Source: Younger Iamaleava to join Nico at UCLA

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 21 April 2025 20:36

Madden Iamaleava, the younger brother of Nico Iamaleava, is expected to join his brother at UCLA, a source told ESPN's Chris Low on Monday.

The younger Iamaleava, an Arkansas freshman quarterback, will make the move after deciding to enter the NCAA transfer portal, multiple sources confirmed to ESPN earlier in the evening.

Madden Iamaleava was ESPN's No. 145 overall recruit in the 2025 class and previously spent nearly eight months committed to UCLA before he flipped his pledge to the Razorbacks during the early signing period in December. To date, Iamaleava is the highest-ranked member of the 2025 ESPN 300 to enter the transfer portal during the spring window.

Iamaleava's exit from Arkansas comes one day after his older brother committed to UCLA out of the transfer portal. Nico Iamaleava landed with the Bruins on Sunday just over one week after Tennessee coach Josh Heupel announced that the Volunteers were moving forward without the former four-star prospect, who left the program after missing multiple team events earlier this month.

Madden Iamaleava was ESPN's No. 12 pocket passer in the 2025 recruiting cycle. The 6-foot-3 quarterback from Long Beach, California, initially committed to UCLA in May 2024. He remained a member of coach DeShaun Foster's inaugural signing class up to the start of the early signing period on Dec. 4 before he flipped and signed with Arkansas alongside fellow Bruins pledge and Long Beach Polytechnic High School teammate Jace Brown.

At the time, Madden Iamaleava's commitment to the Razorbacks marked a major recruiting win for Arkansas coach Sam Pittman, and the freshman passer remained with the program through the end of spring camp earlier this morning. He will enter the portal as one of the most intriguing quarterbacks transfer prospects with four years of eligibility remaining.

Madden Iamaleava did not play during his senior season after he was declared ineligible following his transfer from California's Warren High School to Long Beach Polytechnic. He led Warren to an 11-3 record in his first season as a starting quarterback as a junior in 2023.

CBS Sports/247 Sports was the first to report the news of Madden Iamaleava deciding to enter the portal.

Redick calls Lakers' practice best 'in months'

Published in Basketball
Monday, 21 April 2025 21:17

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick said Monday was the "best practice we've had in months," as L.A. prepared for Game 2 of its first-round series with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The first-year coach admitted, however, that had the Lakers approached their off days leading up to the playoffs with the same vigor, then maybe they wouldn't have appeared as flat as they did in Saturday's 117-95 Game 1 loss.

"We probably could have done a few more scrimmages," Redick said Monday.

Redick said L.A. used Sunday's film session to review the defense that allowed the Wolves to shoot 21-for-42 on 3-pointers in the series opener. On Monday, he said the Lakers "played live for a very extended period of time" to address L.A.'s offense.

"Hopefully we can just right our wrongs," Lakers guard Austin Reaves said Monday. "We played bad; they shot the ball really well. They're obviously a really good team that's physical. We got to match that. Tomorrow it'll be different story."

Reaves was limited to 16 points on 5-for-13 shooting and registered a plus-minus of minus-25 in 37 minutes.

"S---ty," Reaves said of his performance after reviewing film. "I wasn't myself. To what the reason was, don't know. But just got to go out there and be myself, play my game and have fun doing it."

Redick pointed to his team's overall lack of organization as a major contributing factor in L.A. falling down by as many as 27 points to the Wolves.

"I think a lot of times you would hear that word and then you would think, 'Oh, it's the point guard calling a play,'" Redick said. "No, it's just all of the normal stuff that we try to do, and when we do it, we're really good. Being organized is screening. Being organized is getting to the proper spacing. Being organized is getting the corners filled after makes and misses. That's being organized."

Defensively, the Lakers were particularly burned by Minnesota making 3s from the corners. The Wolves' nine corner 3-pointers were tied for their second most in a game this season (including the regular season), according to GeniusIQ. All nine of those makes came on kickout passes, which accounted for the second-most made corner 3s from kickout passes in a playoff game by any team since player tracking began in 2013-14. And those corner 3s were often wide open, as the Wolves had an average separation of 8.6 feet between their shooter and the closest L.A. defender in Game 1, per GeniusIQ.

Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith said some of it came down to lack of defensive recognition.

"Try to get guys like Naz Reid off the line," Finney-Smith said Monday after Reid scored 23 points and went 6-for-9 from deep in the opener. "He ain't gonna shoot too many pull-up 2s. He probably going to the rim or shoot a 3, so we got to get him off the line."

