The NHL trade deadline for the 2024-25 season is at 3 p.m. ET Friday.

While a number of blockbusters have already happened -- including Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes and Seth Jones to the Florida Panthers -- there are some big names still reportedly available to contenders.

So, who gets traded next?

ESPN reporters Ryan S. Clark, Kristen Shilton and Greg Wyshynski devised logical trades that could happen before the deadline and benefit all teams involved, keeping salary cap implications in mind.

Let's start with a deal that could substantially shift the balance of power in the Western Conference.

San Diego FC preps plan to stop anti-gay chant

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 04 March 2025 05:17

San Diego FC intends to take steps to discourage its fans from engaging in the anti-gay that marred the Major League Soccer expansion club's inaugural home match last weekend.

The club again condemned the chant in a statement Monday, two days after San Diego's scoreless draw with St. Louis City. The second half of that home opener at Snapdragon Stadium featured three instances of the offensive chant frequently heard at Mexico national team matches.

"What took place during our first-ever home match does not reflect who we are as a club or the values we stand for," the club statement read. "The sport of football brings people together, and in San Diego, that inclusive spirit thrives. The use of homophobic language in our stadium is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. San Diego FC is built on respect and the belief that soccer is for everyone. We are committed to fostering an environment where all fans, players and staff feel safe and welcome.

"We will take immediate steps to address this behavior and will communicate a detailed plan prior to the next home match."

San Diego FC hosts Columbus on March 15.

Head coach Mikey Varas and sporting director Tyler Heaps decried the notorious chant after San Diego finished its scoreless home debut at a stadium packed with 34,506 fans celebrating the arrival of MLS' 30th team.

Varas said the fans who participated in the chant shouldn't attend San Diego FC's matches in the future.

"I just want to make very clear that it has no place here," Varas said Saturday. "If they're going to continue to come to the game and make that chant, it's better that they don't come here."

The one-word slur in Spanish is typically made by fans while the opposing goalkeeper takes a goal kick, and it regularly occurs in both club soccer and national team soccer in Mexico. It's also become a regrettable staple in the Mexican national team's matches in the U.S.

The Mexican national team has been fined repeatedly by FIFA for its fans' behavior regarding the chant, which has forced both stoppages in play and the shortening of a match between El Tri and the United States in recent years.

The chant nevertheless persists, and it seems likely to be an issue at North America's 2026 World Cup, which will feature 13 matches in Mexico.

Viní Jr excited for Neymar's potential Brazil return

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 04 March 2025 05:17

Vinícius Júnior has said he is excited about the possibility of Neymar returning to the Brazil squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina.

Brazil will name their squad on Thursday, with Neymar expected to be included.

The 33-year-old has not played for Brazil since the country's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023 when he picked up a serious knee injury that kept him sidelined for a year.

"The expectation is great because he is the idol of our generation," Vinícius said of Neymar to TNT Brasil.

He returned to boyhood club Santos in the January transfer window looking to rediscover his form after injuries limited him to only seven appearances in over 18 months at Saudi side Al Hilal.

Neymar revealed he is "getting back into my best physical shape" after scoring in Sunday's 2-0 win against Bragantino, his third goal in his last four games for Santos.

"We are very happy that he returned to Santos," Vinícius said. "That he has returned to score and that he is happy, which is always the most important thing."

Neymar came off in the 76th minute of Sunday's game with a thigh problem and had to receive treatment on the bench.

However, he later reassured fans that he is fine.

Brazil are fifth in their World Cup qualifying group, seven points adrift of leaders Argentina after 12 games.

Dorival Júnior's side have won five and lost four of their qualifying matches.

Brazil have two games coming up, against Colombia in Brasilia on March 20 and the South American 'classico' against world champions Argentina in Buenos Aires five days later.

"It could be two wonderful games because it is against Colombia and Argentina," Vinícius said.

Serie A exec planning U.S.-based season games

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 04 March 2025 05:17

Serie A is exploring plans to play regular-season matches in the U.S. within the next three years, according to the league's commercial and marketing director Michele Ciccarese.

The possibility of hosting games abroad has become more likely after New York-based company Relevent, a company run by Miami Dolphins' billionaire owner Stephen Ross, settled in their antitrust lawsuit with FIFA over the ability for leagues to host games in foreign territories. FIFA subsequently said they would reconsider their statute barring such matches, though they have yet to issue any new policies on the matter.

Relevent remain in a legal battle with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) over that ability, but given the federation had previously used FIFA policy to only allow exhibition matches to take place, it seems probable that there will be games from European leagues played in the U.S. in the near future.

