Tigers place P Brebbia on IL with triceps strain

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 19 April 2025 11:34

The Detroit Tigers placed right-hander John Brebbia on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right triceps strain and recalled left-hander Bailey Horn from Triple-A Toledo.

The move comes one day after the Tigers placed right-handed reliever Beau Brieske (ankle) on the IL.

Brebbia, 34, was 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in eight relief appearances this season. Over eight major league seasons with five different clubs, he is 16-21 with a 3.73 ERA in 362 appearances (21 starts).

Horn, 27, has just 18 major league appearances, all in relief with the Boston Red Sox last season, when he went 1-1 with a 6.50 ERA.

Last October, the San Diego Padres came within one game of knocking the Los Angeles Dodgers out of the playoffs early -- one game. San Diego manager Mike Shildt thinks of that division series race often, but not with regret, or bitterness, or frustration; he is not fixated on crossroad moments in the losses in the final two games of the best-of-five series.

What is embedded in Shildt's memory, he recalled in a conversation earlier this week, is how the Padres players responded in Game 2, when fans pitched garbage at them at Dodger Stadium. They supported each other, Shildt said; they lifted one another, with third baseman Manny Machado gathering the players in the dugout to address the chaos. "In a huge moment, a riotous atmosphere, our group got even closer together," Shildt said, "and we played even better."

In that moment and throughout the series, the Padres demonstrated they can thrive in the biggest moments on the biggest stage, and after Los Angeles went on to win the World Series, manager Dave Roberts and some Dodger players acknowledged that San Diego was the best team they faced in the playoffs. This year, the Padres are back and better than ever, and Machado and others have credited that near-miss of last October for helping launch the Padres into this season with an even greater confidence and more swag. On the backs of baseball's best bullpen and the best version of Fernando Tatis Jr. that we've ever seen, the Padres have started 15-4, allowing only 51 runs, dominating despite an early wave of injuries that sidelined center fielder Jackson Merrill and second baseman Jake Cronenworth.

"It speaks to the depth," Shildt told reporters after the series win earlier this week against the Chicago Cubs. "It speaks to the mentality of the team. It's never going to be a straight line. ... It's how you handle the deviations."

"It's just the whole group approach," Tatis said. "Everybody feeds off each other."

This will be a must, apparently, in the NL West, the division that the Padres GM A.J. Preller noted is like the SEC of the big leagues this year; the NL West's fourth-place team, the Diamondbacks, went into the weekend tied for baseball's fourth-best record.

After the series loss to the Dodgers, Preller said, the conversations were forward-thinking. "We focused on -- 'now go and get better,'" he said. "We weren't good enough. And this was the message from Shildt in spring training: 'How do we get better?'"

For Tatis, this meant moving to the leadoff spot, where his speed and power could immediately impact opponents, while affecting simplifying changes in his stance and his approach. Before this season, Tatis averaged about 2 strikeouts for every walk; in 2021, when he finished third in the MVP race, he compiled 153 strikeouts and 62 walks. So far this year, that ratio has dramatically shifted: He has nine strikeouts and 10 free passes, including a bases-loaded walk drawn against the Cubs in a key moment Wednesday.

With the Padres leading 3-2 in the eighth inning and the count full, Tatis started to swing at a sweeping breaking ball from Luke Little -- but under control, Tatis checked his swing as the ball swerved out of the strike zone. Tatis flipped the bat nonchalantly as he started to walk toward first, the crowd around him roaring for the insurance run.

There are hitters who simply don't have the ability to recognize pitches that will end up out of the zone, Preller said, but Tatis can -- and he has made the decision to be more patient at the plate, to be more discerning. "He is so talented -- he can do anything," Preller said.

"He is such a talent, and this guy is exceptionally smart," Shildt said. "He has an ability to evolve and see the game ... He is learning how to channel his aggression." Tatis' early-season on-base percentage of .425 is nearly 60 points higher than his career high. When pitches are thrown in the zone to him, his contact rate is 79.9%, a best-ever for him, and he's doing damage, with six homers and 16 runs.