Finney-Smith also admitted that he allowed his personal offense -- or lack thereof -- to dictate his defense after scoring just 3 points on 1-for-5 shooting in Game 1.

"I got to be a little bit more active," he said. "Last game, I allowed not touching the ball to kind of mess with my energy, and I got to be better."

In the days since the disappointing start, L.A. has had to rationalize what happened after the Lakers were able to win so many pressure-packed games down the stretch to secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. Redick called the gap in physicality between the Lakers and Wolves an "aberration."

Reaves said L.A. simply showed "uncharacteristic issues." And analytics backed him, with the Lakers shooting just 1-for-8 off Luka Doncic passes, according to ESPN Research. Doncic's lone assist was well below his career postseason average of 7.8.

Ultimately, the Lakers will get a chance to win a game on their home court Tuesday to even the series.

"It's a wake-up call in the sense of we have to be preparing every single possession," Reaves said. Added Redick: "We just have to do a lot of things better, and it starts with playing harder and being organized."

Harrison: Didn't know fans' level of love for Luka

Published in Basketball
Monday, 21 April 2025 21:17

DALLAS -- Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison says he miscalculated the depth of love his club's fans had for Luka Doncic before the trade that sent the young superstar to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.

Despite the persistent catcalls from fans for him to be fired in the 2 months since the deal, Harrison still believes it was the right move for building a championship contender in Dallas.

"I did know that Luka was important to the fan base," Harrison said Monday during his season-ending news conference, six days after a session with a smaller group of reporters that the club called to try to move on from the exhaustively discussed Doncic trade. "I didn't quite know it to what level."

As he has said before, Harrison expected plenty of blowback from the trade but thought it would have eased sooner if Davis had been able to play with Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington and Dereck Lively II for most of the rest of the season.

Instead, those five haven't played together yet, and the star combo of Davis and Irving shared less than three quarters together before Davis injured a groin in his Dallas debut. Irving tore the ACL in his left knee while Davis was out.

"We feel that's a championship-caliber team and we would have been winning at a high level, and that would have quieted some of the outrage," Harrison said as part of the same answer about the fans' love for Doncic. "And so, unfortunately, we weren't able to do that, so it just continued to go on and on."

The Mavericks almost didn't have enough players to meet the NBA's minimum requirement for several games while Davis was sidelined. Once he returned, the Mavs steadied themselves and qualified for the final spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament at No. 10.

Dallas won at Sacramento for a shot at the eighth seed in the playoffs before losing at Memphis.

Harrison said he believes the Mavs will get a good player in the first round of the draft, where they are slated to pick 11th. He also didn't rule out changes in free agency.

But when asked what Dallas must do to become a contender again, Harrison said, "Really, we just need to get healthy. I think the team we're bringing back is a championship caliber. We fully expect to have Kyrie back with us next year when he gets healed from his injury. And we believe we'll be competing for a championship."

After Harrison said repeatedly last week that "defense wins championships" while defending the trade, Doncic was asked by ESPN his reaction to the session, saying that the GM's comments were "sad" and that he wanted to move on.

Harrison, who said last week that he still hadn't spoken to the five-time All-NBA player who led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season, was asked about that exchange and said, "I feel the same way he does. I've actually never spoken ill of Luka, and I'm just ready to move on with this team that we have."

Pistons snap record playoff skid with Game 2 win

NEW YORK -- Cade Cunningham had 33 points and 12 rebounds, Dennis Schroder made the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 55 seconds left and the Detroit Pistons snapped their NBA-record, 15-game postseason losing streak by beating the New York Knicks 100-94 on Monday night in Game 2 of their playoff series.

The Pistons, who hadn't even been to the postseason since 2019, recovered after the Knicks erased a 15-point deficit to earn their first playoff victory since Game 4 of the 2008 Eastern Conference finals against Boston. The Celtics won the final two games of that series, and the Pistons were then swept in 2009, 2016 and 2019 before dropping Game 1 at Madison Square Garden.

Now they are back in the win column, all tied in the series and will host Game 3 on Thursday night.

Schroder, who wasn't even on the Pistons until a trade in February, nailed the 3-pointer after the Knicks had used a 16-4 run to tie it at 94 on Josh Hart's dunk. He finished with 20 points off the bench.

The Pistons were in good shape to win Game 1 with an eight-point lead after three quarters, before the Knicks used a 21-0 run in the fourth to win 123-112. Detroit built another eight-point advantage after three quarters Monday and this time made the big plays after another Knicks rally.

Jalen Brunson scored 37 points for the No. 3-seeded Knicks, but Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby were each limited to 10 after both finished with 23 points in the opener.

