Celtics to celebrate title at White House on Thu.
The Boston Celtics will be making their trip to the White House to celebrate winning their record-setting 18th NBA championship with President Joe Biden on Thursday.
Boston hosts the undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers in NBA Cup action on Tuesday, then has two days off before playing another NBA Cup game in Washington against the Wizards on Friday, making this an easy opportunity for the Celtics to celebrate their accomplishment at the White House.
The Celtics went 16 years between winning titles before claiming the 2024 championship in June with a five-game victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals.
The Denver Nuggets didn't visit Biden in 2023 after winning the title in 2023 due to scheduling conflicts, and the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers were unable to make the trip after Biden took office in January 2021. Prior to that, the 2017 and 2018 Golden State Warriors and 2019 Toronto Raptors did not go to the White House during President Donald Trump's first term in office.
This is already Boston's second and final trip to Washington of the season, having played the Wizards in D.C. for the first time this season on Oct. 24.
Doc fined for criticizing call refs say they got wrong
NEW YORK -- Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Sunday for public criticism of the officiating on a foul against Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo that the referees admitted they got wrong.
Rivers made the comments after the Bucks' 115-114 loss at Charlotte on Saturday, saying: "I thought the final play was the ref blowing a call. This is back-to-back games now where on the final play there has been an incorrect call made."
With the Hornets trailing by one, LaMelo Ball drove the right side of the lane and slipped and fell. Replays didn't appear to show any contact, but Antetokounmpo was whistled for the foul with 7.3 seconds left. Ball made both free throws to give Charlotte the lead.
"LaMelo Ball fell. He just fell down," Rivers said. "Nobody was near him. He slipped on his own. We come up with the ball and the game is over. So back-to-back games now we have had a call made against us that is incorrect. We were lucky in Detroit the kid missed two free throws. Tonight LaMelo Ball made the free throws."
The Bucks did not have a challenge left. If they had, the call would have been overturned on replay, crew chief Curtis Blair said afterward.
"During live play we called illegal leg-to-leg contact," Blair said. "During postgame review when we looked at the play there was no illegal contact on the play."
NBA: Tatum traveled before hitting game winner
NEW YORK -- Jayson Tatum traveled moments before making the deciding 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer to give the Boston Celtics a 126-123 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night, the NBA said.
Tatum moved his pivot foot with 3.4 seconds left in overtime and should have been called for traveling, the NBA revealed Sunday in its Last Two Minute Report.
The NBA publicly releases reports of officiated events -- calls and notable non-calls -- when games were at or within three points at any time in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime.
The uncalled travel was one of two missed calls on the final possession.
The NBA also said Toronto's Davion Mitchell should have been called for a foul against Boston's Jaylen Brown with seven seconds remaining. Had that been called, Brown would have gone to the foul line with the score tied at 123.
Play continued after Brown was knocked backward, with Tatum already having the ball in his hands on the right wing. He shuffled his feet -- that was the uncalled travel -- before stepping back and shooting over Toronto's Ochai Agbaji.
Time expired as Tatum's shot made its way to the basket.
Ted Williams' 1946 MVP award sells for over $500K
A rare souvenir postcard picturing Hank Aaron as a rookie with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro Leagues sold for nearly $200,000 at a baseball memorabilia auction that also included Ted Williams' 1946 AL MVP award, which went for $528,750.
The Aaron postcard from the scrapbook of scout Ed Scott, who discovered Aaron, went for $199,750 following a bidding war that soared past the pre-sale estimate of $5,000-$10,000, Hunt Auctions said.
The auction included 280 items from Williams' personal collection that had been held by his daughter, Claudia, who died last year. Among the other items were a silver bat awarded for his 1958 batting title, which sold for more than $270,000, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom presented to him by fellow naval aviator George H.W. Bush, which went for $141,000.
The sale also included items from the collection of Rutherford Hayes Jones, the business manager of the Washington Giants, one of the earliest Black baseball teams. The trove was discovered in 2001 in a suitcase, where it had been unseen for 40 years.
A first batch of items from Claudia Williams' collection went up for auction in 2012 at Fenway Park and garnered more than $5 million.
'It's challenging' - Gatland considers Wales future after record loss
World champions South Africa arrive in the Welsh capital next Saturday.
Wales then face a ferociously-tough Six Nations opener against France in Paris on 31 January.