"All the different leagues are discussing the possibility of playing a regular-season game [abroad]," Ciccarese said in quotes reported by The Athletic. "If you look at the NFL, they're playing in Germany, they're playing in London, they are going to play in Australia. So there are a lot of things happening that make the possibility [more real]."

Asked about a timescale for the games to take place in the U.S., Ciccarese added that several bodies would still need to approve a proposition: "I would say that it's up to us to put together the piece of the puzzle and present a proper strategy to the authorities. This is what we are doing, and who knows, maybe in a window of one to two years, we will see the league playing if the approvals come.

"For us, we need the approval of the Italian Federation, with the approval of UEFA, then it goes up to FIFA, and then it goes back to the local community."

Discussions around games taking place in the U.S. have previously focused on Spain's LaLiga, with the division's president Javier Tebas repeatedly speaking of his desire to play a regular-season game abroad. When reports emerged last October of a possible Barcelona vs. Atlético Madrid game taking place in Miami , sources told ESPN that the news "would not have come out" if both clubs did not maintain an interest in being involved -- though December 2024 proved too soon for the contest to take place in Florida.

Spain's football federation, however, has staunchly opposed proposals to play LaLiga matches abroad.

However, Ciccarese said Serie A is hoping to beat its Spanish rival to playing a competitive game in the U.S., adding that he is wary of the reaction of fanbases in Italy to games taking place outside the country.

"We would love to do it as the [Serie A] president [Ezio Simonelli has] said. We are working in order to potentially do it but there are barriers that we need to overcome with the right strategy in place and with the support of the clubs, without forgetting that players are players and they have a lot of competition, when they have to play Serie A, Coppa Italia, Champions League and play in international trophies," Ciccarese said.

"It's always a race to try to be the trendsetter because then the followers come and the trendsetter is the one who benefits more potentially in terms of revenues of making this thing happen.

"So again, it should be done in a way that makes sense for the club without forgetting the fans because you cannot play a Milan derby in America because the fans in Italy will get very upset as that game has a big meaning in Italy, so we have to play in a way that is respectful of our audience."

Man City defender Aké sidelined after foot surgery

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 04 March 2025 05:17

Manchester City have been dealt another injury blow after Nathan Aké underwent foot surgery.

The Netherlands defender was forced off at half-time of the 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Aké, who has been restricted to just 18 appearances in all competitions this season, had an operation on a long-standing foot problem on Monday and is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

In a post on social media, Aké said: "This has been such a frustrating season for me but I've now had successful surgery on a fracture in my foot which has been bothering me for months and I'm looking positively to the future."

City are not yet putting a timescale on Aké's return.

Pep Guardiola's team have 11 more league games plus an FA Cup quarterfinal against Bournemouth.

Their season will be extended with their participation in the FIFA's Club World Cup, which kicks off in the U.S. in June.

Aké's absence will be a concern for Guardiola, who has already lost John Stones to injury.

The England defender could be out for as long as 10 weeks with a muscle problem picked up during the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

Manuel Akanji is also injured leaving Rúben Dias as Guardiola's only fit senior centre-back.

January signings Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis are set to play a key role between now and the end of the season while Josko Gvardiol, usually deployed as a left-back by Guardiola, can also fill in.

City's early Champions League exit means they have a free week before returning to action against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday.

United's Obi ineligible for Europa League games

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 04 March 2025 05:17

Striker Chido Obi will miss Manchester United's game against Real Sociedad because he's ineligible to play in the UEFA Europa League.

The 17-year-old impressed after coming on as a substitute during United's FA Cup defeat to Fulham on Sunday.

It was just his third senior appearance after moving from Arsenal in October.

His performance against Fulham prompted questions to head coach Ruben Amorim about whether he is close to making his first start in place of under-fire forward Rasmus Højlund, who hasn't scored since December.

However, Chido Obi won't be able to face Real Sociedad in the Europa League round-of-16 first leg on Thursday because he is ineligible to play in the competition.

United added January signings Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven to their Europa League squad ahead of the knockout rounds, which begin with the trip to Spain this week.

Chido Obi was overlooked, a source has told ESPN, because he was not considered a first-team player at the time.

A number of injuries to senior players, including Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo, have seen the teenager fast-tracked into Amorim's squad.

Chido Obi does not qualify for a place on the B list -- usually reserved for young players -- because, in line with UEFA's rules, players must have been at the club for a minimum of two years.

Being without the Denmark youth international is another blow for Amorim, who only named seven substitutes against Fulham instead of the permitted nine.

United are already sweating on the fitness of Harry Maguire after he had to be substituted against Fulham with a muscle problem.

The England defender is due to undergo a scan on Monday to assess the severity of the problem.

