Hall Banks $10,000 Carteret County Payday

PELETIER, N.C. – It took just shy of five hours to complete the rain-delayed Solid Rock Carriers 150 at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway on Sunday, but after two lengthy delays, Connor Hall hoisted the trophy and the $10,000 check in the attrition-filled race.

Hall, 22, took the lead on the opening lap of the race, passing Chris Burns with a power move on the outside, and dominated for much of the race – only surrendering the lead for three laps shortly after the halfway break.

After the race, his second $10,000 victory in the past month and his third Carteret County Speedway win, Hall was ecstatic about his triumph but also relieved the arduous race, which spanned for 4 hours and 57 minutes in length, had finally reached its conclusion.

“I’m just glad it’s over,” Hall said in victory lane.  “I would like to think the Hampton Heat was the longest race of my life, but I’ve never had one where we had to fix the track and do a rain delay in the same race.  As much as I wanted them to just call it and make it easy on me, I’m glad we stuck it out and I’m glad Carteret County stuck it out.  I’ll give them credit.  They got it done.  They did a good job.”

Hall won the Hampton Heat 200 at Langley Speedway in July – a grueling race which was held amid excessive heat.  Once again, in Sunday’s Solid Rock Carriers 150, Hall was able to hit his marks during the daytime and in primetime.

“I drove far from a perfect race,” Hall stated.  “My guy [Tim] Allensworth, I missed a shift on a restart and we had been sitting from that patch.  I guess I just got kind of out of the rhythm.  Luckily, we weren’t wrecked.  I’ve got to thank Tyler Horne for peddling it.  We did run a good race.  We stuck through it, and it was fun.  The breaks didn’t do anything to my car because Carteret realized we did need to reset air pressures.  I thank them for letting that happen.  The night definitely helped this car.  As soon as the sun went down and saw some colder weather coming, I knew it was going to be game on.”

Allensworth, who went on to finish second, appeared poised to mount a serious challenge to Hall on a lap 104 restart.  Allensworth was able to draw even with Hall’s dominant car and was in the preferred line, but his challenge was cut short when Chris Burns and Stacy Puryear tangled for the second time behind the leaders on the race’s 106th lap.

A couple of laps, and over an hour, prior to the lap 106 incident, Burns had spun off Puryear’s front bumper.  In the following incident, it was Puryear who went around after exchanging some contact with Burns.  After getting his car re-fired, as the field was still under caution, Puryear and Burns tangled, resulting in heavy damage to both cars and both cars being parked for the remainder of the race.

Puryear was unavailable for comment after the race and Burns declined to comment, other than to congratulate Hall on his victory.

The 150-lap Limited Late Model spectacle was marred by weather all weekend.  First, the race was postponed from its original Saturday date.  Then, after the field had completed 26 laps and was under caution when Brandon Head blew a motor, the sky opened, prompting a 107-minute delay.

The second delay, which lasted for over 80 minutes, came on lap 103 when part of the track surface came apart, prompting a sinkhole to form.  Safety crews were able to successfully patch the surface and conclude the race.

Allensworth went on to finish second to Hall – a result he was both disappointed and content with.

“Second’s always the first loser,” Allensworth commented.  “We were hoping to get one more spot but Connor ran a great race.  We got in so much trouble.  I think we passed the most cars here today.  We went to the back twice and came back through.

Brandon Clements finished in third while Tyler Horne and T.J. Barron rounded out the top-five.

Zach Miller picked up his third Legends win at Carteret County this year, passing Jason Alder early in the 35-lap race and pulling away.  His Miller Performance Motorsports teammate Caleb Heady finished in the runner-up spot while Alder came home third.  Jordan Lamothe and Jaiden Reyna rounded out the top-five.

Travis Miller picked up his second consecutive Battlefield Tire Pros Mini Stock feature win, this time holding back a challenge from Stephen Sanders.  Chase Singletary won the Mini Cup feature race while Morgan Odum held off younger sister Carmen to win in the Jr. Mini Cup race.

Gasly Out, Albon In At Red Bull

Published in Racing
Monday, 12 August 2019 06:00

MILTON KEYNES, England – Aston Martin Red Bull Racing will race with a new driver line-up following the annual Formula One World Championship summer break.

