England have history with the haka.
Before a Test at Old Trafford in 1997, home hooker Richard Cockerill stood nose-to-nose with opposite number Norm Hewitt, while England formed an arrowhead shape to receive the haka before beating the All Blacks in the 2019 Rugby World Cup semi-final.
In 2005, British and Irish Lions captain Brian O'Driscoll tore up some grass, throwing the blades in the air in response to the haka in the first Test. Wales also stared down the haka in 2008, refusing to turn first and causing a stand-off.
While both the Lions and Wales were well beaten, France's advance on the haka preceded a famous 20-18 quarter-final win at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
Rules are now in place preventing either team advancing close to the other. However, it has not stopped the controversy.
South Africa apologised earlier this year after the haka was interrupted by fireworks, music and a pre-match fly-past, saying it was the result of human error on timings rather than a deliberate slight.
Robertson described England's 2019 response as "awesome".
"It is the respect thing isn't it," he said.
"There was a clear meaning behind it and was respectfully done. That's great. That's what we are all about."
Imran Khwaja will continue as the ICC's deputy chair after he was reappointed for another tenure. His new stint will begin on December 1, 2024, the day BCCI secretary Jay Shah begins his tenure as ICC chair.
Khwaja, who was first elected to the ICC Board in 2008, has been the deputy chair since 2017. In that time, he has also held the position of interim chair, stepping in after Shashank Manohar's term ended in July 2020. Later that year, Khwaja contested a leadership election for the top post against Greg Barclay, the latter winning after two rounds of voting were needed.
In July this year, at the ICC annual general meeting in Colombo, Khwaja was re-elected as one of three Associate member directors to sit on the ICC Board.
In August this year, Shah was appointed chairperson unopposed, replacing Barclay, served two of his three terms. At 35, Shah is the youngest to have been the head of the ICC and was also the fifth Indian to hold the position, after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Manohar.
Jamie Smith joins England's senior ranks with two-year ECB contract
Smith, 24, was one of the breakout stars of England's home Test summer, scoring a maiden Test hundred against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford, before being named as the PCA's Young Player of the Year at their annual end-of-season awards dinner.
Though his opportunities in white-ball cricket have so far been limited by his workload, Smith showed glimpses of his potential in the recent home ODI series against Australia, and though he is due to miss the Test tour of New Zealand as he goes on paternity leave, he looks set to be a central figure in England's plans for their white-ball tour of India in January and the subsequent Champions Trophy.
Buttler's deal, meanwhile, is a show of faith in England's white-ball captain despite an absence from professional cricket that has now extended to five months as he recovers from a persistent calf injury. It comes on the same day that his long association with Rajasthan Royals was ended by his omission from their list of retained players for the 2025 IPL.
In addition to Smith, four other players have signed their first central contracts: Shoaib Bashir, Phil Salt, Olly Stone and Will Jacks, who was the notable omission from England's plans last time around. Three further players have been handed development contracts, including two new additions in Jacob Bethell and Josh Hull, and John Turner, the fast bowler who could make his England debut in the Caribbean this week.
Seven players have been cut from England's list for 2024-35, including Moeen Ali, Dawid Malan and James Anderson, who have retired from international cricket, and the fast bowlers Matthew Fisher and Saqib Mahmood, who had been on development contracts after making their Test debuts in the Caribbean in 2022.
The most notable absentees, however, are Ollie Robinson and Ben Foakes, the Test wicketkeeper who made way for his Surrey team-mate Smith in the summer. Both men last featured on the tour of India in February, and their hopes of a recall in the current regime would now appear to be over.
"The strength and depth of talent across England Men's red and white-ball cricket is clear in the quality of players who are centrally contracted," Rob Key, England men's managing director, said. "These contracts reward the players we believe will play an important role for our England Men's teams. Both our captains, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, have signed two-year central contracts that showcase the commitment of all the players to prioritise playing for their country.
"I want to congratulate all the players who have signed new central contracts ahead of what is set to be an exciting period for England Men's cricket."
LSG wanted to retain 'players who have a mindset to win'
Pooran was an "automatic choice" as the team's top retention and the decision to keep him took "two minutes" according to Goenka. "We had a very simple mindset to go in with players who have a mindset to win, who put the team before their personal goals and aspirations," he said. "And we wanted to retain as much core as possible within our available purse. We had a strong bowling unit, that's why we went with three bowlers [Bishnoi, Mayank and Mohsin] from the previous season and all Indians. Pooran was a no-brainer. Ayush [Badoni] has done well for us at No. 6 and No. 7."
