Home pair Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid lost in the men's doubles final at the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships, while Jordanne Whiley also suffered defeat in the women's.

Hewett and Reid lost 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 7-5 to fourth seeds Gustavo Fernandez and Shingo Kunieda in Nottingham.

Britain's Whiley and her Japanese partner Yui Kamiji lost to Aniek van Koot and Diede de Groot in their final.

The Dutch duo battled to a 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 victory.

Britain's Andy Lapthorne plays Niels Vink of the Netherlands in the quad singles final on Sunday.

Home favourite Alexander Zverev missed out on his first Hamburg Open final as defending champion Nikoloz Basilashvili fought back from facing two match points to edge an epic semi-final.

Georgian fourth seed Basilashvili recovered to win 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-5) in three hours and seven minutes.

Basilashvili, 27, will face Russian Andrey Rublev, who beat Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta, in Sunday's final.

Hamburg-born Zverev led 5-3 in the decider but could not take his chances.

World number five Zverev, whose split with coach Ivan Lendl was announced by the eight-time Grand Slam winner before Friday's quarter-final win against Serbia's Filip Krajinovic, was aiming to reach his third final in 2019.

Instead it is Basilashvili who will take on 21-year-old Rublev for the clay-court title.

Rublev, who caused an upset against Austrian top seed Dominic Thiem in the last eight, trailed by a set and a break before winning 11 of the final 13 games to seal a 4-6 7-5 6-1 victory over Carreno Busta.

Andy Moscoso and Luis Carrillo combined to win the under 13 boys’ team title, recording a 3-2 win against Costa Rica’s Emanuel Rivera and Alejandro Montoya in the final. Impressive, the margin of victory was even more impressive in the under 13 girls’ team deciding contest, Jenny Cux and Kimberly Garcia secured a 3-0 win in opposition to Mexico’s Ximena Figueroa and Natalia Dominguez.

Likewise, in the under 11 boys’ team final, Ian Morales and Adrian Castillo caught the eye; they recorded a 3-1 win against Mexico’s David Chacon and Eduardo Perez. Two silver medals for Mexico, there was one more; in a group organised under 11 girls’ team competition, Mabel Lopez and Kamila Sanchez finished next in line to Andrea Moscoso and Sarah Quinto.

Ricardo Gatica

Team event success for Guatemala, it was the same in the individual events with Ricardo Gatica the player to excel. In the under 13 age group category, he beat colleague Luis Carrillo (11-5, 12-14, 11-6, 11-8) to arrest the title, having early won the boys’ doubles title in partnership with Luis Anton and the mixed alongside Jenny Cux.

At the final hurdle of the former the Guatemalan duo accounted for Costa Rica’s Alejandro Montoya and Emanuel Rivera (11-7, 7-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-5), in the latter for compatriots Luis Anton and Kimberly Garcia (9-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7).

Mexico

Notable success for Guatemala in the under 13 age group individual events; there was also success in the under 11 years category but to a lesser extent. Adrian Castillo and Ian Morales combined to win the boys’ doubles event beating Costa Rica’s Sebastian Aviles and Ajenandro Espinoza in the final (11-5, 11-7, 11-5).

Rather differently, there was success upon success for Mexico, Kamila Sanchez the player to note. She won the girls’ singles title beating Costa Rica’s Maria Araya in the final (11-5, 12-14, 11-7, 11-6), having partnered Mabel Lopez to girls’ doubles success and Eduardo Perez to mixed doubles gold. At the final hurdle in the girls’ doubles event it was success against Costa Rica’s Maria Araya and Sharon Gonzalez (11-6, 11-3, 4-11, 11-7); in the mixed doubles when facing Guatemala’s Ian Morales and Andrea Moscoso (12-10, 11-6, 5-11, 11-6).

Success for Mexico and there was more; Natalia Dominguez won the under 13 girls’ singles event beating colleague Barbara Seana in the final (11-8, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8).

Costa Rica

Also, there was gold for Costa Rica. Sebastian Aviles accounted for Panama’s Ian Mock (11-3, 11-9, 11-9) to emerge the under 11 boys’ singles champion, Lucia Zavaleta and Sofia Perez joined foces to secure under 13 girls’ doubles gold. At the final hurdle they beat Mexico’s Natalia Dominguez and Ximena Figeruoa (5-11, 11-8, 13-11, 13-11).

A total of 42 boys and 31 girls representing the countries of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico and Panama competed.

Success for Komet Akbar and David Jacobs in men’s class 10 was as status predicted; they commenced play the top seeds but they were not necessarily the favourites, their 2-1 win in the final against China’s Lian Hao and Mao Shubo was a performance of note. Just under three years ago at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Lian Hao had partnered Ma Lin to gold in men’s team class 9-10.

