Mets tie NLCS behind Manaea gem, Vientos slam

Published in Baseball
Monday, 14 October 2024 17:48

LOS ANGELES -- Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos homered as the New York Mets stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers' record-tying postseason scoreless streak in a 7-3 victory on Monday, tying the NL Championship Series at a game apiece.

Lindor added to his storybook season with a leadoff homer in the first inning against Ryan Brasier. Vientos delivered during New York's five-run second, connecting for a grand slam against Landon Knack.

The Mets are the first NL team with multiple grand slams in a single postseason since the 2016 Chicago Cubs (also 2).

Before Lindor went deep, Los Angeles had a string of 33 consecutive scoreless innings. Jack Flaherty led the Dodgers to a 9-0 victory in Game 1 of the NLCS on Sunday night.

Sean Manaea opened Game 2 with four shutout innings for New York. He was charged with three runs, two earned, and two hits in five-plus innings. Closer Edwin Diaz earned a four-out save.

Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and two walks.

Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is Wednesday in New York.

ESPN Research and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It's a two-game day in the League Championship Series.

In the first game of the day, the scrappy New York Mets struck early and the Los Angeles Dodgers were never able to overcome the deficit as the Mets evened up the series 1-1 with a 7-3 win in Game 2.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees host the Cleveland Guardians in a championship series game against a team other than the Houston Astros for the first time since 2012. Can Carlos Rodon change the tune of the Yankees' recent ALCS struggles?

Takeaways

New York Mets 7, Los Angeles Dodgers 3

Series tied 1-1

The New York Mets' season-long narrative has centered on the team's uncanny resiliency. Monday's bounceback win in Game 2 did nothing to refute that take on New York's campaign. Lately, it's been late-game thunderbolts that have propelled the Mets, but today the rumbling started right from the outset on Francisco Lindor's leadoff homer. It was only one run ,but it was huge after the Los Angeles Dodgers stifled the Mets' lineup in Game 1 to extend a historic streak of scoreless innings. The impregnable Dodgers staff narrative died with that swing and the Mets' weeble-wobble ways continued. As in, you can push 'em over, but they pop right back up.

The Lindor blast set the tone while Mark Vientos' grand slam in the second inning furthered his own narrative as New York's emergent October hero. That gave Sean Manaea all the buffer he needed ,and while the Dodgers threatened to close the gap a couple of times, the Mets evened the series in a relatively low-drama contest. The lesson for the Dodgers: This Mets team is not going to go quietly, if they go down at all.

What to watch in Game 3: With an even series after two games and the next three games at Citi Field, the probabilities have swung ever so slightly to the Mets' side. That's just the math of it, but in reality, nothing in this series has been decided. New York now has home advantage but that's more or less meaningless -- and the more important factor is which team benefits more from the day off as the series shifts to New York. Whose staff needed the rest more? Whose injured hitters (Freddie Freeman, Gavin Lux, Brandon Nimmo) will be most restored by Game 3? Basically, buckle up for Wednesday because this thing is just getting started. -- Bradford Doolittle

What happens next in Sinner doping case?

Published in Tennis
Monday, 14 October 2024 01:00

Italy's Jannik Sinner has enjoyed the most successful - and eventful - season of his career, having dominated the men's game while the case investigating his two failed doping tests rumbles on.

The reigning Australian Open and US Open champion, who won his seventh title of the season in Shanghai on Sunday, tested positive for clostebol in March.

An independent panel, which was presented the case by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), accepted there was "no fault or negligence" attached to 23-year-old Sinner.

It said the world number one had provided a "credible" explanation and he was able to continue playing.

But the decision that Sinner bore no fault has been challenged by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), which has launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

No date has been set for the hearing.

"Whatever's going to happen, I just wish for it to be resolved as soon as possible," 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic said.

"This whole case is not helping our sport at all."

Sabalenka wins third consecutive Wuhan Open final

Published in Tennis

Aryna Sabalenka became the first player to win the Wuhan Open three times with a hard-fought win over Zheng Qinwen in Sunday's final.

The 26-year-old Belarusian was taken to three sets by China's Zheng in a thrilling rematch of this year's Australian Open final, in which she also claimed victory.

Sabalenka clinched her fourth women's singles title of the year 6-3 5-7 6-3 and remains undefeated in Wuhan.

"That sounds crazy," she said. "This place definitely feels like home.

"I am pretty sure we are going to play many more finals against one another."