This suggests there is no immediate end in sight to such a miserable run with Gatland saying he was unsure whether he expected to be in charge for the Springboks match and the subsequent Six Nations campaign.
He insisted the Wales squad would be determined to turn things around next weekend.
"When you're involved in professional sport, those are the challenges that define you as an individual," said Gatland.
"When you get out in that arena, you've got a lot of people looking at you. It's how you front up to the challenge.
"You can bury your head in the sand, walk away or you can roll your sleeves up and block up the white noise. Hopefully, we will put on an improved performance that shows some character against the world champions."
Gatland gave an impassioned message to Wales fans following the Australia defeat.
"We're really hurting from today," said Gatland.
"The supporters have been brilliant with the support they've given us over the years.
"We probably let them down a little bit. So we need to go out next week and make amends by putting a performance in they can be proud of."
Kane: England youth give Tuchel incredible options
Harry Kane said incoming England coach Thomas Tuchel has been boosted by the emergence of a crop of young players who have shone in the absence of more experienced internationals after a 5-0 Wembley win against the Republic of Ireland sealed a return to the top tier of the UEFA Nations League.
Former Bayern Munich and Chelsea coach Tuchel will officially take charge of England on Jan 1 and he will avoid having to oversee a two-legged Nations League playoff with interim coach Lee Carsley guiding the team to promotion from Nations League B with five wins in six games.
Sunday's 5-0 win against the Irish, which Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson called "embarrassing," followed a 3-0 win against Greece in Athens last Thursday.
Having seen nine players withdraw from his squad ahead of the two games, Carsley drafted in several of the Under-21 players, including Liverpool's Curtis Jones, Chelsea's Noni Madueke and Southampton's Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who he coached to Euro U21 glory in 2023.
And England captain Kane said Tuchel will reap the benefits of Carsley's nod towards youth when he takes charge for the World Cup qualification campaign.
"Thomas [Tuchel] has a lot of players to choose from," Kane told ITV. "A lot of young players that have come in and done well and some more experienced players that are injured and will be looking to come back so there's a good balance. I'm sure he [Tuchel] will be looking at everyone.
"We spoke about new opportunities for new lads and they've shown why they are here and a couple of good finishes and it was nice for Jarrod [Bowen] too to come on and score straight away."
Kane opened the scoring for England from the penalty in the 53rd minute -- his 69th international goal -- after Ireland defender Liam Scales was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Jude Bellingham.
Within five minutes, Anthony Gordon and Conor Gallagher made it 3-0 to England, with Bowen and Harwood-Bellis completing the scoring to inflict the Three Lions' biggest-ever win against Ireland.
"It was a really important win for us," Kane said. "It has been a really good camp and two tough games. "We got the job done in Greece and again here. It was a tough first-half but we came out with more energy and we finished it off.
"[Lee Carsley] has been top drawer, him and all the staff. After the Euros it was never going to be easy to come and go straight into the Nations League and sometimes the motivation is a bit less. I'm really glad we won today and finish off on a high."
Interim coach Carsley, who will now return to his role as Under-21 coach, said he will "prepare a document to debrief Thomas [Tuchel]" ahead of start and said it will be a "real challenge" for the German to decide who to select and who to leave out of his first squad.
Meanwhile, Ireland coach Hallgrimsson said he couldn't explain the performance of his team in the second-half.
"I'm lost for words," he told reporters. "It was six minutes of a kind of madness. We conceded a penalty and lost a player [to a red card]. We lost our heads and gave up.
"We had a game plan that was working perfectly, but then we conceded three goals in six minutes. It was a shock and we had to limit the damage.
"You cannot explain things like this. It's a slap in the face when it happens. It's easy to stand on the sidelines and criticise -- we were compact in the first half, but then we conceded three goals so easily. It's embarrassing to lose 5-0."
England win toss, bowl as Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid return
Toss England chose to bowl vs West Indies
England have won the toss and chosen to field in the fifth and final T20I of their West Indies tour in St Lucia.
The hosts will be looking to back up their consolation victory less than 24 hours ago at the same venue while England, who already sealed the series by winning the first three games, want to make it 4-1. The signs are good for England with every match of this series so far won by the side which has called correctly at the toss.
The tourist made two changes with Jofra Archer coming for Saqib Mahmood and Adil Rashid replacing Dan Mousley.
"We're up against a great opposition," England captain Jos Buttler said. "We had a fantastic game yesterday, a high-scoring match. We did a pretty good job. A couple of really big overs, which you want to try and limit, but chasing a big score, West Indies were always going to play that way."
