Scotland aim to 'finish on high' against Ireland

Published in Rugby
Thursday, 24 April 2025 06:25

Scotland are six points behind the visitors, having lost three in a row since beating the Welsh on the opening weekend.

"This weekend is about finishing on a high," said head coach Bryan Easson. "It's about everything coming together post some really good performances and some really difficult stages in games.

"We've learned a lot about ourselves and now have an opportunity to put together those learnings on the pitch."

Scotland finished one point in the table behind the Irish in 2024, losing 15-12 in Belfast.

"Ireland are a very physical side and we have to fight fire with fire," added Easson. "I see it being tight - last year was a difficult one for us to take.

"We believe we can put Ireland under pressure if we get our processes right."

Scotland open their World Cup campaign against Wales in late August and will also meet Fiji and Canada, with matches taking place in Manchester and Exeter.

"We don't have long before we come back in for World Cup preparation," said Easson.

"I think we're on track. We've capped seven players in this Six Nations, we're working hard on growing the base around the squad."

Ireland without injured Wafer against Scotland

Ireland coach Scott Bemand has named two uncapped players in his matchday squad for their Women's Six Nations finale away to Scotland on Saturday, but Aoife Wafer misses out through injury.

Munster's Aoife Corey will make her debut at full-back in Edinburgh as she takes the place of Stacey Flood who drops to the bench.

In the only other change to the backline from the win away to Wales last weekend, Vicky Elmes Kinlan is promoted from the replacements and will make her first Six Nations start on the wing in place of Anna McGann.

Loose-head prop Niamh O'Dowd is fit again and will return to the number one jersey, joining Neve Jones and Linda Djougang in the front row.

With number eight Wafer missing out through a knee injury sustained at Rodney Parade last week, Fiona Tuite comes into the second row alongside Ruth Campbell with Dorothy Wall moving back to blind-side flanker.

Brittany Hogan switches from the six jersey to number eight, with captain Edel McMahon again lining out at open-side flanker.

Munster lock Jane Clohessy, the daughter of former Ireland international prop Peter Clohessy, is named among the replacements and will make her debut if called upon.

Scotland have welcomed back captain Rachel Malcolm and scrum-half Leia Brebner-Holden to their side.

Ireland are seeking a third away win of the campaign after already beating Italy and Wales on the road.

Ireland: Corey; Elmes Kinlan, Dalton, Breen, Costigan; O'Brien, Scuffil-McCabe; O'Dowd, Jones, Djougang, Campbell, Tuite, Wall, McMahon (capt), Hogan.

Replacements: Moloney, McGrath, Haney, Clohessy, Boles, Lane, Higgins, Flood.

Lynn warns Wales to respond or face World Cup axe

Published in Rugby
Thursday, 24 April 2025 07:25

Lynn is likely to make changes for what is - just as last year's final game against Italy - a must-win match on Sunday.

Wales were brushed aside by a rampant Ireland who made twice the number of carries, metres and linebreaks despite a shocking 25 handling errors which could have inflicted far more damage than the 40-14 scoreline suggests.

"I was disappointed, full-stop," added Lynn. "The performance against Ireland was not good enough and the players and staff are aware of that.

"We should have been far more competitive but you have to take your chances and you cannot concede 18 penalties against top sides.

"Most of those penalties were down to us and individuals trying to fix problems that weren't theirs to fix but resulted in putting the team under pressure.

"When we talk about learning from games, that was a massive area for us."

Wales are awaiting the result of a scan on the hamstring of Harlequins fly-half Kayleigh Powell who was a late withdrawal last week.

However, Lynn was at least relieved that his team were not forced to play two games in five days when the match - rearranged due to the funeral of Pope Francis - was pushed back to Sunday.

Larson Gets Up To Speed, Looks Ahead To Second Day At IMS

Published in Racing
Thursday, 24 April 2025 06:15

INDIANAPOLIS Kyle Larson returned to Indianapolis Motor Speedway Wednesday to take his refresher course in preparation for the May 25 Indianapolis 500 and get reacquainted with his Arrow McLaren Chevrolet Indy car.

While the sessions were delayed by communication issues at the 2.5-mile race track, Larson eventually made it on to the track and turned the 11th fastest lap of the day.

Larson qualified fifth and finished 18th, while being named rookie of the year in his debut Indianapolis 500 last year.

It was good. Good to get back behind the wheel. It doesnt seem like that long ago, and figured it would feel normal when I got back in, but it definitely took some getting accustomed to, so its honestly good to go through the ROP, Larson said. I feel like it would be hard to commit to wide open anyway the first couple laps.

Meeting with the media shortly after exiting the car for the day, Larson said he felt a difference in the car from last year.

Yeah, still just trying to get the hang of it. Definitely I feel like I havent talked to any of the teammates yet, but I feel like it feels a little different handling-wise this year, he said. I dont know if thats the hybrid stuff and the weight of that or what Im feeling, but it feels a little different, so not quite the same balance that I had last year, so just got to kind of think through that and how you want to adjust to it, if you want to get it to a point like we were last year or not.

Kyle Larson (IndyCar photo)

IndyCar mandated hybrid technology after the 500 last year, so it was Larsons first experience in a hybrid-equipped Indy car.

Hearing them describe it to me was a little bit confusing, but once I got out there and all that, it was OK, Larson said of the hybrid technology. I didnt really feel like it does much of anything to help you. It definitely helps; it doesnt hurt.

But its not like you get this massive boost down the straightaway or anything like that. I feel like whenever I would hit it, Id get like an initial kind of handful of horsepower and then it just flattens out to normal. You get kind of close and then you just kind of stall out.

Larson was looking forward to a second day in the car on Thursday.

