Lawsuit No. 14 calls Watson a 'serial predator'

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 23 March 2021 09:24

HOUSTON -- A 14th lawsuit alleging sexual assault and inappropriate conduct was filed against Deshaun Watson by a woman who says she believes the Houston Texans quarterback is a "serial predator."

The lawsuit, which was filed Monday night and appeared on the Harris County District Clerk's website Tuesday morning, alleges that Watson "assaulted and harassed Plaintiff by exposing himself to her and touching her with his penis."

The incident allegedly took place in California, just the second of the 14 allegations to take place outside the Houston area.

The traveling massage therapist alleges that when she arrived at the address Watson gave her, he led her to a room and "locked the doors behind him." After Watson allegedly "forced Plaintiff's hand onto his penis" during the massage, he allegedly told her, "I will not have you sign a NDA but don't ever talk about this."

The plaintiff also alleges that Watson reached out on Instagram in December "acting as if nothing had happened."

Watson has denied wrongdoing, and his attorney Rusty Hardin said Friday that the allegations against the quarterback are "meritless."

"I have never treated any woman with anything other than the utmost respect," Watson said in a statement he posted on Twitter on March 16.

Tony Buzbee, the attorney for the plaintiffs, said in an Instagram post on Saturday that he would submit affidavits and evidence from several women to the Houston Police Department and the Houston district attorney Monday morning. He also said he will request that a grand jury consider the evidence and determine whether charges should be brought against Watson by the state of Texas.

Dane Schiller, a spokesperson for the Harris County district attorney, said Monday that it would be "inappropriate" for the DA's office to comment on the lawsuits against Watson.

"It would be inappropriate for the District Attorney's Office to comment on a civil lawsuit, and we refrain from publicly discussing allegations in any matter until and if a criminal charge is filed; we do this out of fairness to all," Schiller said in a statement.

Last week, NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said "the matter is under review" pertaining to the league's personal conduct policy, and the Texans said in a statement that they would stay in close contact with the NFL during its investigation.

Europe dominant in Doha, surprise names prevail.

Europe enjoyed success after success, the only interloper being Thailand’s Suthasini Sawettabut in the women’s singles event. The no.3 seed, she justified her status as did Britt Eerland of the Netherlands, the top seed, Monaco’s Yang Xiaoxin, the no.4 seed and Russia’s Polina Mikhailova, the no.5 seed.

Rather differently, the one further name on the women’s list was not to be predicted, Sweden’s Linda Bergström, the no.17 seed responded and responded in style.

One surprise qualifier; in the counterpart men’s singles event, four places available, it was the full house, the complete set, not one of the top names qualified!

Slovakia’s Wang Yang, the no.6 seed emerged the most prominent name to book a Tokyo place, the Czech Republic’s Lubomir Jancarik, the no.30 seed, the biggest surprise name. Sandwiched in between Russia’s Kirill Skachkov, the no.13 seed, and Hungary’s Bence Majoros, the no.15 seed, seized their opportunities.

Britt Eerland (Netherlands)

Winner of the junior girls’ singles title at the 2010 European Youth Championships, Britt Eerland beat Spain’s Galia Dvorak (11-5, 12-10, 12-10, 11-7) to book her place in Tokyo.

Nowadays, crucial to national team success, the win underlined the consistent progress made in recent years; in February 2020 Britt Eerland was the runner up at the CCB Europe Top 12 in Montreux.

It will be her second Olympic Games, she played in the women’s team event in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Facing Austria and partnering Li Jiao, it was doubles defeat at the hands of Li Qiangbing and Sofia Polcanova (14-16, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9) followed a similar outcome against Liu Jia (11-4, 11-6, 7-11, 15-17, 12-10).

Linda Bergström (Sweden)

A backspin player, totally different to all her colleagues who have worn the Swedish shirt in the past 70 and more years, Linda Bergström was the surprise name in Doha. She beat Ukraine’s Margaryta Pesotska, the no.2 seed, to seal her place (11-7, 13-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9).

It was an even bigger surprise considering Margaryta Pesotska’s national team colleagues, Tetyana Bilenko and Ganna Gaponova are both defenders!

It will be the first Olympic Games appearance for Linda Bergström.

Polina Mikhailova (Russia)

Clever changes from defence to attack secured a Tokyo place for Polina Mihailova, the no.5 seed, against Suthasini Sawettabut, the no.3 seed (11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8). On their one prior international meeting, the 2016 ITTF World Tour Qatar Open, by the narrowest of margins Suthasini Sawettabut had prevailed (10-12, 11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 13-11).

Five years later big match experience counted, in 2019 Polina Mikhailova had won the ITTF Challenge Plus Nigeria Open, having in 2012 won on the ITTF World Tour in Belarus; those wins made the difference.

It will be for Polina Mikhailova her second appearance in the Olympic Games; she competed in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro; she was beaten in the second round of the women’s singles event by Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus (9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-7, 11-9).