The question of how to help the Padres get better was a little more complicated for Preller, working within the context of organizational change. Sheel Seidler, the widow of the late San Diego owner Peter Seidler, filed a lawsuit against Seidler's brothers, Matthew and Robert, with possible control of the team at stake. Preller is typically among the most proactive general managers in baseball, but amid the fight at the ownership level, the Padres did very little early in the offseason.

Preller weighed interest in starting pitchers Dylan Cease and Michael King, as well as closer Robert Suarez and first baseman, as he weighed alternatives in how to best use his allotted resources. The Padres' payroll had been $291.2 million in 2023, then cut to $227.8 million in 2024, and choices had to be made for 2025. The Padres signed Nick Pivetta to a backloaded contract that pays the right-hander $1 million in salary this year, plus around a $3 million signing bonus. And Preller inked infielders Gavin Sheets ($1.6 million) and Jose Iglesias ($3 million), as well as outfielders Jason Heyward and Connor Joe for barely above the minimum salary.

Those financial choices with the rotation and the position-player group enabled Preller to mostly keep the team's bullpen intact from last year, other than the departure of free agent Tanner Scott.

"The Dodgers have a bullpen full of closers," one rival evaluator said. "But the Padres' bullpen might be better." That is empirically accurate so far this season. The Padres' relievers have combined for a 1.52 ERA, allowing only 41 hits in 71 innings.

Preller remembers what Kyle Higashioka, a catcher with the Padres last October, had said about the San Diego-L.A. Division Series -- whoever wins that series, Higashioka had predicted, would win the World Series. "This is the best team I've been on," Higashioka told his GM.

There are a lot of players in the Padres' clubhouse with a lot of winning in their respective careers who felt the same way, Preller believed. The early-season results this year suggest San Diego is a great team again, aiming to get back to where they were last October, and beyond.

Thiel Disqualified, Borden Is Attica Sprint Winner

Published in Racing
Saturday, 19 April 2025 03:56

ATTICA, Ohio  Scotty Thiel led all 30 laps of the 410 A-main at Attica Raceway Park Friday. Unfortunately, a post-race inspection showed he had a two-inch wicker bill on his top wing which is against the tracks rules.

Devon Borden, who had passed Thiel right before a caution flew with two laps to go, negating the lead pass, was declared the winner, his first ever at Attica on Baumann Auto Group/7L Construction/Venture Visionary  Partners/Smith Paving Night.

Borden, who started on pole of the Callies Performance Products 410 Sprint A-main  in his Bryan Grove Racing No. 45, dropped back to fourth early in the feature. He charged back into third on lap 12 behind Thiel and 12th starter Cap Henry.

As Henry and Borden chased down Thiel in lapped traffic with three laps to go, hard contact between Borden and Henry put Borden in second and he charged to Thiels outside exciting turn two just before the caution flew with two laps to go.

After Thiel was disqualified at the feature at the scaled, Borden was awarded the win over Henry, 17th starter Kalib Henry, Bryce Lucius and 16th starter Craig Mintz.

Borden, who transplanted to Pennsylvania from the state of Washington a couple of years ago, was ecstatic about his win.

I dont care how we won but we will take it. My guys have worked so hard on this thing. I cant thank Bryan Grove enough for the opportunity. We were pretty goodI had Scotty there before that yellow. I  tried to move around on the restart and it hurt us. It feels do good to finally be on the horse track at Attica, said Borden.

It was the opening night of the All Pro Aluminum Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by the Baumann Auto Group and with his runner-up finish defending AFCS champion Cap Henry will vault into the early season lead.

Rusty Schlenk made it three wins in a row to open the season at Attica in the Dirt Nerds Podcast Powered by Propane UMP Late Models.

Todd Brennan led the first lap with JR Gentry taking over the top spot a lap later. Third starting Schlenk took the lead on lap six and only a couple of  back-to-back cautions on laps seven and eight kept the field close.

