Djokovic overcomes hip issues to set up Sinner final
World number four Novak Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner in the final of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday as he bids to win his 100th ATP title.
The Serb overcame issues with his hip to beat USA's Taylor Fritz 6-4 7-6 (8-6) in China to set up a final with Italian Sinner, who secured the year-end world number one ranking by beating Tomas Machac 6-4 7-5 in the other semi-final.
Djokovic, 37, breezed through the first set, displaying some of his best tennis of the season.
But the 24-time Grand Slam champion's dominance slowed in the second set as he struggled with a hip problem.
Fritz saved three break points in the fifth game of the second set, giving him a 3-2 lead.
Djokovic, who had to withdraw from this year's French Open with a knee injury, was growing increasingly irate with the hip issue and called a medical timeout with Fritz 6-5 up.
The American sensed his opportunity to bounce back but Djokovic held serve to take the set to a tie-break.
World number seven Fritz held a 6-5 lead on serve in the tie-break but lost both of the following points, allowing Djokovic to serve out the match.
"A few months ago, a tumour was found on my spine, which a biopsy confirmed as Langerhans cell histiocytosis - a condition with only around 50 new cases in the UK each year.
"While it's not the outcome we were hoping for, the prognosis is better than we initially feared, and it's not as aggressive as we once thought.
"I'm currently undergoing mild treatment and will be reassessed soon to check for any improvements.
"At the moment, I'm feeling good and hopeful for some positive news in the near future.
Thank you all for the kind messages and well-wishes over the past few weeks."
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disorder that can damage tissue or cause lesions to form in one or more places in the body.
Histiocytes are types of white blood cells which help fight infection. In LCH, histiocytes grow excessively and can gather in bones, skin, lymph nodes, lungs, bone marrow or the pituitary gland.
This can cause a variety of problems such as pain in the bone, skin rash, swollen tummy, or breathing difficulties.
After that shock victory over the world champions to start their stint in Canada, Scott Bemand's side came into the game as notional favourites and certainly looked set to justify that tag in the early stages.
Dominating territory and possession through the opening minutes, the only source of frustration for Ireland will have been their failure to make that advantage count.
Predictably, they were made to pay for their profligacy when, after what was her side's first real period of pressure, USA prop Rogers marked her 50th cap with a try from close range.
Player of the match Erin King responded to level matters but, with the last play of the half, Rogers' memorable day got even better with her second score.
If there was one note for caution for the Eagles as they celebrated into half-time, it was their eight penalties conceded in the opening 40 minutes.
Ultimately, it was their ill-discipline that would prove their undoing with Tahlia Brody, Rachel Ehrecke and Rachel Johnson all sent to the sin-bin in the space of 12 second-half minutes.
Brody was the first to go with her transgression, catching the ball in an offside position, also bringing about the penalty try that levelled the game just after the hour mark.
Replacement Ehrecke followed soon after and it was against 13 players that Ireland hooker Moloney was able to maul her way across the whitewash to give her side the lead.
In the final minutes, Johnson was shown a yellow for a high tackle to again reduce the Americans to 13 and Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe made Ireland's numerical advantage count when rounding off the day's scoring with a try in the corner.
Ireland: Flood; Considine, Dalton, Breen (capt), Murphy Crowe; Fowley, Lane; ODowd, Jones, Djougang; Wall, Tuite; King, Wafer, Hogan.
Replacements: Moloney, McCarthy, Stock, Campbell, Nic a Bhaird, Scuffil-McCabe, OBrien, Higgins.
USA: Mataitoga; Emba, Kelter, Cantorna, Sharp; Hawkins, Bargell; Rogers, Treder, Jacoby; Jarrell, Taufoou; Brody, Zackary (capt), Johnson.
Replacements: Stathopoulos, Learned, Sagapolu, Ehrecke, Hann, Tukuafu, Henrich, Feury.
After scoring two tries as a replacement in the win over New Zealand, back row Erin King's first-half touchdown contributed to her being named player of the match.
Sevens player King has been one of the big successes of the tournament from an Ireland point of view.
"Coming into this environment, it's been amazing. The girls have helped me so much. It's such a nice place to be and such a nice culture to be around," said King.
"We talk about our green wave a lot. The green wave is the strongest wave in the ocean and that's what we are."
The flanker said Ireland's belief had not wavered despite things not going their way in the opening half.
"We were down most of that game but it just shows the resilience in this squad and the people we have coming on and the energy and how badly we want it."
