Brock Zearfoss Goes Flag To Flag

Published in Racing
Monday, 15 July 2019 03:41

WEST LEBANON, N.Y. — Brock Zearfoss led Sunday night’s Ollie’s Bargain Center All Star Circuit of Champions feature flag to flag on a night that saw the high banks of the half-mile Lebanon Valley Speedway littered with trashed sprint cars.

Davey Franek was a distant second in the finale of the New York swing, with Danny Dietrich, Gerald McIntyre and Corey Eliason rounding out the top five.

“It’s never easy,” offered Zearfoss. “But we were quick tonight. It was just one of those deals where everything comes together for you.”

Zearfoss blasted off from the pole on the initial break and had a comfortable lead when the first yellow, on lap three, brought him back to the field.  The turn one melee left Tony Stewart and Paul McMahan needing repairs before returning and fast-timer Lucas Wolfe with a trashed race car after hitting the turn-one wall a ton and flipping down to the infield.

With order restored, Zearfoss once again flew away from his pursuers as Justin Peck and Dietrich swapped fourth position back and forth behind him.  By lap five he had a full turn lead over Franek, point leader Aaron Reutzel and Justin Peck and by lap 12 he’d run down the backmarkers.

But Zearfoss lost his advantage once again on lap 16, as Reutzal had a run on Franek into turns three and four with Peck trying to follow him when the trio ran out of room. Peck went around while Reutzal blasted the wall before flipping hard at the top of the frontstretch to draw another red flag.

“I didn’t miss that mess by much,” said Dietrich.  “I dove low and hit the berm trying to get away.  Something is bent, because the car was never right after that!”

Franek escaped to remain runner up for the restart, with Dietrich advancing to third. Zearfoss was long gone again once the green returned, with the remainder of the field settling into single file behind him. They ran that way to the finish, with Stewart, Justin Barger, Greg Wilson, McMahon and Dale Blaney comprising the second five.

Franek, among the best in the 360 division in the Northeast, was happy but not overjoyed by his runner-up finish, saying, “Second is tough. You always want to win. But this is only my second or third start with the 410’s, so we’ll take it. This place is so fast that it’s really tough to pass, but overall we were really good.”

Blaney’s finishing position was notable in that he’d caught the turn two wall in hot laps, nearly ripping the rear end out of his McGhee Motorsports car and necessitating the use of his backup car. His crew rapidly installed an engine, swapped Blaney’s seat and various other parts onto the spare and he was ready for his heat.

The first heat was also tough on race cars, as Wolfe jumped the cushion on the start and hit the turn one wall, necessitating both a new front axle and a new rear end. Then, midway in the qualifier, Skyler Gee took a hard flip in turn four, trashing his ride in the process.

Zearfoss, Dietrich and Franek shared heat wins as the 19-car field qualified, with Zearfoss adding to a near perfect night with a convincing score in the dash.

The finish:

Feature (25 Laps): 1. 70-Brock Zearfoss [1]; 2. 28F-Davey Franek [2]; 3. 48-Danny Dietrich [5]; 4. O7-Gerard McIntyre [10]; 5. 26-Cory Eliason [11]; 6. 14-Tony Stewart [7]; 7. 5-Justin Barger [9]; 8. W20-Greg Wilson [12]; 9. 13-Paul McMahan [3]; 10. 11-Dale Blaney [13]; 11. 90-Jordan Givler [15]; 12. 40-George Hobaugh [8]; 13. 87-Aaron Reutzel [4]; 14. 70X-Justin Peck [6]; 15. IO7-Mark Coldren [17]; 16. 91-Scott Holcomb [18]; 17. 55-Darren Schott [19]; 18. 5W-Lucas Wolfe [16]; 19. 87jb-Jim Bob [20]; 20. 99-Skylar Gee [14] Lap Leaders: Brock Zearfoss [1-25]

Davenport Rules Diamond Nationals

Published in Racing
Monday, 15 July 2019 03:50

WHEATLAND, Mo. — Jonathan Davenport picked up his second CMH Diamond Nationals Presented by Super Clean on Sunday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.

