One of Cricket Australia's broadcast partners has been forced to apologise after Shane Warne and Andrew Symonds made derogatory remarks about Marnus Labuschagne.

Warne and Symonds were preparing to commentate on Friday's BBL match between Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades seemingly unaware that the feed was live on Kayo, the streaming arm of Fox Sports, with the start of play delayed due to the third Test match between Australia and India still taking place in Sydney.

The conversation started plainly enough with Warne suggesting that Labuschagne should be brought on to bowl. However, Symonds then referred to "ADD", presumed to be attention deficit disorder, in relation to Labuschagne, with Warne following up with a swipe at his mannerisms when he bats.

The final part of the brief segment involved Symonds referring to giving Labuschagne "the hogpile" - a group of people jumping on each other.

Warne: "Give Marnus a bowl."

Symonds: "Do something... that or his ADD."

Warne: "Jesus, it's annoying. 'No!!!' [imitating Labuschagne batting] Just f***** bat properly."

Symonds: "You'll have to give him the hogpile, 'mate, if you keep that shit up, we're gonna squash your guts out of your arse."

After the footage was posted on social media, Kayo tweeted: "Our stream started early and caught some unacceptable comments. On behalf of @kayosports and the commentary team, we unreservedly apologise."

Labuschagne is currently part of the Australian team in the ongoing Sydney Test.

11.56am local/6.26am IST: Ponting's not surprised...

...by Josh Hazlewood's incredible fielding efforts. Here's what he said on Channel Seven:

"I'm actually not surprised. I spent the two weeks with the Aussie boys coming from the IPL in quarantine in Sydney and ran a few fielding drills. Big Josh hit the stumps more than anybody else from that mid-on, mid-off position. The most impressive thing with that bit of fielding, he was actually getting himself set, you can see he was getting set. He knew if he made that run-out he had to pick the ball up on the half-volley to be in a position to release it basically as soon as it gets into his hands. It's a brilliant piece of preparation before the throw. It hit half way up middle stump as well. It didn't just glance the stumps, middle stump flush."

11.49am local/6.19am IST: Chris Rogers on Steven Smith

Here's more from Gnasher: Everyone will now be talking about that Josh Hazlewood run out, or at least they should be, but I've just been listening to some interesting stuff from Chris Rogers on SEN Radio about Steve Smith and his mindset and finding motivation.

"Sometimes the best players, you think they are kind of bullet proof, they have enough self-belief that they wouldn't care what other people think but actually the inspiration they get is trying to prove people wrong," Rogers said. "It's as though they work with this chip on their shoulder and they are consistently trying to prove people wrong. And if you think back to where Steve Smith came from, he was a guy who first got picked as a legspinner, and the amount of energy he has had to put in to turn himself into one of the world's best batsmen is incredible and says something about him. There's this unbelievable desire…to show people that he's one of the best batsmen in the world, if not the best batsman." Rogers then recalled a story from the 2013-14 Ashes where Smith had struggled in the first two Test and there were murmurings about his place. He and Rogers went to a hotel in Perth to catch up with some mutual friends… "He got really emotional and really vulnerable, admitted how hard he was coping with it. He was very upset. I saw a pretty vulnerable young kid. They aren't bullet proof, these guys. It's interesting what inspires him. If you look back at the first two Tests where he didn't quite perform it even seem to us, even in the last Test, that he was a bit flat, didn't have the same kind of spark. Clearly he's recognised that and he's almost 'how do I create this story that the world is against me'. It's a bit of that Jose Mourinho idea. I don't remember people saying he was out of form. It is really interesting, the best in the world, whatever sport you play, whatever you do for work, a lot of the times it's those little things that inspire you and that's what keeps driving you."

11.02am local/5.32am IST: What's on Paine's mind?

Here's Andrew McGlashan on the first hour of play and a little observation at the end of that DRS sequence:

It's been an interesting first hour to the day. Pat Cummins has made the key breakthrough in another outstanding spell to back up his work from yesterday and there has been plenty of action when Nathan Lyon is in action. Shortly after Ajinkya Rahane's wicket there was a review for a catch at short leg against Cheteshwar Pujara - reviewed by the Australians - which was turned down. Matthew Wade obstructed the view of the leg-side Hot Spot and there was no evidence Pujara had hit the ball from any other angles. At the end of the process there was clear frustration from Paine when he spoke to umpire Paul Wilson, appearing to suggest he believed there was a spike on Snicko, although the protocols appeared to have been followed correctly. Perhaps a hangover from Paine's decision when he was batting in Melbourne? It's already been an interesting match for DRS with yesterday's appeal against Rahane when he padded up to Lyon and Wilson appeared to have a change of heart as to whether a shot had been played.