With Ireland also having beaten Australia in Belfast prior to the Vancouver trip, captain Enya Breen said the players could look back on a successful four weeks.
"It's great to come out of this block with three wins out of four against tier-one nations - so we're delighted," said Breen, who was skippering the side for the second successive week because of Edel McMahon's injury-enforced absence.
"It's a massive step for us as a group,"
Viana confirmed as Man City's director of football
Manchester City have confirmed the appointment of Hugo Viana as their new director of football.
Viana replaces Txiki Begiristain after it was announced the Spaniard would step down at the end of the 2024-25 season.
"Viana will begin his full-time role in the summer of 2025, but will collaborate with Txiki in the preceding months to ensure a smooth transition," a City statement said.
"We look forward to paying tribute to Txiki's outstanding contribution to Manchester City at the end of the season."
Viana spent time at Sporting CP, Newcastle United and Valencia as a player and won 29 caps for Portugal between 2001 and 2012.
He was appointed as Sporting's director of football in 2018 and helped the club win the Portuguese title in 2021 and 2024 despite strong competition from Benfica and FC Porto.
He's credited with bringing in Ruben Amorim as manager in 2020, who has also played a key role in returning Sporting to the top of Portuguese football.
Sources have told ESPN that City also looked closely at Girona sporting director Quique Carcel before pursuing a deal for Viana.
Begiristain's decision to leave the Etihad has thrown Pep Guardiola's future into further doubt.
The pair have worked closely at City and Guardiola will be out of contract at the end of the season.
The 53-year-old has so far dodged questions about whether he will sign another contract extension.
Sources have told ESPN that City want Guardiola to stay and would like an indication about his plans for the future before the new year.

Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates on Saturday to extend their perfect start to the Women's Super League season under new boss Sonia Bompastor.
Bompastor's predecessor Emma Hayes, now head coach of the United States women's national team, was in attendance as first-half goals from Mayra Ramírez and Sandy Baltimore proved enough to claim all three points in the London derby.
The result increases pressure on Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall, whose team have now won just one of their opening four games in the WSL and were beaten 5-2 by Bayern Munich in the UEFA Women's Champions League earlier in the week.
Both Chelsea goals capitalised on suspect defending from the hosts. Ramírez pulled off an audacious scooped finish over her head as she reacted fastest to a bouncing ball from a corner to give her side the lead in the fourth minute.
Twelve minutes later, England international Lauren James showed off her skills on the right hand side before lofting a cross to the far post, where Baltimore was waiting unmarked to nod the ball past Daphne van Domselaar.
Caitlin Foord scored just before the break to give the home crowd hope of a result, but Chelsea managed the late-game pressure and held out for the win. Substitute Stina Blackstenius had the best of the Arsenal chances and hit the bar but could not breach Hannah Hampton's net.
"It was a top game, we were expecting that, and it's always good to win," Bompastor told the BBC after the game. "I think we did well in the first [half], not good in the second one."
Asked about her 100% record so far with the west London-based team, the former Lyon coach added: "Yeah it couldn't be better for me."
Sana boost for Pakistan in their must-win clash against NZ
Pakistan remain in contention for the knockouts but need to beat New Zealand by a substantial margin on Monday, and hope other results go their way. If India beat Australia out Sunday, Pakistan will not be able to reach the semis.
Sana, who was named captain of the side in August, was missed on Friday, where Pakistan were also without senior seamer Diana Baig, who has yet to recover from a leg injury. Their batting, in particular, misfired as only Aliya Riaz scored more than 20, and they were bowled out for the lowest total so far in the tournament, 82. Though Sana has been batting as low as No.7 in the two matches she has played so far, she was up at No.5 in the lead-up, and holds Pakistan's highest individual score at this event: 30. She has also opened the bowling and is Pakistan's second-highest wicket-taker with four strikes from two matches and has their lowest economy rate of 4.82.
Earlier in the tournament, Sana was questioned over why she is not batting higher and maintained it was a "team decision." When Muneeba was asked whether the coach had been making decisions unilaterally, she rejected that assumption and explained that the team remained a work in progress. "The management and coach discuss and we all mutually decide. We need help too. We're young," Muneeba said. "If we talk about Fatima, she is also young in her internationals. I have also led for the first time. We need help and management is for this purpose. But collectively, decisions are planned before the match and things are decided mutually."
India take up challenge of defending with dew around while eyeing clean sweep
India continued to put themselves under the pressure of posting a total and defending in the dew as they won the toss and decided to bat first. Najmul Hassan Shanto, the Bangladesh captain, said Bangladesh would have chased anyway. India, currently leading the T20I series 2-0, are looking to complete a whitewash across formats after winning the Tests 2-0.
