Left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya has been named in Sri Lanka's squad for the two Tests in South Africa, more than two years after he last played a Test. Offspinner Nishan Peiris, who made his Test debut against New Zealand in September, has also been included.
Ramesh Mendis, the offspin-bowling allrounder, misses out on selection, though he claimed six wickets in his only Test appearance this year. Ramesh, additionally, can bat.
Though Prabath Jayasuriya leads the spin contingent, this amounts to something of a shake-up in the ranks with Sri Lanka playing in Durban and Gqeberha, where the tracks are expected to take more turn than most South African surfaces, particularly as matches wear on.
The squad is largely as expected in the batting and seam-bowling fronts, however. Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha and allrounder Milan Rathnayake make up fast-bowling outfit. Top order batter Oshada Fernando makes it in into this squad, but Nishan Madushka - who has made a bright start in ODIs - does not.

Both Embuldeniya and Oshada have partly been picked on account of their good performances in South Africa in 2019, when Sri Lanka had also played in Durban and what was then Port Elizabeth. Embuldeniya took six wickets at 23.83 across three innings on that tour, while Oshada hit a fourth-innings 75 not out alongside Kusal Mendis to see Sri Lanka home in what could have been a tough chase. Neither player, though, has been especially impressive in domestic cricket over the last season, though Embuldeniya did have a decent outing in the four-day National Super League.

Several Test specialists are already in Durban for a pre-series training camp, overseen partially by former South Africa batter Neil McKenzie, who serves as Sri Lanka's consultant on this trip.

Kusal Mendis, Asitha, Kamindu Mendis and Pathum Nissanka have also been pulled out of the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand, after Sri Lanka sealed that series on Sunday. This is so those players can have a couple of extra days to recover and begin preparation for the Tests in South Africa.

The first Test is scheduled to start on November 27, in Kingsmead, Durban.

Both Sri Lanka and South Africa have a shot at finishing in the top two on the World Test Championship table.

Sri Lanka squad for Test series in South Africa

Dhananjaya de Silva (capt), Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Kusal Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Oshada Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Prabath Jayasuriya, Nishan Peiris, Lasith Embuldeniya, Milan Rathnayake, Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha

Browns' Stefanski not worried over hot seat talk

Published in Breaking News

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Tuesday that he's not concerned about talk that he is on the "hot seat" amid his team's 2-8 start to the season.

The Browns are off to their worst start since 2017, when the team went 0-17, and in recent weeks, there has been speculation on local Cleveland radio regarding Stefanski's job security.

"I think probably because I grew up listening to [Philadelphia radio], I'm smart enough to not worry about outside noise," Stefanski said. "I get that's part of this gig. That's life in the big city. My sole focus is getting this team ready to get a win on Thursday night. That's it."

Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry, both of whom joined the organization before the 2020 season, signed extensions in June after leading the Browns to their second playoff appearance in four years. The Browns did not disclose the length of those extensions. Stefanski won his second NFL Coach of the Year award last season for his efforts in guiding an injury-riddled team back to the postseason.

Cleveland, however, has regressed from its 11-win season last year. The Browns, with a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, would clinch their 22nd losing season since returning to Cleveland in 1999.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson, for whom the Browns traded three first-round picks and gave a fully guaranteed $230 million deal before the 2022 season, suffered his second straight season-ending injury in Week 7. Watson has only started 19 games in Cleveland -- he served an 11-game suspension to start the 2022 season after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions -- and has posted the second-worst total QBR since making his debut.

Days after Watson tore his right Achilles tendon, Stefanski announced he would be relinquishing playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, a decision he said was made on his own.

During the team's Week 10 bye, Berry was asked about how confident he was that he and Stefanski will get another season to turn around the team.

"I'll be honest, neither of us really think of it that way," he said. "I'd say number one, to myself, I always view myself as a steward of the organization in this role and really my focus is on doing the things that are in my control, short term and long term, to make sure it's in the best interest of the franchise. ... Kevin's an outstanding coach and he's absolutely part of the solution with everything."

Jets fire GM Douglas amid disappointing season

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 19 November 2024 10:30

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets' disappointing season claimed another casualty Tuesday, as owner Woody Johnson fired general manager Joe Douglas.

Phil Savage, a senior football adviser for the Jets, was named the team's interim general manager. Savage is a former GM of the Cleveland Browns (2005-08).

"Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the General Manager of the New York Jets. I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward," Johnson said in a statement.

Johnson added that the Jets "will begin the process to identify a new General Manager immediately."

Douglas' departure comes only seven weeks after Johnson fired coach Robert Saleh following the team's 2-3 start. Douglas, who spearheaded the coaching search when Saleh was hired in 2021, wasn't consulted on the Saleh firing.

The Jets have since gone 1-5 under interim coach Jeff Ulbrich.

Douglas, who signed a six-year contract when he was hired in June 2019, had an expiring contract. He was to be a free agent after the season.