Samarawickrama hits 66* before first ODI is washed out

Published in Cricket
Monday, 03 March 2025 23:03

No result - Sri Lanka 147 for 5 (Samarawickrama 66*, Illing 2-42) vs New Zealand

Harshitha Samarawickrama scored an unbeaten 66 and appeared to steady Sri Lanka's effort in Napier before incessant rain forced a washout in the first ODI after 36.4 overs of action with the visitors at 147 for 5.

Asked to bat by Suzie Bates, Sri Lanka slid from 70 for 1 to 94 for 4, but the game had nearly evened up courtesy Samarawickrama's second fifty-plus score in ODIs. The rain, though, meant no further play, and after a three-hour break, the umpires called off the contest.

Chamari Athapaththu was the first batter dismissed, for a 21-ball 9, with seamer Bree Illing striking with the new ball. Samarawickrama and Vishmi Gunaratne, the other opener, then added 45 for the second wicket.

Jess Kerr ended the stand when Gunaratne edged one behind to Polly Inglis in the 19th over, following which No. 4 Kavisha Dilhari and No. 5 Manudi Nanayakkara fell to Bates and Illing respectively.

A promising partnership of 44 for the fifth wicket ended when Eden Carson ran Nilakshika Silva out for 17. Samarawickrama, with her seven fours, held one end up amid the dismissals and reached her fifty in 83 balls. She had wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani (2*) for company when rain arrived.

The teams now move to Nelson for the next two games in the series.

Shami vs Connolly: A different kind of six and out

Published in Cricket
Tuesday, 04 March 2025 02:57

2.1 Shami to Connolly: wide outside off, Connolly drives over the top of it...142kph

2.2 Shami to Connolly: plays and misses again! Connolly looking to drive, beaten on the inside edge this time as it angles back

2.3 Shami to Connolly: 1 wide 140kph, short and wide, Connolly slashes and misses with a square cut but gets the wide call

2.3 Shami to Connolly: four in a row! Connolly struggling. This one was nicely bowled, fuller outside off, feet not going anywhere as he pokes at it

2.4 Shami to Connolly: make that five! Aims for a square drive on the up, slides past the edge

2.5 Shami to Connolly: beaten again, six out of six...drives over the top of it as he targets square through the off side

2.6 Shami to Connolly: OUT has he edged it this time?! India are very convinced. Wide outside off, Connolly playing a square drive, was it an under edge? Yes, it's taken the toe end. They are just checking the ball has carried to KL Rahul. It's clean

Australia had chosen to bat after winning the toss in the first semi-final against India. They made two changes to their XI, bringing in Connolly and legspinner Tanveer Sangha for Short and fast bowler Spencer Johnson. India named the same XI that won their last group game against New Zealand, fielding a four-spinner attack.

Big picture: Run fest awaits SA, NZ

Here we are again. South Africa and New Zealand, arguably the two best sides to have never won a World Cup, meet in a knockout match. Both have had their hands on this trophy all the way back when it was called the ICC Knockout and possibly meant something else in terms of its significance in the global game. So make no mistake: winning this will not take away the desire for the big one but it will help to tide things over until 2027, when South Africa co-host the event with neighbours Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Quietly, South Africa know they are actually building for that but the pressure to return home with something other than disappointment is ever-present. This is another chance to change that. New Zealand, after coming so close to the trophy at the 2019 World Cup, also carry scars but somehow seem less burdened by them. Perhaps a smaller population, with fewer socio-economic fractures that can be plastered over with sporting success helps them; maybe they're just good at stoicism. Those are things to ponder later in the week when one of these two teams will play a final against a yet-to-be-decided opposition at a yet-to-be-decided venue. For now, they've both probably got the knockout they wanted.

Facing each other, rather than India or Australia, appears to give them both a better chance of progressing to the final. And doing it in Pakistan, though both teams travelled from Dubai at different times on Monday, likely suits them more. Conditions are good for run-scoring and both have line-ups capable of posting big scores which suggests fans will be in for a run-fest. Their attacks are similarly matched to the point where both were hit by injury-enforced absences amongst the quicks. Some of the more interesting narratives could be around which of the tall men - Marco Jansen and Kyle Jamieson - can extract the most with their height or which of the attacking bowlers, Kagiso Rabada or Matt Henry, has the most success.

A difference could come in the spin resources, where South Africa have chosen to operate with only one specialist in Keshav Maharaj but New Zealand have both captain Mitchell Santner and offspinner Michael Bracewell in their best XI. Maharaj had previously indicated he sees a spinners role as a more defensive one at this event so their economy rates are the numbers to watch here.