Yeah, absolutely. I think anytime youve got a night to sleep on anything, you usually come back a little more comfortable the next day, Larson said. Im sure thatll be the same for the team, as well. We had a lot of radio communication issues on the box and a couple different engine things happening, so all stuff you probably expect the first day.

During a day in age when simulator technology is important to the preparation of drivers and teams, Larson remains old-school in his approach to racing.

Yeah, nothing really. Yeah, nothing at all. I didnt do any sim stuff, he said. They have a new steering wheel, so I got molded for that. Thats about all that Ive done Indy related.

I mean, you have so much track time here that you kind of can build into it anyway. Maybe if I got in the sim, buttons and all that would have been a little bit easier to kind of set up the way I wanted, but like I said, you have enough time here that I dont really feel like its that necessary, and then the overall like sim, car balance I think for oval staff, it doesnt relate to real life.

I think a lot of times you can just trick yourself in there. Even on the NASCAR side of things, I dont really use the sim, Larson added. Yeah, I didnt do anything. But theres going to be plenty of track time to figure it out.

Enzo Fernández: Mastantuono has future in Europe

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 24 April 2025 07:53

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández believes River Plate teenage sensation Franco Mastantuono is destined to play in Europe.

Considered among the most promising talents in Argentina, the 17-year-old attacking midfielder is a reported target of top European clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United and Chelsea.

"He's showing that he has a European future," Fernández told ESPN F 12 of Mastantuono. "You can see it."

Fernández, a youth product of River Plate, is closely following Mastantuono's progress.

Mastantuono gained promotion to River's first team in January 2024.

The Argentina under-20 player has scored three goals and set up two more in 12 appearances across all competitions for River this season.

"He's an incredible player," Fernández said. "He's doing very well and has shown great talent. In my opinion, he's a star. I wish him the best and hope he can achieve all his goals. Hopefully he can also help us in the national team."

Mastantuono, who will turn 18 in August, has a contract with River until December 2027 and has a release clause set at 45 million ($51m).

Vardy to leave Leicester: 'Our greatest-ever player'

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 24 April 2025 07:53

Jamie Vardy will leave Leicester City at the end of the season, the already-relegated Premier League club confirmed on Thursday.

Vardy, 38, has painted himself into Leicester folklore during his 13 years leading the line, scoring 198 goals in 495 appearances and playing a pivotal role in a miraculous Premier League title triumph in 2016.

The England international has also collected an FA Cup, Community Shield and two Championship titles with the Foxes, and has been hailed as their "greatest-ever player" in a club statement.

"I've been here so long that I truly never thought it would end, so this has not only been really difficult for me to write but also a really difficult decision to make," Vardy said in a video published on his social media.

"Leicester City has been my second home and my extended family and my life for 13 years. The club, the city, the people mean so much to me and my family. It's a place that has shaped the lives of our kids who have been so lucky to call Leicester home for so long. But for me the time has come to say goodbye."

Vardy's last campaign with Leicester hasn't been a memorable one, with the club's relegation already confirmed. Ruud van Nistelrooy's side sit 19th with just 18 points, and Vardy's last game for the club will be on May 18 against Ipswich Town.

He insists he is not yet calling time on his career.

"My only regret, and I'm devastated about this, is that I'm not saying farewell to you [the fans] on the back of a much better season," Vardy added. "This isn't the way I wanted my career here to finish.

"This isn't retirement. I want to keep playing and doing my enjoy most: Scoring goals. Hopefully there are a few more for Leicester between now and the end of the season and many more in the future. I might be 38 but I still have the desire and ambition to achieve so much more."

Vardy has scored just seven goals for Leicester this season, with his best campaign for the club coming in 2015-16 when he struck up a superb relationship with Riyad Mahrez on the way to a shock league title. Leicester were 5000-1 outsiders heading into the season.

"Jamie is unique," stated Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha. "He is a special player and an even more special person. He holds a place in the hearts of everyone connected to Leicester City, and he certainly has my deepest respect and affection.

"On behalf of everyone at Leicester City, I wish Jamie and his family the very best for the future and I know our supporters will join us in giving him the send-off he deserves at the end of this season."

Ward huge favorite to be No. 1 pick of NFL draft

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 24 April 2025 09:20

Miami quarterback Cam Ward is a big favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, and odds-on favorites also have emerged at picks two through five at sportsbooks around the nation.

Ward entered Thursday as a -20,000 favorite to be the top pick owned by the Tennessee Titans at ESPN BET. Colorado's Travis Hunter is the favorite (-5,000) to go second, followed by Penn State's Abdul Carter (-700) at No. 3, LSU's Will Campbell (-700) at No. 4, and Boise State's Ashton Jeanty (-230) at No. 5.

Ward opened as a 7-1 underdog to the No. 1 pick when odds were first posted in November, behind Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Hunter. Ward leapfrogged Colorado's two stars during the college football season, becoming the favorite to be the top pick in early January. His odds jumped to -1000 in late March and then to -20,000 and shorter last week. Caleb Williams, last year's top pick, also was a -20,000 favorite to go No. 1.

"Everything the Titans have hinted at over the past few months suggests that Cam Ward is their guy, and this is why we are offering -50,000 on Cam Ward to go No. 1 overall in the draft," Joey Feazel, head of football trading at Caesars Sportsbook, said.

Sanders opened as the favorite to be this year's No. 1 pick, but the over/under on his draft position dropped significantly Wednesday at sportsbooks, moving from 9.5 to 21.5.

Skepticism in the media about the New Orleans Saints taking Sanders with the ninth pick, rather than an influx of bets, drove the shift in odds, sportsbooks said. The Pittsburgh Steelers own the 21st pick. Sanders remains the favorite to be the second quarterback picked in the draft, at -200 at ESPN BET.
