Sources: QB Smigiel pulls FSU commit for '26

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 26 January 2025 14:45

Four-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, ESPN's No. 36 overall recruit in the class of 2026, has decommitted from Florida State, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Sunday.

The 6-foot-5 Smigiel, ESPN's fourth-ranked pocket passer in the 2026 recruiting cycle, initially committed to Florida State in June, picking the Seminoles over Ohio State, Oregon and Washington. He now stands as the No. 2 uncommitted quarterback in the upcoming cycle, trailing only five-star quarterback and former Georgia pledge Jared Curtis (No. 4 overall).

Smigiel's decommitment comes one day after he received an in-home visit from Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly on Saturday. Michigan, South Carolina, Washington, UCLA and Michigan State also stand among the programs that are expected to be involved in Smigiel's recruitment moving forward.

A three-year starter at Newbury Park (California) High School, Smigiel led the program to a 14-1 record and a division title this past fall while throwing for 3,521 yards and 49 touchdowns in his junior season. Equipped with a strong arm, standout downfield accuracy and an ability to move within the pocket, Smigiel totaled 7,701 passing yards and 98 touchdowns across his first two high school campaigns in 2022 and 2023.

His exit from coach Mike Norvell's 2026 class stands as a significant loss for the Seminoles, who lost a total of 10 commitments in the final months of the 2025 cycle, including eight from the ESPN 300. Without Smigiel, Florida State now holds five commitments in the 2026 class, led by ESPN 300 athletes Efrem White (No. 112 overall) and Darryon Williams (No. 244).

Only eight of the 18 quarterbacks ranked in the 2026 ESPN 300 remain uncommitted more than 10 months out from the early signing period.

Sources: Penn St. finalizing deal for DC Knowles

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 26 January 2025 14:45

Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is finalizing a deal to become the new defensive coordinator at Penn State, sources told ESPN on Sunday.

Knowles is expected to agree to a three-year deal that will average $3.1 million per season, which will make him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football. He is believed to be the first coordinator in college football to make a base salary of at least $3 million.

Knowles made a base salary of $2.2 million last season, and his compensation got close to $3 million with bonuses in the wake of Ohio State's national title run. The Buckeyes extended an offer to Knowles, sources told ESPN, that would have made him the highest-paid coordinator in the country, ahead of Michigan's Wink Martindale and LSU's Blake Baker, who are both set to earn $2.5 million next season.

Knowles also received interest from Notre Dame and Oklahoma, sources told ESPN.

He led Ohio State to the No. 1 defense in the country this past season, finishing first in total defense and scoring defense at just 12.9 points per game. The Buckeyes were No. 3 in run defense and No. 3 in passing yards allowed.

The move marks a significant maneuver within the Big Ten, as Penn State returns a sizable core of its College Football Playoff team from 2024 and should be considered among the favorites for the national title next season.

Knowles will have some key players to work with. Defensive linemen Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zane Durant will be linchpins, along with cornerback A.J. Harris and linebacker Tony Rojas.

The return of quarterback Drew Allar and tailbacks Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, along with a strong offensive line, will be the root of Penn State's preseason optimism for 2025.

Knowles, who will replace new Clemson defensive coordinator Tom Allen, is a veteran coordinator who worked at Duke from 2010 to 2017 and Oklahoma State from 2018 to 2021. Knowles has been at Ohio State since 2022, with this past season's unit representing his best work. Ohio State is expected to have eight players from that 2024 defense drafted, including the entire starting line.

The Philadelphia native has had an unusual path through the sport, as he played at Cornell and began his coaching career at the Ivy League school in the late 1980s. He worked as Cornell's head coach from 2004 to 2009, going 26-34, before becoming the defensive coordinator at Duke.

He is coming off strong back-to-back seasons at Ohio State, as the Buckeyes finished No. 2 nationally in scoring defense in 2023.

Ohio State will be on the hunt for a new coordinator. The Buckeyes will return three starters from their national title defense, with all three set to be decorated in the preseason.

Safety Caleb Downs earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and will be among the top prospects for the 2026 NFL draft. Linebacker Sonny Styles is set to emerge as a top prospect after winning second-team all-conference honors, and cornerback Davison Igbinosun is a two-time honorable mention All-Big Ten performer who is returning with the goal of becoming a first-round pick.

The Washington Commanders versus the Philadelphia Eagles: Two NFC East teams battling to go to the Super Bowl. It's an outcome few could have predicted just a few months ago.

After all, weren't there rumblings about the job security of Eagles coach Nick Sirianni after a 2-2 start? That's before quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley and a stout defense powered the Eagles to 12 wins in their next 13 games.

The lone loss? To the Commanders in Week 16, of course.