Overall, this match promises an even contest without the hype that comes with playing a big three nation even though there is plenty of history. New Zealand dumped South Africa out of both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups and though the likes of us will talk about it, it's worth remembering that the last of those was ten years ago and much cricket has been played since.

Then, particularly for South Africa, the results seemed seismic. Now, ICC events happen annually and teams are dusting themselves off and starting again with much greater frequency. Does that mean it matters less if you lose at a crucial stage or even if you win? Ask one of these two, who have both spent the best part of the last three decades trying to win a major trophy and they're likely to say no. Only one of them will have the chance to do it this time.

Form guide

South Africa: WWLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first) New Zealand: LWWWW

In the spotlight: David Miller and Kane Williamson

No one has quite said it yet but could this be the last time 35-year-old David Miller plays in an ODI tournament for South Africa? And if so, what kind of say will he have on it? He has limited opportunity in the tournament so far. He came to bat in the 43rd over against Afghanistan only to smash the winning runs against England, but has had almost-decisive knocks in both South Africa's previous white-ball knockout games. At the 2023 ODI World Cup, Miller's century gave South Africa something to defend in the semi-final after they were reduced to 24 for 4; at the 2024 T20 World Cup, he was looking good on 21 off 17 balls before being spectacularly caught on the boundary which could have taken South Africa within touching distance of the trophy. Miller has shown he enjoys the big occasion and has also indicated he is taking things year by year, so chances to play in knockouts are likely becoming fewer. After all his efforts, he will want to play a role in South Africa winning one.
Kane Williamson has back-to-back ODI centuries against South Africa, albeit they were scored six years apart. He made 106* against them in Birmingham in June 2019 and 133* against them at this venue in the tri-series that preceded this tournament, though that was not against a full-strength South African side. Overall, Williamson averages 57.35 against South Africa, his best against any opposition other than Zimbabwe. Though New Zealand have a line-up of creative and crafty hitters, Williamson's role in New Zealand's side continues to be of utmost importance as evidenced by his 81 against India in Dubai, where he kept New Zealand in the fight in what was ultimately a losing cause.

Like many of the more experienced players at this event, at 34, Williamson may not get another opportunity to win an ODI trophy and will want to make the most of this one.

Team news

Openers Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi have both recovered from the illness that kept them out of the England game and are expected to be available for selection but there may be no room for de Zorzi unless Aiden Markram is unavailable. Markram hurt his hamstring while in the field against England and will undergo a fitness test at training on Tuesday evening while George Linde has been called up as a travelling reserve. The bowling make-up - two allrounders, one specialist spinner and two quicks - is expected to be unchanged.

South Africa (possible): 1 Temba Bavuma (capt), 2 Ryan Rickelton, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 David Miller, 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Lungi Ngidi

New Zealand's only question will be which one of Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway or Daryl Mitchell they will leave out. Conway sat out the India match for Mitchell, who played against Pakistan but not Bangladesh. Young and Ravindra both have centuries to their names at this competition which suggests the decision is between Mitchell and Conway, who has scores of 30 and 10 from his outings in the tournament.

New Zealand: 1 Will Young, 2 Rachin Ravindra/Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Daryl Mitchell, 5 Tom Latham (wk), 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Michael Bracewell, 8 Mitchell Santner (capt), 9 Matt Henry, 10 Kyle Jamieson, 11 Will O'Rourke

Pitch and conditions

In five ODIs this year, the average first innings score is 316.5 and results have been shared between the team batting first and the chasing team. It's expected to be another belter for the batters and tough outing for bowlers. While Heinrich Klaasen mentioned some drizzle on South Africa's arrival in the city on Monday, the forecast is mild and clear for the semi-final.

Stats and trivia

  • South Africa and New Zealand have played no bilateral white-ball cricket against each other since 2017 but played each other at the 2019 and 2023 World Cups and won a game a piece and the Pakistan tri-nation series, in a match which New Zealand won. In ICC tournaments, they have met 11 times, and New Zealand have won seven of those games.
  • South Africa are the only country to have qualified for the knockouts of all of the last seven ICC events - across men's, women's and Under-19 tournaments. That includes the 2023 men's ODI World Cup semi-final, the 2024 men's T20 World Cup final, the 2025 World Test Championship final, the 2024 men's Under-19 World Cup semi-final, the 2024 women's T20 World Cup final and the 2025 women's Under-19 final.

Quotes

"Scheduling is an issue all around but when you do have time to rest and recover, you should. One day cricket can be quite exhausting on the body, and for us, it might be about making sure bowlers are ready for tomorrow. I don't think they're going to be doing much today in training."New Zealand travelled back to Pakistan from Dubai early on Monday morning and will use Tuesday to recuperate rather than train heavily according to captain Mitchell Santner.