Yang Xiaoxin (Monaco)

In the closest deciding match of all, Yang Xiaoxin, the no.4 seed, overcame Spain’s Maria Xiao, the no.13 seed (14-12, 8-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 12-10). The fast attacking close to the table play, long pimpled rubber on the backhand, proved a key factor in the success.

Also, the fact that on the ITTF World Tour in 2014 in Zagreb and in 2016 in Olomouc, Yang Xiaoxin had won the women’s singles title gave her the edge at the vital times.

The success means Yang Xiaoxin makes her Olympic Games debut

Suthasini Sawettabut (Thailand)

Incisive, positive, Suthasini Sawettabut beat Maria Xiao, to secure the last remaining place (13-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8). The win was as history predicted; commencing with the 2007 Swedish Junior and Cadet Open, they had met four times; all four had been won by Suthasini Sawettabut.

Despite the fact that Suthasini Sawettabut was amongst the favourites to progress, she had no prominent international title to her name; her prior best, women’s singles runner up at the 2019 ITTF Challenge Indonesia Open.

Notably, Suthasini Sawettabut competed in the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games; she was beaten in the bronze medal match by Korea Republic’s Yang Haeun (9-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7, 11-6). Later, she competed in the women’s singles event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, she beat Congo Brazzaville’s Han Xing (11-8, 10-12, 7-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9), before losing to Li Jiao of the Netherlands (12-10, 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 11-5).

Lubomir Jancarik (Czech Republic)

A series of thoroughly professional performances, the no.30 seed, a semi-final success against Great Britain’s Liam Pitchford, the top seed (11-6, 2-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10), followed by victory in opposition to Ukraine’s Kou Lei, the no.12 seed (11-5, 14-12, 11-9, 11-6) proved the winning formula.

Present time and time again on the international scene but never beyond the men’s singles early rounds, it was a landmark win for the 33 year old; his best on the ITTF World Tour, under 21 men’s singles runner up in 2008 in Kuwait.

Lubomir Jancarik competed in Rio de Janeiro in 2016; he was beaten in the men’s singles first round by Uzbekistan’s Zokhid Kenjaev (8-11, 11-2, 13-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9).

Bence Majoros (Hungary)

Impressively, Bence Majoros, the no.15 seed, overcame Belgium’s Florent Lambiet, the no.32 seed, to reserve his Tokyo place (11-6, 11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 11-8). Bence Majoros had lost three of the four most recent meetings at international level against Florent Lambiet; significantly, he had won the most recent, the 2017 ITTF Challenge Belgium Open in de Haan (12-10, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10).

Doha underlined progress, at the 2018 ITTF Challenge Slovenia Open, Bence Majoros had won the under 21 men’s singles title.

It is an Olympic Games debut for Bence Majoros.

Wang Yang (Slovakia)

Defensive skills to the fore, an unusual occurrence even more so when both players extolled the art. Wang Yang, the no.6 seed, secured his Tokyo place courtesy of success in opposition to Panagiotis Gionis of Greece, the no.10 seed (3-11, 11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7).

Very much the 26 year old seized the chance afforded; arguably the best result of his career, on the ITTF World Tour in 2014 he had been a men’s singles semi-finalist in Hungary, the same on the ITTF Challenge Series in 2018 in Slovenia.

He competed in the men’s singles event in Rio de Janeiro; he was beaten in round two by Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna (11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6).

Kirill Skachkov (Russia)

One year earlier Liam Pitchford had been a sensation, at the 2020 ITTF World Tour Qatar Premium Open during the first week of March, he had beaten Xu Xin at the semi-final stage (3-11, 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 15-13, 11-9), prior to losing to Fan Zhendong (11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-7). One year later, it was very different, he was beaten in the Tokyo deciding match by Russia’s Kirill Skachkov, the no.13 seed (11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 14-12, 11-7).

A notable achievement for the 33 year old, who has always proved most competitive but has yet to really make an impact on the international stage. On the ITTF World Tour he won the under 21 men’s singles title in 2007 in Bremen, as well as the following year in Warsaw and more significantly, at what was to prove a happy hunting ground, the city of Doha!

Alongside Alexey Smirnov and Alexander Shibaev, Kirill Skachkov represented Russia in the men’s team event at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Russia lost 3-1 to China in the opening round; Kirill Skachkov was beaten by Zhang Jike (11–5, 12–10, 11–7) but partnered Alexey Smirnov to men’s doubles success against Ma Long and Wang Hao (11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6). It is the only match Ma Long has ever lost at an Olympic Games!

England are at 'end of an era' - Ugo Monye

Published in Rugby
Tuesday, 23 March 2021 03:59

England are at the end of an era and need to make sweeping changes, says former wing Ugo Monye.

England finished fifth in the Six Nations after suffering defeats by Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the same campaign for the first time since 1976.

"As a group, this is the end of an era," Monye told Rugby Union Weekly.

"Eddie Jones is the right man, but he needs to freshen up the squad and coaching staff, both in terms of personnel and philosophy."

Head coach Jones was appointed to replace Stuart Lancaster in the wake of the team's pool-stage exit at the 2015 Rugby World Cup and he led them to the final four years later, where they were beaten by South Africa.

