Lightning's Point (lower body) out against Blues

Published in Hockey
Tuesday, 05 November 2024 12:17

Tampa Bay Lightning top-line forward Brayden Point has been ruled out of Tuesday's game against the host St. Louis Blues due to a lower-body injury.

Point sustained his injury during the first period of Tampa Bay's 7-4 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.

Anthony Cirelli likely will be elevated to the top line to play alongside former Hart Trophy recipient Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Hagel.

Point, 28, has 13 points (eight goals, five assists) and a club-best five power-play goals in 12 games this season.

He has 566 points (272 goals, 294 assists) in 592 career games since being selected by the Lightning in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft.

Also on Tuesday, the Lightning recalled forward Gage Goncalves from Syracuse of the American Hockey League.

Goncalves, 23, has four assists in four games with the Crunch this season.

Saka: Arsenal's title hopes are 'not delusional'

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 05 November 2024 12:54

Bukayo Saka has said it is "not delusional" to think Arsenal can still win the Premier League.

Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Newcastle saw the Gunners drop to fifth place in the table, seven points behind leaders Liverpool and five adrift of defending champions Manchester City.

Arsenal have not won the title since 2004 and finished runners-up to City in each of the past two seasons.

Saka has previously claimed that "this is the year" the Gunners finally end their wait and asked whether he still had faith in that view ahead of a daunting midweek Champions League trip to Inter Milan, the 23-year-old said: "For me I always live by the quote, 'it's not what you see, it's what you believe.'

"But at the same time it's important to not be delusional and in this case I don't think it's delusional to believe. If you look at our squad, the quality we have, the players we have and at the same time we're only in November so I don't think I've lost any belief. I don't think anyone in the changing room has either."

Saka has worn the armband on multiple occasions in the absence of regular skipper Martin Ødegaard through injury and is likely to do so on Wednesday evening when Arsenal face Inter in the Champions League league phase.

Pushed on whether he felt the need to address the group after a tricky run of two wins from their last five games, Saka said: "I think I would if I felt I needed to but I think it's important not to overreact as well.

"Obviously there's a lot of noise around the club and we lost two games and drew another one.

"But at the same time I think it's important to stay calm and doing all of these things can at the same time create more calm but they can also create a bit more panic and chaos and I don't think we need that right now.

"So I'm just doing my best to help the team in every way I can and if I need to do that I'll do that for sure."

Source: Colts QB Richardson off-limits in trades

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 05 November 2024 13:17

INDIANAPOLIS -- Multiple teams inquired about the availability of Colts second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson ahead of the NFL trade deadline, but the team maintained that Richardson was off-limits, a source told ESPN.

Richardson was benched last week for veteran Joe Flacco, creating doubt about the future of the 2023 fourth overall draft pick. Colts coach Shane Steichen said he made the decision to make Flacco the starter "going forward" because he determined that Flacco gave the team a better chance to win.

The Colts struggled Sunday night in a loss to Minnesota, producing one of their worst offensive performances of the season. Steichen said Monday that he plans to start Flacco again for Sunday's home game against Buffalo Bills.

Richardson's struggles this season have been well documented, including his league-low 44.4% completion rate and seven interceptions. But there was significant interest around the league in Richardson leading up to the 2023 draft, and his tantalizing physical traits likely still make him appealing.

For the Colts, trading Richardson would have been stunning. Although the team's long-term commitment to the player has been questioned since his benching, the Colts don't have an obvious path to another starter quarterback beyond Flacco, who is 39 and playing on a one-year contract. Entertaining a trade would fly in the face of what the Colts said after making the quarterback change, including Steichen saying the team was "not giving up on him by any means."

Internally, the Colts have maintained that they still consider Richardson their future and hope to reinstate him as their starter at some point, whether this season or next.

"We're not losing faith in him," Steichen said.

Sources: Nuggets' Gordon out multiple weeks

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 05 November 2024 12:43

Denver Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon will miss multiple weeks because of a right calf strain, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Gordon suffered the injury in the Nuggets' win over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night. The loss is a difficult blow to Denver, which is 4-3 on the season.

The Nuggets have also been without starting point guard Jamal Murray for the past two games as he is in the NBA's concussion protocol.

Gordon, who signed a four-year, $133 million contract extension before the regular season, has averaged 15.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season.

Gordon has shot 55% on 3-pointers this season, which ranks in the top 10 among players with at least 20 attempts.

Tillman solo goal helps PSV to big 1st UCL win

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 05 November 2024 11:49

Ryan Flamingo and Malik Tillman scored first half goals as a dominant PSV Eindhoven picked up a first win of their Champions League campaign with an impressive 4-0 victory over 10-man Girona at the Philips Stadion on Tuesday.

Flamingo netted his first Champions League goal when he turned in Tillman's long throw, though replays suggested the latter's foot was in the field of play and the effort should have been disallowed.