West Indies have made one change with Romario Shepherd returning from the groin problem which kept him out of the previous match at the expense of Obed McCoy.
Rovman Powell, their captain, said at the toss: "It's a case of we're still following the same template as yesterday. If you've got to bat first, you've got to bat really good. It's an opportunity for us."
Play was set to begin under overcast skies on the same pitch which yielded 32 sixes on Saturday.
England: 1 Phil Salt (wk), 2 Will Jacks, 3 Jos Buttler (capt), 4 Jacob Bethell, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Sam Curran, 7 Jamie Overton, 8 Adil Rashid, 9 Rehan Ahmed, 10 Jofra Archer, 11 John Turner
West Indies: 1 Shai Hope, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 4 Rovman Powell (capt), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Sherfane Rutherford, 7 Romario Shepherd, 8 Roston Chase, 9 Gudakesh Motie, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Akeal Hosein
New dad Campos emotional after 1st PGA Tour win
SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda -- Rafael Campos felt like he was living a fairy tale Sunday when he went from being on the verge of losing his PGA Tour card to winning the Bermuda Championship, just six days after his wife gave birth to their first child in time to let him play.
Campos drilled his approach to 2 feet for eagle on the par-5 seventh hole during a surge that carried him to a 3-under 68 for a three-shot victory, joining the late Chi Chi Rodriguez as the only players from Puerto Rico to win on the PGA Tour.
The 36-year-old Campos has never played in a major. Now he's going to the Masters. This was only his second full year on the PGA Tour. The win makes him exempt through 2026.
"I just can't believe this is actually happening to me," Campos said through the sobs when he was interviewed on the 18th green after tapping in for par.
He won by three shots over Andrew Novak, who shot 71 for his best PGA Tour finish. Novak pulled within two shots when Campos missed an 18-inch par putt on the 14th par. Campos was not rattled, hitting all the right shots in a ferocious wind on the closing holes.
The tears began flowing moments after he tapped in for par and tried to grasp what happened.
Campos was No. 147 in the FedEx Cup with only two tournaments left, and he wasn't sure he could make it to Bermuda. He and wife decided to induce labor, and Paola Isabel was born Monday.
Coming off five straight missed cuts -- Campos missed eight in a row earlier in the season -- he made it to Bermuda in time and no longer felt the stress of being on outside of the top 125. Campos had said on Saturday the joy of their first child brought perspective and peace.
The result was the best performance in his 80th career start on the PGA Tour.
"It's been an unbelievable week -- best week of my life," he said. "Such a bad year, and to have things go my way -- everything together at once -- I'm just so happy. I'm grateful to call myself a PGA Tour champion. It's something I've dreamt about my entire life."
Campos, who finished at 19-under 265, earned $1.242 million and a two-year exemption, which might be more valuable. This was only his second year earning a full card. Campos gets into The Sentry to start the year at Kapalua, along with the Masters, the PGA Championship and The Players Championship.
He was tied with Novak to start the final round, and both were passed quickly by Justin Lower, a runner-up last week in Mexico.
That changed when Campos worked the wind flawlessly, setting up a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 6 and the eagle on the next hole. And it changed for Lower, who four-putted for double bogey on the par-3 eighth and never quite recovered.
Campos used his imagination in hitting shots through the wind, and it paid off on No. 10 when his shot rolled out to 18 inches for birdies, and on the next hole when he rammed in another birdie putt from 15 feet.
Then it was a matter of finishing in conditions so windy and tough that even short putts were being blown off line. Campos didn't take a wrong step outside of the 18-inch putt he missed.
A few friends rushed onto the 18th green to spray him with bubbly, and he took a swig to celebrate a week he never imagined.
"It's been such a bad year ball-striking wise," Campos said. "This game is so hard when things aren't going well, so hard to actually get yourself to be confidence. Things have just been so different this week. I just don't know. I'm just so grateful."
Irish up to No. 6 in AP Top 25; Dawgs surge to 8
Oregon remained the unanimous No. 1 team in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll Sunday after its close call at Wisconsin, while Notre Dame and Alabama each jumped up two spots and Georgia returned to the top 10.
LSU is unranked for the first time in two years.
The unbeaten Ducks are atop the AP Top 25 for the fifth straight week, passing Texas as the No. 1 team for the most polls this season. They received all 62 first-place votes for the third week in a row after scoring their fewest points in 37 games in their 16-13 win over Wisconsin.