Alexander Albon is being promoted to Aston Martin Red Bull Racing to drive alongside Max Verstappen, while Pierre Gasly will return to the Red Bull sister team, Scuderia Toro Rosso.

The pair will debut in their new rides during next month’s Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

“Red Bull are in the unique position of having four talented Formula One drivers under contract, who can be rotated between Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso. The team will use the next nine races to evaluate Alex’s performance, in order to make an informed decision as to who will drive alongside Max in 2020,” said Red Bull officials in a team statement. “Everyone at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing looks forward to welcoming Alex to the team and supporting him during the next phase of his F-1 career.”

Gasly has struggled during his first season with the Red Bull primary team, failing to reach the podium in 12 races this year, while teammate Max Verstappen has two wins and a pole during that same span.

Meanwhile, Albon has shone in his debut season in F-1, with the Englishman already having earned points in four races – including a career-best sixth-place result during last month’s German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring.

This is the second time Red Bull has demoted one of their primary drivers in recent history. They made the same move with Daniil Kvyat in 2016, making way for Verstappen’s F-1 debut. Verstappen went on to win his Red Bull debut, during the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.

Panthers to retire Luongo's number in March

Monday, 12 August 2019 07:42

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Roberto Luongo's No. 1 jersey will be retired by the Florida Panthers on March 7.

The Panthers announced the ceremony date for their now-retired goaltender on Monday. Fittingly, the opponent will be the Montreal Canadiens -- Luongo's hometown team.

Luongo will become the first Panthers player to have his number retired. The Panthers previously retired 93 for the team's first president, Bill Torrey. That number commemorates the franchise's inaugural game in 1993.

Luongo retired in June after 19 NHL seasons, most of them with Florida. His 489 career victories are third in NHL history behind Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy.

Team owner Vincent Viola calls Luongo "a cornerstone of Panthers history and an icon of the game."

Report: Day splits with caddie Williams after two months

Published in Golf
Sunday, 11 August 2019 23:49

The short-lived union of Jason Day and renowned caddie Steve Williams appears to be over.

Day and Williams joined forces ahead of the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach two months ago, but according to an AAP report the two men parted ways in the wake of Day's missed cut at The Northern Trust following rounds of 72-70.

"Parting with Steve was a mutual decision and not an easy one to make," Day said in the report. "He is the ultimate pro; it was a real learning experience being exposed to a caddie who has achieved what Steve has. He has worked with the best. But it was a disconnect of old school and new school."

Williams was on the bag for 13 of Tiger Woods' 15 major titles, and he also helped Adam Scott to victory at the 2013 Masters. He last caddied full-time for Scott in 2017, but he ended his latest stint of retirement to join forces with another Aussie and former world No. 1.

Day told reporters at Pebble Beach he believed he had "severely underachieved" in his career to date and expressed hope that a long-term relationship with Williams would be part of the solution moving forward.

"He said that being No. 1, there's a lot of sacrifice that comes along with that. And we both understand what that means," Day said in June. "So I'm very excited about this week and the potential of many years to come."

But Williams' time with Day was much less fruitful than his six-year stint with Scott, as Day missed the cut in two of six starts with Williams on the bag and recorded just a single top-20 finish (T-8 at the Travelers Championship). After starting the year ranked 14th in the world, Day is now down to 22nd – his lowest ranking since June 2013.

Day has had multiple caddies since splitting with former looper and current swing coach, Col Swatton, nearly two years ago, and he'll reportedly have friend David Lutterus on the bag this week at the BMW Championship in Chicago. It's a pivotal event for Day, who has fallen to ninth place in the International Presidents Cup standings entering the final week of qualification with only the top eight automatically earning spots on Ernie Els' squad at Royal Melbourne later this year.

Day also dropped from 40th to 50th in the FedExCup race following his early exit at Liberty National, meaning he'll need a strong result at Medinah to move into the top 30 and avoid missing the season-ending Tour Championship for the first time since 2012.

Pettersen headlines European Solheim Cup captain's picks

Published in Golf
Monday, 12 August 2019 02:05

Norway’s Suzann Pettersen is back in the Solheim Cup ranks as a player.

She was the boldest choice among the four captain’s picks Europe’s Catriona Matthew announced in a news conference Monday at Gleneagles in Scotland. Pettersen was already one of Matthew’s vice captains but will now step down from that role.

