Ingram wins Masterton trophy for perseverance

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 18:26

Connor Ingram, the goaltender who shared how his undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder led him to drink to cope with anxiety and has blossomed into a full-time NHL player, has won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Ingram had a breakout performance for the Arizona Coyotes this past season, years removed from seeking and receiving help from the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program, which is run jointly by the league and union and has been in the headlines lately for others' participation.

"You don't do these things for awards. I did this to get my life back together," Ingram told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "The fact that you get recognized for it is something that a lot of people who put their life back together don't get."

The other finalists were Calgary's Oliver Kylington, who stepped away for more than a year and a half for mental health reasons, and Carolina's Frederik Andersen, who missed several months this season while dealing with blood clotting issues. The Masterton is voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.

"Those other two guys were more than deserving, so just to be in that group and to be a part of it's pretty exciting," Ingram said.

Ingram was on Nashville's practice squad early in the pandemic-delayed and shortened 2021 season when he went into the player assistance program and left the Predators in late January. He returned to play a handful of games for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League that spring, but it wasn't until he sold his house and cars and moved from his hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to Nashville that summer that he met his fiancée and got back on track.

"I just restarted," he said. "It was good for me, and it was good to restart."

Ingram made his NHL debut Oct. 24, 2021 -- roughly nine months after going into the program -- and appeared in four playoff games in the spring of 2022 when Juuse Saros was sidelined by injury and David Rittich faltered in the first-round opener. Claimed off waivers by Arizona in October 2022, he has since made 74 starts, sharing the net with Karel Vejmelka, who has become a friend and a seatmate on buses and planes.

"Half the time when I got something I want to talk about, he wants to talk about it, too," Ingram said. "We're pretty similar and we think a lot the same, so he's a great guy to have around."

Now 27 and with Utah after the franchise relocated there to begin play in Salt Lake City in the fall, Ingram said he hopes his best hockey is ahead of him after taking advantage of the opportunities he eventually got to show what he could do.

"I felt like I was a guy who just never went away," he said. "I played seven years in the minors and just slowly grinded my way until you get that opportunity. That's all you can ask for is a chance, and when somebody gives it to you, you better be ready to go with it or else it's not going to last very long."

Utah general manager Bill Armstrong said the organization was proud to be represented by Ingram.

"Connor's journey through adversity and his unwavering commitment to the game of hockey truly embodies the essence of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy," Armstrong said. "Since his return, Connor has not only excelled on the ice but has emerged as an inspiration to hockey players across the globe as he continues to tell his story and emphasize the importance of seeking support during life's darkest moments."

Injured Messi out for Miami's game at Orlando

Lionel Messi will miss Inter Miami's match against Orlando City on Wednesday night at Inter & Co Stadium, after suffering an injury to his left knee during his team's 3-2 MLS win over Montreal on Saturday.

Montreal defender George Campbell fouled Messi in the 40th minute of the match, forcing the forward to go down while holding his knee. Miami's medical team rushed to the scene before clearing Messi to play the rest of the game.

Despite his participation throughout the 90 minutes, Miami assistant coach Javier Morales confirmed Messi "felt the knock" while doing regenerative work on Monday.

Robert Taylor replaced Messi in Gerardo "Tata" Martino's starting XI.

"He suffered a hit to the knee on Saturday versus Montréal, he continued playing through the end of the game and then iced it when finished," Morales said. "He trained with the players yesterday who did regenerative work, with the bicycle and a bit of jogging on the field."

After careful evaluation of Messi, the team decided against his participation in the game against Orlando. The forward previously missed a stretch of games for Miami early in the season, sitting out MLS and Concacaf Champions Cup action from March 13 to April 6 due to a muscle injury.

Since Messi made his debut, the team is 2-4-6 (WDL) in all competitions when he does not play and 15-7-3 when he does. Inter Miami currently leads the Eastern Conference table with 27 points in 13 games as Messi rewrites league history books with his 12 goals and 13 assists to start the season.