It was not easy for the defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion as he had to hold off a hard-charging Mike Marlar to pick up the $15,000 victory. Davenport’s only other win in the annual July event was in 2015.

Marlar managed to pass Davenport for the lead as the two came out of turn two on lap 52 but a caution for Tyler Erb negated the pass for the top spot. Davenport opened up a couple of car lengths advantage over Marlar on the restart. Marlar closed the gap in the final two laps, but came up just short at the finish line.

Shanon Buckingham started alongside Marlar in row number five and went on for another impressive run for the second night in a row as he captured the third finishing position. Tim McCreadie, who led the first ten laps of the race, finished in fourth followed by Billy Moyer.

Davenport and McCreadie started on the front row. McCreadie got the jump on Davenport and took the early lead. Davenport passed McCreadie for the lead on lap 11 and held a comfortable lead for a large portion of the race as McCreadie held the second spot.

As the checkers grew closer, Marlar started to make his move by taking the second spot away from McCreadie on lap 45. Marlar then tracked down Davenport but lost all momentum, after clearing Davenport just before the caution for Erb came out. Davenport led the last seven laps to record his ninth series win of 2019.

“The track started to clean up at the end we were trying to move around,” said the 35-year-old Georgia native. “We were trying to find a line that would work. My line kept going away at the top, so I moved back to the bottom. I guess that caution saved us. Mike [Marlar] has been really good here lately. He has been really consistent. We finally got some speed back in this thing.”

“We would have had the pass of the night,” said Marlar. “I am not going to whine about it. I got paid to drive a race car tonight so things aren’t so bad. I really enjoy coming out here. It is such an awesome facility. It is always a great crowd here. There’s a lot of electricity in the air. We had an awesome weekend.”

Buckingham, who is one of 11 drivers to win an LOLMDS race this season, had his best ever finish at Lucas Oil Speedway.

“This place is super nice,” Buckingham said. “How could you not like this place? For whatever reason this track just fits my driving style. My crew worked themselves to death to get us a podium finish here tonight. Those cautions killed me, if we could have had the last 19 laps all green, I think we would have been up there challenging for the win.”

The finish:

Jonathan Davenport, Mike Marlar, Shannon Buckingham, Tim McCreadie, Billy Moyer, Josh Richards, Scott Bloomquist, Shannon Scott, Will Vaught, Devin Moran, Shannon Babb, Earl Pearson Jr., Rick Eckert, Hudson O’Neal, Kaeden Cornell, R.C. Whitwell, Jimmy Owens, Billy Moyer Jr., Austin Siebert, Logan Martin, Tyler Erb, Mitch McGrath, Payton Looney, Tony Jackson Jr., Kyle Bronson, Terry Phillips, Michael Norris, Austin Rettig

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – Tiger Woods will begin his quest for a fourth claret jug alongside a familiar face and one of Europe’s rising stars.

Woods, who has not played since the U.S. Open, will be grouped for the first two rounds at Royal Portrush with Patrick Reed and Matt Wallace. Reed and Woods paired together unsuccessfully at last year’s Ryder Cup, while Wallace won three times on the European Tour in 2018 and finished T-3 at the PGA Championship this May. The trio will play at 10:10 a.m. ET Thursday and 5:09 a.m. ET Friday.

Defending champ Francesco Molinari won his first major last year at Carnoustie, and he’ll be joined this week by Bryson DeChambeau and Adam Scott. DeChambeau was a runner-up at the 3M Open in his most recent start. Scott let a four-shot lead slip away at Royal Lytham in 2012 to highlight a series of close calls in this event. They’ll go off at 4:58 a.m. ET Thursday and 9:59 a.m. Friday.

All eyes will be on Rory McIlroy this week as he returns to his native country and the course where he fired a record-setting 61 at age 16. McIlroy will play the first two rounds with Gary Woodland and Paul Casey, as Woodland makes his first major start since winning the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. McIlroy finished T-34 at last week’s Scottish Open, while Casey tied for fifth at the Travelers Championship in his most recent start. They’ll tee off at 5:09 a.m. ET Thursday and 10:10 a.m. ET Friday.

