AD (eye) cleared to play; Wood suffers setback

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Anthony Davis said he is cleared to play in the Los Angeles Lakers' next game against the Memphis Grizzlies after exiting Sunday's win over the Toronto Raptors early with a left eye injury.

"A couple scratches in my eye," Davis said, his eye still appearing red and clouded, after practice Tuesday. "But as far as the medical term and everything all that, I'm not 100% sure. But I am cleared to play."

He visited an ophthalmologist Monday as a "precautionary" measure, sources told ESPN, after being poked in the eye by Toronto center Jakob Poeltl midway through the third quarter.

It was the second left eye injury Davis has suffered since the spring -- he was diagnosed with a corneal abrasion in March.

Davis tested protective goggles during practice Tuesday -- "He looked great," quipped Lakers coach JJ Redick -- but the All-Star big man does not plan to wear them against Memphis.

Davis said he tried goggles out before, during the 2020 NBA bubble when recovering from an eye injury, but abandoned them after "20 seconds of a game."

For Davis, it is simply a matter of preference.

"I wore goggles for three years when I was younger," Davis said, alluding to his bespectacled high school look. "I just don't want to [now], to be honest. Obviously, the doctors said I didn't have to. ... If it gets to that point where my eye doctor tells me that I need to wear them, then of course I will. But I've been cleared to go out and play without them."

Davis is averaging 31.2 points on 57.7% shooting, 10.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.3 steals per game this season.

While L.A. will welcome Davis back against Memphis, it continues to wait for backup big man Christian Wood to return.

Wood, who underwent an arthroscopic surgical procedure on his left knee in September after missing the last two months of last season with an injury to the same knee, experienced soreness during his ramp-up process.

"We're going to scale him back," Redick said of Wood on Tuesday. "We'll have an update in about four weeks."

Jets claim G Kahkonen off waivers from the Avs

The Winnipeg Jets reclaimed goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen off waivers from the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.

The Jets sent Kahkonen, 28, to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Kahkonen had spent the preseason with the Jets before being selected by Colorado off waivers on Oct. 11.

He played one game for the Avalanche, stopping 16 of 20 shots in a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 30.

Kahkonen is 49-68-15 with a 3.34 goals-against average, .898 save percentage and four shutouts in 140 games with the Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, New Jersey Devils and Avalanche.

Winnipeg also placed defenseman Logan Stanley on injured reserve, retroactive to Saturday. Stanley, 26, has one goal and two assists in 11 games this season, his fifth with the Jets.

Rodman, Marta, Chawinga up for NWSL MVP

Tuesday, 12 November 2024 12:50

Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga, who broke the single-season NWSL scoring record with 20 goals this campaign, headlines a group of five finalists for the league's MVP award.

Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda and midfielder Marta join United States internationals Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith, forwards for the Washington Spirit and Portland Thorns, respectively.

Chawinga and Kansas City face off with Banda, Marta and Orlando in a highly anticipated NWSL semifinal on Sunday (3 p.m. ET, ABC).

Banda and Chawinga, who are both in their first year in the league, were locked into a heated race for the Golden Boot throughout most of the season until Chawinga went on a record scoring run after the Olympics, scoring in seven of eight games. Banda finished the regular season with 13 goals.

Chawinga has scored in every regular-season game since June, except for the Current's scoreless draw in Orlando in September. That run includes scoring the lone goal in Saturday's 1-0 win over the North Carolina Courage in the quarterfinal.

Smith finished third in the league in scoring with 12 goals despite missing significant time after the Olympics due to an ankle injury. Rodman, who was also a central figure on the USWNT's Olympic gold-medal winning team, scored eight goals and added six assists for the Pride.

Marta, who turns 39 in February, enjoyed her best year as a pro since joining the Pride in 2017. She registered nine goals and an assist this year.

Eighteen of the 24 finalists for awards are from the top four teams in the league, mirroring a season in which all four top seeds advanced to the semifinals this past weekend, and fourth and fifth place were separated by 16 points in the regular season.

The Orlando Pride lead all teams with seven nominations across the six awards. Marta is also nominated for the newly created Midfielder of the Year award, and Orlando head coach Seb Hines is the favorite to win Coach of the Year after the Pride set a new points record (60) while going unbeaten through the first 23 games of the season and winning the Shield.

Washington Spirit midfielder Croix Bethune leads the Rookie of the Year chase after tying Tobin Heath's single-season assist record. Bethune registered 10 assists before sustaining a season-ending meniscus tear while throwing out a first pitch a Washington Nationals game. She was participating in the ceremony after earning an Olympic gold medal with the USWNT.

The final round of voting uses a weighted scale of players (40%), owners/GMs/coaches (25%), media (25%) and fans (10%).

