CONCORD, N.C. Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing (RFK) announced Tuesday that NASCAR veteran Derrick Finley will serve as the Crew Chief for the organizations third NASCAR Cup Series entry, the No. 60 Ford Mustang driven by Ryan Preece, in the upcoming season.

Finley, who joined RFK in 2022, brings over 20 years of experience as a NASCAR crew chief. In addition to leading as a crew chief on multiple occasions, his career within the NASCAR ecosystem includes roles such as Director of Operations, Technical Director, and Competition Director with various organizations.

RFK will rely on his strategic insight, leadership skills, and technical expertise to ensure that the No. 60 is fully integrated into RFK as it expands to a  three-car organization in 2025.

Notably, Finley served as the crew chief for the #Stage60 program throughout the 2024 season, leading the No. 60 team in three races with drivers David Ragan (Daytona), Cam Waters (Sonoma) and Joey Hand (Chicago).

Were thrilled to have Derrick lead the No. 60 team, said RFK driver/co-owner Brad Keselowski. His experience and technical knowledge of the sport will play a crucial role in the initial development and growth of the No. 60 team.

I am incredibly excited to lead the No. 60 team, said Finley. Im looking forward to working with Ryan (Preece) and the entire team. Its a great opportunity to help start up a new team as we continue to grow at RFK Racing.

Derrick will be a big help in getting the team integrated in the RFK processes added Preece. His experience with the procedures the organization has in place will help lay the foundation for the No. 60 car.

Finley, who holds a mechanical engineering degree from the University of New Mexico, provides a unique blend of hands-on technical and engineering experience that will be of great benefit to the young team.

Wilkesboro Dragway Joins The WDRA

Tuesday, 14 January 2025 14:02

NORWALK, Ohio The World Drag Racing Alliance (WDRA) and Wilkesboro Dragway will join forces, effective immediately, as the historic North Carolina facility has signed a multi-year sanction agreement to become part of the Alliance.

The Ellis family built the historic facility in 1955 as a quarter-mile dirt dragstrip with no return road.  Seventy years later, David and Stacey Staten have taken control of North Carolinas longest-running dragstrip with full intentions of continuing the tracks legacy. Several renovations are underway on the track and the facility buildings, with an opening day scheduled for March 1.

Racing will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to include various programs, such as grudge, no prep, bracket racing, daily driver and test and tune events.

Wilkesboro Dragway is very important to the North Carolina drag racing community, said Josh Peake with the WDRA. The track is going on seventy years now, and multiple generations of racing families have called Wilkesboro home.

I appreciate David and Stacy Staten for placing their trust in the WDRA to help them with their new venture running the facility.

Wilkesboro racers will now have an opportunity to participate in the WDRA Summit Sportsman Drag Racing Series presented by SunCoast Performance in hopes of qualifying for the WDRA Summit World Championship event at Montgomery Intl Dragway at the end of the season.

Team Wilkesboro Dragway will also be invited to compete during the WDRA Summit Southeast Bracket Finals presented by Laris Motorsports Insurance at GALOT Motorsports Park on Oct. 2-5.

We are very excited to join the WDRA family, said Wilkesboros David Staten.  As new track managers, there is a lot to learn.  WDRA has been easy to work with and a great resource for us.

Pulisic limps off injured in Milan's win over Como

United States midfielder Christian Pulisic limped off with another injury in AC Milan's win against Como on Tuesday.

Pulisic, who had only just returned from a torn muscle in his right calf, held his left calf and then pointed to his thigh after a clash with Como defender Marc-Oliver Kempf just before half-time in the Serie A clash.

Pulisic, 26, was seen to by Milan medical staff soon after and substituted. While he limped off the field on his own accord, Pulisic is now a doubt for the crucial game against Juventus on Saturday.

"We need to improve in our fitness levels," Milan boss Sergio Conceicao said afterward. "Because we need intensity for my football and at this moment we are missing something,"

Pulisic missed most of December with a calf injury and returned to the team in style, scoring in both the semifinal and final of the Italian Super Cup.