Which brings us to Washington, where the second year under the Josh Harris ownership group has proved fruitful after sweeping changes following their initial 4-13 season. With first-time general manager Adam Peters, second-time head coach Dan Quinn and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders appeared poised for a feel-good turnaround season -- who could forget that Week 8 win off a Hail Mary -- but they've since proved they belong among the NFL's best after a 12-5 campaign followed by a divisional round upset of the top-seeded Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Daniels, the second overall pick last April, can become the first rookie quarterback to ever start in a Super Bowl, while Hurts is attempting to earn a second trip to the big game, where the Eagles fell short to the Kansas City Chiefs two seasons ago.

Sources: Cubs finalizing trade for reliever Pressly

Published in Baseball
Sunday, 26 January 2025 14:21

CHICAGO -- The Cubs are finalizing a trade to acquire closer Ryan Pressly from the Houston Astros, pending medical review, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Sunday.

Pressly will waive his no-trade clause to facilitate the move, and Houston will send money to help cover his $14 million salary, the sources said.

The Astros will receive a low-level prospect from the Cubs who is not on Chicago's 40-man roster, a source told ESPN.

Pressly, 36, is likely to become the Cubs' closer, a role he held with Houston from 2021 to 2023 before it signed Josh Hader to a long-term contract. The veteran righty has 112 saves with a 3.27 ERA compiled over his 12-year career, which includes six seasons in Minnesota.

Pressly will join a bullpen that blew 26 saves last season, as the Cubs are looking to make a playoff push in 2025. Chicago hasn't been to the postseason since 2020, working without an established closer over the past few years.

Righty Adbert Alzolay was ineffective last season and then got injured, eventually needing Tommy John surgery. Porter Hodge, 23, finished the season in the closer's role, but the team wanted more experience and depth in the back end of the bullpen.

The Cubs pursued lefty Tanner Scott before he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last weekend, according to league sources, but Chicago was less interested in the other free agent closers, instead settling for Pressly, who has one year left on a three-year, $42 million contract signed before the 2023 season.

Pressly will join newcomers Eli Morgan, Cody Poteet, Matt Festa, Caleb Thielbar and Rob Zastryzny in the Cubs' bullpen.

The trade likely will conclude the bulk of the team's winter moves.

Merciless Sinner wins back-to-back Melbourne titles

Published in Tennis
Sunday, 26 January 2025 04:42

Being dubbed the 'best men's player not to have won a Grand Slam title' is a tag Zverev is desperate to shake off.

As a teenager, Zverev followed older brother Mischa around on tour, but his talents soon saw him labelled as a prospective major champion.

Still the wait goes on.

From the opening exchanges against Sinner, Zverev looked more likely to break down in the baseline rallies.

He became impatient when Sinner targeted his more vulnerable forehand, with errors from that swing contributing to the German losing serve at 4-3.

Sinner demonstrated his all-court brilliance as he closed out the set.

Zverev finally buckled on a fourth break point when Sinner turned defence into attack, leaving the German only able to put a stretching volley into the net.

The venom of his groundstrokes were matched by the nimbleness of foot and sharp reaction at the net, before he clinched the lead with a precise ace out wide.

It was no wonder Zverev looked utterly demoralised and felt the need to go off court to collect his thoughts after just 46 minutes on the clock.

The questions continued to be posed by Sinner, though.

Even though he kept the set on serve, Zverev's furrowed expression suggested he did not believe he could break down his opponent.

A cruel net-cord that swung the second-set tie-break in Sinner's favour at 5-4 didn't help either.

Zverev was left with his hands on hips and angrily thumped his racquet into his bag after Sinner served out for a two-set lead.

The likelihood of Zverev turning the deficit around looked slim and a single break of serve in the sixth game was enough for Sinner to roll home.

Argentina's Carreras 'in demand' - Skivington

Published in Rugby
Sunday, 26 January 2025 03:35

Gloucester have put their "best foot forward" to keep Argentina full-back Santiago Carreras amid speculation about him leaving the club this summer, director of rugby George Skivington has said.

Versatile Carreras has been with the Cherry and Whites since December 2020, initially playing in both wing positions, and has made more than 75 appearances.

The 26-year-old, who can also play at fly-half, has been one of Gloucester's stand-out players in recent seasons and scored his fourth try of the campaign in the win against Leicester on Saturday.

"I haven't got any comments on the future of Santi," Skivington told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"It's up to Santi what he does, we've put our best foot forward and that will be up to Santi."

Carreras has been capped 53 times by the Pumas since his debut in 2019.

"He's obviously a man in demand and certain things come with that and that's the nature of the beast," Skivington added.

Porsche Out Front At Midway Point In Rolex 24

Published in Racing
Saturday, 25 January 2025 23:28

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.  Porsche Penske Motorsport paces the 63rd Rolex 24 At Daytona at the halfway mark of the 24-hour endurance classic that kicks off the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season. That said, the seventh to 12th hours reduced the number of contenders after some strong middle third stints.