Priestman out as Canada coach over spy scandal

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 12 November 2024 12:50

Bev Priestman will not return as head coach of the Canadian women's soccer team following an independent report into the use of drones to spy on an opponent at this year's Paris Olympics, Canada Soccer said on Tuesday.

Priestman and two other team officials were banned from any soccer-related activity for one year by FIFA after New Zealand complained that Canadian staff flew drones over their training sessions before their opening match in Paris.

But following an independent review commissioned by Canada Soccer, the national governing body said Priestman and the other two individuals currently suspended by FIFA would not return and a search for a new head coach would commence shortly.

Alzarri Joseph has returned from suspension to rejoin the West Indies squad for the final three matches of their T20I series against England, but star allrounder Andre Russell has been ruled out of the series with a left ankle sprain.
The pair are part of two changes to the hosts, who are 2-0 down heading into the final leg of the series in St Lucia. Joseph will replace his replacement Shamar Joseph, with seam bowling allrounder Shamar Springer coming in for Russell. West Indies need to win in the third T20I on Thursday to keep the series alive.

Alzarri was handed a two-match ban by Cricket West Indies after leaving the field without permission during the third ODI against England, leaving West Indies a man short in the field. Having apologised publicly for the incident, and privately to one-day captain Shai Hope, his return was expected and necessary given the scoreline.

Rovman Powell has struggled to keep a lid on Jos Buttler's charges, who have chased down targets of 159 and 183 with ease, losing just five wickets across both fixtures in Barbados. Though West Indies have fallen foul of the toss on both occasions, there has been a distinct lack of cutting edge with the ball.

The inclusion of Springer also gives Powell options to work with, having yet to strike the right balance with the make-up of his bowlers. Springer made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka last month, taking 1 for 25 and 1 for 24 in his two caps so far.

The loss of Russell during the first T20I was put into context by the performance of Terrance Hinds in the second. The 32-year-old suffered an ignominious debut on Sunday, scoring five at No.11 and seeing his two overs concede 24 runs without a dismissal.

West Indies T20I squad: Rovman Powell (capt), Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Terrance Hinds, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Springer

Diamondbacks tab Phils' Kaplan as pitching coach

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks hired Brian Kaplan on Tuesday to be the team's pitching coach.

Kaplan has spent the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies as an assistant pitching coach and director of pitching. The Phillies had one of the best starting rotations in the big leagues last season with Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez and Ranger Suarez.

He was also a consultant for the Phillies from 2019-21.

Kaplan replaced Brent Strom, who was fired after the D-backs finished last season with a 4.62 ERA, which ranked 27th among the 30 teams. Arizona missed the playoffs despite scoring the most runs in baseball.

Kaplan is also a co-founder of Cressey Sports Performance, a training facility used by stars like Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Corey Kluber and Devin Williams.

Sources: Angels, d'Arnaud reach 2-yr., $12M deal

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 12 November 2024 13:25

The Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday continued their aggressive move-making early in free agency, agreeing to a two-year, $12 million contract with catcher Travis d'Arnaud, sources told ESPN.

The Atlanta Braves declined to pick up a one-year, $8 million option on d'Arnaud last week, and the Angels struck with a multiyear offer for the veteran catcher, who will be 36 on Opening Day.

In a market thin on catching, d'Arnaud was one of the best players available at the position. He'll serve as the backup to Logan O'Hoppe, the 24-year-old who hit 20 home runs and looked like a foundational piece for Los Angeles going forward.

The Angels already have added two other veterans to a team that went 63-99 this year, trading for designated hitter Jorge Soler and giving right-handed starter Kyle Hendricks a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

Adding d'Arnaud, who hit .238/.302/.436 with 15 home runs in 341 plate appearances, helps fortify a roster that lacked depth last year and adds to a payroll approaching $170 million. Much of it is dominated by outfielder Mike Trout and third baseman Anthony Rendon, who will make a combined $75 million this year.

The Angels' attempt to compete in 2025 is closely aligned with the strong likelihood that they'll be ineligible for a top 10 pick in the 2026 draft. If Los Angeles receives a pick in the top 6 during the 2025 draft lottery -- almost a certainty -- the Angels will be ineligible to do the same in 2026 because of anti-tanking rules in the collective-bargaining agreement.

With the incentive to lose not strong, the Angels are trying to build around Trout and a cadre of young players: O'Hoppe, shortstop Zach Neto, first baseman Nolan Schanuel and right-handed starter Jose Soriano. Infielder Luis Rengifo, outfielder Taylor Ward and left-handed starter Tyler Anderson figure into the Angels' hopes of winning next year.