He has five goals and four assists for Milan in Serie A this season, tied for the team's best in both categories.

Milan went on to beat Como 2-1, with defender Theo Hernández and forward Rafael Leão scoring in the second half.

Slot 'couldn't ask for more' vs. contenders Forest

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 14 January 2025 19:01

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has said he "couldn't have asked for more" from his side against title contenders Nottingham Forest.

Forest held the league leaders to a 1-1 draw at The City Ground on Tuesday night, with a Diogo Jota header in the second-half cancelling out an early goal by the in-form Chris Wood.

Liverpool looked far from their best against Nuno Espirito Santo's side, but they remain six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with a game in hand on many of the teams below them, and Slot was quick to commend the efforts of his players after the match.

"I couldn't have asked for more today," the Dutchman said. "I think that most people would talk really positively about the second half but if you play at this ground against this team who are in such good form, hardly concedes a chance in every single game, and have so many counter-attack threats.

"We conceded only one counter-attack today in 98 minutes of football. That's total domination."

He added: "Being 1-0 down here, and they're so hard to score against this team. It's not what we wanted. We wanted three points, but what I want and what the fans and the players should want is for them to give it their all during every single game they play and that's what they did today."

It was another impressive display by Forest, though goalkeeper Mats Selz was forced into action several times in the second half to keep out Jota and Cody Gakpo.

Asked whether he views Forest as genuine title contenders, Slot said: "I don't think they are here because of luck. For every team, they are difficult to play against. They have already had some difficult away games, against [Manchester] United, [Man] City, Arsenal, us.

"That shows you that they are a team that can compete in the top end of the league table."

Slot's opposing number felt the same about the performance of his surprise package Forest side and applauded the fans for the "special atmosphere" they created on the night.

"Tonight was a lesson for us, because this is how we want to compete," Nuno said. "I am very proud of how we played.

"Tonight was a special atmosphere. I don't look at the league table at this stage, we have to keep going."

Klopp: I'll throw party if City have titles stripped

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 14 January 2025 19:01

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has said he would throw a party on the island of Mallorca should the Premier League strip Manchester City of their titles due to breaches of financial regulations.

Klopp's Liverpool finished second to Pep Guardiola and his all-conquering City team twice, first in 2018-19 and again in 2021-22.

The Premier League referred City to an independent commission in February 2023 over 115 alleged contraventions of financial rules dating from 2009 to 2018. The club have always denied any wrongdoing.

At his first public appearance as Red Bull's head of global soccer, Klopp was asked about how he would react should the commission find City guilty and remove the league titles from their honours list.

"We had this discussion when I left," Klopp said. "I haven't spent a lot of time in Mallorca because I am always flying around the place. But if it would happen, I told all the people who wanted to [come]: 'Just book a flight to Mallorca. I will buy the beer!' We'd have our own parade in my garden."

The German coach added that he had not followed the details of the hearing, which began in September last year, and that he did not know when a verdict was due.

Klopp was also questioned on the ongoing contract sagas around three of Liverpool's key players during his tenure.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are all out of contract at the end of the season, with Klopp's replacement Arne Slot frequently asked about the trio's futures at his news conferences.

"I'm so happy I'm not in charge with that situation and having to answer those questions every week," Klopp joked.

"I'd love all three of them to extend their contracts. They don't tell me what is going on. When Virgil is 41 to 44, I'm sure he'd love to play for New York ... I'd welcome him with open arms."

Klopp told the news conference that he hoped Salah would stay at the club, naming him as Liverpool's greatest striker of the modern era, as well as going on a tirade about this summer's FIFA Club World Cup.

"I think it's useless. It doesn't help if you have no summer break," he said.

"Who wins the tournament is the poorest winner of all time because he has to play the whole summer through and then the league starts again. We have now a lot of injuries in European football.

"We have to reduce the amount of games. That means in some leagues it would be better [if] you have 18 instead of 20. That means in other competitions, you don't add games."