Leading runs from Kamui Kobayashi in the No. 40 Cadillac Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac V-Series.R, in Grand Touring Prototype and Max Hesse, in the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 EVO in Grand Touring Daytona Pro, in particular, went up in smoke.

The races complexion across multiple classes changed significantly with a multi-car accident exiting Turn 2 just after the start of the eighth hour.

When Louis Deletraz lost the rear of the No. 40 Cadillac, the resulting spin created an accordion effect that took out more cars. Three Le Mans Prototype 2 class entries: the Nos. 2 (United Autosports USA), 8 (Tower Motorsports) and 73 (Pratt Miller) ORECA LMP2 07 cars collected substantial damage. Two other Grand Touring Daytona Pro cars collided separately in avoidance, as Jordan Pepper in the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2 appeared to push Hesses No. 48 BMW off the road.

All five drivers involved in the incident were evaluated and released. Deletraz took responsibility for the spin that started it all.

On the restart, the yellow car of JDC went inside and just going to power and I think I spun, he explained. I dont think anything happened. I dont think I was touched and then I got collected. It was my mistake, and I am sorry to the team and sorry to my teammates as well. A sad way to end the 24.

Hesse described his frustration from the BMW side: I was very aware of what was happening; the people behind me werent. So obviously it was crazy chaos going on. I was able to avoid the car ahead but just got hit very hard in the rear.

Another contender fell out in the 11th hour. Frederik Vesti spun the No. 31 Cadillac Whelen Cadillac V-Series.R in-between NASCAR Turns 3 and 4 with right rear damage from an apparent rear suspension issue.

With the 12-car GTP field cut down to the lead lap in half by a mix of incidents and penalties, its left the No. 7 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 of Felipe Nasr out front ahead of the No. 60 Acura Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb-Agajanian Acura ARX-06 of Scott Dixon. Cadillac has one remaining challenger in the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing entry, while the polesitting No. 24 BMW M Hybrid V8 also remained in the hunt.

Paul Miller Racing led its second six-hour stint in as many efforts, with its No. 1 BMW M4 GT3 EVO of Neil Verhagen pacing Grand Touring Daytona Pro. The No. 77 AO Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R (992), Rexy, worked to come back from being caught up in the multiple car incident from earlier up to second, ahead of the two Ford Multimatic Motorsports Ford Mustang GT3s.

As they were at the six-hour mark, Inception Racing also led Grand Touring Daytona (GTD) at the 12-hour mark. Frederik Schandorff was behind the wheel of that teams No. 70 Ferrari 296 GT3. Schandorff withstood consistent pressure from Ayhancan Guven in the No. 120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R (992).

Inter Europol Competition, former partners with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports, surpassed its former partner team to pace the LMP2 class at the 12-hour mark. Antonio Felix da Costa was aboard prior to the halfway point in the teams No. 43 ORECA LMP2 07.

Zach Johnson Conquers Early Thaw

Sunday, 26 January 2025 04:01

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. The halfway point of the Ernie Mincy Early Thaw Memorial at Central Arizona Raceway was reached Saturday night with 131 entries in the six divisions.

Late model action had Zach Johnson getting the good start with Ricky Weiss a second behind. By lap nine, Johnson was in traffic and on lap 19 in turn three was caught behind a car and Weiss got past on the low side.

But the yellow was needed and the lap was not completed.

Johnson had no problems after the restart and collected the win. Clayton Stuckey passed Weiss on lap 19 to finish second and Weiss was third.

Tom Berry Jr. took off in the modified main and by the halfway mark Kollin Hibdon was closing. A yellow flag with seven laps remaining gave Hibdon an opportunity.

But Berry Jr. maintained a half second lead and collected the win over Hibdon with Jason Blood finishing third.

The limited mod main was a flag-to-flag drive for Jess Brekke for the win. Jake Smith was close for a couple laps but Brekke stretched his lead. Smith finished second and Lucas Rodin was third.

Stock car action featured a three wide battle for the lead out of turn four on lap three and it was Shelby Williams who was first across the line.

Williams led the remaining laps to win while Kaden Woodie was second and Jason Rogers finished third.

Ryan Perry won his second main of the week in Northern sport mods with a flag-to-flag win. Payce Herrera looked like a significant threat was likely but a car length or two was the gap each lap. Jake Kierstead was third behind Herrera.

The super stock main belonged to Max Nelson for a win. Nelson has a first, second and a third place finish on opening week.

Next Thursday the second week of the Ernie Mincy Early Thaw Memorial will race three more times. Watch all the action on SPEEDSPORT.tv.

Huddleston Holds The Line In ARCA West Score

Published in Racing
Sunday, 26 January 2025 04:04

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. Trevor Huddleston wasnt going to be denied during Saturdays ARCA Menards Series West season-opening West Coast Stock Car Motorsports Hall of Fame 150 at Kevin Harvicks Kern Raceway.

