Kentucky hoops lands top-30 senior guard Lewis

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 02 November 2024 13:13

Top-30 senior Acaden Lewis announced his commitment to Kentucky on Saturday, giving Mark Pope and the Wildcats their second impact guard in the 2025 class.

Lewis also had Duke and UConn on his final list, although both programs had already taken top-20 recruits at the point guard position in recent weeks. He took official visits to all three schools, with Kentucky getting the final visit and winning him over.

"I feel like the opportunity is there to start and play a priority role early as their point guards are all leaving," Lewis told ESPN. "Coach Pope and his staff have also made me the biggest priority through their actions. They have been down to visit me and talk basketball an extensive amount. I love the system they run, it's fast-paced and allows guards to make reads and run the team, and allows freedom while still having rules."

While the looming departures of point guards Lamont Butler and Kerr Kriisa played a role in Lewis' decision, it was also his relationship with Pope that led him to Lexington.

"Pope is not only a great basketball mind but a genuine person," Lewis said. "He's impressed me talking basketball and also his philanthropy efforts have impressed and intrigued me as well."

A 6-foot-2 point guard from Washington, D.C. who attends Sidwell Friends (Maryland), Lewis had a breakout high school campaign as a junior, winning Gatorade Player of the Year for Washington, D.C., and then backed that up with Team Durant on the Nike EYBL circuit in the spring and summer. He averaged 16.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists in EYBL play, ranking third on the circuit in assists.

Lewis has a strong feel for the game and plays with poise and pace. The left-handed guard is excellent at finding his spot on the floor to score or create for others, and his range extends well beyond the arc.

Lewis is the third top-50 prospect to commit to Pope and Kentucky in the 2025 class, joining five-star guard Jasper Johnson (No. 13) and in-state center Malachi Moreno (No. 37).

Lewis says he's looking forward to playing in front of the Rupp Arena faithful.

"BBN is absolutely crazy," he said of Kentucky's fan base. "They are in my DMs telling me to come over, and on my visit many of them knew me and even wished me a happy birthday. The community feels real."

Henderson the 4th top-35 player headed to Duke

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 02 November 2024 13:13

Shelton Henderson, one of the top-10 small forwards in the 2025 class, announced his commitment to Duke on Saturday, choosing the Blue Devils over Texas and Louisville.

Henderson is the fourth top-35 commitment for Duke in the senior class, giving the Blue Devils the inside track to the No. 1 recruiting class in the country with the early signing period approaching. He visited Durham a couple of times this fall, taking an official visit in September and then returning for the school's Countdown to Craziness festivities.

"I chose Duke because they believe in me and they have such a great atmosphere and history," Henderson told ESPN. "It was easy to fall in love with their pipeline of sending people to the NBA. I think I could be one of the next to join and they could help me get there."

Duke turned up the heat on Henderson in June after extending a scholarship offer following impressive performances on the Nike EYBL circuit and during USA Basketball trials. Scheyer and assistant coach Jai Lucas made him a priority throughout the summer.

"To be a Blue Devil is going to be such a surreal feeling for me because it has been my dream school since I started watching basketball," Henderson said. "I also think it means that my hard work is paying off and the hours in the gym are showing."

A powerfully built 6-foot-6 small forward from Bellaire High School (Texas), Henderson is ranked No. 30 in the ESPN 100 for the 2025 class. He earned a gold medal with USA Basketball at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup over the summer, averaging 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in six games off the bench. Henderson also averaged 14.8 points and 6.3 rebounds on the EYBL circuit in the spring and 14.7 points and 4.6 rebounds at the Nike Peach Jam in July.

Henderson is a versatile player with a high basketball IQ. He could fit and function anywhere from an off-guard to a power forward. He brings a toughness to the court, especially on the defensive end. He has demonstrated the ability to switch onto small and quicker players while using strength to play post defense. He's a good off-ball cutter and rebounder. What makes him special is that he understands he doesn't have to score to be impactful.