10.28am local/4.58am IST: More of the same...and then a wicket

India ended their day making nine off the last ten overs yesterday, and it's generally acceptable to attribute such a scoring rate to the caution of batsmen trying to bat to stumps. In this case though, it was mostly a reminder of how good this Australian bowling attack is - and that the pitch is showing glimpses of being up and down. And there's more of exactly that in the opening half hour today. They've come with containment plans, with catchers in the leg side and a short-pitched strategy, and some balls kicking up the batsmen. Apart from one half-volley that Ajinkya Rahane has put away, Australia have given nothing away. Only 11 off the first seven overs of the day.

India's batsmen did cop some criticism for their scoring rate last evening, but Ajinkya Rahane's wicket - chopping Cummins on, a short one dipping in and getting big off the pitch - was just proof that looking to play attacking shots is just not a straightforward proposition.

9.55am local/4.25am IST: Welcome back!

Even well past the halfway stage of this series, these teams continue to set us up for the best days. A day of ten wickets yesterday, but also a day of 238 runs - figures that show that the quality of bowling has sustained. By the end of the day, Australia used the wickets of India's openers to their advantage and completely shut off scoring options for Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, who have been greeted by probably the brightest and warmest morning of the Test this morning. It's also the flattest pitch of any in the series so far. One might even argue that it's the kind of surface Pujara feasts on. It's the one thing India haven't had yet this series, a feast for their No. 3 man. He'll be well up for this opportunity today and that is challenge number one for Australia's bowlers.

Sources: Avalos returning to Boise St. as coach

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:50

Boise State football is hiring Oregon defensive coordinator Andy Avalos, a former player and assistant at the school, as its next head coach, sources confirmed to ESPN.

Avalos, 39, spent the past two seasons at Oregon, helping the Ducks to consecutive Pac-12 championships. He came to Oregon from Boise State, where he spent seven seasons as an assistant, the past three as the team's defensive coordinator.

A former All-WAC linebacker at Boise State, Avalos replaces Bryan Harsin, who left last month to become Auburn's head coach. Avalos coached under Harsin at Boise State and both played and coached for Chris Petersen at the school. Petersen, who resigned as Washington's coach after the 2019 season, assisted Boise State with its coaching search, according to sources.

Last week, Boise State hired Jeramiah Dickey as its new athletic director. Dickey on Friday afternoon tweeted that the football coaching hire was "coming soon."

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, a star quarterback at Boise State for Petersen, announced Saturday that he would no longer be pursuing the school's head-coaching job and had agreed to a multiyear contract with the Cowboys. Moore and Avalos had been considered the front-runners to replace Harsin, although Boise State also considered Montana State coach Jeff Choate, a former assistant at the school, as well as Florida offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, according to sources.

In 2019, Avalos was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, recognizing the nation's top assistant coach, after overseeing an Oregon defense that finished ninth nationally in scoring. The Corona, California, native helped Boise State to three Mountain West Conference titles as an assistant.

The Idaho Press first reported Boise State's decision to hire Avalos.

Cowboys' defensive failures cost Nolan, Tomsula

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:50

FRISCO, Texas -- Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula will not be returning to the Dallas Cowboys for the 2021 season, the team announced Friday.

Last season, the Cowboys (6-10) allowed the most points in franchise history (473) and finished 31st in the league in run defense. In the season-ending loss to the New York Giants, they allowed 23 points, including 20 in the first half, to an offense that had not scored more than 19 in five weeks.

The unit played better down the stretch with 12 takeaways in the final four games after getting just 11 in the first 12 games, but that was aided in part by facing backup quarterbacks in Cincinnati, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

"I am appreciative of my relationships with both Mike and Jim, and I am grateful for the contributions that both of them made to our team under difficult circumstances in 2020," coach Mike McCarthy said in a statement. "These are never easy decisions to make, and we wish them, and their families, the very best in the future."

Speaking on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas at different times during the season, owner and general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones lamented the jarring scheme switch -- from a 4-3 look to a hybrid look -- made by the Cowboys during an offseason in which the coaches could only meet virtually with the players.

Unable to get hands-on experience until the start of an abbreviated training camp, the Cowboys defense struggled badly. They finished 23rd in yards per game (31st vs. the run, 11th vs. the pass) and 28th in points (29.6). The Cowboys allowed 69 plays of 20 yards or more, including 51 passes and 18 runs.

In the three other times the Cowboys allowed a franchise record in points, the organization either made a scheme change or a coaching change.