Oregon also holds the top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings and will attempt to complete its first perfect regular season since 2010 when it hosts Washington in two weeks.
The Ducks were followed in the AP poll by No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Penn State and No. 5 Indiana for the second straight week. The top five could be due for a shakeup this week with Indiana visiting Ohio State for one of the most anticipated games of the season.
Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee rounded out the top 10. Georgia got a three-rung promotion to No. 8 with its 31-17 win over Tennessee.
Ole Miss, which was idle Saturday, rose one spot, and Tennessee dropped four but stayed in the top 10.
The Big Ten again held four of the top five spots, and the SEC had five of the top 10.
BYU's 17-13 home loss to Kansas dropped the Cougars from No. 7 to No. 14 and put them in a first-place tie with Deion Sanders' Colorado in the Big 12. The Buffaloes are No. 16.
A season-high four Group of 5 teams are in the Top 25. No. 12 Boise State remains the highest ranked of those programs and first in line for the guaranteed playoff spot. No. 23 UNLV joins Boise State as Top 25 Mountain West teams. No. 18 Army and No. 20 Tulane give the American Athletic Conference two ranked teams as well.
LSU, which dropped to 6-4 following its 27-16 loss at Florida for its third straight defeat, is out of the Top 25 for the first time since Oct. 16, 2022. The Tigers were ranked in 36 straight polls.
POLL POINTS
Oregon's win over Wisconsin was its third by three points or fewer this season. The Ducks' 16 points were their fewest since a 49-3 loss to Georgia in their 2022 opener.
Tulane went from No. 25 to No. 20 for the week's biggest promotion. The Green Wave's 35-0 win at Navy marked their first shutout of a conference opponent since 1960 and set up a matchup with No. 18 Army in the AAC championship game Dec. 6.
No. 16 Colorado has its highest ranking since it was No. 11 on Dec. 4, 2016, and No. 19 South Carolina has its highest since it was No. 13 on Sept. 21, 2014.
WHO'S IN; WHO'S OUT
No. 21 Arizona State is in the Top 25 for the first time since Oct. 10, 2021. The Sun Devils (8-2), who are coming off a win at Kansas State, have their most victories since 2021.
No. 22 Iowa State, which beat Cincinnati after two straight losses, is back following a one-week absence.
No. 23 UNLV, which was ranked for one week after a 4-0 start, has won four of its past five.
No. 24 Illinois makes its eighth appearance in the Top 25 this season, its most since 2001.
Missouri, Kansas State and Louisville joined LSU as teams knocked out of the rankings following losses.
CONFERENCE CALL
SEC: 7 (Nos. 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 19)
Big Ten: 5 (Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 24)
Big 12: 4 (Nos. 14, 16, 21, 22)
ACC: 3 (Nos. 11, 13, 17)
AAC: 2 (Nos. 18, 20)

RANKED VS. RANKED
No. 5 Indiana at No. 2 Ohio State: The magnitude of this game has increased with each week as the Hoosiers have rolled through 10 straight unranked opponents. Just how good are the Hoosiers? Finally, we find out.
No. 14 BYU at No. 21 Arizona State: The Sun Devils suddenly control their destiny thanks to Kansas' win over the previously unbeaten Cougars. A win here moves Arizona State into a tie with BYU for first or second place in the Big 12 and holding the tiebreaker for entry to the conference championship game.
No. 18 Army vs. No. 6 Notre Dame (at Yankee Stadium): This is the first time since 1958 that both teams are ranked entering their meeting. Notre Dame (9-1) has won 15 in a row in the series since Army (9-0) won that game in '58.
Hornets' Ball fined $100K for using anti-gay term
Charlotte Hornets star guard LaMelo Ball was fined $100,000 after using an anti-gay term during a postgame interview following his team's win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday.
The NBA announced the fine -- the maximum amount allowed by league rule -- on Sunday, saying Ball made an "offensive and derogatory comment" during his on-court interview.
Sideline reporter Shannon Spake asked Ball about the team's defensive strategy against Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo on the game's final play, and Ball used an anti-gay term while delivering his answer.
Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas was fined $40,000 for making a similar comment last season.
Ball, 23, had 26 points in Saturday's victory, including a pair of free throws with 7.3 seconds left that gave Charlotte the lead for good.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
