Brewers put Peralta on IL; closer Hader out, too

Published in Baseball
Monday, 23 May 2022 18:35

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers placed right-hander Freddy Peralta on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain Monday and put closer Josh Hader on the family medical emergency list.

Milwaukee filled their places on the roster by recalling right-handers Trevor Kelley and Miguel Sanchez from Triple-A Nashville. The moves come as the Brewers began a season-high 11-game, 10-day road trip Sunday at San Diego.

Peralta left the Brewers' 8-2 loss to the Washington Nationals on Sunday in the fourth inning with tightness in the upper area of his shoulder. Manager Craig Counsell said after Sunday's game that Peralta would go on the injured list and undergo an MRI on Monday.

"I was feeling it a little bit earlier, but that inning it got worse," Peralta said after the game. "That's why I made the decision to let them know and why I came out of the game."

Peralta, who turns 26 on June 4, is 3-2 with a 4.42 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 38⅔ innings this season. He made the All-Star team last year and went 10-5 with a 2.81 ERA and 195 strikeouts in 144⅓ innings.

Hader, 28, who is off to a spectacular start, has allowed five walks, two hits and no runs in 15 appearances. He has struck out 21 batters in 13⅔ innings. Opponents are batting .045 against him.

The three-time All-Star has converted 29 consecutive save opportunities, the longest active streak in the majors. His last blown save came July 7 against the New York Mets.

Cards put Molina on bereavement list, Matz on IL

Published in Baseball
Monday, 23 May 2022 18:35

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals placed star catcher Yadier Molina on the bereavement list Monday.

The Cardinals also announced that right-hander Alex Reyes is going to have shoulder surgery later this month.

The 27-year-old Reyes met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Monday. He wanted a second opinion about his ailing shoulder that has kept him on the injured list all season.

The move with the veteran catcher comes one day after Molina made his first career pitching appearance, working the ninth inning of an 18-4 victory at Pittsburgh. He allowed a pair of homers and four runs while finishing the Cardinals' three-game sweep.

The 39-year-old Molina is batting .239 with two homers and eight RBIs in 26 games in what likely will be his final big league season.

Rookie catcher Ivan Herrera was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. The 21-year-old Herrera, one of the organization's top prospects, is looking to make his big league debut.

Reyes was shut down this month after he experienced renewed shoulder soreness.

Reyes has battled injuries for several years. Tommy John surgery in 2017 cost Reyes the most time on the injured list, but his shoulder also has been a consistent source of concern for the last few years.

From 2016 to 2020, Reyes pitched just 72⅔ innings. He was made a full-time reliever last year, and he posted a 2.48 ERA in 72⅓ innings.

Reyes converted his first 22 save opportunities in 2021 before soreness and wildness in the strike zone resulted in him eventually losing his closer job to Giovanny Gallegos. Reyes surrendered Chris Taylor's game-ending homer in the NL Wild Card Game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Reyes, who turns 28 in August, has a $2.85 million salary this season in the second of three arbitration-eligible years.

Also Monday, the Cardinals placed left-hander Steven Matz on the 15-day injured list because of shoulder impingement and outfielder Dylan Carlson on the 10-day injured list because of a left hamstring strain.

Matz lasted only four pitches Sunday in his start against the Pirates before being pulled with stiffness in his left shoulder. It has been an up-and-down season for Matz, a free-agent addition this offseason from the Toronto Blue Jays. He entered Sunday with a 3-3 mark and a 6.03 ERA.

Carlson, who is hitting .247 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 39 games this season, was placed on the IL retroactive to Saturday.

The Cardinals also optioned Angel Rondon (1-0) to Triple-A Memphis on Monday. Rondon allowed just one hit in five innings in relief of Matz on Sunday for his first win in the majors, striking out four and walking three.

In addition, the Cardinals recalled left-hander Matthew Liberatore and outfielder Lars Nootbaar from Memphis. Liberatore, one of the Cardinals' top prospects, made his major league debut Saturday against the Pirates. He allowed four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 4⅔ innings during that start.

Pens GM: 'In a perfect world,' Malkin, Letang stay

Published in Hockey
Monday, 23 May 2022 15:10

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ron Hextall says he wants to find a way to have Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang stay with the club for the rest of their careers.

"In a perfect world, [Malkin] retires a Penguin," Hextall said Monday. "And I think Tanger's the same."

In a perfect world, anyway.

The NHL in the salary-cap era is hardly that.