Last season, Huddleston lost the season opener in a photo finish and he had to hold off the late charge of Kyle Keller to avoid a similar fate this season.

Huddleston kept Keller in his rearview mirror as the laps trickled down. As Keller pulled alongside at the white flag, Huddleston successfully used the slower car of David Smith as a pick to win for the first time at Kern Raceway.

Thats how you race a race, Huddleston said. [Keller] ran it perfect and didnt use me up at all. He was going for that win, but he got unlucky with [Smith] there. I saw that out my windshield, and I had to do what I had to do.

No opposition stood in Huddlestons way for most of Saturdays feature until Keller and 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Daniel Hemric gradually chipped away at his lead in the closing stages. A flat tire eliminated Hemric from contention and left Keller chasing Huddleston.

Keller was seeking his first series victory but he had no intention of roughing up Huddleston to win.

Trevor Huddleston (Tom Macht photo)

It was wreck Trevor or race him clean, Keller said. We had a good photo finish there, then I got behind the lapped car and thought I had to take a right. I tried to put it in the middle, but it was either stuff him in the fence or dog it until the end.

Im never going to race Trevor dirty, and were going to race good all year against each other.

Huddlestons victory, his sixth in the West Series, established himself as the early favorite for the 2025 title over Keller and the rest of the full-time competitors. The past two seasons have seen Huddleston inch closer to that career milestone with consecutive third-place finishes in the West Series point standings.

Im pretty sure my crew chief Jeff Shrader was a little mad at me, Huddleston said. He thought I was pushing it a little too hard, but he kept me calm. It was all [my team]. They made it happen today.

Tanner Reif placed third Saturday in his first race with Central Coast Racing. Kellers teammate Robbie Kennealy and Eric Johnson Jr. completed the top five.

Lawrence Triumphs, Roczen Gains Point Lead

Published in Racing
Sunday, 26 January 2025 04:05

ANAHEIM, Calif.  Team Honda HRC Progressives Jett Lawrence took an impressive win amid wet track conditions inside Angel Stadium.

It was the defending Monster Energy AMA Supercross and SMX World Championship champs first win of the season, and it was a thriller with four to five racers battling for the lead for much of the race.

Progressive Insurance ECSTAR Suzukis Ken Roczen came out of the exciting main event battle with a second-place finish and becomes the third points leader after three rounds.

Monster Energy Kawasakis Jason Anderson took over the lead six minutes into the race and held the spot for approximately eight laps. Anderson battled hard and finished the night with a third-place finish. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racings Eli Tomac, the points leader going into the race, recovered from a near-last start to earn a seventh-place finish.

You have to be very patient [racing in those conditions]. Jason was riding really well, and I was struggling to find anywhere to gain on him or try to make a pass, Lawrence said. He had to get a little risky in the whoops I think we both got sketchy through them. I was being very patient and trying not to rush anything. Lap by lap I just hit my marks. There was the rain, my goggles were fogging up a little bit, but were happy to get that [win]. Were better than we were at the last round at Anaheim, so thats good. On to the next round in Arizona.

Roczen moved into the point lead.

Its an absolute dream. After I was in position last week for a possible third, I came back [to the truck and] was thinking it would be so rad to share a red plate with Eli, Roczen said. And just to have a red plate, its been a long time, especially on a Suzuki. I wasnt able to make [a win] happen tonight. This was an absolutely insane race. We were in a battle the whole way, and it was awesome. With the rain and how hardpacked the dirt was, it was very slippery out there, but I just kept my focus the whole way After making a [first] pass stick on Jason I hit neutral, and he got me back. I was bummed because its a lot of work to get by.

In 250SX class racing, Haiden Deegan grabbed the holeshot with Red Bull KTM Factory Racings Julien Beaumer in second. Beaumer made an aggressive pass attempt in the second corner that brought the two racers together for the second time that night.

Deegan held the lead and quickly pulled out a cushion to never be challenged again even as heavy rain came down late in the race. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racings Cole Davies earned his first professional podium in just his third professional Supercross race; it came courtesy of a last-lap mistake from Triumph Racings Jordon Smith who was challenging for the second-place spot when he crashed in the whoops. The 250SX Class podium consisted of three teenagers; it was the first all-teen podium since 2011. Team Honda HRC Progressives Jo Shimoda, winner of the season opener, put in a steady ride, despite having two broken fingers, to move from 10th place up to sixth at the checkers.

You pissed off the bull last week, Deegan said. Juju ran his mouth so its time to lock in. You dont want to piss me off because I come out swinging. A big thanks to my team, they put a lot of work in this week. We grinded from morning until the end of the day, multiple times. We got the bike dialed keep talking and Ill come out swinging.
