121-loss White Sox turn to Venable, sources say

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 29 October 2024 22:11

The Chicago White Sox are hiring Texas Rangers coach Will Venable to be their next manager, sources familiar with the situation confirmed to ESPN.

Venable, 42, played nine years in the big leagues before transitioning to an off-the-field role as a special assistant with the Chicago Cubs in 2017, and then as a base coach for them from 2018-20. He was Boston's bench coach in 2021 before being hired by Texas, where he has served as associate manager next to Bruce Bochy for the past two seasons.

The majority of Venable's playing career was spent in San Diego before he was traded to the Rangers in 2015. He played for the Dodgers in 2016 before retiring.

Venable hit .249 with 81 career home runs in 967 games, playing exclusively in the outfield.

Venable replaces interim manager Grady Sizemore, who was also a candidate for the permanent job. The White Sox fired former manager Pedro Grifol in August as the team broke a modern day record for losses with 121 this past season.

The White Sox have been on a steady decline since winning the division in 2021. A 101-loss season in 2022 cost former general manager Rick Hahn and team president Kenny Williams their jobs, as longtime owner Jerry Reinsdorf hired former White Sox player Chris Getz to head the team's baseball department.

In the past year, Getz turned over the front office and has now hired his first manager, a respected longtime player and coach.

Venable becomes the 42nd manager in franchise history. He was chosen from a long list of candidates that included Guardians bench coach Craig Albernaz, Padres special assistant A.J. Ellis, Dodgers first-base coach Clayton McCollough and Sizemore, who was popular with players during his short interim stint.

MLB.com first reported Venable's expected hiring. An announcement is expected before the GM meetings which begin next Tuesday.

Two WS fans ejected for prying ball from Betts

NEW YORK -- Two fans at Yankee Stadium were ejected from Game 4 of the World Series after one pried a foul ball out of the glove of Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts on Tuesday night.

A league spokesperson told The Athletic that the fan who pulled the ball from Betts' glove and the man sitting next to him were ejected after the incident.

Betts leaped at the wall in foul territory and initially caught Gleyber Torres' popup in the first inning, but a fan in the first row with a gray Yankees' road jersey grabbed Betts' glove with both hands and pulled the ball out. Torres was immediately called out on fan interference.

The Yankees went on to win the game 11-4 and force a Game 5, which will be played at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night. The Dodgers lead the series 3-1.

It was the second time Torres had an at-bat impacted by fan interference this World Series. With two outs in the ninth inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium, Torres hit a fly ball to left field, and a fan reached over and caught the ball. Torres was awarded a double.

The Dodgers, who are one win away from their second title in five years, held a 2-0 lead on Freddie Freeman's two-run homer in the top of the first off Luis Gil at the time the incident occurred.

Yanks stay alive, break out with 3 HRs in G4 rout

NEW YORK -- To extend their season another day, the New York Yankees needed that big, momentum-shifting hit that eluded them over the first three games of the World Series. They got it on the brink of elimination Tuesday night in Game 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Anthony Volpe belted a go-ahead grand slam in the third inning, Austin Wells added a solo shot three innings later and Gleyber Torres put the finishing touches on an 11-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a three-run home run in the eighth inning as the Yankees avoided elimination for at least one night.

Volpe's breakthrough blast came on a first-pitch slider from Daniel Hudson, the second reliever the Dodgers deployed for their scheduled bullpen day, with two outs and Los Angeles leading 2-1. The grand slam, which landed a few rows beyond the wall in left field, electrified a sellout crowd that had been on edge after Freddie Freeman's two-run home run in the first inning.

It was Volpe's first career grand slam and the first by a Yankee since Tino Martinez in Game 1 of the 1998 World Series against the San Diego Padres. Volpe, at 23 years and 184 days old, became the youngest Yankee with a grand slam in the World Series since Mickey Mantle in 1953.

"I was hustling," Volpe said. "I didn't know I got it. And then I blacked out."

It was not a promising start for the Yankees. Freeman's home run -- a laser over the short porch in right field off starter Luis Gil that extended the first baseman's home run streak in the World Series to a record six games -- immediately deflated the crowd. It put the Yankees, who hadn't led since Freeman's walk-off grand slam in Game 1, in an early hole for the third straight game. But the Dodgers' reliever carousel could not hold the Yankees down.