City throw away two-goal lead in Brentford draw

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 14 January 2025 19:01

Manchester City threw away a two-goal lead as Yoane Wissa and Christian Nørgaard scored late goals to earn hosts Brentford a 2-2 draw in a Premier League thriller on Tuesday.

After suffering six league defeats in November and December, City had bounced back with a draw against Everton and wins over Leicester City and West Ham, but Tuesday's late collapse brought their short-lived revival to an abrupt halt.

The point leaves them sixth in the table on 35 points, 12 adrift of leaders Liverpool who drew 1-1 at second-placed Nottingham Forest, while the Bees are 10th on 28 points after a most unlikely comeback.

After struggling to create chances in the first half, Man City winger Savinho went close to breaking the deadlock in the 50th minute, marauding forward through the left channel before thumping a shot off the foot of the post.

Two minutes later Erling Haaland headed straight at the keeper when he really should have scored.

The breakthrough finally came for City in the 66th minute when a brilliant ball from the right by Kevin De Bruyne was met with a deft volley from Foden, who steered it in at the far post.

The game should have been over when Foden made it 2-0 12 minutes later, reacting quickest to rattle home the rebound after Savinho's initial shot was saved to silence the home crowd.

Four minutes later, however, Brentford's Wissa ensured a nervy finish when he fired home from close range to reduce the deficit, and with City's defenders having made several last-ditch interventions to protect their lead, they should have been aware of the threat posed by Brentford.

Denmark international Nørgaard completed the comeback two minutes into added time, getting enough power on his glancing header to send it past Stefan Ortega, despite the City keeper getting a strong hand to it.

City manager Pep Guardiola was animated at the final whistle, both hugging and berating his goalkeeper after another underwhelming display by his side.

"We just looked tired at the end in the last 20 minutes, we looked leggy," Foden said. "They put longer balls into the box and we didn't deal with the physicality in the end.

"It's definitely picked up from previously and performances are a lot better than they were. We've still got steps to go to where we want to be but as long as we keep making them small steps and improving that's what we're aiming to do."

Things were a lot brighter for the Brentford players after their display of character was rewarded with a point.

"I don't know how we did it," Nørgaard said. "We stayed in the game even though we were 2-0 down. We hung in there ... And I'm proud of the way we managed to come back in the game.

"We aren't here to lose by one so when Wissa got one back ... I don't know how I ended up there but it was nice to see it go in. Even though I'm not a striker I tend to listen in the meetings. I just attacked the gap and I was fortunate to see it go in."

NOTTINGHAM, England -- Arne Slot is no stranger to being serenaded on the touchline. Adored at previous club Feyenoord Rotterdam, the Liverpool head coach has quickly grown accustomed to hearing supporters at Anfield -- and in away ends up and down the country -- singing his praises from the terraces as his team have so masterfully swept nearly all before them.

But on Tuesday night, it was the Nottingham Forest fans who made Slot the subject of their attentions as Nuno Espirito Santo's side battled to halt their visitors' march toward the Premier League title, holding Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at The City Ground.

"Arne Slot, it's happening again!" crowed the Forest fans after Chris Wood notched his 13th league goal of the season to give the hosts the lead inside eight minutes. Indeed, for more than an hour of this contest, it looked as if Forest were about to inflict just Liverpool's second league defeat of the season, having also dispatched Slot's men at Anfield in September.

That Liverpool fought back to clinch a precious point, secured via a 66th-minute header from Diogo Jota, is a testament to both the Reds' character and quality. However, Tuesday night's epic at The City Ground offered further proof -- if it were needed -- that there are still plenty more twists and turns to come in this title race.

If, on the eve of this Premier League season, this game had been billed as a potential title decider, few would have been inclined to take notice. After all, Forest finished last term in 17th place, just six points outside of the relegation zone.