This was Mahmudullah's last T20 international for Bangladesh. He was presented a memento at the end of the huddle during the warm-ups.
India: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav (capt), Nitish Reddy, Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav

Murshida Khatun in as Bangladesh bat against unchanged South Africa
Toss Bangladesh chose to bat vs South Africa
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana won the toss and chose to bat against South Africa in Dubai. It was the last league fixture for both teams, with Bangladesh all but out while are South Africa well in contention for the semi-final.
South Africa were unchanged and captain Laura Wolvaardt wanted them to win big keeping the net run rate in mind. She was happy to bat second because she felt they "can control NRR while chasing".
One square boundary was 63m away while the other was 57m, the wind blowing in that direction which is likely to make the boundary feel shorter. WV Raman on the broadcasr felt that the pitch would help spinners all through and urged that the batters use their feet to be successful on the surface.
Bangladesh: 1 Dilara Akter, 2 Shathi Rani, 3 Sobhana Mostary, 4 Nigar Sultana (capt, wk), 5 Murshida Khatun, 6 Shorna Akter, 7 Ritu Moni, 8 Fahima Khatun, 9 Rabeya Khan, 10 Nahida Akter, 11 Marufa Akter
South Africa: 1 Laura Wolvaardt (capt), 2 Tazmin Brits, 3 Anneke Bosch, 4 Marizanne Kapp, 5 Sune Luus, 6 Chloe Tryon, 7 Annerie Dercksen, 8 Nadine de Klerk, 9 Sinalo Jafta (wk), 10 Nonkululeko Mlaba, 11 Ayabonga Khaka
October 13 at the T20 World Cup: Injury concerns for Australia ahead of blockbuster game vs India
England vs Scotland
Sharjah, 2pm local time
England squad: Heather Knight (capt), Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones (wk), Freya Kemp, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Linsey Smith, Danni Wyatt
Scotland squad: Kathryn Bryce (capt), Chloe Abel, Abbi Aitken-Drummond, Olivia Bell, Sarah Bryce (wk), Darcey Carter, Priyanaz Chatterji, Katherine Fraser, Saskia Horley, Lorna Jack, Ailsa Lister, Abtaha Maqsood, Megan McColl, Hannah Rainey, Rachel Slater
Tournament form guide: England have won both matches they've played so far - against Bangladesh and South Africa - while Scotland are coming into the match having lost all three of their games.
News brief: These teams will be facing each other for the first time in T20Is. England are coming into this match after a gap of four days, having last played against South Africa on Monday.
Scotland are out of the semi-final race. The Group B table has three teams - England, West Indies and South Africa - still in contention for the semi-final, with England having the lowest net run rate among them. England will be looking to improve their NRR with a big win.
"There was a little bit of illness at one point but I think hopefully everyone will be available," England captain Heather Knight said of player availability ahead of the match.
Australia vs India
Sharjah, 6pm local time
Australia squad: Alyssa Healy (capt & wk), Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Tayla Vlaeminck, Georgia Wareham
India squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), Smriti Mandhana (vice-capt), Yastika Bhatia (wk), Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (wk), Pooja Vastrakar, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh, D Hemalatha, Asha Sobhana, Radha Yadav, Shreyanka Patil, S Sajana
India will want a big win against Australia. If they win by more than 61 runs, they will move ahead of Australia, thereby automatically qualifying for the semi-final. In a case where India win by fewer than 60 runs, they will hope New Zealand win by a very small margin against Pakistan on Monday. For instance, if India make 150 against Australia and win by exactly 10 runs, New Zealand need to beat Pakistan by 28 runs defending 150 to go ahead of India's NRR. If India lose to Australia by more than 17 runs while chasing a target of 151, then New Zealand's NRR will be ahead of India, even if Pakistan beat New Zealand by just 1 run while defending 150.
Players to watch: Two of their best batters finding their form bodes well for India heading into the big game. Harmanpreet and Mandhana's collaborative effort against Pakistan boosted India's NRR with the semi-final race heating up. Mandhana, after a cautious start to her innings, changed gears and took on Sri Lanka's spinners to make 50 off 38 balls. Harmanpreet, continuing from where she'd left against Pakistan, played a classic, hitting eight fours and a six on her way to a 27-ball 52. It was just what India needed to reinvigorate their T20 World Cup campaign.