The race went the final 17 laps caution-free and Schlenk, a three-time national UMP champion, built up a nearly five second lead late in the race and cruised to his 46th career win at Attica over defending track champion Kyle Moore, Gentry, Devin Shiels and Brennan.

Kasey Ziebold led the first five laps of the Fremont Fence 305 Sprints A-main before Tyler Shullick took over. Sixth starter Jamie Miller, the defending track champion, drove under Shullick for the top spot on lap 10.

Shullick stayed close to Miller but Millers car was just too good in lapped traffic as he took his third straight feature win at Attica, the 48th of his career at the track. A wild battle for second on the last lap had Shullick get by Blayne Keckler with 15th starter Matt Foos and Dustin Stroup rounding out the top five.

The finish:

MALTA, N.Y. On a night celebrating Albany-Saratoga Speedways diamond anniversary, L.J. Lombardo created his own memorable moment.

After losing the lead on the opening lap, the Danbury, Conn., driver thundered past Alex Yankowski on Lap 32 and held on to win Fridays 60th Anniversary Celebration his second Super DIRTcar Series victory.

Lombardo, the SRI Performance and Stock Car Steel Pole Award winner, led the field to the green in the 60-lap feature. However, that was short-lived. Before he could complete Lap 1, Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals champion Alex Yankowski powered around Lombardo on the outside to take the lead.

As Yankowski pulled away, it wasnt long before Lombardo was in a battle with Tim Sears Jr. and Mike Mahaney. The three drivers traded positions throughout the first 15 laps until Yankowski caught the tail of the field.

Thats when Lombardo closed a full-straightaway lead to three car lengths, looking for the right moment to pass Kid Rocket.

But as Lombardo tried going around Neil Stratton, a lap car, the two made contact in Turns 3 and 4, sending Stratton around to bring out the races only yellow flag. That Lap 30 caution was also the opportunity Lombardo needed to win the race.

When the Feature resumed, Yankowski chose the inside line, giving Lombardo the top. Lombardo fell back by three car lengths on the restart and was three-wide with Mahaney and Sears as they raced into Turn 1. But thats when he found momentum, powering past both drivers to re-take second.

Then, Lombardo set his sights on Yankowski again, pulling even with him through Turns 3 and 4 on Lap 31. Yankowski barely led the lap by a bumper, and by the time they exited Turn 2 on Lap 32, Lombardos momentum carried his No. 35 past Yankowski and into the lead.

When he got that large lead, I thought our race was done, Lombardo said. When I caught him before the caution, I started to reel him in, and I was like, maybe I have a shot at this. When he chose the bottom, I knew I had one shot at beating the top down because I knew if he saw my nose, he wouldve slid up going into three and blocked me.

From there, Lombardo stayed consistent on the outside lane through the final 28 laps, holding off Yankowski to score a victory worth $7,500.

I have such a great group of guys that build these cars, Lombardo said. It goes to show the amount of effort we put into the car. I beat the shit out of this thing on the top, and for it not to break goes to show a lot. I blew the mud cover off, I dented the whole door in. Easiest way to put it is I beat the death out of it.

Yankowski crossed the line behind Lombardo, earning his second consecutive runner-up finish.

Once the caution came out on lap 30, Yankowski said one of the factors that kept him out of victory lane was not knowing which lane to pick.

I feel like in the first 30 laps, we were really good, and in the last 30 laps, we were not so good, Yankowski said. It was pretty slippery through the middle, and I just goofed up. I let him get some energy on the top there, but it was hard to do anything after that. We werent really better. When you get a guy that rips the top like that and knows the place well, its tough.

Tim Sears Jr. crossed the line third, earning his second consecutive podium finish at Albany-Saratoga.

I restarted fourth, and I was fortunate enough to be in the right lane at the right time, Sears said. We were definitely there. Ive always been good on the smaller and shorter tracks, so these are kind of in my wheelhouse.

Mahaney crossed the line fourth, and Erick Rudolph beat Williamson to the checkered flag by a bumper to finish fifth.