While Rahul was LSG's top-scorer in IPL 2024 with 520 runs at a strike rate of 136, Pooran's 499 runs came at a strike rate of 178.
Mayank made his IPL debut in 2024 but played only four matches before he was ruled out by injury. He made a strong impression in that time with his 150kph speeds and picked up two Player of the Match awards.
Mohsin and Bishnoi picked up only 10 wickets apiece in IPL 2024, while Badoni scored only 235 runs in the lower-middle order. But with Mohsin only 26 years old, and Bishnoi and Badoni both 24, LSG view them as long-term prospects.
With five players retained, including two uncapped players, at a total cost of INR 51 crore, LSG have INR 69 crore remaining to spend at the mega auction. They have one right-to-match option to use if they want to buy back one of their capped players.
Sources: Sixers eye Embiid debut amid progress
Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid has completed multiple 5-on-5 scrimmages in recent days as he progresses toward a season debut, sources told ESPN.
Embiid, who has not played this season due to what the team has called left knee management, is expected to work out Thursday and Friday before the team determines his status for Saturday against the Memphis Grizzlies and beyond.
The 76ers (1-3) play the Grizzlies at home on Saturday before a three-game road trip out West next week in Phoenix on Monday, against the LA Clippers on Wednesday and versus the Lakers on Friday.
The NBA fined the 76ers $100,000 for public statements around Embiid's health status Tuesday. Their investigation showed that the Sixers did not violate player participation policy with Embiid's missed games but did so with the public comments that did not properly reflect his health issues with his knee.
In its statement, the league cited comments made by president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and coach Nick Nurse that were "inconsistent with Joel Embiid's health status and in violation of NBA rules."
The NBA said it has confirmed that Embiid has been unable to play so far this season because of a left knee condition.
Neither Embiid nor free agent acquisition Paul George has played for Philadelphia this season. George has been dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee.
12 arrested in celebrations after Dodgers' WS win
A dozen arrests were reported by Los Angeles police early Thursday after crowds took to the streets following the Dodgers' World Series win.
Video showed some people throwing objects at police in Los Angeles as sirens blared and officers told them to leave the area after the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in Game 5 in New York. A bus was set on fire, and some in the crowd were seen breaking into stores.
There were some "unruly, and at times violent and hostile celebrations," with several acts of vandalism, including the burning of a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus, Los Angeles police spokesperson Officer Drake Madison said in an email.
"Metro is disappointed and angered by the senseless act of vandalism on one of our buses following the Dodgers World Series Win earlier this evening," the transportation agency said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times.
Arrests were on charges such as failure to disperse, receiving stolen property and commercial burglary, Madison said.
There were also several instances of street takeovers downtown and police used less-lethal munitions to control several hostile and violent crowds, Madison said. In the coming days, detectives will attempt to identify those responsible for crimes, he said.
Other video showed revelers standing on top of a bus waving a Dodgers banner and people leaving a boarded-up store with sneakers. It wasn't known if anyone was hurt.
The Dodgers plan to commemorate their World Series championship Friday with a downtown parade followed by a celebration at Dodger Stadium. The team said Wednesday that, because of logistics, traffic and timing, fans won't be able to attend both events.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Hudson retires, walking off with 2nd Series ring
Moments after winning his second World Series title, Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Daniel Hudson announced his retirement from baseball.
"This was the only reason I came back -- to go out on top," Hudson told reporters Wednesday night. "And that's what's happening."
Hudson pitched in a pair of World Series games against the New York Yankees, striking out two during the Dodgers' Game 3 win but taking the loss after allowing four runs in Game 4.
It was a rebounding farewell season for the 37-year-old Hudson, who had a 3.00 ERA over 65 appearances -- his most since 2019 -- after signing a minor league contract with the Dodgers in December and making the major league roster before Opening Day.
Hudson pitched for seven teams over a 16-year major league career, finishing with a 65-45 record, a 3.74 ERA and 817 strikeouts.
He added the 2024 title to the 2019 World Series he won with the Washington Nationals.
Gearing up for the ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge: a recap of the Asia and Oceania Hopes Weeks
The 2024 ITTF Oceania Hopes Week & Challenge, held from 9-13 September, took place in Melbourne at the LOOPS Table Tennis Club, hosted by respected Coach Massimo Costantini, and was very well received by all players and coaches.
The participation of 12 female and 10 male athletes along with 8 male coaches and 7 female coaches from the 3 Member AssociationsAustralia, New Zealand, and Tahitimade the activity truly gender-balanced. The talent identification program goes beyond basic training, aiming to transform raw potential into developed skill. The training camp was scheduled into 2 sessions each day, in the morning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and in the afternoon from 2:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. The players and coaches showed a lot of engagement during these 4 days of training.