"I don't think anyone expected those guys to lay down," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "We had some at-bats that I thought could have been better, but we knew it was a bullpen game. As far as outcomes, to have six guys in your 'pen that are feeling good, rested, I feel good about that."

Five Yankees relievers, meanwhile, were not charged with a run over the game's final five innings. Tim Hill, Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr., Luke Weaver and Tim Mayza held the Dodgers without a hit after the fifth inning. It was the formula the Yankees had been seeking in this series. It saved their season Tuesday.

Said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, "Good night for us and we get another opportunity tomorrow."

Bulls say Ball sprained wrist in win, to miss time

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 29 October 2024 20:08

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball sprained his right wrist in the first quarter of Monday night's win at Memphis and will be reevaluated in 10 days, the team announced Tuesday.

Ball played through the injury to collect six points and six assists while logging a season-high 18 minutes in Chicago's 126-123 victory.

Ball, 27, has appeared in three games this season, his first NBA action since January 2022 after undergoing multiple surgeries on his left knee.

The Bulls do not believe the wrist injury will linger long term, but want to see how Ball responds over the next week.

Part of the team's scheduled maintenance for Ball this season includes not playing him in back-to-backs.

Ball said the knee has felt good as he returns to game action for the first time in more than 2 years. He said last week that he has been able to take the court without thinking about the knee.

Ball averaged 4.7 points, 3.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 15.7 minutes in his first three games this season.

Sources: Warriors benching forward Kuminga

Published in Basketball

The Golden State Warriors are moving forward Jonathan Kuminga to the bench for Tuesday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans, sources told ESPN.

The benching of Kuminga is an intriguing development in a fourth season when no contract extension was complete for both sides, and team officials have discussed setting him up to take the next step.

The Warriors are expected to start Brandin Podziemski, Buddy Hield, Moses Moody, Draymond Green and Trayce Jackson-Davis, sources said.

Golden State is without Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins and De'Anthony Melton on Tuesday night.

Shimron Hetmyer has been handed a recall to West Indies' ODI squad for the three-match series against England, which starts in Antigua on Thursday. Hetmyer replaces Alick Athanaze in the squad as the only change from the touring group that has just returned from Sri Lanka.

Hetmyer last played ODIs in December 2023, when he was part of the team that beat England 2-1. He missed the Sri Lanka tour for personal reasons, having recently finished fifth on the run-scorers' list at the CPL.

Athanaze had been one of the incumbent openers, but lost his spot to Evin Lewis for the third ODI against Sri Lanka, in Pallekele. Lewis, making his first ODI appearance in more than three years, made an unbeaten 102 from 61 balls as West Indies finished the series with a consolation win on DLS.

Shai Hope will captain the group, which also includes 17-year-old batting prodigy Jewel Andrew, who made his debut at the end of the Sri Lanka series.

England have already arrived in the Caribbean for their third limited-overs tour since 2022. They will be led during the ODI leg by Liam Livingstone, with Jos Buttler continuing his rehab following a calf injury that has kept him out since July.

"Playing against England always provides a new challenge and reignites a rivalry that the players and the people of the Caribbean are eager for," Daren Sammy, West Indies head coach, said. "Somehow, we West Indies always find a way to raise our game when we face England.

"This rivalry goes back for decades, and after defeating them last year at home for the first time in a long time in an ODI series, we're ready to face the challenge of a strong England squad again. It's always special to play at home, where the local support brings energy and passion to every match. With our sights set on qualifying for the ICC Men's World Cup in 2027, we've selected a balanced squad that will no doubt push and compete with one of the best teams in the world."

Antigua's Sir Vivian Richards Stadium will host the first two ODIs, before the series moves on to Barbados. It will be followed by five T20Is, played at the Kensington Oval and the Daren Sammy National Stadium in St Lucia.

West Indies ODI squad: Shai Hope (capt), Jewel Andrew, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh Jr

Jets' Rodgers finds 'fountain of youth' in new drink

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 29 October 2024 18:02

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes he has discovered a "little fountain of youth," and it's nothing to sneeze at. Or maybe it is.

Rodgers said he is drinking cayenne pepper and water, suggested to him by teammate Thomas Morstead. Rodgers, dealing with hamstring, knee and ankle injuries throughout the season, said he started drinking it before the Jets' Week 8 game and has continued this week in preparation for Thursday night against the Houston Texans at MetLife Stadium.

It's a short week, which means most players are battling aching bodies, but Rodgers, 40, said his feels great.