It is for that reason September's shock triumph at Anfield caused such a stir, with even Slot himself conceding Liverpool's conquerors that day "do not normally end up in the top 10." But that win has since proved to be more than a flash in the pan, with Forest having continued to impress, defying expectation to climb up to second in the table.

A victory against the league leaders on Tuesday would have seen Forest move to within three points of the top spot, and perhaps that prospect was weighing heavily on the minds of Slot's players as they toiled on the banks of the River Trent.

Admittedly, it has not been a particularly happy new year for Liverpool. After bidding farewell to 2024 with a statement victory against strugglers West Ham United, the first two weeks of 2025 have seen cracks start to appear in the Reds' previously impenetrable armour.

Liverpool's 4-0 victory over League Two side Accrington Stanley at the weekend was their first win since the turn of the year, following a pulsating draw with Manchester United in the league and a narrow defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals.

Against Forest, all the early signs seemed to point to Liverpool's descent into a mini-crisis as a combination of poor decision-making and erratic finishing meant Slot's side headed into the interval without having registered a single shot on target.

Liverpool did improve slightly after the break, but it wasn't until Slot turned to his bench that his team were able to make the breakthrough. The introduction of Jota and Kostas Tsimikas, in place of Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson, proved to be a masterstroke as, just 22 seconds after the substitution was made, Liverpool were level; Jota having headed home from Tsimikas' corner.

After that, Slot's side appeared to recover some of the swagger that has defined much of their season to date, with only the interventions of an inspired Matz Sels in the Forest goal and some admirable last-ditch defending keeping Liverpool at bay.

"I couldn't have asked for more today," Slot admitted in his post-match news conference. "I think that most people would talk really positively about the second half but if you play at this ground against this team who are in such good form, who hardly concede a chance in every single game, and have so many counter-attack threats .. we conceded only one counter-attack today in 98 minutes of football. That's total domination."

While those of a Forest persuasion might beg to differ with Slot's assertion, Liverpool's second-half display at least ensures they retain their six-point cushion at the top of the table. The league leaders no longer appear infallible but one look at the rest of Tuesday night's results is irrefutable proof that they do not need to be.

Both Manchester City and Chelsea dropped points while Arsenal, who will face bitter rivals Tottenham on Wednesday, have also looked some way off their best in recent weeks, with striker Gabriel Jesus now having joined stricken talisman Bukayo Saka on the sidelines.

Forest, of course, remain a threat, having proved on Tuesday that they are capable of going toe-to-toe with the very best.

"I don't think they are here because of luck," Slot conceded. "For every team, they are difficult to play against. They have already had some difficult away games, against United, City, Arsenal, us. That shows you that they are a team that can compete in the top end of the league table."

But while Forest and Co. will keep applying the pressure, Liverpool must simply look to keep their heads. It might not be the procession to the title that looked to be taking shape just a few weeks ago but, for now at least, Slot's side remain firmly in the driving seat.

New South Wales allrounder Jack Edwards has been named captain of a youthful Australia A 12-man squad to face England Lions in the upcoming four-day game in Sydney from January 30, with the squad also featuring two other fast-bowling allrounders in Aaron Hardie and Will Sutherland.
Kurtis Patterson, 31, has also been recalled to the Australia A fold for the first time since 2020 and is the oldest player in the squad.
Australia's selectors have pushed for youth and have only retained five players from the squad that faced India A in two four-day games in October and November, with Jordan Buckingham, Fergus O'Neill, Josh Philippe, Corey Rocchiccioli and Brendan Doggett all getting another opportunity, although Doggett was only drafted into that series as a late injury replacement.
There was no room for Marcus Harris, Jimmy Peirson or Nathan McAndrew, who performed solidly in the second Australia A game in Melbourne. Former Test batters Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb were also not selected. The latter was very close to being selected for the Sri Lanka Test tour and is currently captaining the Cricket Australia XI against England Lions in the first match of the tour in Brisbane.

Cameron Bancroft is unavailable through injury after fracturing his shoulder in the BBL. Veteran two-Test seamer Michael Neser, who injured his hamstring in the Australia A game at the MCG, has also not been selected.

