had experienced a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Chinese Taipei, Vlada Voronina losing by the very narrowest of margins to Chen Tsai-Ni (11-9, 11-4, 7-11, 6-11, 15-13).

One day later, Vlada Voronina turned the tables, at the semi-final stage of the cadet girls’ singles event she accounted for Chen Tsai-Ni in four games (8-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9), prior to securing the title at the final expense of the Czech Republic’s Helena Sommerova (11-9, 4-11, 11-6, 11-8).

Significantly, Helena Sommerova had reserved her place in the final courtesy of success against Alina Zavarykina (11-6, 13-11, 14-12).

Medals apart for Vlada Voronina and Alina Zavarykina; in the penultimate series of matches, it was success together; the duo overcame Germany’s Naomi Pranjkovic and Jele Stortz (11-9, 11-7, 11-6) to claim cadet girls’ doubles gold.

Meanwhile, there were also further titles for France; Alexis Kourachi emerged the cadet boys’ singles champion. After recording a semi-final success against colleague Felix Lebrun (3-11, 12-10, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6), he accounted for a further compatriot in the guise of Hugo Deschamps (11-7, 11-9, 11-7) to reserve the top step of the podium. In the counterpart semi-final, Hugo Deschamps had ousted Russia’s Denis Izumrudov (10-12, 12-10, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8).

Notably the previous day Alexis Kourachi in partnership with Milhane Jellouli had been a cadet boys’ team bronze medallist, an event won by Hugo Deschamps and Felix Lebrun.

On the concluding day of play, the pair enjoyed more success; they beat the combination formed by Hungary’s Erik Huzsvar and Felix Kohler to secure the cadet boys’ team title in what proved the closest final of the day. They succeeded by the very narrowest of margins in the fifth game (11-6, 8-11, 11-8, 5-11, 12-10).

Play concluded in Platja d’Aro, the next destination is Bangkok, the 2019 SET Thailand Junior and Cadet Open, a golden series tournament, commences on Wednesday 15th May.

African players hit the headlines

Increasingly he is gaining recognition in Nigeria, recently on Sunday 5th May, the Nation newspaper published the following:

The Nation – Sunday 5th May: OLAJIDE OMOTAYO: MY targets in table tennis

Furthermore, African players have been make their presence felt in Turkey; Egypt’s Mohamed El-Beiali and Ahmed Ali Saleh have proved integral to the success of Fenerbache in Turkey’s Elite Division.

On Sunday 5th May in Istanbul, the club completed the itinerary of 30 matches unbeaten; understandably, Mohamed El-Beiali completing his first season with the club was delighted with the achievement.

“It was a big feat for us, we won all our league matches. We played 30 matches on a home and away format without dropping anyone of them against the 15 other teams. The final match was explosive as we won 4-3 against Beshktash, I won two singles and one doubles in the encounter. It was a good experience for me being my first season with the team. I hope I can also win the Turkish Cup when we play on 8th or 9th June, we are yet to know our opponents.” Mohamed El-Beiali

The Egyptian star also believes the team can compete favourably in Europe next season.

Bas den Breejen remembered

Most notably Bas den Breejen was the Chair of the ITTF Media Committee, fulfilling the role under the tenure of three Presidents; Ichiro Igimura, Lollo Hammarlund and Xu Yinsheng. In that position he was present at the 1995 Team World Cup in Atlanta and one year later in the same city for the 1996 Olympic Games.

Furthermore, he occupied that position at the 1997 World Championships in Manchester before handing over office.

Ever enthusiastic, two years later at the 1999 World Championships in Eindhoven, the first occasion on which individual events only were staged, he was present in a different role. He organised a display of memorabilia. My abiding memory is the kindly smiling face greeting me with the words “my future is in the past”. It was an intriguing past, most certainly the display attracted a great deal of attention.

The sport at heart, in recognition of his services to the International Table Tennis Federation, Bas den Breejen received the ITTF Merit Award; moreover, also he was an honorary member of the Netherlands Table Tennis Federation and the recipient of the Order of Oranje-Nassau. A prestigious award, the Order of Orange-Nassau, founded on Monday 4th April 1892 by the Queen regent Emma, on behalf of her under age daughter Queen Wilhelmina is quoted as open to: “everyone who has earned special merits for society”. Bas den Breejen was most deserved recipient,

A memorial service was held on Friday 3rd May at the Dutch Reformed Church in Blaricum; a man with a caring, welcoming and gentle character, Bas den Breejen is sadly missed. Our condolences to his family.