Having lost 15 pounds in the last 10 days as part of a fast, a slimmed-down Phil Mickelson will begin his quest for a second Open title in a marquee grouping with Ireland’s Shane Lowry and South African Branden Grace. Mickelson has largely struggled since his win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, while Lowry was a runner-up last month at the RBC Canadian Open, and Grace enters off a string of three straight missed cuts. They’ll play at 2:52 a.m. ET Thursday and 7:53 a.m. ET Friday.

The honor of hitting the first tee shot of the tournament will go to Ulsterman and Portrush resident Darren Clarke, who won The Open in 2011. Clarke will be first on the tee at 1:35 a.m. ET Thursday, playing alongside Charley Hoffman and Amateur champion James Sugrue.

The full list of tee times for Rounds 1 and 2 appears below:

  1. The 148th Open Championship is set to begin later this week, where the best in the world will tee it up at Royal Portrush to try to claim the last major title of the year. Below are the full-field tee times for the first two rounds in Northern Ireland:

Arsenal fans unite to demand Kroenke changes

Published in Soccer
Monday, 15 July 2019 05:11

Stan Kroenke has been criticised by Arsenal supporters' groups in a letter that labels the American billionaire "passive" and "absent" and using the club as an "investment vehicle."

A two-page letter, signed by several major supporters' groups and bloggers, claims that "Arsenal is at a crossroads. Things need to change" as well as describing Emirates Stadium as a "soulless place" on matchdays.

- Premier League fixtures 2019-20 in full
- Who has qualified for Europe from the Premier League?
- When does the transfer window close?

It reads: "As Arsenal fans we have watched with frustration as the team's football performances have declined over the past decade. When Stan Kroenke began buying Arsenal shares the club had just competed in a first Champions League final. Twelve years on Arsenal are about to play in the Europa League for the third year running.

"Off the pitch fans have never felt more marginalised, less listened to or valued. This was sadly illustrated when Stan Kroenke forcibly bought out the last remaining supporter-shareholders without even a word of appreciation for their custodianship role in the club.

"It feels as though Arsenal is at a crossroads. Things need to change. What all of us as signatories to this statement want to see is meaningful action by Stan Kroenke to reinvigorate our football club."

Kroenke first invested in Arsenal in 2007 and went on to become majority shareholder in 2011.

Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2004 and the 2019-20 season will be their third in a row without Champions League football.

Their only signing so far this summer is Brazilian teenager Gabriel Martinelli, while Aaron Ramsey has left for Juventus and captain Laurent Koscielny is on strike.

The letter continues: "Arsenal have invested money in recent years but their approach to both buying players and paying wages looks uncoordinated and appears to lack strategy.

"There has also been a lot of turnover in the senior football personnel. A strong board would be proactively managing this.

"On a matchday the Emirates Stadium can be a soulless place. The atmosphere is poor and there are thousands of empty seats blighting almost every game.

"If Arsenal really cared they would make sure seats weren't left empty by investing in an improved ticketing system and actively supporting initiatives like safe standing. The club uses the strapline 'Always ahead of the game'. It would be good to see action to demonstrate this."

It also urges Arsenal to make public their position on proposals of a European Super League that they say is "driven by greed."

Solskjaer: Man United need new midfield leader

Published in Soccer
Monday, 15 July 2019 05:11

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he needs a player like Bryan Robson in his team as he looks to strengthen his midfield ahead of next season.

Solskjaer is looking for at least one new midfielder this summer after Marouane Fellaini's January move to Shandong Luneng and Ander Herrera's departure on a free to Paris Saint-Germain.

- Premier League fixtures 2019-20 in full
- Who has qualified for Europe from the Premier League?
- When does the transfer window close?

And the Norwegian has said Robson, a dynamic midfielder known for his leadership qualities as captain of both United and England, is the type of player he is looking for.

"We are on the way to building a new squad," Solskjaer said, speaking at a fan event alongside Robson in Perth. "We've got new staff in, coaching staff.

"I believe so much in this club and this project. To be manager of this club is fantastic. I never had the honour of playing with Robbo but we need a player like him in the team."