Duke now has four of the top 35 prospects in the senior class, with all four committing in the past three weeks. No. 2-ranked Cameron Boozer and his twin brother, five-star point guard Cayden Boozer, announced for the Blue Devils in mid-October, with four-star forward Nikolas Khamenia following just over one week ago.

The Blue Devils have also been heavily involved with top-five recruit Nate Ament, while elite 2026 forward Miikka Muurinen could be an option if he chooses to reclassify up a year.

Braves reach 2-year, $13M deal with Bummer

ATLANTA -- Left-hander Aaron Bummer agreed Saturday to a two-year, $13 million contract with the Atlanta Braves, who also reached a revised three-year, $30 million deal with All-Star Reynaldo Lopez that guarantees the right-hander an additional $4 million.

Atlanta had a $7.25 million option on Bummer with a $1.25 million buyout as part of a $16 million, five-year contract he signed with the Chicago White Sox. He gets salaries of $3.5 million next season and $9.5 million in 2026.

Lopez agreed last November to a $30 million, three-year contract that called for salaries of $4 million in 2024 and $11 million in the following two seasons and included an $8 million club option for 2027 with a $4 million buyout. His superseding deal has salaries of $8 million in 2025, $14 million in 2026 and $8 million in 2027.

Both will donate 1% of their salary to the Atlanta Braves Foundation.

In addition, the Braves selected the contract of right-hander Domingo Gonzalez from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Bummer, 31, was acquired from the White Sox last November for pitchers Mike Soroka, Jared Shuster and Riley Gowens, along with infielders Nicky Lopez and Braden Shewmake.

Bummer went 4-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 56 appearances, striking out 69 and walking 18 in 55 innings. He is 18-18 with a 3.79 ERA and five saves in 345 relief appearances over eight seasons with the White Sox and Braves.

Lopez, 30, was 8-5 with a 1.99 ERA in 25 starts and one relief appearance, striking out 148 and walking 42 in 135 innings. He is 47-54 with a 3.93 ERA in 122 starts and 145 relief appearances over nine seasons for Washington (2016), the White Sox (2017-23), the Los Angeles Angels (2023), Cleveland (2023) and the Braves.

Sabalenka continues Zheng dominance at WTA Finals

Published in Tennis
Saturday, 02 November 2024 10:28

Sabalenka is the heavy favourite for the title, having replaced Iga Swiatek at the top of the world rankings in October.

She has won four titles this year including last month's Wuhan Open, where she beat Zheng in the final.

However, Zheng has had a successful year of her own, culminating in winning Olympic gold on the Paris clay in July.

The pair were evenly matched in the opening stages before Sabalenka, the heaviest hitter in the women's game, pounced to break for 4-2 and ultimately serve out the set.

Zheng kept pace with her opponent in the second but a poor service game, capped off by a double fault, handed Sabalenka two break points at 4-4.

The first one sailed just long before Sabalenka stepped into a trademark forehand winner to break and ultimately serve out the match.

She hit her only double fault on match point before securing victory on the next point - a recovery so quick that Zheng, standing by the towel box, did not realise the match was over until Sabalenka approached the net.

This year's tournament has a record amount of prize money, with the singles champion set to collect about 4m.

All Blacks edge out England in dramatic finale

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 02 November 2024 10:49

There had been rumours that England planned a response to the haka spread before kick-off, with off-duty England prop Joe Marler - whose said on Monday that the pre-match challenge should be "binned" - on the sidelines during the teams warm-up.

The rumours proved true. To the delight of the home crowd, captain Jamie George led his side up to halfway - the limit of what is allowed - to face the All Blacks. The visitors responded in kind, advancing to within five metres of England, as the two teams stared into the whites of each other's eyes.

England's defence initially to match that coordination and intent. After nine minutes, on their first real attack, New Zealand sliced through all too easily.

Flanker Wallace Sititi drew Tommy Freeman and George Furbank on the short side before flipping an offload to Tele'a, who cruised around covering prop Ellis Genge and into the corner.