Chris Jakubiak topped a 55-car field to win the sportsman modified feature.

The finish:

Feature (60 Laps): 1. 35L-LJ Lombardo[1]; 2. 66-Alex Yankowski[2]; 3. 83X-Tim Sears Jr[3]; 4. 35-Mike Mahaney[5]; 5. 25-Erick Rudolph[12]; 6. 88-Mat Williamson[4]; 7. 9S-Matt Sheppard[10]; 8. 3D-Matt Delorenzo[9]; 9. 4-Anthony Perrego[20]; 10. 15X-Justin Stone[11]; 11. 3J-Marc Johnson[6]; 12. 19-Tim Fuller[13]; 13. 91-Felix Roy[16]; 14. 98H-Jimmy Phelps[15]; 15. 2-Jack Lehner[14]; 16. 70A-Alex Payne[17]; 17. 28-Michael Trautschold[25]; 18. 2RJ-Ronnie Johnson[19]; 19. 12-Darren Smith[22]; 20. 08-Jack Speshock[24]; 21. 21M-Bob Mcgannon[8]; 22. 99L-Larry Wight[26]; 23. Macri Doubles Down For $13,600 At The Grove

Saturday, 19 April 2025 04:03

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. Anthony Macri swept both 410 sprint car races at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, taking home just shy of $13,600 for his night of work.

The wins were the 11th and 12th of his career at the oval, coming in the make-up season opener held over from April 4 and in the regularly scheduled Tommy Hinnershitz Classic.

Macri set fast time on the night with a lap of 16.555 seconds before starting on the pole of the 30-lap Hinnershitz race.

He would end up wiring the field for the victory in a race that was marred by a lap-three red flag for Cale Thomas aboard the Bobby Allen No. 1a.

Thomas was working around Lance Dewease for the fifth spot on the backstretch when he clouted the outside wall, sending his car careening out of control underneath the bridge before digging in and turning over.

Flames erupted from the car as it twisted to a stop only to find seventh runner Danny Dietrich jump from his car and rush to Thomas aid.

Dietrich was able to pull Thomas from the car and away from the wreckage with both drivers avoiding injury.

The restart had Brock Zearfoss lining up second but Macri motored away when action resumed and by lap seven he had built up a 1.2 second lead.

Macri entered the rear of the field with 14 laps to go and worked perfectly to the finish to pick up the win by 5.843 seconds over Zearfoss.

Fourth-starter Ryan Smith surged late to drive by Freddie Rahmer for third and challenge Zearfoss to the line for the runner-up position.

Rahmer settled for fourth followed by Dietrich.

Macri scored $8,088 for his win in the Tommy Classic.

In the make-up opening night feature that restarted with five laps completed, Macri was trailing early leader Matt Campbell when the green flag unfurled.

He quickly ducked under Campbell in the first turn only to see Campbell turn his car down off of the cushion and race to his inside on the backstretch and reclaim control.

And after that Campbell drove a smart race, keeping Macri from within striking distance while entering the rear of the field on the 16th tour.

In fact, Campbell appeared home free as the final five laps began to play out but fortunes changed when Cameron Smith stopped with four laps to go, bunching the field.

The caution flag wiped out a near one second lead that Campbell had over the field and the new green seemed to breath new life into Macri.

The challenger stuck with the leader on lap 22 and then was close enough to plaster a deep dive for the lead on Campbell in the third corner with two laps to go.

And once in front, Macri jetted away to the win by 1.455 seconds.

Dietrich rode home third followed by Zearfoss and Dietz.

Jasen Geesaman took the win in the 15-lap street stock feature to close the night.

The finishes:

Tommy Classic (30 laps): 1. Anthony Macri, 2. Brock Zearfoss, 3. Ryan Smith, 4. Freddie Rahmer, 5. Danny Dietrich, 6. Lance Dewease, 7. Chase Dietz, 8. Troy Wagman Jr., 9. Justin Whittall, 10. Ex-Croatia midfielder dies in car crash aged 39

Former Croatia midfielder Nikola Pokrivac died in a car crash in Karlovac in central Croatia on Friday, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) said. He was 39.