Solskjaer may have even more work to do on his midfield if Paul Pogba gets his way and engineers an exit before the transfer deadline.

Negotiations are continuing with Leicester for defender Harry Maguire and there is still interest in Sean Longstaff and Bruno Fernandes but the United boss said he is running out of time with less than a month left of the window.

He has started to put his own stamp on the squad with the arrivals of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and despite still looking for more additions, he is confident he is taking the club back in the right direction.

"I'm following some great managers," Solskjaer said. "Sir Alex was the best and I'm trying to take the best from him and put my own personality on the job.

"We've got such a big fanbase and such a history that I feel that it is a fantastic opportunity for me. We're waiting for the young ones to come through because we've got so many exciting players and I'm sure we'll see the best of them in the years to come.

"There are some experienced ones as well that still have a few years left in them. We can back to the level we were, definitely.

"I come in at 7 a.m. thinking I'm the first one and Michael [Carrick] and Kieran [McKenna] are already there planning the sessions. I know this club is going places because of the people we have here."

United continue their preseason preparations with a game against Leeds United in Perth on Wednesday.

Leeds have left a number of players at home and arrived in Perth with just a 16-man squad. Manager Marcelo Biesla is not due to arrive in Australia until Tuesday and has left open the possibility of returning home immediately afterwards while his players continue on to Sydney to play the Western Sydney Warriors on Saturday.

It means the Argentinian could spend as little as 36 hours in the country either side of two 17-hour flights.

The game against United will also see former Valencia teammates Pablo Hernandez and Juan Mata go head-to-head before Solskjaer's team move on to Singapore to play Inter Milan.

"When I arrived here, I text him and he text me: 'See you Wednesday'," Hernandez said. "He told me he wants my shirt and I want his shirt, I have a lot of his shirts but I want the new one.

"He was my teammate for four years in Valencia and my roommate and I am happy to play against him."

Sources: 49ers reach deal with kicker Gould

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 15 July 2019 05:56

Beating Monday's 4 p.m. ET deadline for franchised players to sign long-term extensions this year, the San Francisco 49ers and kicker Robbie Gould reached agreement on a two-year, $10.5 million fully-guaranteed deal that, including an option clause, can turn into a four-year, $19 million deal that includes $15 million guaranteed, league sources tell ESPN.

It is likely to be the only deal done before the deadline, per sources. The other two players facing a deadline are Houston linebacker Jadeveon Clowney and Atlanta defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. Clowney will not get a deal done before the deadline, per sources, and it will be difficult for Jarrett to get one as well.

Gould's deal, which his agent Brian Mackler and 49ers executive Paraag Marathe have been working on for months, reached a breakthrough over the weekend. At the start of the weekend, both sides thought it would be challenging to get it done, but the two sides reached a compromise on Sunday, by installing an option clause that gave each side comfort.

The 49ers have an option in which they can pick up the remaining two years on Gould's contract by the 17th week of the 2020 season, per source. To do that, the 49ers would have to fully guarantee Gould $2.25 million at that time, and then another $2.25 million on April 1, 2021.

The deal includes a $3 million signing bonus and a $3.15 million fully-guaranteed base salary this season, then a fully-guaranteed $4.35 million base salary in 2020, per a source. If the option is picked up, the deal would include a $4.5 million base salary in 2021 and a $4 million base salary in 2022.

But the 49ers have assured themselves of having their 36-year-old franchise kicker under contract for at least the next two seasons, and up to four seasons.

Back in April, the sides were at such an impasse that Gould requested a trade. The team said then it wouldn't honor Gould's request.

San Francisco put the franchise tag on Gould in February, a designation that came with an offer of a one-year deal for around $5 million.

That tag came after months of negotiations that did not result in a deal, and Gould told ESPN he was discouraged by the Niners' interest in kicker Stephen Gostkowski, who ultimately re-signed with the New England Patriots.

An inability to come to terms on a long-term contract combined with Gould's desire to return closer to his Chicago home prompted him to shut down any further contract talks and to formally request a trade via his agent, Brian Mackler.