Perhaps that's why, when Hextall was asked what was missing this season from a group that let a 3-1 lead slip away in a first-round loss to the New York Rangers, he said jokingly that "a little more cap space would be great."

He's not getting it.

The Penguins have habitually spent up to the cap limit during the hugely successful era led by Malkin, Letang and longtime captain Sidney Crosby. That "spend to win now" approach is not going to change with Fenway Sports Group now signing the checks after buying the club from Ron Burkle and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux last fall.

The question, however, is how much money the Penguins are willing to offer a pair of 35-year-old franchise icons who are less than two months away from entering free agency for the first time.

Letang hardly appears to have lost a step. The defenseman is coming off a season in which he collected a career-high 68 points while playing a bit more responsibly in his own end. He averaged a staggering 25 minutes, 47 seconds of ice time and said last week he'd like to play at least five more seasons.

Letang also is finishing a contract that paid him $7.25 million a season. Considering his fitness level and his production, it's reasonable to think he'd command a bit of a raise on the open market, though Letang said last week his preference would be to find a way to stay in Pittsburgh.

Malkin feels likewise, but his situation is thornier. He said "good players sign good contracts" last week, and while he scored 20 goals this season despite missing nearly half of the year while recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee, he was not particularly effective in 5-on-5 situations while commanding $9.5 million. He also turns 36 in July and has missed at least 10 games because of injuries nine times in his past 10 seasons.

Hextall stressed he would not provide details on the nature of the team's talks with Malkin and Letang but hinted he's not concerned about their age.

"They're both great athletes," he said. "They both have been here a long time. They're both performing at a high level right now. We'd certainly like to have them in the mix come September."

Malkin and Letang's respective statuses are the two biggest pieces of a very unwieldy puzzle Hextall has to piece together over the summer. Forwards Evan Rodrigues, Brian Boyle, Rickard Rakell and backup goaltender Casey DeSmith are set to become free agents, while forwards Danton Heinen and the enigmatic Kasperi Kapanen are restricted free agents.

Hextall did lock down one piece of the puzzle, signing forward Bryan Rust to a six-year deal over the weekend that will keep the versatile two-time Stanley Cup winner in the fold through 2028. Rust, who had 24 goals and 34 assists this season, underwent what Hextall called a minor procedure on one of his knees recently but should be ready well ahead of training camp.

By then Hextall will have clarity on his team's immediate future. He indicates he has it on its immediate past, praising the Penguins for their resiliency during an eventful season that included extended absences by Crosby and Malkin and a COVID-19 outbreak. Pittsburgh managed to extend its playoff streak to 16 straight years, the longest active streak in major North American professional sports.

Yet the Penguins also haven't made it out of the first round since 2018. That's not the standard for a team that plays in an arena with five Stanley Cup banners hanging from the rafters.

Six months into FSG's tenure, there appears to be no hurry to make drastic changes, including in the front office. Hextall, who took over in February 2021 after Jim Rutherford's abrupt resignation, appears as if he will get a chance to guide the team through at least the early stages of the twilight of Crosby's Hall of Fame career.

"Everything is good," Hextall said. "[Fenway Sports Group is] totally committed to winning. ... We've got some things that we're looking at in terms of adding to staff and stuff. We're moving along."

Flames F Lucic 'wasn't trying to hit' Oilers G Smith

Published in Hockey
Monday, 23 May 2022 15:16

Calgary Flames forward Milan Lucic insists he tried to prevent a collision with Edmonton Oilers goaltender Mike Smith in Game 3 of their second-round series on Sunday.

It was midway through the third period of that game when Smith was playing the puck behind Edmonton's net, and Lucic barreled in to send them both flying against the end boards.

Lucic was assessed a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct for the incident. Smith was forced by NHL concussion spotters to briefly leave the game and be assessed. It was 4-0 Edmonton at the time in a series that was tied 1-1.

Oilers backup Mikko Koskinen stepped in for 4:19 and didn't face a shot before Smith returned to close out a 4-1 Edmonton victory.

When Lucic addressed what happened for the first time on Monday, he denied any malicious intent towards Smith.

"I definitely wasn't trying to hit him," Lucic said. "I was braking. ... If I actually did charge, we both wouldn't be playing [in Game 4]."

That was in line with what Flames coach Darryl Sutter said after Game 3 in response to Lucic's ejection.

"They called it charging, correct?" he said. "Could you imagine if [Lucic] did charge? What would happen there? He actually tried to slow down a bit, I think. It is what it is. It's the score [being 4-0] and who it was."