Ten Hag: 'Example' Fernandes wanted at Man Utd

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 17:49

Erik ten Hag assured Bruno Fernandes that Manchester United want to keep him this summer after the Portugal midfielder said he will only stay if he feels wanted at Old Trafford.

Fernandes has been linked with a move at the end of the season and ESPN reported on Wednesday that Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr are one of the clubs interested.

Speaking after United's 3-2 win over Newcastle United, Fernandes said he will leave if he is not wanted.

But responding to the comments, Ten Hag told Fernandes he is part of the club's plans for the future.

"The club wants to keep Bruno, there is no question I think," said Ten Hag. "I have to see the interview. As far as I know and everything I know from him, he loves Manchester United.

"He loves the fans and he loves to play for Manchester United. So that is all I know. You see he always gives his best. He's an example."

Fernandes has a contract until at least 2026, but United's financial position means that a large offer for almost any player will have to be considered.

It has led to a host of clubs from across Europe and the Saudi Pro League showing an interest in the 29-year-old and asked about his future following the win over Newcastle, he appeared to use the opportunity to send a message to club bosses.

"The club needs to want me," Fernandes told Sky Sports. "I feel that the club wants me to be part of the future. As I always said, I don't want to be a player the club doesn't want to have.

"If for some reason the club doesn't want me, I will go."

The win comes as relief for United during a season in which they are on track to have their worst Premier League finish ever, but victory for Chelsea at Brighton still leaves Ten Hag's side outside of the European places going into the final day on Sunday.

United still have once chance at silverware when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25.

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag enjoyed a rare good day as his side beat Newcastle United 3-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday, and he can only hope for a couple more before this miserable season draws to a close.

As debate and speculation swirls around the Dutchman's position as manager, Man United won a Premier League game for just the third time in nearly three months. It was achieved thanks to goals from three young players, Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Højlund, while Ten Hag was also able to welcome back Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and -- crucially -- Lisandro Martínez from injury.

With one game to go, victory keeps alive Man United's hopes of finishing in the top seven and qualifying for European competition through their league position. It also raises a faint hope that, with an FA Cup final to come against Manchester City at the end of the month, a disastrous season may yet end on a positive note.

Whether or not any of it will be enough to keep Ten Hag in a job, only new club investors Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS know.

"It is a victory and I was pleased with the performance of the team," said Ten Hag. "It's always difficult to play against Newcastle, they are very physical, but also we played good football, scored good goals, especially the first. It was a nice team goal. We get some players back, we have now more players available and you have a bench."

For once, his post-match news conference was largely positive.

Thanks to Chelsea's 2-1 win over Brighton on Wednesday, Man United can only realistically rise as high as seventh in the table, which would still represent their worst finish in the Premier League era.

They did, though, avoid a record 10th competitive home defeat on their last Old Trafford outing of the season and after a campaign, which has left Ten Hag battered and bruised, he will take the small wins wherever he can.

As welcome as the result against Newcastle was, there were still parts of the performance that raised more questions than answers.

One such: why has it taken so long to give Amad Diallo a chance? The 21-year-old Ivorian delivered Man United's moment of the season with an extra time FA Cup winner against Liverpool in March, but he's had to wait another two months for a Premier League start.

Finally picked against Arsenal on Sunday, Diallo kept his place against Newcastle and delivered an assist for Mainoo and then a ferocious strike to score himself.

"Amad has had a difficult season because of a bad injury," said Ten Hag. "He fought back and his performances in training and progress has been very good. Now he got his chance and has taken his opportunity. That's how it should work. There is always internal competition and I am very pleased with his level."

One of the criticisms of Ten Hag has been his loyalty to underperforming 85 million signing Antony. But with the Brazilian left on the bench, Amad seized his opportunity and there's every chance he's already done enough to start at Wembley against Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25 (stream live ESPN+, U.S. only).

As if to emphasise the point, the stadium began singing "Amad Diallo" midway through the second half. It was followed with support for the manager and chants of "we're on the march with Ten Hag's army."