Rodgers said he is not sure if it is all due to his new elixir, but he has made it part of his rehab regimen. Cayenne pepper and water can have several health benefits, including pain relief, according to various medical journals.

"I'm taking care of myself non-stop," said Rodgers, adding that he receives treatment at the facility and later at home.

His age and diminished mobility were called into question by Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, who told reporters after New England's 25-22 victory on Sunday: "Hall of Fame quarterback. Hate to see him go out that way... He definitely don't look the same. ... S---, I could run him down and catch him. He don't look mobile at all."

Rodgers said he wasn't aware of the comments.

"He's probably right," Rodgers said. "Yeah, I was hurting, but I feel better today."

That's some pretty quick healing.

"T-Mo gave me a little fountain of youth," he said of Morstead. "He said he's been taking it for a while -- all legal, of course. ... [Maybe] that's why I've been feeling a little bit better."

The Jets (2-6), losers of five straight, need an improved Rodgers to salvage the second half of their season. in a postgame speech to the team Sunday, he expressed a sense of urgency with "a cool head," safety Isaiah Oliver said, adding, "He was still able to express that things need to get better and things need to change, and that we have to do it together. There's no time for pointing fingers."

The four-time MVP admitted he's not playing up to his expectations, but he sounded optimistic about Thursday night. He said Godchaux probably got the wrong impression about him because he didn't have to flee the pocket that often, making it appear as if his mobility was compromised.

"That was probably part of it, but I expect to be able to do a lot more this week," Rodgers said. "I'll be under center and, hopefully, back to my faster-than-Godchaux speed."

Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich acknowledged that Rodgers hasn't been 100% this season, but he added that the postgame checkup Monday "was one of his better evaluations. So, from that standpoint, we're very fortunate."

Asked if he'd consider resting the future Hall of Famer for a week or two, Ulbrich said, "Not at this point."

This hasn't been a vintage Rodgers season. He's ranked 23rd in Total QBR (50.4), well below his career average (67.2). With seven interceptions, he is on pace for a career high.

"Yeah, not as good as I would've hoped," he said of his season. "I've got to play better.

"I just have to be more efficient, not turn the ball over too many times. Interceptions can be misleading at times, but I've definitely had my share of poor throws."

Rodgers claimed his surgically repaired Achilles isn't a factor at all, but he has missed some practice time due to his other leg injuries.

Mobility used to be one of Rodgers' "super powers," according to Ulbrich, who said they've placed an emphasis this week on "really being in rhythm and listening to your feet, and trust your eyes, and let it rip. So the right things are being emphasized -- they are -- and I'm excited to see some growth in that way."

Rodgers played his best game of the season on a Thursday night, a Week 3 win over the Patriots in which he passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns. The short week didn't bother him at all.

"I don't know what it is about these Thursdays," he said, "but I made it to the game without any issues and I feel much better."

Report: Warrant request made for Lions' Williams

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 29 October 2024 18:02

The Wayne County Prosecutor's office is reviewing a warrant request for the arrest of Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams on a concealed weapon charge, WXYZ-TV in Detroit reported Tuesday.

The warrant request on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle was issued late last week by the Detroit Police Department, stemming from a traffic stop on Oct. 8.

The warrant request was made after an internal affairs investigation was opened after WXYZ-TV asked the police department about why Williams wasn't taken into custody.

"On October 8, my clients were pulled over for an alleged traffic violation. During the course of the stop, my clients were both cooperative and respectful with the police officers. With the two pistols that were found in the vehicle, they were both properly registered and the driver in the vehicle had the proper credentials to carry them. We have cooperated with law enforcement and will continue to do so," Williams' attorney, Todd Flood, said in a statement released to WXYZ-TV.

According to the report, Williams was riding as a passenger in a vehicle driven by his brother when they were stopped after midnight. Police asked Williams' brother if there were any weapons in the vehicle, and he said there were two guns -- one in the back seat and one under Jameson Williams' passenger seat.

The gun in the back seat was registered to Williams' brother, who had a concealed pistol license. The gun under the passenger seat was registered to Jameson Williams, who did not have a concealed pistol license, according to the report. Jameson Williams, who repeatedly identified himself as a player for the Lions during the stop according to body camera audio, was handcuffed and put in the back of a police car.