Lucic will not face any supplemental discipline from the NHL for what happened, and he declined to comment further on the incident.

"I don't think I really want to get into what I was thinking," he said, "or what I was trying to do or if [Smith] sold it or if he didn't, a little bit."

In the moment, Smith said he wasn't sure what to make of the hit.

"I don't really know what happened," Smith said. "I was out playing the puck and all of a sudden I'm getting buried into the boards. When you're getting run through the end wall and not expecting it, it's not an ideal situation."

The hit itself was one thing. The bigger issue for Smith was being made to leave the game when he didn't feel it was necessary. Smith acknowledged his helmet flew off but said his head didn't hit anything.

"It's not an ideal situation to [exit] in the third period with 11 minutes left, but I get the reason for it," he said. "I think the player should have some say in that, but obviously it is what it is."

Smith will be Edmonton's projected starter again when it hosts Calgary in Game 4 on Tuesday.

As if Bubba Watson's Round 2 7-under 63 wasn't already impressive, the two-time Masters winner revealed that he accomplished the feat with a torn meniscus.

Watson had an inconsistent but, at times, impressive performance at the PGA Championship last weekend, ultimately finishing T-30 at the second major of the year. On Monday, Watson shared on social media that knee issues contributed to his inconsistent 72-63-73-75 scorecard.

Originally slated to play the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, this week, Watson posted saying, "I’m disappointed to have to pull out of [the Charles Schwab Challenge]. Recent knee issues turned out to be a torn meniscus, so I’ll be out for 4-6weeks. Hope to be back soon!"

The 4-6 week recovery time frame has Watson likely missing the third major of the year, the U.S. Open, which is slated for June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

City paint Manchester blue in PL title parade

Manchester City celebrated their fourth Premier League title in five years in spectacular style on Monday as fans thronged the streets of the city to party with their heroes for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

City nearly lost their crown to Liverpool on the last day of the season on Sunday when Pep Guardiola's side found themselves 2-0 down at home to Aston Villa before scoring three goals in a dramatic five-minute turnaround to win 3-2.

The players and staff, decked in City's sky blue and holding the Premier League trophy aloft, waved at fans from an open top bus as confetti rained down and blue smoke flares were lit along the route.

"It is amazing, to do this for the fourth time. We couldn't really do it last year because of COVID, but amazing to see so many people here to celebrate with us," midfielder Kevin De Bruyne said.

"The players have pushed me all the way. I've been here seven years and I love them. I have three more years and I'm definitely staying, this is where I want to be and win more trophies."

The Belgium international was named the Premier League's Player of the Season, having won the award for a second time after scoring 15 goals and providing eight assists -- including setting up the winner against Villa scored by Ilkay Gundogan.

Gundogan added: "Honestly I didn't feel that much [scoring the winner]. I got it on a plate from Kevin. Everything else was pure joy. Not a bad week, I cannot complain."

Guardiola, who became the most successful foreign manager in English football with his fourth league title, puffed away on a cigar and looked a rejuvenated man after a tense title race.

"Everybody knows it was an incredible achievement. This is the toughest league and we have won four since we've been here. I can see the happiness on the people's faces," Guardiola said.

"I am the best dancer of my staff, we will do it tonight. We saw the reaction when Ilkay Gundogan scored the winning goal."

PGA champ, Bama fan Thomas takes Jimbo jab

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 23 May 2022 15:38

PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, a former Alabama star and big Crimson Tide football fan, couldn't help but weigh in on the Nick Saban-Jimbo Fisher feud after winning a second Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday.

Thomas, who rallied from a 7-shot deficit in the final round at Southern Hills Country Club to win his second major championship, was asked if he would follow Saban's 24-hour celebration rule.

"Yeah, I got a 24-hour rule," Thomas told Sirius XM. "I'm not sure what Jimbo Fisher's rule is, but I guess he's gotta win something first before he figures out his rules."

Saban, whose teams have won six national championships at Alabama, caused a firestorm last week when he told a group of people in Birmingham, Alabama, that Texas A&M "bought every player" in its vaunted 2022 recruiting class. The Aggies signed five five-star prospects in the 2022 ESPN 300, with 20 of them ranked in the top 150.

In a fiery news conference the next day, Fisher denied the accusation and called Saban's comments "despicable."

"We never bought anybody," Fisher said. "No rules are broken. Nothing was done wrong. It's a shame that you've got to sit here and defend 17-year-old kids and families and Texas A&M. Because we do things right. We're always going to do things right. We're always going to be here. We're doing a heck of a job."