New Zealand's second try - on 27 minutes - was another eyesore for new England defence coach Joe El-Abd.

Beauden Barrett jagged blind, leaving England short-staffed before Jordan cut back on a scissors angle to canter past Genge, exposed once more against pace.

That body blow moved the All Blacks 14-6 clear and the game already looked perilously close to slipping into southern hemisphere hands.

But England hung tough. Their scrum, under pressure in the summer, was a source of strength, earning penalties and a solid supply of ball. They imposed themselves in contact, with Chandler Cunningham-South landing a shuddering hit on Tupou Vaa'i before exhorting more noise from the stands.

And New Zealand's indiscipline, frequently hitting players without the ball on the gain-line, allowed them a route back into the game with another two Smith penalties.

New Zealand still bristled with danger when afforded space. The superb Sititi surged through broken field and almost laid on a third try just before half-time, with Vaa'i just unable to reel in his pass with the line beckoning.

The All Blacks though have had a habit of fading out of games in the Rugby Championship this year, and a prime piece of pickpocketing from Smith put them on the back foot early in the second half.

The England fly-half grabbed Cortez Ratima's sluggish pass, sprinted clear and the ball was smuggled out to Feyi-Waboso who cantered in for 19-14.

Every tackle, turnover and successful dual was being celebrated long, loud and together by England's players as they zeroed in on a first home win over New Zealand in 12 years.

The biggest cheer though was reserved for referee Angus Gardner, whose voice was broadcast NFL-style over the stadium speakers - a new innovation for this autumn - as he reviewed and ruled out a score by Beauden Barrett for Caleb Clarke's knock-on.

However, England ultimately could not keep the visitors at bay.

The replacement front row - Fin Baxter, Theo Dan and Dan Cole - could not maintain their grip on the scrum and the penalty count ticked up against the home side.

Finally Tele'a, forced back into the fray after an injury to Beauden Barrett, pirouetted through Ford's tackle and held off Harry Randall to dot down.

There was still time for more drama, but not another twist in the scoreline, as Ford planted a long, but straight penalty shot against the post and then clipped a last-gasp drop-goal wide.

In England's last outing at Twickenham back in March, Smith had landed a final-play drop-goal from a similar spot to defeat Grand Slam-chasing Ireland.

This time, they could not muster the same accuracy and were left with a vastly different feeling as they tasted narrow and bitter defeat once again.

England: Furbank; Feyi-Waboso, Slade, Lawrence, Freeman; M Smith, Spencer; Genge, George (capt), Stuart; Itoje, Martin; Cunningham-South, T Curry, Earl.

Replacements: Dan, Baxter, Cole, Isiekwe, B Curry, Dombrandt, Randall, Ford.

New Zealand: Jordan; Tele'a, Ioane, J Barrett, Clarke; B Barrett, Ratima; Williams, Taylor, Lomax, S Barrett (capt), Vaa'i, Sititi, Cane, Savea.

Replacements: Aumua, Tu'ungafasi, Tosi, Tuipulotu, Finau, Roigard, Lienart-Brown, McKenzie.

Isles place Barzal on long-term IR, Pelech on IR

The New York Islanders placed forward Mathew Barzal on long-term injured reserve and defenseman Adam Pelech on IR on Saturday due to their respective upper-body injuries.

Barzal will be required to miss at least 10 games and 24 calendar days after being placed on long-term injured reserve.

"It [stinks], and it's not ideal," forward Bo Horvat said Friday. "But again, guys have gone down in the past and the other guys have stepped up, and that's going to be the exact same thing going forward. We've got the guys in here to do it, and we have to get it done."

Barzal, 27, last played Wednesday when he led all New York forwards with 22:46 of ice time in a 2-0 loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He has two goals and three assists through 10 games this season, his ninth with the Islanders. Barzal has 447 points (130 goals, 317 assists) in 510 games since the Islanders drafted him with the 16th overall pick in 2015.