Local media reported that the collision, which involved four vehicles, also killed one other person from a different car. Pokrivac was in a vehicle with three teammates from fourth-tier club NK Vojnic, who are injured, two of them critically.

Former Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Pokrivac played for Croatia from 2008 to 2010, earning 15 caps. He also played for Ligue 1 side AS Monaco and Austrian club RB Salzburg.

"It is impossible to find words of comfort in such a shocking and unimaginably sad moment when we have lost a young life," the HNS said in a statement.

"I can only express my deepest condolences to Nikola's family and loved ones for this irreparable loss, and the HNS and the Croatian football family will be with them in these most difficult moments," HNS President Marijan Kustic added.

Ito, leading 2-1, let slip of a 7-3 lead in the fourth game, foregoing an opportunity to go 3-1 up in the fixture. This ultimately proved too costly in the end, as she lost the match despite being the better player overall.

Man did well to withstand Itos barrage of flat hits from both flanks, finding ways to keep herself alive in points. Man showed incredible character as well, clawing back into games she had no business winning. This was Mans second consecutive victory against Ito, having also beaten her at the 2025 ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup.

With this win, Man books a maiden final appearance at the World Cup, where she will await the winner of compatriots Sun Yingsha and Chen Xingtong.

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is deeply saddened by the passing of Hans Wilhelm Gäb on 13 April 2025, at the age of 89. A towering figure in German sport and a transformative leader in table tennis, Gäb leaves behind a lasting legacy of excellence, innovation, and integrity.

Born in Düsseldorf, Gäb discovered his passion for table tennis at the age of 13. A gifted athlete, he went on to become a multiple German national champion and represented his country at the highest level, embodying both the fighting spirit of an individual competitor and the camaraderie of a team player.

Gäb began his career in sports administration within regional table tennis circles before taking on the role of President of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) from 1981 to 1994. During his tenure, he laid the groundwork for the sports professionalisation in Germany and played a pivotal role in nurturing the rise of future stars such as Jörg Roßkopf and Timo Boll. From 1994 onwards, he continued to support the DTTB as Honorary President.

Gäbs motto left a mark on generations of players. He was a forward-thinking reformer who modernised both the organisational structures and visual presentation of the sport. At the ITTF World Championships Dortmund 1989, he introduced red flooring for the first time and implemented a bold, television-optimised tournament design. His efforts were rewarded when Germanys young underdogs, Steffen Fetzner and Jörg Roßkopf, captured the publics imagination with an unforgettable performance, ushering in a new era for table tennis.

Beyond his work in Germany, Gäb also served as President of the European Table Tennis Union and was Chef de Mission of the all-German Olympic team at the 1992 Barcelona Games. His exceptional contributions to sport were recognised with numerous accolades, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Golden Sports Pyramid, the Laureus Media Award, and his induction into the Hall of Fame of German Sport in 2020.

In parallel with his sporting leadership, Hans Wilhelm Gäb built an illustrious career in journalism and the automotive industry. A former newspaper journalist, he co-founded the magazine Auto Zeitung in 1968 and later transitioned into corporate communications. He made history as the first Head of Communications on the Board of Directors at Ford, later joining Opels Board of Management and becoming Vice President of General Motors Europe. He was instrumental in forging high-profile sponsorships with sporting icons such as Steffi Graf, Franziska van Almsick, and clubs like FC Bayern and AC Milan, helping reshape Opels brand image across Europe.

Hans Wilhelm Gäb will be remembered not only for his immense contributions to sport, but also for his elegance, generosity, and wisdom. His influence on table tennis and the broader sports landscape is profound and enduring.

The ITTF extends its sincere condolences to Mr Gäbs family, friends, and all connected to him through the sport.

Mavs proud as 'tumultuous' year ends in play-in

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 19 April 2025 00:32

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Anthony Davis limped to the Dallas Mavericks' bench during a timeout with 5:22 remaining Friday night and put a towel over his head.