Under Douglas, the Jets have a 30-64 record, no winning seasons and no playoff appearances. Douglas has built a roster with young stars such as wide receiver Garrett Wilson and cornerback Sauce Gardner, but he had a huge miss by drafting quarterback Zach Wilson with the second pick in 2021 after deciding to move on from Sam Darnold and trading him to the Carolina Panthers.

Douglas tried a quick fix at quarterback, trading for future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers in April 2023, but Rodgers has failed to live up to expectations this season after missing all but four snaps last year with a torn Achilles.

Douglas' legacy with the Jets will revolve around the issues at quarterback during his tenure. Since the start of 2019, the team's quarterbacks rank last in the NFL in Total QBR (36), completion rate (59.6%), and yards per attempt (6.3), according to ESPN Research.

Ex-Bulls star Love dies at 81 after cancer battle

Former Chicago Bulls star forward Bob Love died Monday following a long battle with cancer. He was 81.

Love was a three-time All-Star who spent nine of his 11 NBA seasons with the Bulls. He joined Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan in becoming the second member of the Bulls to have his jersey retired by the organization in 1994.

"With his No. 10 jersey hanging in the United Center rafters, his on-court achievements are forever etched in history, but Bob's impact transcended basketball," the Bulls said in a statement. "He became an inspirational figure and a passionate community ambassador for the Bulls, dedicating himself to charitable causes and uplifting countless lives with his motivational speeches. We are profoundly grateful for his enduring contributions and legacy both on and off the court in Chicago."

Love averaged 21.3 points and 6.8 rebounds in 592 games (444 starts) during his time with the Bulls from 1968 to 1976. He also played briefly with the Cincinnati Royals, Seattle SuperSonics, Milwaukee Bucks and then-New York Nets.

"Bob is one of the original Bulls greats," owner Jerry Reinsdorf wrote in a statement. "During his nine seasons with the Bulls, Bob became a cornerstone of the franchise, and his tenacious defense set high standards for competition and toughness. Toughness was not only a trademark of Bob's play on the court but also apparent in his resiliency throughout his basketball career. His impact on the Bulls and the countless lives he touched through his work in the community will keep him in our memories forever."

Love was selected by Cincinnati in the fourth round of the 1965 NBA draft out of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The 6-foot-8 star played two seasons with the Royals before being taken in the 1968 NBA expansion draft by Milwaukee, but he was traded along with Bob Weiss to Chicago that November for Flynn Robinson.

Love was selected to three straight All-Star games from 1971 to 1973. He made the All-NBA second team twice and the All-Defensive second team three times.

Spurs rule Wembanyama (knee) out vs. Thunder

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs gave Victor Wembanyama the day off from practice on Monday before officially listing him as out for Tuesday's NBA Cup matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder due to a right knee contusion.

The club initially said after practice Monday that it would list Wembanyama as questionable, before making him doubtful later that day on the official injury report.

The Spurs provided an updated injury report Tuesday that listed the 20-year old as out.

Wembanyama missed Saturday's loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

"A little beat-up right now," he said on the night he sustained the injury. "I took a big hit. It's just a hit. I didn't twist nothing. This is not a big deal."

Wembanyama's injury came with 6:41 left in a loss Friday to the Los Angeles Lakers while guarding Anthony Davis on a drive to the basket. The players hit right knees during the collision, which knocked Wembanyama to the floor.

Wembanyama was whistled for a foul on the play and immediately subbed out before walking to the locker room. Davis stayed in the game and connected one of two free throws. Wembanyama appeared hobbled walking away from his postgame media availability that night.

The No. 1 pick of the 2023 NBA draft, Wembanyama has connected on 24 3-pointers, which ranks as the most over a four-game span in Spurs history. Wembanyama currently averages 22.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 blocks and 1.3 steals.

Sources: Maxey challenged Embiid over tardiness

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 19 November 2024 11:12

Amid a 2-11 start that has them in last place in the Eastern Conference, and with their star trio of Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey yet to play a game together, the Philadelphia 76ers held a team meeting following Monday night's 106-89 loss to the Miami Heat.

The loss was the team's fourth in a row, sparking veteran guard Kyle Lowry to call for the meeting -- a much-needed heart-to-heart and a call to action and urgency, sources told ESPN. Players and coaches held each other accountable and took fault in the start to the season.

Maxey challenged Embiid to be on time to team activities, calling out the 2022-23 league MVP about being late "for everything" and how it impacts the locker room, from other players to the coaching staff, sources briefed on the meeting told ESPN.

Maxey and Embiid have a close friendship and a history of holding each other accountable, according to those around the team.

"Tyrese loves Big Fella, but this is the elephant in the room," a person involved in the meeting told ESPN.

Players told 76ers coach Nick Nurse they want to be coached harder, and coaches in turn said they want players to practice with purpose and attention to detail.

Embiid accepted the messages sent in the meeting, sources said, but he stated that he is sometimes confused about what the 76ers are attempting to execute on the court.

Embiid, who was listed as doubtful most of Monday due to an illness, was not seen by most teammates and coaches throughout the day before appearing for warmups and playing in the game.