Pelech, 30, was hit in the face with a puck in New York's 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

He has four assists in 11 games this season and 144 points (26 goals, 118 assists) in 511 career games since being selected by the Islanders in third round of the 2012 NHL draft.

Also Saturday, the Islanders recalled defensemen Samuel Bolduc and Grant Hutton from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League.

Bolduc, 23, has scored one goal and set up four others in nine games, and Hutton, 29, has two assists in the same stretch for Bridgeport.

Salah stunner in comeback win sends L'pool top

A sensational trademark strike from Mohamed Salah earned Liverpool a 2-1 comeback victory over Brighton on Saturday, a win that moved Arne Slot's team two points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Brighton started brightly on an Anfield ground where they have a good recent record, taking a deserved lead in the 14th minute after Turkey international Ferdi Kadioglu rifled a stunning effort into the far corner.

Liverpool struggled to create any openings of note in the first half but came flying out the traps after the break, dragging themselves level in the 69th minute through Cody Gakpo, before Salah completed the turnaround three minutes later.

With their two main title rivals, Arsenal and Manchester City, both losing, Liverpool overtook the champions to climb to the summit, six clear of Nottingham Forest in third and seven ahead of Arsenal.

Brighton have become Liverpool's Premier League nemesis in recent years, with Slot's side having won two of their last eight meetings coming into Saturday's clash.

Outperforming expectations again this season, Brighton showed no fear early on at Anfield, having the better of the opening exchanges.

A superb solo run and shot from Darwin Núñez lifted the home crowd, but Kadioglu's first-ever Premier League goal silenced the famous Kop end, a sensational strike for a player who normally operates as a left-back.

A fine stop from Caoimhín Kelleher in the much busier Liverpool goal to deny Georginio Rutter kept Brighton from extending their first-half lead, while the hosts could barely string two passes together.

Liverpool were much improved after the break, with Virgil van Dijk and Salah wasting golden opportunities to level early in the second half.

Brighton could not cope with wave after wave of Liverpool attacks, with Gakpo's cross that evaded everyone and ended up in the net breaking their resistance.

The goal that won it and nearly lifted the roof off Anfield, however, is the type of shot Liverpool supporters have seen many times before, as Salah cut inside onto his left foot and curled a sumptuous strike into the net.

The Egyptian is now outright eighth in the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer list, with his goals remaining as crucial as ever to Liverpool's title charge.

City lose unbeaten run in shock Bournemouth loss

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 02 November 2024 11:05

Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson got on the scoresheet as the hosts held on for a stunning 2-1 victory over champions Manchester City on Saturday, ending the visitors' unbeaten streak in the Premier League at 32 games.

The loss dropped Pep Guardiola's City --who had not lost in the league since a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Dec. 6, 2023 -- to second in the table with 23 points after 10 matches, two points behind Liverpool.

Andoni Iraola's side climbed to eighth on 15 points with the first victory over City in the club's history.

Bournemouth were rewarded for their strong start with Semenyo's ninth-minute goal. Milos Kerkez superbly worked the ball up the left side to the byline before sending a low cross to Semenyo, who turned and beat goalkeeper Éderson.

Evanilson doubled the lead in the 64th when he latched onto Kerkez's cross and slotted home.

City, who have been struggling with injuries to key players, created a nervy finish after pulling a goal back in the 82nd minute when Josko Gvardiol leapt to meet Ilkay Gündogan's cross, his looping header pushed in off the bar by Mark Travers.

That came two minutes after City's scoring machine Erling Haaland had his side's first shot on target and the visitors kept the pressure on Travers and Bournemouth's defence in the dying minutes.

Travers made a terrific save in added time to help secure Bournemouth's win when he stopped Haaland's last-gasp header from close range. The striker then fired his own rebound off the post.

"We knew we couldn't match the intensity," said Guardiola. "We have talked about it. It was an open game. We had chances at the end but I congratulate Bournemouth for the victory."