United States midfielder Tillman added a second when he burst into the box unopposed and produced a fine finish.

It was the 22-year-old Tillman's first Champions League goal for PSV since joining the club from Bayern Munich in 2023.

Johan Bakayoko's low drive from the edge of the box and an own goal from Ladislav Krejci sealed an emphatic victory for the Dutch club, who move into the play-off places with five points.

Girona, who are outside of those knockout places in 26th position with three points, were not helped by a second yellow card for captain Arnau Martínez 10 minutes into the second half and might have lost by a greater margin as PSV hit the post and missed several other opportunities.

Girona offered little threat going forward but forced a superb early double save from PSV goalkeeper Walter Benítez. He pushed away Krejci's low shot and seconds later denied Bojan Miovski at the near post.

That was against the run of play and PSV went in front on 16 minutes with a fortunate goal.

Tillman's long throw towards the six-yard box was turned into the net by Flamingo, who had got in front of his marker. But none of the officials spotted the fact the American had a foot in the field when he launched the ball towards goal.

The home side doubled their advantage after some poor Girona defending allowed Tillman to surge into the box unopposed and sweep the ball into the far corner of the net from eight yards.

PSV's Luuk de Jong should have made it 3-0 when he was teed up perfectly by the excellent Tillman, but his effort from in front of goal struck the post and Girona were able to clear.

The evening got worse for the visitors when Martinez collected a second yellow card on 55 minutes for an unnecessary foul, and PSV were able to add two more goals.

Bakayoko's jinking run on the edge of the box ended with a perfectly placed shot low into the bottom corner, before the ball ricocheted off Krejci and into the net two minutes from fulltime.

Scotland's Graham to miss SA Test with concussion

Tuesday, 05 November 2024 09:33

"Hell do nothing for the next three days, then he starts the graduated return to play," head coach Gregor Townsend confirmed.

"If everything goes well and hes feeling good, hell be available for Portugal [on 16 November]."

Scotland were already without Kyle Steyn, but Townsend did reveal that Kyle Rowe's hamstring injury - which forced the winger off against Fiji - is not as bad as originally feared.

"Hes a chance for this week," Townsend said. "We all felt after the game that could be him missing the next few games, but hes recovering well."

The squad will also be bolstered by the availability of Toulouse full-back Blair Kinghorn and Sale Sharks winger Arron Reed, as well as vice-captain Finn Russell.

Leafs' Matthews (upper body) out vs. Bruins

Tuesday, 05 November 2024 08:46

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been ruled out of Tuesday's game against the visiting Boston Bruins due to an upper-body injury.

Matthews, who is considered day-to-day with the injury, had an assist and logged just over 22 minutes of ice time in Toronto's 2-1 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on Sunday.

Fellow forward Max Domi was elevated to the top line in place of Matthews during Tuesday's morning skate.

Matthews, 27, has recorded 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 13 games this season.

He led the NHL in goals scored for the third time in four seasons in 2023-24, tallying a career-high 69 to go along with 38 assists in 81 games.

Matthews has recorded 660 points (373 goals, 287 assists) in 575 career games since Toronto selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft.

Club World Cup: No player rest days after WCQs

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 05 November 2024 10:25

Teams competing in next year's FIFA Club World Cup must arrive in the United States three to five days before their first game, FIFA confirmed via tournament rules published on Tuesday.

This leaves players facing the prospect of no rest days between international World Cup qualifiers and the start of the club tournament.

FIFA has contacted qualified teams for the 2025 Club World Cup -- a 32-team, 63-game tournament which starts on June 15 -- with their rules and regulations for the tournament which will conclude with a final at a yet-to-be-announced venue on July 13.

As part of the newly disseminated rules, clubs were also told they must field their strongest teams in games and face fines if they fail to do so, the source told ESPN.

The tournament, a project driven by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, has led to growing unrest within the game as players' unions and league associations taking action against FIFA in the European courts.

Leading players have also voiced their concern over the amount of games they are being forced to play with coaches including Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti complaining about the workload on their squads.

And with an international break scheduled between June 6-10 next year for qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup, FIFA's insistence on clubs arriving in the U.S. three to five days before their first game could see international players forced to represent their national team less than a week before playing in the Club World Cup.

The Champions League final is due to be staged in Munich on May 31 -- a week before the international break -- and it raises the prospect of players from City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich going from a Champions League final, into and international round of fixtures, and then the Club World Cup without the prospect of a break until mid-July.

FIFA's Club World Cup regulations also state that owners cannot have shares in more than one club and team must have a tournament squad of 26-35 players, with special transfer windows opened between June 1-10.

FIFA will judge any disputes between Club World Cup teams who each want to take the same player to the tournament.

The tournament straddles the June 30 date when player contracts typically expire -- as Kylian Mbappé's did when moving in July as a free agent to Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain -- and has forced FIFA to find solutions for new transfer issues.