However, the success gained by Lola Amalia and Ana Widyasari and in women’s class 11; in addition to that achieved by Tatok Hardiyanto and Agus Sutanto men’s class 5 was not to be anticipated. Neither outfit commenced matters amongst the top seeded names.

Impressive performances

In a group organised event Lola Amalia and Ana Widyasari finished ahead of Hong Kong’s Ng Mui Wui and Wong Ka Man, the no.2 seeds; Japan’s Kanami Furukawa and Sayuri Mio, the top seeds, having to settle for third place.

Impressive, it was arguably even more impressive from Tatok Hardiyanto and Agus Sutanto; they recorded a 2-1 final win in opposition to the top seeded Chinese outfit formed by Cao Ningning, Liu Fu and Zhan Dashun. Most notably in the vital third and concluding match of the fixture, Tatok Hardiyanto beat Cao Ningning (11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 6-11, 11-6), the reigning Paralympic Games champion and gold medallist two days earlier in Taichung.

Unexpected winners

Surprise outcomes, it was the same in women’s class 10 and men’s class 6-7; both victories at the expense of top seeded Chinese teams. In the former, a group organised event, Chinese Taipei’s Tian Shiau-Wen and Lin Tzu-Yu finished ahead of Hou Chunxiao, Fan Lei and Zhao Xiaojin; in the latter DPR Korea’s Jon Ju Hyon and Kim Yong Rok recorded a 2-0 win in the title decider when facing Liao Keli and Yan Shuo.

Unexpected silver medals for top seeded Chinese teams and there was a somewhat surprise bronze medal. In men’s team class 4, Guo Xingyuan and Shi Yanping, the leading pair on duty, experienced a 2-1 semi-final defeat at the hands of Thailand’s Wanchai Chaiwut and Niyom Nachai. An impressive win by the Thai pair but it was not to be gold; a 2-0 defeat was the order of the day in the final when facing Korea Republic’s Kim Younggun and Lee Kyeonghun.

Chinese success

Disappointments for China but there was gold. In the men’s events, Feng Panfeng, Zhai Xiang and Zhao Ping combined to win the class 3 title; Peng Weinan and Zhao Shuai emerged the class 8 champions, as did Han Yajie and Zhao Yi Qing in class 9. Meanwhile, in the women’s events, Gu Xiaodan and Zhang Maio combined to win class 4; Huang Wenjuan, Mao Jingdian and Wang Rui joined forces to reserve the class 8 title. Chastain Stomps Pocono Truck Series Field

Published in Racing
Saturday, 27 July 2019 12:01

LONG POND, Pa. – Ross Chastain continued his remarkable season with his third NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series victory of the year on Saturday afternoon at Pocono Raceway.

Chastain, at the wheel of the No. 45 Chevrolet Silverado for Niece Motorsports, was in his own league throughout much of the 60-lap Gander RV 150. He led all but six laps, only giving up the lead for a pit stop late in the second stage.

The Florida driver dedicated the victory to the late Nick Harrison, Kaulig Racing’s crew chief who died unexpectedly last week.

“It takes us being a little mad. We’re a little made we lost Nick Harrison. We realize everybody goes when it’s their time, but we miss that big boy,” Chastain said. “These boys, a lot of them worked with him and I got to work with him at Kaulig Racing this year. Man, we miss him.”

Chastain made his only pit stop of the day on lap 27, just prior to the end of the second stage. That was done strategically by his team, with the goal being for Chastain to cycle back to the front of the field during the caution period between stages two and three when the rest of the leaders hit pit road.

The strategy worked out perfectly and Chastain cycled back to the front of the field for the final restart of the race. Despite having less fuel than many of those pursuing him, Chastain was easily able to make it to the checkered flag first.

“We stomped them in the dirt,” Chastain said. “I’m so dang excited.”

Tyler Ankrum, who earned his first NASCAR Outdoors Truck Series victory in the last event on July 11 at Kentucky Speedway when the race leader ran out of gas late in the race, chased Chastain across the line in second.

“I think it just goes to show everyone that you can still race with them and it’s not all about fuel strategy,” said Ankrum. “Honestly I just kind of fought myself at the beginning of the race there. I was just overdriving the truck. Just kind of stepping on my own toes and got behind.

“Bono (Manion, crew chief) did a real good job with pit strategy and I was able to start on the front row (for the final restart). Me and Ross were able to run away from the field. I thought I had a good enough truck to chase him down, but just with the air and how everything works I couldn’t get close enough to him to catch the draft.”

Harrison Burton finished third for Kyle Busch Motorsports, followed by ARCA regular Christian Eckes and GMS Racing’s Brett Moffitt.