Cunningham bounced back with a strong performance after the All-Star guard was just 8-for-21 in Game 1. The Knicks struggled to keep him out of the paint and defend him without fouling, as the Pistons shot 14 free throws to the Knicks' two while building a 55-49 lead at halftime.

The Pistons then held New York to just one basket in the first seven-plus minutes of the third quarter. Cunningham and Tobias Harris each had two baskets in an 11-0 run that Paul Reed, playing because backup center Isaiah Stewart was out with right knee inflammation, capped with a basket that gave the Pistons their largest lead at 68-53 with 5:02 remaining in the third.

Cubs add relief option, acquire Pomeranz from M's

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs acquired Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners on Monday, putting another relief option in their minor league system.

Chicago traded cash to Seattle for the 36-year-old Pomeranz, who hasn't appeared in a big league game since 2021. The team said the veteran left-hander would report to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs are on top of the NL Central with a 14-10 record, but their bullpen is off to a shaky start. They have a 5.19 bullpen ERA going into Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pomeranz signed a minor league contract with Seattle on March 27. He went 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA and two saves in nine appearances with Triple-A Tacoma.

Pomeranz has a connection to Cubs manager Craig Counsell. He had a 2.39 ERA in 25 appearances with Milwaukee in 2019 while Counsell was in the dugout with the Brewers.

Pomeranz was drafted by Cleveland with the No. 5 pick in the 2010 amateur draft out of the University of Mississippi. He broke into the majors with Colorado in 2011.

He is 48-58 with a 3.91 ERA in 289 games (140 starts) over 11 years in the majors, also playing for the Athletics, San Diego, Boston and San Francisco.

Guardians DFA former 1st-round pick McKenzie

Published in Baseball
Monday, 21 April 2025 21:31

CLEVELAND -- Guardians pitcher Triston McKenzie, who has been plagued by arm injuries since making 30 starts in his breakout 2022 season, was designated for assignment Monday.

McKenzie was moved to the bullpen in spring training, but he posted an 11.12 ERA over his first four appearances this year. The right-hander hasn't appeared in a game since he allowed four runs in one inning on April 16 at Baltimore.

A first-round pick by Cleveland in 2015, McKenzie went 3-8 with a 5.11 ERA over the past two seasons. He spent three months on the injured list in 2023 with a right shoulder strain, then missed three months last year with a right elbow sprain.

"It was really difficult to find innings for Triston, and that's what led to the decision," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "It was tough because of his history here."

McKenzie, 27, was long viewed as a potential ace by the Guardians. He went 11-11 with a 2.96 ERA and 190 strikeouts in 2022, making two starts in the postseason while becoming a fan favorite.

Cleveland has seven days to either trade or place the 6-foot-5, 185-pounder on waivers. Right-hander Zak Kent was brought up from Triple-A Columbus to fill McKenzie's roster spot before the team opened a three-game series against the New York Yankees.

"We wish Triston well, regardless of if he gets claimed or stays with us," Vogt said.

Vogt also reaffirmed his support for three-time All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase on Monday, saying, "I haven't even had the thought" of replacing him. The right-hander has allowed nine runs and 20 hits in 10 innings for a 7.84 ERA, including three in one inning Sunday in Pittsburgh when he blew his second save in six chances.

Clase, 27, won the Mariano Rivera AL Reliever of the Year Award as baseball's best reliever in 2022 and 2024, leading the league in saves in each of the last three years. He went 4-2 with 47 saves and a 0.61 ERA last season.

"He's getting hit, he's leaving the ball down the middle, and there are things he needs to work on," Vogt said. "But Emmanuel Clase is going to get the ball in the ninth inning when he's available."

Braves put P Strider on IL with hamstring strain

Published in Baseball
Monday, 21 April 2025 21:31

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Braves ace Spencer Strider strained his right hamstring Monday while playing catch and was put on the 15-day injured list.

Atlanta made the move retroactive to Friday, two days after Strider returned from elbow surgery and made his first big league appearance since April 5, 2024. Strider gave up two runs over five innings in a 3-1 loss at Toronto, and the 26-year-old right-hander was slated to make his home season debut Tuesday against St. Louis.

With Strider sidelined, the Braves will go with a bullpen game against the Cardinals. Manager Brian Snitker said they would decide on an opener on the day of the game.

Braves third baseman Austin Riley said he was hoping Strider's injury was a minor one.

"I hate it for the guy with everything that he's been through," Riley said after Monday night's 7-6 victory over St. Louis. "[With] everything that he's been through, an arm injury and being out that long, that's hard on the mental side of it, just grinding that long and finally getting back. I thought his start the other day was really good."