"I feel that there was probable cause to arrest, and he was under arrest by the patrol officer," Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis told WXYZ-TV. "And because of that, he should have been conveyed to the Detroit Detention Center and processed."

However, a supervisor and later a sergeant arrived at the scene and Williams was released after the sergeant made several phone calls to higher-ranking officers to find out if Williams should be arrested or if the concealed piston license belonging to his brother covered both guns. Finally, he made a call to a lieutenant, whose comments cannot be heard in the body camera audio, and Williams was taken out of handcuffs and let go. No report was written by police on the traffic stop, according to the report.

When first questioned by WXYZ-TV, a deputy chief in the department said there was only one gun in the car; however, when Chief James White learned about the second gun in the vehicle, he shared parts of the body camera footage with the station and ordered the investigation.

"Jameson made us aware immediately that he was a passenger in a routine traffic stop on October 8th. We discussed the incident with him and have kept the league informed of what we know," the Lions said in a statement to WXYZ-TV. "We understand he was released without incident or citation. It is now our understanding that the Detroit Police Department is revisiting the matter. Jameson has hired an attorney, and we will not be commenting further out of respect for the legal process."

The traffic stop came two weeks before Williams was suspended two games for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances. Williams said in a statement last week that the suspension was a "complete surprise." He also was suspended four games last season for violating the league's gambling policy.

Williams, selected 12th overall by the Lions in the 2022 draft, is second on the team this season with 361 receiving yards and three touchdown catches.

Sources: Vikes fill LT void, deal for Jags' Robinson

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 29 October 2024 18:02

EAGAN, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings acquired Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle Cam Robinson on Tuesday, sources told ESPN, moving swiftly and aggressively to replace injured incumbent Christian Darrisaw.

In addition to Robinson, the Vikings receive a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick that can go away based on playing time, while the Jaguars receive a conditional 2026 fifth-round selection that can become a fourth-rounder based on playing time, according to sources.

Robinson, 29, is in the final year of a contract that pays him $16.25 million this season.

Darrisaw suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee during the Vikings' 30-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams last Thursday. He signed a four-year contract extension in August and is expected to return to full health next season.

That makes Robinson a likely short-term addition for the remainder of a season in which the Vikings have gotten off to a surprising 5-2 start.

Veteran backup David Quessenberry replaced Darrisaw against the Rams, but Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell said afterward that the team would consider multiple options for the position over the final 10 games.

Robinson started the Jaguars' first seven games but was benched for fourth-year player Walker Little on Sunday against Green Bay. That was the first time in his career he had been active for a game and not played.

Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said Monday it was undecided if Little would be the starter going forward.

Robinson, who has a career pass block win rate of 81.7%, played in nine games in 2023, missing the first four while suspended for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. He missed four other games while on injured reserve with a knee injury.

That was the third consecutive season in which Robinson missed games because of injury. He has played just one full season (2020) since the Jaguars drafted him 34th overall in 2017, and has missed 32 games in his career because of injury, suspension or benching.

It was not immediately clear whether Robinson could be ready in time to play in the Vikings' next game Sunday night against the Indianapolis Colts.

Darrisaw, 25, has been the Vikings' starting left tackle since they made him the No. 23 pick of the 2021 draft. He has battled a series of injuries but performed well enough to merit the new contract, which is worth up to $113 million.

The injury occurred while Darrisaw was blocking with 35 seconds remaining in the first half Thursday. Rams safety Jaylen McCollough fell into the side of his left knee, and team medical officials helped him walk directly to the locker room as the Vikings finished out the half.

ESPN's Michael DiRocco contributed to this report.

Hawks' Bogdanovic (hamstring) out at least month

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 29 October 2024 16:51

Atlanta Hawks guard Bogdan Bogdanovic will be out for at least one month because of a hamstring injury, the team announced Tuesday.

Bogdanovic, 32, hasn't played since the season opener and underwent a non-surgical procedure on Tuesday. He will be re-evaluated in approximately four weeks.

An eight-year veteran, Bogdanovic is a key piece of Atlanta's bench, averaging 15.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists and shooting 39.1 percent from 3-point range in his five seasons with the Hawks.

Including his first three seasons in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings (2017-20), Bogdanovic has averaged 14.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 450 games (193 starts). He is a career 38.4 percent 3-point shooter.

The Phoenix Suns selected Bogdanovic No. 27 overall in the 2014 NBA draft and traded his rights to Sacramento two years later.