The majority of fans are undecided about whether he should be allowed to carry on next season and, for now, so are the club. Beating Newcastle has bought him some breathing space after an awful run of form since the end of February. A decision on his future is set to be delayed until after the trip to Wembley.

After the final whistle against Newcastle, Ten Hag delivered a speech to the fans from the centre of the pitch, promising that "these players will do everything to win the cup." It was well received and after a lap around the stadium, Ten Hag walked down the tunnel to applause from the supporters who had stayed behind.

"The whole season, for the fans, it is a very difficult season," admitted Ten Hag afterwards. "We are very pleased with the attitude of the fans."

He will be, too. Whether or not it makes a difference to Ratcliffe remains to be seen.

After so many low points, there's a strong argument to sack Ten Hag. But while there are still games left -- particularly the cup final against Man City -- there remain opportunities for Ten Hag to sway the debate in his favour.

It will take more than a narrow win over Newcastle to convince everyone, but there is, at least, a glimmer of hope that maybe an otherwise forgettable campaign can have a positive end.

"After the season we have had so far, I don't talk about proud," said Ten Hag. "We are all disappointed with the season, but still we can win something."

Sources: Steelers DL Heyward sitting out OTAs

PITTSBURGH -- Steelers defensive lineman and reigning Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Cameron Heyward has not participated in voluntary offseason workouts and does not plan to attend OTAs as he seeks a contract extension, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Heyward, set to become a free agent in 2025, has never missed an offseason program.

Heyward, 35, has registered the most defensive stops in the league since 2019 with 242, via Next Gen Stats, and the third-most sacks among interior rushers during that span with 58.5.

He plans to play several more years and is healthy again after last year's core muscle injury, a source told Fowler.

Heyward started dealing with the core muscle injury during the 2023 training camp and ended up missing six games when a fall tore his groin muscle in Week 1 and required surgery. But he returned ahead of schedule to play the final 10 games.

The longest-tenured Steeler and a longtime captain was adamant in his desire to continue playing a day after the Steelers' wild-card loss to the Buffalo Bills.

"Of course, I want to play; in my mind, I want to play more than just one more season," Heyward said in January. "I've just got to get healthy first. We talk about coming back from injury, I was told at the time it was a 12-week process, and we came back in six weeks. I fought the doctors every week.

"I just wanted to put my hand in that pile. But the flip side of that is I put my body through a lot of pain this year. It was getting me to the stadium and go from there, but I can't be doing that year in and year out."

Heyward is in the final year of a four-year, $65 million extension signed in 2020 and is scheduled to count $22.4 million against the 2024 salary cap.

Warriors' Curry wins 2nd Magic Johnson Award

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 16:58

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is the winner of the 2023-24 Magic Johnson Award, the Professional Basketball Writers Association announced Wednesday.

The award is voted on by more than 200 writers and editors who belong to the PBWA and honors the NBA player who excels both on the court and in displaying "cooperation and grace in dealing with the media and fans," according to the organization.

It's the second Johnson award for Curry, who also won in 2016. Damian Lillard (2017, 2020) and Shane Battier (2007, 2013) are the other two-time winners.

There were five finalists for the award: Curry, Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat), DeMar DeRozan (Chicago Bulls), Rudy Gobert (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers).

Curry, 36, has won about every award in his 15 seasons since the Warriors selected him No. 7 overall in the 2009 NBA draft. Among the honors, he's a two-time league MVP, four-time NBA champion, 10-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA first-team selection and a member of the league's 75th Anniversary Team.

For the 2022-23 season, Curry won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award and was named the Social Justice Champion, winning the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Trophy.

In the 2023-24 season, Curry averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists and was named Clutch Player of the Year.

Rutschman walkoff saves O's streak of no sweeps

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 18:11

BALTIMORE -- Adley Rutschman has still never been swept in the regular season as a big leaguer.