Strider made only two starts in 2024 before UCL internal brace surgery on April 12. Strider finished fourth in 2023 NL Cy Young Award voting and was an All-Star, going 20-5 with a 3.86 ERA and a league-best 281 strikeouts.

Atlanta recalled right-hander Michael Petersen from Triple-A Gwinnett. Petersen pitched two scoreless innings against Tampa Bay on April 13.

The Braves' rotation also is without right-hander Reynaldo Lopez, who underwent arthroscopic surgery April 8 after one start. He will be out at least three months.

Arraez to concussion IL following scary collision

Published in Baseball
Monday, 21 April 2025 21:31

DETROIT -- Luis Arraez was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list by the San Diego Padres on Monday.

The three-time batting champion got hurt Sunday night in Houston when he collided with Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon on a frightening play at first base.

Arraez was put on a backboard and carted out of the stadium. He was taken to a hospital but returned to the ballpark following San Diego's 3-2 victory.

Padres manager Mike Shildt said that Arraez was sore Monday, as expected, but that tests showed no structural damage.

"It's overall very favorable relative to how scary that looked," Shildt said. "Was able to celebrate at the very end, came in afterward with his teammates. Alert, so that was good for everybody's spirits -- mostly Luis' of course.

"Woke up, slept well. As you would expect had some stiffness in his neck, but nothing cognitively is anything that we're overly concerned about. He is going to go, rightfully so, in concussion protocol. More testing will be done. Hopefully it's more out of caution than necessity."

Arraez was headed back to San Diego on Monday. To replace him on the active roster, the Padres recalled infielder Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso before their series opener against the Detroit Tigers.

Shildt said Arraez did have a small cut on his jaw. He will undergo more testing, and it's too soon to tell when he will be able to resume baseball activities.

"But at the moment, it's kind of the best-case scenario for Luis," Shildt said. "We'll get through the testing, make sure cognitively he's OK still, has range of motion, and then we'll go from there. ... It's as good as we could possibly expect."

Arraez dragged a bunt in the first inning toward first baseman Christian Walker, who flipped the ball to Dubon covering the bag. That's where he collided with Arraez, who appeared to hit Dubon's arm or elbow with his face.

Both players fell to the ground, but Arraez took the worst of it, laying motionless in foul territory next to first base as athletic trainers and coaches from both teams came out to tend to him.

"It was scary," Dubon said. "I mean, just watching him not move. It was scary. Especially people know the type of player I am. I'm not a dirty player or anything. So it sucks. Worst part about it is you get death threats from stuff like this and everything. So it's going to be a fun ride home."

Dubon and Walker as well as Padres stars Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado stood and watched as Arraez was placed on the backboard and carted out. As he was being placed on the cart, Arraez put an arm around Shildt.

"It was a sad moment, especially getting close to him and seeing him on the ground like that, you definitely get scared," Tatis said Sunday night. "You almost go into tears, but holding up. You sit down right next to him and start praying for him right away. Happy he is back with us already. Just happy he's standing up. It's a sad part of the game, but stuff happens sometimes. Just happy he's all right."

Play resumed after a 10-minute delay.

Arraez is hitting .287 with 3 home runs, 7 RBIs and a .755 OPS. The three-time All-Star infielder has won three consecutive batting titles, one in the American League and two in the National League.

He had 203 hits in 2023 with Miami and led the NL with 200 for the Marlins and Padres combined last season.

"Guy's got the heart of a champion," Shildt said.

Raducanu happy with 'informal' coaching set-up

Published in Tennis
Monday, 21 April 2025 10:35

Emma Raducanu has paused the search for a new full-time coach, saying she is happy to "keep things informal" as her part-time partnership with Mark Petchey continues.

Raducanu brought Petchey - a well-known figure in British tennis circles and a former coach of Andy Murray - into her coaching team on a casual basis at last month's Miami Open.

Petchey was in the coaching box as the 22-year-old Briton reached the quarter-finals and produced her best tennis of the season.

After Miami, Raducanu wanted Petchey to lead the team on a more regular basis, but committing time around his television broadcasting work has been a stumbling block.

Raducanu, who is returning to competitive action this week at the Madrid Open after a month off, said Petchey will be "fitting" her around his other commitments at the WTA 1000 clay-court event.

"I'm happy with the set-up going forward right now - it's been working well," said the world number 49.

"I like him a lot and I've known him since before the US Open [victory in 2021] and it's nice to have familiar faces around."