Conducting a Continental Hopes activity is always something special. The one I did in Oceania confirmed the statement above. Interesting players, great coaches, interactions, excellent organization, and at last good quality of play. A very instructive experience as Hopes activity usually is, said Coach Massimo.
The Challenge winners were Alice Qinle Xia from Australia, and Eli Ho from New Zealand, who will meet up with their fellow Hopes from around the world for a week of training and competition in Asuncion.
In addition, two female coachesbeneficiaries of the ITTF My Gender. My Strength. projectattended ITTF Oceania Hopes Week & Challenge: Harvi Yee from Fiji and Hyojoo Lee from New Zealand.
It was an exciting experience for me, as this is my first time attending the ITTF Oceania Hopes Week and Challenge. Seeing these young, energetic, adorable players was really inspiring. It was a great learning opportunity, and Im so happy to take back the learning to my country and help develop my association. The message from Coach Max was, plan well for the future. Im so thankful for this opportunity given to me through the ITTF My Gender. My Strength project, said Harvi, coach and MGMS beneficiary from Fiji.
Immediately afterward, from 14-19 September at the Paralympic Federation Hall in Amman, Jordan, the 2024 ITTF Asia Hopes Week & Challenge was held, bringing together 31 young players from 12 countries in a showcase of table tennis talent and potential. This prestigious event served as a crucial stepping stone in developing young athletes from across the region, with 16 boys and 15 girls participating under the watchful eyes of ITTF Expert Hisham Ismail from Egypt.
The event spanned six days, with the first five devoted to intensive training sessions, scheduled twice daily from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The final day was reserved for the highly anticipated Challenge, where players demonstrated the skills and techniques honed during the week.
Twelve member Associations were represented at the event, including Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka, reflecting the diversity and depth of talent within the region. The event was also complemented by physical training sessions and a dedicated coach education program, emphasizing holistic athlete development.
The standard of play for the players in the camp was strong, with very good coaches representing 12 countries, pushing all of their efforts for their players. Thanks to all the coaches and players for their participation, commitment, and for giving all of their efforts during the camp and the challenge, said Hisham Ismail, the Head Coach of the activity.
The Paralympic Federation Hall provided a large venue for training and practice, equipped with 16 ITTF-approved tables. A separate hall was dedicated to physical training, ensuring athletes could work on both their technical and physical conditioning. The venue also housed a meeting room used for coach education sessions, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the weeks activities.
This combination of quality facilities, a talented group of athletes and coaches, and expert coaching created a productive environment where young talent flourished. Many players showed significant promise, and as Coach Ismail noted, the camp offered a glimpse into the future of Asian table tennis.
In addition to the appointed Head Coach, two Asian female coaches, Nabita Shreshta from Nepal and Fatemeh Mohaghegh from Iran both beneficiaries of the ITTF My Gender. My Strength. project attended the activity with the aim of upskilling and advancing their knowledge and skills by taking an active part in the activity and assisting the Head Coach where and when applicable.
With the stage set, we are looking forward to a full week of hard training, friendly exchanges, and an exciting Challenge tournament at the 2024 ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge in Asuncion!
It is understood that Bumrah doesn't have an injury, and it's not known yet if the team management wanted to rest him or Bumrah himself wanted to be rested.
"I think he [Bumrah] is just done his preparations," Gambhir said on Thursday, "I think we know how the weather is in Mumbai, so obviously he needs to conserve his energy as well. So he's done his bowling, he's prepared really well, and he's fine. That's why he's a senior player, he knows how much he needs to prepare for the Test match."
"In the two Test matches that he's bowled [against New Zealand] around 20-25 overs. So he hasn't bowled a lot," Nayar said on Wednesday. "Yes, there will always be a thought process about his workload. Also we played two games that we've not had five-day cricket, it's more three, three-and-a-half. So he's got ample rest. But Booms is very important to us and his workload will always be something on our mind."
Fast bowlers are unlikely to get a lot of assistance from the Mumbai pitch that has been prepared. The red soil should ensure there is good bounce and the early-morning moisture combined with the new ball might provide a small window for them to do a little damage, but largely it is the spinners to whom both teams will be turning to. India have already gone down 2-0, their first series defeat at home in 12 years, making the Test something of a dead rubber, although there are WTC points at stake. India are on top of the WTC table and fighting for a spot in the final at Lord's in June 2025.