Oliver Askew Pads Indy Lights Point Lead

Published in Racing
Saturday, 27 July 2019 12:43

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Oliver Askew extended his Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires points lead with a commanding victory at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Saturday.

The 22-year-old’s fifth win of the season in 12 races stretched his advantage to 35 points over Dutchman Rinus VeeKay, who finished third Saturday behind Askew’s teammate, Ryan Norman.

After claiming the pole position in qualifying Friday afternoon, Askew held off outside front row qualifier and teammate Robert Megennis at the first corner and was never seriously threatened throughout the 30-lap race held in warm conditions on the undulating and picturesque 2.258-mile road circuit.

“I feel as though I’m in a mode right now,” Askew said. “I was super-happy to win but the job is not done. We have a lot of races to go and we have to keep our heads down. Rinus and I are always going to be on the podium together so it’s important to win every race. We were quick in the test last week so it’s down to me and the team to execute in qualifying, which we did this weekend.

“I’m so proud of everyone at Andretti Autosport for giving me such a quick car. We’ve been fast here (at Mid-Ohio) the past few years, especially last year with Pato (O’Ward) and Colton (Herta) and Ryan (Norman) sweeping the podium. Maybe we can sweep tomorrow, but for me and my camp, the goal is to execute and win as many races as possible. We’re the only car starting on new tires tomorrow so we should be good.”

A preceding Stadium Super Truck Series race made for a slippery track surface, especially during the opening stages of the race. Toronto race winner Aaron Telitz was the first to be caught out, spinning at the exit of turn five on the opening lap. Next time around, third-place runner Toby Sowery looped his BN Racing/Team Pelfrey Dallara-AER in turn nine, and then Canadian Dalton Kellett ran off the road on the exit of the final corner, turn 14. All three resumed at the back of the pack.

Megennis remained in contention, only 1.5 seconds in arrears of Askew with 10 laps completed, with Norman, having inherited third place from Sowery, also chasing gamely in third. VeeKay, meanwhile, after problems in qualifying caused him to line up only sixth on the grid, was up into fourth at this stage, albeit with a deficit of more than three seconds to the leading trio.

Sowery, who started third, had worked his way back up to fifth following his early gyration, only to lose control again as he crested the rise at turn 11 on Lap 10, spinning off into the tire barriers. Sowery was unhurt but the full-course caution waved while his stricken car was retrieved.

Askew made an exemplary restart and soon began to pull away from Megennis, who was unable to shake off the attentions of Norman. On lap 19, Norman took advantage of his AER turbo engine’s push-to-pass feature to power past Megennis on the main straightaway. Five laps later VeeKay attempted to follow suit, only for Megennis to hold his line through Turn Four, forcing VeeKay to the outside and, ultimately, to tuck back into line. Next time around, Megennis bowed to the inevitable as VeeKay completed his pass a little earlier on the straightaway and moved through neatly into third.

The finish:

Oliver Askew, Ryan Norman, Rinus VeeKay, Robert Megennis, David Malukas, Lucas Kohl, Dalton Kellett, Aaron Telitz, Toby Sowery.

Harvick Keeps Rolling With Pocono Pole

Published in Racing
Saturday, 27 July 2019 14:10

LONG POND, Pa. – Fresh off his first victory of the season last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Kevin Harvick kept the momentum going Saturday at Pocono Raceway.

Harvick took the top spot in Gander RV 400 qualifying aboard his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, circulating the 2.5-mile triangular speedway in 51.707 seconds at 174.058 mph. Harvick was the only driver to average more than 174 mph during his qualifying attempt.

The No. 4 team did not make a mock qualifying run in practice, so Harvick was unsure just how fast his Ford Mustang would be prior to qualifying Saturday afternoon.

“I want to thank Rodney Childers and Dax and Billy and everybody that works on this No. 4 Busch Beer Ford Mustang,” Harvick said after his fourth pole of the season. “We didn’t do a qualifying run because we were scrambling a little bit in race trim and trying to get our car right in race trim. Our teammates did some qualifying runs and we tried to match some of the things that they did and adapt and adjust from there.

“In the end sometimes it’s better to just wing it and these guys do a great job when you’re scrambling and winging it.”

Harvick will be joined on the front row by reigning series champion Joey Logano, who was .203 seconds behind Harvick. Harvick’s teammate Aric Almirola qualified third to give Ford a sweep of the top-three positions.

Erik Jones was the fastest Toyota, qualifying fourth. Austin Dillon qualified firth aboard his No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, William Byron, Kurt Busch and Daniel Suarez completed the top-10 in qualifying.

Qualifying results are unofficial until all cars clear pre-race inspection on Sunday morning prior to the Gander RV 400. Sunday’s Gander RV 400 is scheduled to begin shortly after 3 p.m. EST at Pocono Raceway.