Top seed Sabalenka took the opening set in just 38 minutes, but Zheng mounted her comeback in a gripping second to force a decider.

There, Zheng found herself 3-0 down, and while she pulled two games back, lost her serve again as Sabalenka broke for a 5-2 lead.

The world number two failed to serve out the match as Zheng broke back to love, but finally wrapped up her 17th career title on her third championship point.

Reigning Olympic gold medallist Zheng, who became the first Chinese player to reach a WTA 1000 final, has now lost all four of her meetings against the three-time Grand Slam champion.

"Next time I will be better," she said.

Sabalenka is now unbeaten in 17 consecutive matches in Wuhan, breaking Petra Kvitova's record for the most at the tournament.

The win adds to a successful year in which she won both the Australian Open and US Open and appeared in seven singles finals.

Djokovic denied 100th title as Sinner wins in Shanghai

Published in Tennis
Sunday, 13 October 2024 03:46

The carrot of the century had been providing extra motivation for Djokovic in Shanghai.

So too was the opportunity to show the younger generation that he still has the quality and durability to beat them to the biggest prizes.

However, a couple of lapses from the four-time Shanghai champion at key moments proved costly in Sunday's final and allowed Sinner to edge the most critical points.

Despite the defeat, Djokovic has plenty of positives to take from a tournament where he produced some of his best tennis of the year.

"I still think that I played pretty good, so it gives me reason to believe that I can still play with these guys that are best in the world," added Djokovic.

Losing to Sinner for the third consecutive time, though, is a telling statistic as the veteran aims to keep pushing the next generation led by Sinner and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz.

"It's tough to tell you the secret [to beating Djokovic] because he doesn't have any weaknesses," Sinner said.

"You have to use the small amount of chances he gives you. He is a legend of our sport and is very tough to play against."

Kyrgios wants Grand Slam title to 'shut up' doubters

Published in Tennis

The Australian, who was beaten in the 2022 Wimbledon final by Novak Djokovic, had his temperament frequently questioned after on-court outbursts and meltdowns early in his career, but denied he was "a bad boy".

"I guess I was branded that just because I was a bit outside the circle of what a normal tennis player is," he added.

"I don't think I carry that perception with the Aussie public anymore. But at the start of my career, people thought I was like a murderer."

With long-time rival Rafael Nadal announcing his retirement last week and Djokovic now 37, Kyrgios - who has been working as a commentator during his absence - believes the game is "the most open it has ever been".

Last week, Australian Open chief Craig Tiley said he hoped Kyrgios would play at the season-opening Grand Slam, which starts in Melbourne Park on 12 January.

He added that the player would be in the main draw, whether through a protected ranking or a wildcard, as opposed to being forced through qualifying.

"The confidence that we get about Nick playing is in his preparation, we know he's doing more than he's done before," he said.

"We know that he wants to do it. We know that he's mentally preparing to get ready to play in January. So we fully expect to see him."

The PTPA says it was set up to "support, protect and advance players well-being on and off the court".

It has so far had a fractious relationship with tennis' established powers and has not been able to get into the room where key decisions are made.

Nassar said he thinks the system is "patently unfair to every player, Jannik included" and highlighted the case of Britain's Tara Moore.

Moore was Britains leading women's doubles player when she was provisionally banned for testing positive for nandrolone and boldenone in May 2022.

She was cleared by an independent tribunal in December 2023, but 10 months later is still waiting for the ITIA's appeal against that decision to be heard by Cas.

"I have many reservations about how every single one of those cases is handled," Nassar continued.

"In Tara, here is a player who won her appeal, and certainly wasn't the number one player in her sport, but she still missed 18 months.

"She's still dealing with an appeal and fighting to get her reputation back. There is no winning in that case."

Wada's appeal against the Sinner verdict may well be heard more quickly.

An appeal by the former world number one Simona Halep was heard just over four months after it was registered, with the verdict issued by Cas a further month after the hearing.

It was, however, only last Thursday that the panel's full reasoning was published.

Cas cut Halep's suspension for testing positive for roxadustat from four years to nine months but concluded that despite steps actively taken by her to ascertain the contents of the supplement, considered the fault of the negative test, "there was fault on the players part".

Wada will also be hoping to prove fault or negligence on Sinner's part.

The initial tribunal decided Sinner was inadvertently contaminated with clostebol by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, who had applied an over-the-counter spray containing the banned substance to treat a cut on his own hand.