Matthew also announced France’s Celine Boutier and England’s Bronte Law and Jodi Ewart Shadoff as captain’s picks.

Pettersen is one of the most accomplished winners in the European Tour ranks today and among the most decorated Solheim Cup players in the biennial event’s history, but she took 20 months off around the birth of her child and has made just two starts since her return to the LPGA this summer. She missed the cut teaming with Matthew at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational team event last month and also missed the cut last week at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open, her only individual stroke-play start since her return.

Pettersen, 38, is a 15-time LPGA winner with two major championships on her resume. She’s the heart and soul of the modern European Solheim effort, leading Europe’s resurgence while also being at the center of one of its most notable controversies.

With a 16-11-6 record, Pettersen has won 19 Solheim Cup points in her career, trailing only Laura Davies (25) and Annika Sorenstam (24) for most in team history. Matthew was at the center of a controversy in Germany at the 2015 Solheim Cup, when Alison Lee lost the Americans a hole for picking up her ball when it wasn’t actually conceded in a four-ball match. It created a firestorm within the American ranks over Pettersen holding Lee accountable in the confusion.

Matthew on Monday also introduced the eight players who qualified for her team.

Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, the Netherlands’ Anne van Dam second and Sweden’s Caroline Hedwall made the team off the Ladies European Tour’s European Solheim Cup points list. England’s Charley Hull and Georgia Hall, Spain’s Azahara Munoz, Germany’s Caroline Masson and Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist made it off the Rolex Women’s World Rankings list.

Lampard hits back at Mourinho selection criticism

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 11 August 2019 16:31

MANCHESTER, England -- Frank Lampard has hit back at Jose Mourinho's criticism of his team selection against Manchester United by insisting that he doesn't care what pundits say.

Mourinho, working for Sky Sports, said Lampard could have picked a team with more "know how" instead of selecting youngsters Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham for the 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

But Lampard rejected his former manager's claim by insisting more experienced players like N'Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud and Willian were not available to start.

"I can't drag people out of the medical room, whether they're experienced or not," said Lampard after his first competitive game as Chelsea boss.

"The players we played today, and on the bench, are the players we have. We were clearly the better team for 45 or even 60 minutes but we made individual errors that led to four goals from five shots. That's the harsh reality.

"I don't have to be too concerned about what anyone else says -- the pundits -- but what is clear is the squad is the squad we've got and I believe in it.

"Had we gone in at half-time 2-1 or 3-1 up, which we should have done, the game would have been completely different."

Lampard's team hit the post twice during an impressive first-half display but went in at the break a goal down thanks to Marcus Rashford's 18th-minute penalty.

United were clinical after the break and scored three times in 16 minutes through Rashford, Anthony Martial and Dan James prompting Mourinho, who also said Man City's "B Team" could beat United, to suggest that Chelsea had been hurt by a lack of experience.

"My feeling is that today they had a possibility to play with more know-how," Mourinho said. "[Marcos] Alonso was on the bench, Kante was on the bench, Giroud was on the bench, and to come to Old Trafford, even if this is not the huge Manchester United that used to scare people, it's Manchester United.

"It's the first match at home, the first match of the season, people are excited, the stadium is on fire waiting for something positive.

"A little bit of experience [from Chelsea] would fit well with the team. You look to the performance of Mason Mount, the performance of Tammy Abraham, you look to the performance even of [Andreas] Christensen and for matches of this dimension you need a little bit more."

Lampard admitted that the match had been a "reality check" for his young team, but refused to make excuses over missing international stars as the reason for the result.

"We are missing internationals and big players but I don't want that excuse," said Lampard.

"The team we put out today was clearly competing in the game for long periods but we made four mistakes and they were clinical in the way they put them away. There's a reality check for us all."

Abraham and Emerson struck the frame of the goal before half-time and Chelsea played some attractive football until United's powerful counter-attacking play exposed the away side's defensive weaknesses.

"They are a counter-attacking team, it's a big strength, they have pace and if you turn over the ball or give them opportunities they will counter," said Lampard.

"For massive parts of the game we didn't allow them to do that. We were the ones winning the ball back, but our final ball wasn't great. We were so comfortable in the first half, so loads of lessons for us.

"We can't make unforced errors and mistakes at this level. At the same time, it was nowhere near a 4-0."