Gould had been living in a hotel near the Niners' team facility in Santa Clara the past two years while his wife and family remained in Chicago during the season.

In two seasons with the 49ers, Gould has been one of the league's best kickers. Gould, 36, has made 72 of 75 field goal attempts since signing with San Francisco and led the league in field goal percentage (97.1) last season.

Information from ESPN's Nick Wagoner was used in this report.

The latest MLB trade rumors and buzz we're hearing

Today's trade chatter

Left-handed bullpen help is Cubs' deadline priority: The Chicago Cubs have been upfront with their need for a left-handed reliever as they continue to scour the market. Ironically, they have one to offer up, as Mike Montgomery's name has been involved in trade talks. He fits the bill for a long man or starter; his current team needs a lockdown one-inning guy. The Cubs are also interested in a bat, potentially for the top of the order. They have a catching surplus in the minors -- and two solid catchers in the majors -- which means a backstop from the farm could be dangled for either need. -- Jesse Rogers

Are the Red Sox done shopping? The buzz around the Boston Red Sox is that they've already made their major move: Andrew Cashner. After dealing for the Orioles starter, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski emphasized that the Red Sox were committed to maintaining the top of their prospect pool, signaling that the team won't make a blockbuster trade leading up to the deadline. Pending the health of Nathan Eovaldi and his return off the injured list as a reliever rather than a starter, Boston will likely not chase a reliever at the deadline. -- Joon Lee

Dodgers will be aggressive for bullpen help: The Los Angeles Dodgers' only perceived weakness resides in their bullpen. Look for them to be aggressive here, with the hopes of acquiring both a reliable setup man and someone who could be effective against opposing left-handed hitters.

The Dodgers have the assets to compete with anyone. The question is how willing president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman will be to part with those assets in order to address a position that is traditionally so volatile, especially in a year when bullpen help is such a pronounced need throughout the sport.

"We've demonstrated an aggressiveness in the past, and we will equally approach this year not just in terms of the bullpen, but any kind of upgrade aggressively," Friedman said recently. "But we won't err on the side of stupid. We're comfortable being aggressive. We're not comfortable being stupid." -- Alden Gonzalez

Angels facing unique deadline dilemma: The Los Angeles Angels face a common problem with the trade deadline approaching: They reside on the very edges of contention, but are not quite close enough, or good enough, to trade future assets for short-term additions. The Angels need to bolster their starting rotation. Ideally, general manager Billy Eppler will acquire a top-of-the-rotation starter who is controllable beyond this coming season -- an even bigger need in the wake of Tyler Skaggs' sudden death.

Given the unique circumstances facing his team, Eppler was asked if he feels an added responsibility to acquire a big-name player simply to provide a jolt of energy to a team that could desperately use one for the final two months.

"We try to approach every single decision with a mindful, pragmatic approach, and understand all the variables that govern decisions, and ultimately think about the health of the organization first and foremost," Eppler said. "If you do that, it'd be very rare to regret decisions." -- Alden Gonzalez

Could Rays make deadline splash?: Some rival evaluators think Tampa Bay could be one of the most aggressive teams in adding players before the deadline -- Buster Olney

GMs to watch at the deadline

Buyers, sellers and MLB team-by-team needs

Five key potential buyers

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

Big need: Middle relief

Potential targets: Edwin Diaz, Ken Giles, Felipe Vazquez

The Dodgers have close to a perfect roster, leaving them with the luxury of targeting the reliever they need. That would be Vazquez, the ultimate late-inning lefty.

2. New York Yankees

Big need: Pitching depth

Potential targets: Matthew Boyd, Trevor Bauer, Kirby Yates

The Yankees don't need much but have the prospect surplus to aim high at the best pitchers on the trade market, the type who could make their biggest impact in October.

3. Houston Astros

Big need: Postseason starter

Potential targets: Matthew Boyd, Trevor Bauer, Marcus Stroman

Like the Yankees, once the Astros get healthy, they don't have many roster holes. Another ace-level starter would be ideal, and wouldn't it be just so tasty to have Bauer teamed up with college frenemy Gerrit Cole?