City have been hampered by a long list of injuries, although winger Jérémy Doku made a surprise return and the second-half substitute instantly made his presence felt.

Neither captain Kyle Walker nor key midfielder Kevin de Bruyne were expected to play either but the former started and the latter returned to the bench.

Phil Foden also had a decent chance for City but dragged his shot wide of the net in the second half.

Haaland went down after a challenge from Lewis Cook just before the hour but VAR determined it was a fair tackle. The Norwegian was on the ground for several minutes receiving treatment before continuing but could not find the net.

Pats QB Maye clears protocol, will start vs. Titans

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 02 November 2024 11:43

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has cleared concussion protocol and will start Sunday's road game against the Tennessee Titans, the team announced Saturday.

Maye entered concussion protocol in the second quarter of the Patriots' 25-22 win over the Jets last Sunday. He was a limited participant in practices Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft, Maye was named the Patriots' starter in Week 6 after veteran Jacoby Brissett opened the year as the top quarterback. Maye has helped spark what had been a stagnant offense, going 53-of-84 for 564 yards, with five touchdowns and two interceptions. He has added 13 rushes for 114 yards and one touchdown.

On an 18-yard scramble in the first quarter last week, Maye was about to slide at the end of the run when Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood's helmet made contact with the back of Maye's helmet. Maye was slow to get up but remained in the game for four more plays.

After Maye came to the sideline following a punt, the NFL's independent spotter for concussions asked for Maye to be evaluated, according to coach Jerod Mayo. Brissett took over the rest of the game and helped lead the team to a comeback win, with Mayo saying Maye told him at halftime that he had hoped to return in the second half.

Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said Thursday that the Patriots don't want to limit Maye's running, but stressed awareness to him when he does take off.

"You hate to take that away from a player. That's a strength of his, the ability to move out of the pocket," Van Pelt said. "The one thing we talked about was being safe in the slide. Often times you get into space and feel like you're clean and you can go feet first, which is what we coach in open space. But you never know what's coming behind. So the quarterbacks that avoid injury often times will find a soft place by going head first and getting down in that regard.

"It's something we continue to work with, with him -- understanding of what's around you in those situations. But ultimately we go into every game asking him to protect the ball and protect himself. That goes for every quarterback."

In facing the Titans (1-6), the Patriots (2-6) are looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since October 2022.

Sources: Cubs' Bellinger opts in for next season

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 02 November 2024 12:01

CHICAGO -- Cubs infielder/outfielder Cody Bellinger is staying in Chicago after opting into his contract for 2025, sources tell ESPN.

Bellinger, 29, could have become a free agent this winter after signing a three-year, $90 million deal with the Cubs before last season, which included separate opt-out clauses after the 2024 and 2025 seasons, respectively. He'll be paid $27.5 million next year (with a $2.5 million buyout) and then faces the same decision after next season.

Bellinger had an OPS+ of 111 last season, down from 139 in 2023, his first with the Cubs. He hit 18 home runs in 2024 after hitting 26 the previous season. His numbers don't compare to those from his early years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he won the NL MVP in 2019, but he's still a valuable left-handed bat in the Cubs' lineup. He has also become a killer against left-handed pitching, hitting .298 off lefties in 2024 after hitting .337 off them in 2023.

Bellinger started the year in center field but finished it in right because of the emergence of prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, who has Gold Glove ability in the outfield. Bellinger can also play first base, but rookie Michael Busch established himself at that position, improving on defense throughout the season. As the Cubs are currently constituted, Bellinger would remain in right field, keeping Seiya Suzuki at DH after he played below-average defense until Bellinger took over.

Without a trade, the Cubs do not have much flexibility within their position player group which helped the team to back-to-back 83-win seasons. The organization is counting on several players -- such as Crow-Armstrong and Busch -- to take the next steps in their careers while also hoping others exceed expectations. Bellinger might be included in that group after his OPS dropped to just .751 last year, though Wrigley Field played as a pitcher-friendly park in 2024.