The selectors showed how much they valued performances in the Australia A matches during the Test series against India with Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas and Beau Webster all selected for their Test debuts after good performances against India A. Doggett was also called into the Test squad for the second and third Tests as fast-bowling cover following his stunning 6 for 15 against India A in Mackay.
CA contracted fast bowler Xavier Bartlett gets an opportunity after missing the two Australia A matches with a side injury. He took 5 for 32 in his last first-class match for Queensland before the BBL break.
By overlooking Harris, Renshaw and Handscomb, the selectors are looking to the future on the batting front with the exception of Patterson. Jayden Goodwin and Tim Ward, like Patterson, have been rewarded for outstanding recent Shield form despite all three not being in the first-choice XIs of their respective states early in the Shield summer.

Ward, 26, played four matches for Australia A against New Zealand A in 2023 and made three half-centuries in eight innings but was dropped by Tasmania last season. However, he has bounced back strongly with scores of 51, 92, 96, 7 and 142 since being recalled by Tasmania in November.

Goodwin, 23, is currently playing in the CA XI alongside Ward and is highly regarded by the national selectors despite only averaging 32.38 across 27 first-class innings. But he made scores of 94, 139 and 69 in Shield cricket in November with the latter two coming against South Australia in a pink-ball game, which featured Doggett and Australian white-ball pacer Spencer Johnson.

Hardie is the only member of the Australia A squad who is also in Australia's Champions Trophy squad. He has not been bowling recently due to an ongoing quad issue and has only played one first-class match this summer after a lean season with the bat last year in red-ball cricket. But he has scored a century for Australia A previously in New Zealand in 2023.

Sutherland, 25, is the only full-time Shield captain in the squad, but Edwards captained NSW in three Shield games prior to the BBL break, standing in for the absent Moises Henriques, and is NSW's permanent 50-over captain. It will be the first time Edwards has represented Australia A, having played all 37 of his first-class matches for NSW, averaging 28.21 with the bat and 26.69 with the ball.

Australia A squad: Jack Edwards (capt), Xavier Bartlett, Brendan Doggett, Jordan Buckingham, Jayden Goodwin, Aaron Hardie, Fergus O'Neill, Kurtis Patterson, Josh Philippe (wk), Corey Rocchiccioli , Will Sutherland, Tim Ward

Australia keep finding a way to beat England, thanks in large part to the brilliance of Alana King and the bowlers, but the legspinner feels the batting group can make some adjustments ahead of the third ODI in Hobart after an extraordinary collapse almost cost them the game in Melbourne on Tuesday.
Australia hold a four-point lead in the multi-format Ashes series after winning the first two ODIs. In the second at the Junction Oval, they defended 181 despite losing 8 for 49 after being 131 for 2 batting first, with King claiming 4 for 25 with the ball.
The bowlers have been holding their end of the bargain, with the spin duo of King and Ash Gardner causing England no end of problems.

But Australia's batting has been shaky. They have been bowled out inside 50 overs in two of their last three ODIs and they lost six wickets chasing just 205 in the first ODI against England and were fortunate not to lose more.

King said the batters will have a conversation about adjusting their methods ahead of the third ODI in Hobart on Friday.

"I think it's maybe just adapting to conditions a lot better and trying to find a way of scoring when it's quite tricky," she said after the second ODI. "They've got some world-class bowlers - [Sophie] Ecclestone is the No. 1 bowler in the world at the moment - so just trying to find ways to still be positive against her and even [Lauren] Filer at the top. You know she's got the raw pace and aggression, so there's no doubt there'll be some conversations had between now and the next one in Hobart. But I'm sure we'll adapt as quick as we can."

Australia have been able to adapt with the ball in both games so far. They have been shocked by the amount of spin on offer at both North Sydney Oval and the Junction Oval in Melbourne, and King and Gardner have thrived as a result.