Lampard was reluctant to dwell on the positives for his team but was justified in his view that the scoreline did not reflect his team's performance with the ball.

"Four mistakes for the goals, but we controlled major parts of the first half. We hit the woodwork, poor decisions in the final third when we should be able to get shots away, we should be in the lead at half-time," he said.

"Early in the second half I didn't mind it -- and then two mistakes for their second and third goals -- it's much easier for them to play at 3-0 up. At 1-0, we were the better team, but I can't stand here and look happy with that."

Sources: Real Madrid players tempting Neymar

Published in Soccer
Monday, 12 August 2019 07:08

Real Madrid players have been talking to Neymar to persuade the Paris Saint-Germain star to join them at the Bernabeu, sources have told ESPN FC.

PSG sporting director Leonardo has confirmed that his club would sell the Brazil forward for the right price this summer, and officials at both Madrid and Barcelona are trying to negotiate a deal.

- When does the 2019-20 La Liga season start?

Meanwhile, anti-Neymar banners were flown during the Ligue 1 champions' 3-0 win over Nimes at the weekend, demonstrating some fans' lack of patience with the player.

A return to Barca appeared to be Neymar's most likely move earlier in the summer, but Madrid are increasingly confident they can take advantage of a strained relationship between the Barca and PSG hierarchies, following the 27-year-old's controversial switch to Paris two summers ago.

Barca defender Gerard Pique last week called on his former teammate to publicly speak out and push through his "complicated" return to the Camp Nou, with the Blaugrana board unable to match PSG's asking price and hoping to make a player-swap deal instead.

It is also unlikely Madrid can match the world record €222 million fee paid by PSG two years ago, having been unable to find the £180m that Manchester United wanted for Paul Pogba before the Premier League transfer window shut last week.

Sources say that Madrid are now "going hard" to try and sign Neymar before Spain's summer market closes on Sept. 2, and squad members have also been calling Neymar directly to tell him that he would be welcome at the Bernabeu.

Neymar is a long-time target of Madrid president Florentino Perez, who has tried on numerous occasions to sign the highly marketable star, both before and after he joined Barca from Santos back in 2013.

Zinedine Zidane would like to move on highly paid Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez before the window shuts, but Madrid have yet to receive sufficient bids for either player.

After Madrid's final preseason game at Roma on Sunday, Zidane was asked if he would like Neymar in his team next season. He said: "We are here with the team we have, the players we have.

"We just think about that. Next week our league begins and our minds are just thinking about Saturday."

MLS Power Rankings: LAFC vanquish another challenger

Published in Soccer
Monday, 12 August 2019 06:59

The MLS secondary transfer window slammed shut last Wednesday, ending a brief and intense barrage of moves as clubs worked to solidify their rosters for the stretch run of the season. The Galaxy finally got their man, Cristian Pavon, LAFC added a young star in Brian Fernandez, and a handful of teams feverishly worked the trade market in a bid to get better.

What does it all mean? It's too early to tell. The impact the new players will have is yet to be seen, though there are several clubs expected to shake up their XIs with playoffs (and playoff seeding) on the line.

The best remain the best. LAFC didn't play a perfect defensive game against the Red Bulls but the attack is so good it didn't matter. With his goal in the win, Carlos Vela remained on pace to break the MLS single-season goal-scoring record.

Next MLS match: August 17 at Chicago, stream live on ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET

A keeper gaffe and... whatever you call what Jack Elliot did... helped the Union to a second consecutive win against Houston Dynamo. This was an important one, since it kept Philadelphia atop the Eastern Conference in front of hard-charging Atlanta United. Gotta win those home games.

3. Atlanta United (13-3-9)

Previous ranking: 5

Next MLS match: August 18 at Portland, 10 p.m. ET

Josef Martinez's adductor seems to be fine in the win over New York City. The same can't be said for his hair, which seems to be a strange chrome color now. Maybe it's a message about the defending champions hunting silverware? Atlanta has to be considered an MLS Cup contender and they'll play for the Open Cup title later this month.

4. San Jose Earthquakes (11-5-8)

Previous ranking: 2

Next MLS match: August 17 at Sporting KC, stream live on ESPN+ at 8:30 p.m. ET

You can't lose to Colorado and not slip in the rankings. Again, the Quakes lost a game not because they played poorly, but because they didn't finish their chances. Matias Almeyda's effort-heavy system was always going to be pushed to its limits in the altitude of Commerce City.