4. Minnesota Twins

Big need: Middle relief

Potential targets: Kirby Yates, Will Smith, Ken Giles

The Twins' only soft spot, other than the underbelly of statistical regression, lies in consistent sixth- and seventh-inning options, so even if Minnesota doesn't want to cough up the prospects needed to get the top available firemen, it should be able to bolster the bullpen one way or another.

5. Atlanta Braves

Big need: Veteran pitching

Potential targets: Zack Greinke, Trevor Bauer, Marcus Stroman

Given Kevin Gausman's struggles and the youth around Dallas Keuchel, another top-level veteran for October makes a lot of sense, and should someone such as Bauer or Greinke become available, no team has the prospect stock to outbid the Braves.

Five key potential sellers

1. San Francisco Giants

Big chips: SP Madison Bumgarner, RP Will Smith, 1B/3B Pablo Sandoval, RP Reyes Moronta, RP Sam Dyson, RP Tony Watson, RP Mark Melancon, 2B Joe Panik

What would they want back? Controllable starters, infielders, outfielders, prospects, salary flexibility

The Giants haven't helped first-year president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi's case to sell by overachieving just enough to hang on the fringes of contention. One more hot streak could put him in an awkward spot. If the Giants sell as expected, few teams have more quality options to offer contenders.

2. New York Mets

Big chips: OF Michael Conforto, SP Zack Wheeler, 3B Todd Frazier, SP Jason Vargas, C Wilson Ramos, SP Noah Syndergaard, RP Edwin Diaz

What would they want back? Relievers, prospects, salary flexibility

Whether it's Diaz, Wheeler or even Conforto, if the Mets decide to sell, freeing up future payroll would be nearly as important as adding a semblance of quality to a depleted farm system.

3. Arizona Diamondbacks

Big chips: SP Zack Greinke, OF David Peralta, C Alex Avila, SP Robbie Ray, RP Greg Holland

What would they want back? Prospect depth, salary flexibility

In some ways, it might almost be better if Arizona slumps the next couple of weeks, because if tomorrow were July 31, you could flip a coin as to whether the Snakes should buy or sell. If they sell, it would be a tough balancing act to determine how much cash they'd have to eat to move Greinke while getting some kind of future piece in return.

4. Toronto Blue Jays

Big chips: SP Marcus Stroman, SS Freddy Galvis, RP Ken Giles, 2B Eric Sogard, RP Daniel Hudson, RP Sam Gaviglio, RP Joe Biagini, 1B Justin Smoak, OF Randal Grichuk, SP Aaron Sanchez

What would they want back? Prospects

This is a crucial month for a franchise still early-ish in its rebuild that has nonetheless already graduated some high-impact talent to the majors. Toronto has some excellent pieces to sell, and getting near-ready prospects or controllable young veterans to augment the young core would improve the short-term outlook immensely.

5. Pittsburgh Pirates

Big chips: 2B Adam Frazier, RP Felipe Vazquez, RP Francisco Liriano, OF Starling Marte, RP Richard Rodriguez, OF Corey Dickerson, OF Melky Cabrera, OF Gregory Polanco

What would they want back? A young catcher

We know the Pirates aren't going to go all-in with a splashy move, so a move to acquire a young catcher makes a lot of sense in light of Francisco Cervelli's wise decision to give up the tools of ignorance. A deal built around Vazquez and one of the Dodgers' near-ready catching prospects makes a whole lot of sense for both teams.

The deal: Athletics get Homer Bailey from Royals (July 14)

Our one-sentence take: As they make their midseason surge up the standings, the Athletics added an under-the-radar starter having his best season in five years.

The deal: Red Sox get Andrew Cashner from Orioles (July 13)

Our one-sentence take: With Nathan Eovaldi ticketed for a bullpen role upon his return from the injured list, the Red Sox turned their attention to the rotation and added a veteran with American League East experience, in Cashner.

The deal: Yankees get Edwin Encarnacion from Mariners (June 16)

Our one-sentence take: Yes, this trade happened more than a month before the deadline, but there might not be a more impactful slugger than Encarnacion on the move this summer.