With that streak on the verge of ending, the Baltimore catcher took matters into his own hands Wednesday, hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2. The Orioles have now gone 105 consecutive regular-season series of at least two decisions (no ties) without being swept. Only two teams have had longer runs.

"Our guys are really resilient, they have been all year," Rutschman said. "Always the next guy up. We never think we're out of it."

Baltimore's streak lost some of its luster when the Orioles were in fact swept in last year's AL Division Series by Texas, but the regular-season run is still fascinating. Of the 105 series, 76 have been three games, 19 have been four, nine have been two, and there was one five-gamer. Baltimore's overall record during the span is 197-132.

Even for a team with a winning percentage of .599, the chances of going through all those series without being swept are around 0.08%.

There are other stats that also reflect the team's ability to avoid extended slumps. The Orioles haven't lost any of their last 17 series against the AL East, going 12-0-5. They're also one of three teams in the majors, along with Philadelphia and the Chicago Cubs, that haven't had a three-game losing streak this year.

The most recent time Baltimore was swept was May 13-15, 2022, at Detroit. So the streak has now hit two years. Rutschman made his big league debut May 21, 2022, and the Orioles started playing a lot better almost immediately.

The streak is tied for third in major league history, according to information from the Elias Sports Bureau via the team. The 1942-44 St. Louis Cardinals went 124 series without being swept, and the 1906-09 Chicago Cubs went 115. The 1903-05 New York Giants also had a 105-series run.

On 14 occasions, the Orioles have needed a win in a series finale to avoid a sweep. They've pulled it off each time, including a 12-inning win at Washington earlier this month that prevented a two-game sweep, and then Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, when Baltimore didn't score at all between Jordan Westburg's leadoff homer in the first inning and Rutschman's walk-off shot.

"You normally don't win games like that when you leave that many guys on base and have that many scoring opportunities," manager Brandon Hyde said. "But we did because of our pitching today."

The Orioles had baserunners in eight of the nine innings. They had men on second and third with nobody out in the seventh and first and third with one out in the eighth. Both times they failed to score.

None of that mattered when Rutschman delivered his second career walk-off homer.

"We don't make it easy on ourselves sometimes," Hyde said. "We'd like to start cashing in some of these runs and getting some leads and not play so many of these types of games."

Scherzer to 60-day IL; can't return until May 28

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 18:11

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Max Scherzer was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, when the Texas Rangers made a move they initially avoided at the start of the season when there was some hope the three-time Cy Young Award winner might return from offseason back surgery sooner than expected.

When Scherzer made his initial rehab appearance April 24, he appeared to be on track to possibly rejoin the rotation this month. But he was scratched from his next scheduled rehab start six days later because of right thumb soreness that team doctors later identified as a nerve issue that extended to his right triceps.

He had cortisone injections and Botox injections to the shoulder and neck area May 9 to alleviate pain associated with nerve issue.

"It's aggravating to deal with this, but we are talking about your nerves," Scherzer said. "You can be screwing up your arm for the rest of your life. We've got to figure out a way to manage it."

Scherzer played catch in the outfield Wednesday, when the Rangers moved him from the 15-day to 60-day IL to make room on their 40-man roster for the addition of right-hander Shaun Anderson to their active roster.

"We just backed him off some," Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday. "I will say he's feeling better."

Anderson was recalled from Round Rock when Jack Leiter was optioned back to that Triple-A team a day after allowing six runs in 1 2/3 innings against Cleveland in his first home start.

The earliest Scherzer could be activated now is May 28, though it is unclear when he might be ready to pitch this season.

The 39-year-old right-hander had surgery in mid-December to repair a herniated disk in his lower back, and has said that isn't giving him any issues.

Scherzer threw 52 pitches into the third inning of his first rehab start for Round Rock on April 24. He said after that he had been experiencing thumb soreness similar to last year before being sidelined for the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs for the World Series champion Rangers.