After allowing 436 points in 2010, Jason Garrett was named the full-time head coach after taking over for Wade Phillips at midseason, and he hired Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator. In 2013, they allowed 432 points in Monte Kiffin's first year as coordinator, and he was replaced by Rod Marinelli. After giving up 405 points in 2004, Bill Parcells switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme but kept Mike Zimmer as his coordinator.

Head coach Mike McCarthy and Nolan have a long background together. In 2005, Nolan hired McCarthy as his offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers, which helped propel him to earning the Green Bay Packers head job a year later.

But the defense could not find its footing. While they suffered some injuries to Leighton Vander Esch (collarbone, ankle), Trysten Hill (knee) and Trevon Diggs (foot), they were not hit as hard as the Cowboys' offense.

Their bigger free-agent pickups were either hurt in training camp (defensive lineman Gerald McCoy), did not make the team out of camp (safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix), were traded (Everson Griffen) or were released because of poor play in the middle of the season (defensive tackle Dontari Poe, cornerback Daryl Worley).

If the Cowboys look in-house for a replacement, George Edwards spent the year as a senior defensive assistant. He was Zimmer's defensive coordinator from 2014 to 2019.

But the first question that must be answered is what type of scheme the Cowboys want to use. In Green Bay, McCarthy employed a 3-4 scheme for most of his tenure. If he wants to continue with the hybrid look Nolan attempted to use, adding players to fit the scheme will be an offseason priority. In all but three years of his time in Green Bay, the Packers used a 3-4 scheme.

Texans CEO wants sit-down with Watson on GM

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:50

HOUSTON -- Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair acknowledged he hasn't heard from Deshaun Watson since he hired Nick Caserio as general manager but said he hopes to speak with the franchise quarterback soon about the move.

"I've come to understand that it's been reported that Deshaun feels left out of the process, but he and I had several visits and I understood his point of view before meeting with candidates," McNair said Friday. "I've reached out to Deshaun about Nick's hire, and I look forward to him getting back to me when he returns from his vacation."

On Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Watson offered input on potential general manager candidates but that the Texans did not consider or consult with those endorsed by their franchise quarterback.

"Some things never change...." Watson tweeted Tuesday, with sources telling ESPN that the quarterback's feelings were directed at the way business was conducted by the Texans.

Watson met with McNair over Zoom during the season to discuss candidates and the future of the franchise, and in his end-of-season news conference, Watson said he told McNair he hoped the team keeps offensive coordinator Tim Kelly on staff.

McNair, who held a news conference for the first time since taking over for his father in 2018, spoke while introducing Caserio. When Caserio was asked about the rumors that Watson wanted to be traded after finding out about his hire on social media, the general manager said Watson "is our quarterback."

"Once we have an opportunity to spend some time together, we'll further our discussion," Caserio said. "Can't tell you how much respect and admiration that I have for him for who he is as a player and what he means to this franchise."

If the Texans were to trade Watson, they would have to absorb a salary-cap charge of $22 million.

The Texans hired Caserio just over four months after firing Bill O'Brien, the team's former head coach and general manager. Despite hiring a coach who had spent the previous 20 years in New England, McNair said the Texans aren't trying to duplicate the Patriots' culture.

"With respect to their organization, we do not consider ourselves Patriots South," McNair said. "We are here to lead this team the Texans way."

Harbaugh reaches extension to stay at Michigan

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:50

Jim Harbaugh has reached a contract extension to remain Michigan's football coach through the 2025 season, athletic director Warde Manuel announced Friday.

"I continue to believe that Jim is the right man to lead our program in pursuit of Big Ten and CFP championships," Manuel said in a statement. "Our program didn't achieve at a level that anyone expected this year but I know those setbacks will drive the coaches, players and staff moving forward. Jim is a tireless worker and competitor. Following the completion of the season we talked for many hours on what it will take for Jim to lead and get us back on the right trajectory."

Harbaugh's new contract will pay him a base salary of $4 million in 2021, which will increase to $4.426 million in 2025. He can earn a maximum bonus of $3.475 million in each year of the contract, including $1 million bonuses for winning the Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff National Championship, and $500,000 bonuses for winning the Big Ten East Division and reaching the CFP.

Michigan would owe Harbaugh $4 million if it fired him in 2021, a guarantee that goes down $1 million each subsequent year of the contract. Harbaugh's buyout to leave Michigan begins at $2 million in 2021 and drops by $500,000 in each subsequent year until 2025.

"Over the past few weeks, Warde and I had discussions that have been honest, open, insightful and constructive in moving our football program forward," Harbaugh said in a statement. "Discussions that I look forward to continuing over the months and years ahead. We have a plan.