Maxey is highly regarded as a young leader by many in the organization and those around the team were not surprised that he spoke up Monday. He has been out since Nov. 7 with a strained right hamstring, but sources said he's expected to return this week, either Wednesday in Memphis or Friday at home against the Brooklyn Nets.

Philadelphia transformed its roster in the offseason after falling in six games to the New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs. The Sixers added George, a nine-time All-Star, on a four-year, $212 million deal to join Embiid and Maxey, who, hours later, signed his own deal for five years and $204 million.

After years of trying and ultimately failing to find the right players to surround Embiid -- from Jimmy Butler to Ben Simmons to James Harden -- the Sixers believed they'd landed on the ideal pair with George and Maxey.

ESPN's Basketball Power Index ranked the Sixers third in its preseason rankings. Their preseason over/under win total was 51.5.

George, recovering from a bone bruise in his left knee, has played in six of the team's first 13 games. Embiid missed the start of the season, as well, with what the team termed "knee injury management," and then was suspended for three games for shoving Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Marcus Hayes. The team is 0-3 since his return.

We're on rivals' radar now - Wimbledon champ Patten

Published in Tennis
Tuesday, 19 November 2024 04:46

"Our [recent] results have been mixed so we haven't had a crazy good end to the year.

"In one sense it's been great in that it [winning Wimbledon] has given us confidence that we can compete with everyone and win any tournament we play but at the same time maybe there's more pressure there.

"Maybe guys are a little more prepared to play us, they're scouting us because we've been around a little bit more. It's mixed but I'm not complaining."

After Wimbledon, Patten and Heliovaara lost in the third round at the US Open but reached the final of the ATP 500 event in Beijing and added their most recent success in Stockholm last month.

"It's nice to reflect on what a journey this year has been," Patten added.

"I always had belief in myself, but at the same time tennis is a difficult sport and you have to respect the game that way.

"Some matches you win, some you lose and sometimes it's not necessarily in your control no matter how hard you're working or how much potential you have."

Patten, from Manningtree in Essex, is now planning a two-week break to visit his girlfriend in the USA before flying Down Under to begin preparations for the 2025 season.

"The tour starts in Australia - it's really early this year just with how the dates fall, so I'm going to fly out on 22 December, have Christmas there, which will be a first and an interesting experience, I'm quite looking forward to it," he added.

A 37-year-old Federer triumphed in the pair's final encounter, in 2019 at Wimbledon, but it was a 17-year-old Nadal who won their first meeting, in 2004.

"I thought I was on top of the world. And I was - until two months later, when you walked on the court in Miami in your red sleeveless shirt, showing off those biceps, and you beat me convincingly.

"All that buzz I'd been hearing about you about this amazing young player from Mallorca, a generational talent, probably going to win a major someday - it wasn't just hype.

"We were both at the start of our journey and it's one we ended up taking together. Twenty years later, Rafa, I have to say: What an incredible run you've had. Including 14 French Opens - historic!

"You made Spain proud... you made the whole tennis world proud."

Federer teamed up with Nadal for the final match of his career when the pair - affectionately nicknamed 'Fedal' - played together in the doubles for Europe against the Rest of the World at the Laver Cup.

Both players were in tears as Federer bowed out of the game.

"Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career."

He added: "Rafa, I know you're focused on the last stretch of your epic career.

"We will talk when it's done. For now, I just want to congratulate your family and team, who all played a massive role in your success.

"And I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next."

Britain face deciding doubles to reach BJK Cup final

Published in Tennis
Tuesday, 19 November 2024 08:42

Whether Britain win the trophy on Wednesday, sometime over the course of Raducanu's career, or not at all remains to be seen.

But she has again showed over the past week why Keothavong's team need her fit and firing.

Raducanu had not played for two months before the women's team event because of a foot injury and it remained to be seen what shape she would be in.

Straight-set wins against Germany's Jule Niemeier and Canada's Rebecca Marino were encouraging given her previous absence.

Raducanu was again expected to make light work of Hruncakova, who is ranked 241st in the world and largely plays on the third-tier ITF Futures Tour.

A slow start from the Slovakian, whose game revolves around power from the baseline, allowed Raducanu to move 5-1 ahead in the first set before becoming slightly passive as her opponent improved.

Her first-serve percentage was not as high as she would have liked and her returning game also lacked rhythm as Hruncakova fought back to 5-4 before Raducanu served out.

It was a similar story in the second set.

Raducanu confidently moved a double break up before Hruncakova pinched one back, forcing the British number two to again show her resilience.

The guttural roar which greeted her winning crosscourt forehand on match point indicated her satisfaction, as did the beaming smile across her face as she handed out high fives to the whole British team afterwards.

"Every match is truly challenging and as the tournament progresses it is more and more," said Raducanu, who has thrived in the team environment.

"It was a tough match and my opponent has a huge ball strike and played above her ranking.

"I was pleased with how I composed myself and served out the sets."