The Rangers acquired Scherzer from the Mets in a deadline trade last July after the pitcher agreed to opt in on the final year of his contract for this season at $43.3 million. New York is paying $30.83 million of that to Texas in twice-monthly installments.

After the trade, Scherzer was 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts for Texas, the last in the regular season on Sept. 12 before being sidelined by a muscle strain in his shoulder. He returned to make two starts in the American League Championship Series, then Game 3 of the World Series before exiting after three innings because of his back.

His 3,367 career strikeouts are the most among active pitchers, and he's second on the active list with 214 wins and 448 games started.

Sabalenka cruises through to Italian Open semi-finals

Published in Tennis
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 06:24

World number two Aryna Sabalenka cruised through to the semi-finals of the Italian Open with victory over ninth seed Jelena Ostapenko.

The Belarusian needed just one hour and 13 minutes to dispatch Latvian Ostapenko 6-2 6-4.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka will face Danielle Collins in the last four in Rome after the American 13th seed beat Victoria Azarenka 6-4 6-3.

She could then face world number one Iga Swiatek in the final, a repeat of the Madrid Open final earlier this month which the Polish top seed won in dramatic fashion.

Swiatek takes on world number three Coco Gauff in the other semi-final, making it the first time the top three women's players in the world have reached the semi-finals of a WTA event of 250 level or higher since the 2013 French Open.

"With this amazing atmosphere and with this amazing support - that's why I'm super motivated here and that's why I always say that this is the dream tournament for me to win," said Sabalenka.

"I really enjoy playing here so I don't have to think about being focused. I'm just here enjoying it and doing everything I can to win every point I play no matter what the score. I guess that's the key."

Collins' win over Azarenka means the world number 15 has won 19 of her last 20 matches, with her only loss against Sabalenka in the Madrid Open fourth round.

The 30-year-old, who won her first WTA 1000 title in Miami in March, announced in January she will retire at the end of the season.

In the men's draw, third seed Alexander Zverev powered into the last four with a dominant straight sets win over American Taylor Fritz.

World number five Zverev suffered cuts to his right hand after an early fall but recovered to win 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 29 minutes.

The German, who won the Rome title in 2017, is the highest ranked man left in the tournament and has yet to drop a set.

"I'm extremely happy. Taylor has been one of the best players on clay this year," said Zverev.

"To have a win like that is great for me, especially after the fall. I still have a little bit of pain so once the adrenaline settles I'm going to check out tomorrow what it is, but I'm definitely happy with the win."

Zverev will play Alejandro Tabilo in the last four after the Chilean beat China's Zhizhen Zhang 6-3 6-4.

The 26-year-old, who knocked out Novak Djokovic in the third round, is through to his first semi-final at a Masters 1000 event.

Elsewhere, Former world number one Simona Halep retired hurt in her first round match against McCartney Kessler at the Trophee Clarins Challenger Event in Paris.

Halep, playing her first match on clay in two years, took the first set 7-5 but retired when 3-2 down in the second.

Murray through to next round on injury return

Published in Tennis
Wednesday, 15 May 2024 14:46

Andy Murray progressed to the second round of an ATP Challenger event in Bordeaux after opponent Kyrian Jacquet retired at the start of the second set.

Murray was leading 7-5 2-0 when Frenchman Jacquet, the world number 219, decided he could not continue.

The Briton was making his comeback from ruptured ankle ligaments suffered at the Miami Open in March.

Despite the disappointment of an early finish, the crowd in Bordeaux treated Murray to a rendition of 'Happy Birthday' at the end of the match on his 37th birthday.

He will play Gregoire Barrere in the next round after the Frenchman beat Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-6 6-2.

Murray opted not to have surgery on the ankle injury to reduce recovery time with hopes of playing at the French Open, Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics this summer.

The three-time Grand Slam champion says he does not plan to "play much past this summer" but has not announced where his final tournament will be.

British number three Dan Evans, seeded fifth, is also through to the next round after beating France's Hugo Grenier 6-4 6-4.