"There is work to be done and challenges to be addressed. These challenges are being addressed as we continue to strive for excellence in the classroom and championships on the field, a message that I hope is noted in the language of our agreed-upon contract."

Harbaugh had one year left on his initial contract at Michigan, which paid the coach slightly over $8 million in 2020.

Michigan and Harbaugh began discussing a new contract after the team's regular season ended in November. Harbaugh spent much of the past few weeks vacationing in California but returned to Ann Arbor this week, a source said.

The Wolverines finished the 2020 season at 2-4, canceling their final three games because of COVID-19 concerns within the program.

Harbaugh, a former star quarterback at Michigan, is 49-22 in six seasons at the school and 34-16 in Big Ten play but is coming off by far his worst season at his alma mater. Michigan won 10 games and finished in the top 15 in three of his first four seasons but has yet to defeat rival Ohio State and has dropped four straight bowl games.

Michigan fired defensive coordinator Don Brown last month, and six other assistants have contracts that expire Sunday.

The school said in its release that Harbaugh was "in the process of evaluating and putting together his staff for the 2021 season."

ESPN's Dan Murphy contributed to this report.

Towns (wrist) upgraded to questionable vs. Spurs

Published in Basketball
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:46

Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns -- who has missed six games because of a left wrist injury -- is expected to be a game-time decision Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs, sources told ESPN.

The Timberwolves upgraded Towns' status to questionable on Friday. He has been working out with the team this week and has been eager to return as soon as possible.

Towns suffered the injury after landing on his left hand in a Dec. 27 win over the Utah Jazz. The star big man had season-ending surgery on his left wrist a year ago, but this injury was in a different spot, sources said.

Towns, 25, is averaging 19 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5 assists across the two games he has played this season.

Sources: 76ers expect to lose players to tracing

Published in Basketball
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:46

The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to have multiple players miss time due to contact tracing and are still awaiting results of Friday's coronavirus testing, sources tell ESPN.

Those players were in close contact with Seth Curry, who sources say returned a positive test on Thursday. The team learned of Curry's positive test near the start of its 122-109 loss to the Nets in Brooklyn on Thursday night, sources said.

Curry, who sat out Thursday's game with left ankle soreness, spent the first quarter on the bench before the Sixers were made aware of a positive test, sources said. He was wearing a mask and was seated next to assistant coach Sam Cassell and center Joel Embiid.

Curry then left the court area and headed into isolation. He left the Barclays Center separately from the team. The Sixers stayed overnight in New York.

Philadelphia is next scheduled to play Saturday at home against the Denver Nuggets.

Utah's Ingles ends iron man streak at 384 games

Published in Basketball
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:46

Utah Jazz forward Joe Ingles' iron man streak will end in Milwaukee on Friday night after 384 consecutive regular-season games played.

Ingles, who held the longest active streak in the NBA, will miss the game with right Achilles soreness. He hadn't missed a game since Dec. 16, 2015, against New Orleans. Including the postseason, Ingles had played in 418 straight games.

Over the years, he played through a middle finger sprain and left ankle sprain and even after learning that his son, Jacob, was diagnosed with autism.

"I know he'd be playing if he could," Snyder said ahead of Friday's tip-off. "There's been a lot of times that he's played through pain and probably an injury that he hasn't told us about at times. But, obviously, you miss a player in the short run like Joe, but he'll be back.

"He's just gotta get healthy and we try to do what we can do to make up for not having him. But as much as anything, it makes you pause for a second and you reflect on what a streak of consecutive games like that means and what it says about Joe, his toughness, his commitment, what type of teammate he is. You pause and reflect for a second and you understand why you respect him like you do."

With Ingles out, Cory Joseph of the Sacramento Kings is the NBA's active leader at 274 straight games. A.C. Green holds the NBA's all-time record at 1,192 straight games.

Ingles, 33, is averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists this season for the Jazz. His streak was the longest by a Jazz player since John Stockton from 1997-2003, when he played 442 consecutive regular-season games.

Sources: Nuggets' MPJ (protocol) out indefinitely

Published in Basketball
Friday, 08 January 2021 16:46

Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. will remain in the league's health and safety protocol for an indefinite period and continue to be tested daily for the coronavirus, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Porter, 22, has been in the protocol since last Thursday as a result of contract tracing. He has missed the Nuggets' past four games since posting 30 points and 10 rebounds in a loss at Sacramento on Dec 29.

A talented prospect who found his way into the team's playoff rotation last season, Porter was inserted into Denver's starting lineup to begin the year.

Porter is averaging 19.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in four games this season.