Potential free agents at qualified teams include Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, Bayern Munich trio Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sané, Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries and Madrid's Ferland Mendy.

Pending free agents can officially start talks in January with other clubs and reach agreements to sign for them next season.

However, the June 15 start of the Club World Cup is technically still this season and FIFA has given member federations the option of opening an exceptional transfer window from June 1-10 to push deals through.

It means players in Europe could play for one team in the Champions League final on May 31 and for a different team 15 days later at the Club World Cup.

FIFA also will let Club World Cup teams change their squad list mid-tournament, from June 27-July 3 to "replace players whose contracts have naturally expired."

However, players can represent only one team at the Club World Cup and would not be eligible to transfer and play for another in the second half of the tournament.

FIFA has yet to confirm tournament prize money or details of the tournament draw, which is expected early in December.

The 32nd and last entry, from South America, will be decided on Nov. 30 by the Copa Libertadores final between Brazilian teams Atlético Mineiro and Botafogo in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Teams qualified by winning a continental club championship from 2020 to 2024, or were ranked highly by consistently good results in competitions. Countries were limited to two entries unless they had more than two title winners. Brazil will have four teams in the U.S. and Mexico will have three.

FIFA added Lionel Messi's club Inter Miami to the lineup last month to represent the host nation based on its regular-season record, rather than wait for the MLS Cup final on Dec. 7. Inter Miami will play in the opening game at the Miami Dolphins stadium.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

The long list of registered players, which will be pruned by the IPL after receiving input from the franchises, contains all the marquee Indian players who were not retained by their franchises. Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer - who were captains of Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively, but were not retained - are listed at a base price of INR 2 crore, along with R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal, who were both released by Rajasthan Royals.
Mohammed Shami, who hasn't played any cricket since the 2023 ODI World Cup final in November last year because of various injures, is also listed at a base price of INR 2 crore after not being retained by Gujarat Titans.

The other Indian players with the maximum base price of INR 2 crore are Khaleel Ahmed, Deepak Chahar, Venkatesh Iyer, Avesh Khan, Ishan Kishan, Mukesh Kumar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, T Natarajan, Devdutt Padikkal, Krunal Pandya, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav.

Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan, who went unsold in the last auction, have registered at a base price of INR 75 lakh.

Stokes had opted out of IPL 2024 as well to manage his workload and fitness. During the Hundred in August earlier this year, Stokes had suffered a hamstring injury, which sidelined him for two months.

Mitchell Starc, who became the most expensive player in IPL history when he was bought for INR 24.50 crore by KKR in 2024, is back in the auction pool at a base price of INR 2 crore. Jofra Archer is also on the list at that same base price, having not played in the IPL since 2023, when he appeared in only five games for Mumbai Indians because of injury issues.

England fast bowler James Anderson, who has not played a T20 since 2014 and never been part of the IPL, has registered for the auction at a base price of INR 1.25 crore. Anderson retired from international cricket during this English summer and took up the role of bowling coach with the England team.
The long list also includes a player from Italy, Thomas Draca, who played from Brampton in the Global T20 Canada. Draca, 24, was more recently picked by MI Emirates for the upcoming season of the ILT20 in the UAE.

Each franchise can build a squad of up to 25 players, which means there are 204 slots available at the auction after 46 players were retained across the ten teams from last season.

Each team has a total purse of INR 120 crore to build their squads, but following the retention, Punjab Kings have the biggest purse remaining (INR 110.5 crore) to spend at the mega auction, followed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (INR 83 crore), Delhi Capitals (INR 73 crore), Gujarat Titans (INR 69 crore), Lucknow Super Giants (INR 69 crore) Chennai Super Kings (INR 55 crore), Kolkata Knight Riders (INR 51 crore), Mumbai Indians (INR 45 crore), Sunrisers Hyderabad (INR 45 crore), Rajasthan Royals (INR 41 crore).

The IPL has allowed teams to retain up to six players this time - of which a maximum of five can be capped and a maximum of two can be uncapped. The six players can either be retained outright ahead of the auction, or can be bought back using Right-to-Match (RTM) options at the auction, or a combination of both.

If a player has been bought by another franchise at the mega auction, the franchise that he was part of in IPL 2024 can step in at the end of the bidding process and buy back their player using the RTM option by matching the highest bid. After that, the franchise that made the winning bid will be given another opportunity to raise the bid to whatever amount they wish. In that case, the player's previous team will have to match the increased bid to buy back their player.

Having retained just two players, PBKS have the most RTM options (four) at the auction. RCB, who retained three players, have three while Delhi Capitals, who retained four players, have two. Five teams - MI, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, SRH and LSG - retained five players each and have just one RTM option at the auction, while RR and KKR have no RTM options.

There is of course no limit on the number of players a franchise can buy back if they place the highest bids for them during regular bidding at the auction.