5. Minnesota United (11-5-8)

Next MLS match: August 14 vs. Colorado, stream live on ESPN+ at 8 p.m. ET

Just in case we all forgot that Minnesota United played (and won) a massive Open Cup semifinal in midweek and didn't put everything they had into a trip to FC Dallas, the team's game recap press release made sure to remind us: HEAVILY ROTATED MNUFC FALLS 5-3 TO DALLAS. In case you missed it, the Loons were HEAVILY ROTATED.

6. New England Revolution (9-7-9)

Previous ranking: 7

Next MLS match: August 17 at Red Bulls, stream live on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET

The Revs played a wild game full of twists and turns and VAR and penalty kicks and goalmouth scrambles against the Sounders and left Seattle with a single point. Disappointed or not, the Revs showed that they have the quality and the fight to be very dangerous when October comes around.

7. New York City FC (10-8-5)

Previous ranking: 6

Next MLS match: August 17 at FC Cincinnati, stream live on ESPN+ at 7:30 p.m. ET

Dome Torrent's team didn't rise to the moment in Atlanta and the NYCFC coach said as much after the game. "What is the reason you play different against Atlanta? You have to be brave in Atlanta. If you want to play here you have to be brave. If you are scared here, forget about it. Stay in New York. You have to play."

8. Portland Timbers (10-4-9)

Previous ranking: 10

Next MLS match: August 14 vs. Chicago, stream live on ESPN+ at 11 p.m. ET

The Timbers put a lesser team in the Whitecaps to the sword at home, something that hasn't come easily to them since Providence Park reopened. That's a good first step on the way -- they hope -- to making all their upcoming home games count towards a playoff spot.

9. Seattle Sounders (11-6-7)

Previous ranking: 8

Next MLS match: August 14 at Real Salt Lake, stream live on ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET

The Sounders moved into second place in the West with a point against New England, but that won't make the sting of points dropped at home hurt any less. The way those points got dropped -- via a penalty kick given because the ball jumped up and hit Jordy Delem's hand -- was excruciating.

10. New York Red Bulls (11-4-11)

Previous ranking: 9

Next MLS match: August 17 vs. New England, stream live on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. ET

The Red Bulls gave it a shot out in LA, but the quality of LAFC was too much for the visitors to handle at Banc of California Stadium. Glimpses of the vintage (read: Jesse Marsch) era Red Bulls emerged in the loss, but it could only delay the inevitable.

In normal circumstances, the focus would be on RSL's win against Sporting Kansas City and what it might mean for the playoff push. With news that the club fired Mike Petke on Sunday night, the circumstances have changed dramatically. Freddy Juarez, this is your squad now.

13. LA Galaxy (12-1-11)

Previous ranking: 11

Next MLS match: August 14 vs. FC Dallas, stream live on ESPN+ at 10.30 p.m. ET

That's not the way it was supposed to go for the Galaxy on the road in DC. United didn't have Wayne Rooney and benched Luciano Acosta and still managed to do a smash-and-grab job on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Co. Cristian Pavon's debut was a mixed bag on bad turf.

14. Orlando City (8-6-11)

Previous ranking: 14

Next MLS match: August 14 vs. Sporting KC, stream live on ESPN+ at 7:30 p.m. ET

One point in Toronto is better than no points, especially coming off of the emotional loss to Atlanta midweek in the Open Cup semis. A throwback to the "Benny Ball" of yore earned the Black and Red a 2-1 win over the Galaxy at Audi Field on Sunday. 18. Colorado Rapids (7-5-12)

Just when it looked like the Rapids' ascension under Conor Casey was crashing back to earth, Colorado goes back-to-back with wins over playoff-contending teams. Saturday's victory over San Jose probably doesn't do much for their playoff chances, but it renews the recent good feelings.

Next MLS match: August 17 v. NYCFC, stream live on ESPN+ at 7:30 p.m. ET

Saturday was big for FC Cincinnati: It was head coach coach Ron Jans' debut, representing a new start to life in MLS for FCC. It was the first game against their built-in, in-state rival Columbus and the chance to claim Ohio MLS supremacy. In that light, the 2-2 draw was disappointing and encouraging all at once.