"I'm pretty stoked that there's a bit of bounce and spin, a lot of purchase as well," King said. "I'm going to stick to my strengths and that's still bowling it really well, ripping it out of my hands, and get as much as I can out of the wicket. That's just finding my pace, but more importantly, finding my length."

"I'm grateful and very privileged whenever I get to put on the jersey. I absolutely love it, and I love this group, and I'll do anything to help this group win and put us in good situations, I guess. And if that's bowling some hard overs, I'm more than happy to do that for the skipper and do what's best for the team"

Alana King

King's length control was impeccable throughout her spell in the second game. Her delivery to knock over Danni Wyatt-Hodge was the perfect legbreak. It drifted into leg stump, pitched and spun sharply past Wyatt-Hodge's front-foot defence and hit the top of off. Wyatt-Hodge wore a look of complete bemusement as King and Australia celebrated. But even King wasn't sure how much it had turned.

"I've not really seen it, so I'll let you know when I've had a couple of looks at it," King said. "She's a pretty dangerous player, so to see the back of her pretty early on was pretty special."

King is in a purple patch of form after barely bowling in the first four ODIs she played this summer. King bowled just 13.1 overs across the three-match series against India in December, taking four wickets at 17.50 and a strike rate of 19.75.

But in her last three ODIs, she has bowled 26 overs for figures of 3 for 34, 2 for 35 and 4 for 25. She has not played a T20I since the 2023 World Cup final, with Georgia Wareham Australia's preferred legspinner in that format. It would be a surprise if King is not considered for the T20Is against England in this series and she's certainly willing to put her hand up.

"I'm grateful and very privileged whenever I get to put on the jersey," King said. "I absolutely love it, and I love this group, and I'll do anything to help this group win and put us in good situations, I guess. And if that's bowling some hard overs, I'm more than happy to do that for the skipper and do what's best for the team. So absolutely love playing for Australia, and there's no doubt I love the Ashes as well."

Siegemund, 36, shocks 5-seed, '24 finalist Zheng

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 14 January 2025 19:01

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng won't be repeating her surprising run to the Australian Open final in 2025 after a second-round upset loss to No. 97-ranked Laura Siegemund on Wednesday.

Zheng lost the 2024 championship match at Melbourne Park to Aryna Sabalenka and went on to win the Olympic gold medal in Paris and finish runner-up at the WTA Finals in a breakout season.

But her first tournament of the year ended in a 7-6 (3), 6-3 loss on John Cain Arena against 36-year-old Siegemund, who played aggressively from the first point and put Zheng off her game.

At 36, Siegemund is the third-oldest player to beat a WTA top-five player at the Australian Open in the past 30 years. The only one older: Serena Williams, who did so at 39 years old in 2021 (defeated No. 2 Simona Halep) and as a 37-year-old in 2019 (defeated No. 1 Halep).

Sabalenka, the two-time defending champion, extended her run to 16 wins at Melbourne Park by winning the last five games to beat No. 54-ranked Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-3, 7-5.

The score line didn't indicate the difficulty of the match, with Bouzas Maneiro taking huge swipes at the ball in her Australian Open debut and dictating some of the points against the world No. 1-ranked player. Her serve let her down, with Sabalenka able to relieve some pressure on her own serve with five breaks.

No. 7 Jessica Pegula had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Elise Mertens to reach the third round, along with Belinda Bencic and No. 23 Magdalena Frech.

Siegemund has never been past the third round in Australia, but is taking confidence from her big upset. Her only lapse was when she was broken serving for the first set. She recovered to dominate the tiebreaker, while Zheng remained too conservative in her tactics until right near the end.

"I knew I just had to play more than my best test. I had nothing to lose. I just told myself to swing free," Siegemund said. Zheng is "an amazing player. One of the best players right now, but I know I can play well and I wanted to show that to myself."

Siegemund became the first unseeded German woman to defeat a top-five seed at the Australian Open since 2003, when Marlene Weingartner ousted Jennifer Capriati in the opening round.