A 12-year veteran, d'Arnaud spent the last five years with the Braves. Over 884 games in his career, he has hit .248/.309/.426 with 123 home runs, 438 RBIs with the Mets, Dodgers, Rays and Braves, with whom he won a World Series in 2021.

A Silver Slugger winner in 2020 and All-Star in 2022, d'Arnaud has caught 20.4% of baserunners in his career.

Franco faces weapons charges after altercation

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 12 November 2024 13:25

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco will face charges of illegal use and possession of a firearm related to his arrest in an armed altercation in the Dominican Republic countryside, public prosecutors said Tuesday.

Franco, 23, was arrested in San Juan de la Maguana, 116 miles west of Santo Domingo after what police said was an altercation Sunday in the parking lot of an apartment complex in which guns were drawn. He had been held for questioning by police but is expected to be granted provisional release Tuesday, with terms of his bail yet to be defined.

Prosecutors said a Glock with its magazine and 15 rounds of ammunition but no registration papers was found in Franco's black Mercedes-Benz at the time of the altercation.

Police said the firearm was registered to Branly Fernando Lugo Rodríguez, who Franco said was his uncle.

The armed altercation occurred Sunday between Franco, another man and the father of that man over Franco's relationship with a woman prosecutors said lived in the apartment complex. The dispute took place in the parking lot of the apartment complex after Franco arrived there.

There were no injuries, and the involved parties agreed they will not press charges.

No court date has yet been set for Franco's arraignment. The use and possession of illegal firearms carries a maximum sentence of three to five years plus a fine.

Franco, who was placed on indefinite administrative leave from Major League Baseball on Aug. 22, 2023, is due to stand trial in the Dominican Republic on Dec. 12 in a separate case involving charges of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking that could result in a sentence of up to 20 years.

Franco was placed on MLB's restricted list in July, sources had told ESPN, after prosecutors in the Dominican Republic accused him of having a sexual relationship with a then-14-year-old girl.

He is also under an MLB investigation under its domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy until the case is resolved.

The court summoned Franco and the mother of the girl for the trial after an investigation that opened in 2022. The case will be heard by a panel of three or five judges.

Franco cannot leave the Dominican Republic under his bail agreement as he awaits the trial, but he is free to travel within the country, police confirmed.

The Rays gave Franco an 11-year, $182 million extension in 2021, just 70 games into his major league career.

He made the All-Star team for the first time in 2023.

Scotland 'getting closer' to world's best - Dalziel

Published in Rugby
Tuesday, 12 November 2024 11:47

"I think we've taken a lot of learnings from that period, learnings from the Six Nations. We've grown the group, we're evolving the whole time. We feel we are getting closer.

"We have all the components. We just need to find a way of, once we've worked for 60 minutes, to keep ourselves in there, we need to find a way of getting over that last hurdle.

"If it was easy, everybody would be doing it. I definitely feel in the last few Tests we've fronted up and we're sure we can be competitive away from home or at home against the top teams."

After facing Portugal, Scotland round off their Autumn Nations Series against an Australia side who stunned England at Twickenham last time out.

Dalziel wants his team to emerge from the campaign with three wins from four and says that, while there will be changes to the team for the match against Portugal, there will be no complacency against the team ranked 15th in the world.

"We've got to pay ultimate respect to Portugal," Dalziel said. "They're coming to play against a Six Nations side away from home for the first time, 55,000 people at Murrayfield.

"They've got a game that can rival anybody, we've seen that at the World Cup. Their defeat against Fiji, they were very competitive.

"They should have done better against Wales where they had opportunities to win that game. We'll give them the full respect.

"There will be a couple of players I'd imagine freshening up, but we'll pick a strong Test team to win this weekend. We want to finish with three wins."

I will always carry semi-final loss with me - Genge

Published in Rugby

He added: "It is a huge part of their DNA from a young schoolboy which is what they cherish, and it also helps that they have 150kg human beings.

"Everyone needs to roll their sleeves up and be absolutely invested, then we will have it out.

"Credit where credit is due, they have a great set piece, but I am not just going to roll over and let them have it."

Despite that challenge for the England pack, Genge says preparation remains the same.

"You can wear boys out by doing too many scrums, you could do 100 scrums this week and it isn't going to change the outcome on Saturday," Genge said.

"You have got to stick to our process, I think our scrum has been good over the last two weeks."

England have narrowly lost their last two games against Australia and New Zealand, with both coming down to the final play.

"It is tough when you are up against it and you need to shake that negative energy I guess and move on," the Bristol Bears prop added.

"A week like South Africa at Twickenham is probably the best week to do so.

"Everyone thinks they are amazing, myself included, I think they are a great team. I'd love to get after the best."