Fisher helped Saban guide LSU to a national championship in 2003, and he won a second one as Florida State's coach in 2013. His teams have had a 34-14 record at Texas A&M the past four seasons, losing at least four games in all but one.

Dwayne Haskins was legally drunk when he was struck by a dump truck on I-595 in Florida and killed on April 9, according to a toxicology report released by the office of the Broward County Medical Examiner on Monday.

According to the toxicology report, two separate samples taken from Haskins' body had alcohol levels of .20 and .24, both of which are above the legal limit in Florida of .08. According to the report, Haskins also tested positive for ketamine and norketamine, drugs that are used by medical professionals as anesthetics but that also have been known to be used recreationally.

The medical examiner ruled Haskins' cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries and the manner of his death as an accident.

The medical examiner's investigation report stated that when Haskins' car was found on the side of the highway, a "female companion" was in the vehicle and told the Florida Highway Patrol that Haskins had left the vehicle to try to find gas. The woman's relationship to Haskins was not known, according to the report.

According to 911 audio released in April, Haskins' wife told a 911 dispatcher that the quarterback was walking to get gas on the morning he was struck and killed. Kalabrya Haskins told the 911 dispatcher that her husband called her early April 9 and told her he was getting out of his vehicle to get gas and that he would call her back when he returned to the car. When she didn't hear back, she called 911 and requested that dispatch check on him.

Haskins, 24, was in Florida that weekend to train with Pittsburgh Steelers teammates. According to the investigation report, a Steelers official told the medical examiner's office that the night before his death, Haskins went to dinner with a cousin or friend, whose name was "Joey," and then later went to a nightclub, "possibly in Miami."

"They drank heavily and at some point, they got into a fight, separating," the report states.

A final crash report released by the Florida Highway Patrol in April said Haskins was walking on the westbound side of I-595 when he entered into the travel lanes and into the path of the dump truck, which was traveling in the center lane. The front left of the dump truck struck Haskins.

The report concluded that Haskins was improperly in the roadway, and the driver of the dump truck wasn't found to have taken any actions that contributed to the accident, based on the judgment of the investigation officer. Haskins was also struck by a second car traveling beside the dump truck that took evasive maneuvers to avoid him, but partially hit him on its right side undercarriage, according to the report.

ESPN's Brooke Pryor contributed to this report.

DALLAS -- One win away from returning to the NBA Finals, Stephen Curry says this is the best stretch of basketball this current Golden State Warriors team has played.

Having won four straight games dating back to Game 6 of the last round against Memphis, the Warriors look to complete a sweep of the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 on Tuesday.

"For sure," Curry said on Monday when asked if this is the best this team has played so far. "Because it is obviously magnified by the moment. You can look at other stretches where we probably played better offensively and better defensively in spurts. But to put it all together and for it to lead to wins at this stage, that is really all that matters."

The Warriors opened this season winning 18 of their first 20 games and started off 41-13 before some key injuries slowed them down. But they're finding a way to win when it matters most in this postseason, including the first three games of this Western Conference finals by 25, nine and nine points, respectively.

One thing that the Mavericks hope for is a repeat of what happened when the Warriors had their first crack at closing out the Denver Nuggets in the first round and then the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round, both on the road.

Golden State lost Game 4 in Denver 126-121, when it was going for a sweep. They would eventually eliminate the Nuggets in five games at home. And in the second round, the Warriors had a chance to seal the series in Game 5 only to be obliterated 134-95 in Memphis. The Warriors trailed by as much as 55 in that one-sided affair before winning the series in six at home.

"In Denver, we played sloppy in the first half," Curry said. "We were just kind of all over the place and gave them life, on top of them playing well. And that allowed their home crowd to get into it.

"In Memphis, we were outmatched, outgameplanned from the start and didn't respond well until Game 6. Take those lessons and understand that feeling it is extremely hard to close out any team, especially on the road, you got to bring it."

Draymond Green said on Sunday that the Warriors put a lot of their focus on getting Game 3 because they understood that with a former Hall of Fame player in head coach Jason Kidd and a likely future Hall of Fame player in Luka Doncic, the Mavericks won't quit.

But now the Warriors say they're going to have pick that focus up even higher to eliminate the Mavericks.

"I thought we were a little careless in Denver," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said at the team hotel after players and coaches gathered together. "And Memphis just destroyed us in that Game 5. I think our guys have improved and learned a lot during these playoffs and I would expect that we learned from those two games that we lost and we will have a more focused effort tomorrow."