Davis, nursing a calf that was sore after being kneed by Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey earlier in the fourth quarter, finally called off the fight. He was done for the night. And the Mavericks were done for the season.

"I just wanted to leave everything out on the floor, no matter what," Davis said after the Mavericks were eliminated with a 120-106 loss to the Grizzlies in the Western Conference's final play-in game, which Dallas trailed by 25 points in the first half.

Davis' 40 points, his most in a Mavericks uniform, weren't enough to give Dallas a chance to extend a season that teammate Klay Thompson succinctly described as "tumultuous."

After advancing to the NBA Finals a year ago, Dallas' season was turned upside down with general manager Nico Harrison's shocking decision to trade face-of-the-franchise Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that brought Davis to Dallas. The rest of the Mavs' season was ravaged by injuries, especially a strained left adductor suffered by Davis in his Dallas debut that sidelined him for six weeks and the torn ACL that ended All-Star guard Kyrie Irving's season in early March.

"I think we persevered," said Thompson, who scored 18 points in the season-ending loss. "We were down to eight, nine guys at one point and we held up the fort and got into the play-in and gave ourselves a shot to get to the playoffs.

"It sucks. It really sucks, but I'm really proud of every man in this locker room. We showed up to work every day. We try to do the right thing every day."

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd called the Mavericks' 39-43 campaign, which earned them the West's 10-seed and final play-in berth, an "incredible season."

"When you look at the injuries that we've had [and] the change, for us to even be here playing in this game tonight, it's incredible," Kidd said. "It just shows the character of that group in that locker room, the fight, being prepared, moving on, learning from our losses and also our wins. So an incredible season with the change and injuries. Some would say we shouldn't even be here, so give those guys in that locker room a lot of credit."

The Dallas fan base's outrage about trading Doncic, a five-time first-team All-NBA selection who has yet to hit his prime, loomed over the Mavericks like a black cloud for the past 2 months. There were frequent chants calling for the firing of Harrison at Mavs home games, especially during Doncic's 45-point performance when he led the Lakers to a win in his emotional return to Dallas on April 9.

"Obviously, it's a lot of emotions that I know is not directed toward me," Davis said. "The city loved [Doncic]. You get rid of the guy, new guy comes in. While they want to embrace you and are thankful for you, it still stings. So I'm just thankful and appreciative of the city of Dallas and their fans to welcome me and my teammates coming in to a situation."

Davis added: "Obviously, it was a tough situation, but I tried to do as much as I can to go out and just when I was on the floor to compete and try to help us win games."

Davis returned for the final three months of the season despite some in the organization suggesting he shut it down due to Dallas' hopes of contending taking a hit with Kyrie Irving's injury, which will prevent the star guard from playing for a significant stretch to begin next season.

"I just wanted to, if I was able to play, come back and play," Davis said. "I think the fans deserved it, my teammates deserved it, organization deserved it for myself to come out and just do whatever I can to get back on the floor to try to compete at the highest level and try to obviously get further than what we did this season."

Thompson, a four-time champion during his 13-year stint with the Golden State Warriors, opted to sign with the Mavericks over a more lucrative offer from the Lakers last summer because he believed Dallas presented his best opportunity to win another title. He also wanted to play with Doncic, a brilliant playmaker that Thompson expected would create a lot of wide-open 3-point looks for him.

With the Mavericks' season ending far short of their goal, Thompson declined to give a straight answer when asked if he would have made a different decision in free agency if he knew what would ensue.

"Don't do this to me. Don't do that to me. Don't do that," Thompson said, dropping his head and shaking it, letting out a pained laugh. "That's kind of a ridiculous question. I don't own a time machine, and I don't believe in going back, looking back. If I did that my whole career, I would not be where I'm at and I wouldn't have been able to persevere through two really hard injuries.

"So I'm here in Dallas, and I enjoyed my time and I'm looking forward to the future."