He has a contract until the end of the next tournament in France in 2023, but has come under pressure with his side lacking a clear style or consistent results so far this year.

Former England scrum-half Danny Care believes the Rugby Football Union have reached a point where they have to "stick or twist" with Jones, either backing him through to the end of France 2023 or allowing a new man to come in.

"Either they say this is our man and throw everything at him, or they decide to change it," he said.

"Look at like South Africa. 18 months before winning the the last World Cup, they brought in Rassie Erasmus as head coach.

"It had a drastic change on that whole squad and nation. The RFU has a big, big decision on their hands.

"People are falling out of love with England Rugby - we need to inspire kids in the here and now with young players, exciting rugby."

Monye believes that England need new leadership on the pitch to bring new ideas.

The most-capped players in England's team in Ireland were scrum-half Ben Youngs (109 caps), fly-half George Ford (77) and captain and inside centre Owen Farrell (93).

"I think a team can be together too long," said Monye.

"You need someone to burst into that leadership group and try and change a philosophy. We need to break up this holy huddle if we want to invoke change."

The final finale

The destiny of this year's title will be decided on Friday night in Paris when Scotland and France meet in a fixture postponed from its original February date by a Covid outbreak in the France camp.

France, who kept alive their hopes of lifting the trophy with a dramatic late win over Wales on Saturday, need a bonus-point win and a 21-point winning margin to take the title.

A 20-point winning margin and six or more tries would also be enough to unseat Wales at the top of the table.

Care thinks Wales can start planning celebrations with some confidence.

"Surely Scotland are not going to lose by 21 points," he said.

"Scotland had the best defence in last year's Six Nations, and they still have a very good defence.

"I think everyone has gone France mad. They only just scraped home against Wales who were down to 13, and we didn't see their attack particularly against England, when they lost to a team that finished fifth in the tournament."

But Monye is not so certain that France are chasing a lost cause.

"If it is the Scotland who won 11-6 at Twickenham, France are not scoring four tries," he said.

"But if it is the Scotland who lost to Wales and Ireland, I could see France doing it.

"France go to gear one to five in the space of one offload."

The coach on the other end of the phone scanned ESPN's 2021 NHL position-by-position ranking player pools, his stress level increasing.

"We're talking about the best of the best," he said, sighing. "Now you're asking me to vote for the best of 'the best of the best.'"

Well, yeah, that's sort of the point. We wanted those inside the league to cut through the media narratives, ignore (but appreciate!) the enduring legacies and reveal which star players have "it" and which ones don't. Which, admittedly, can be a stressful venture.

Here's how it worked: Surveys were conducted over the past two months. Respondents were asked to rank their top 10 players at center, winger, defenseman and goaltender, based on a predetermined list of the top 20-30 players at each position. Players who were ranked in the top 10 on each ballot were given a numerical score -- No. 1 earned 10 points, No. 2 earned 9 points and so on.

There were 10 NHL players surveyed -- seven skaters, three goaltenders. There were 10 people on the hockey operations side surveyed, from coaches to general managers to player personnel executives.

Here are the positional rankings for wingers for the 2020-21 season, according to those in the NHL we surveyed. The rankings for defensemen (Wednesday), centers (Thursday) and goalies (Friday) will follow this week. Stats are collected from sites such as Natural Stat Trick, Hockey Reference and Evolving Hockey. There are some surprises here, to be sure.

1. David Pastrnak, Boston Bruins
152 points | Age: 24

Why was the 24-year-old Bruin ranked as the No. 1 winger in the NHL?

"I don't know, maybe his personality?" joked a rival NHL forward. "No, I think some of these rankings are just too close to call. That's why it's tough to make an 'order' of any kind. But Pastrnak has absolutely been on fire when he's not been hurt the last few years."

Pastrnak has 100 goals in his last 157 games, tied with Alex Ovechkin for the best goals-per-game rate since 2018-19 (0.64). He shared the Rocket Richard Trophy with Ovechkin last season as the league's top goal-scorer, with 48.

Pastrnak has 26 points through 21 games this season, including 14 goals. He leads the Bruins in expected goals above average (7.8) this season.

Oh, and not that it matters, but our anonymous NHL player is correct: Pastrnak is one of the league's delightfully goofy players, including a recent interview after the NHL's Lake Tahoe game where he lamented missing a locker room dance party to "Barbie Girl" while wearing "Macho Man" Randy Savage sunglasses.

Pastrnak was given three first-place votes -- by an NHL general manager, a forward and a goaltender -- and six second-place votes. In total, Pastrnak was in the top five on 18 of 20 ballots, more than any other player was.

He got the nod for the top slot. But it was close.

Bosz out at Leverkusen after Bundesliga collapse

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 23 March 2021 05:31

Bayer Leverkusen have parted ways with head coach Peter Bosz following a slump in the league with only eight points from nine games in the second half of the season.

His last match was Sunday's 3-0 defeat at strugglers Hertha Berlin. Bosz was appointed midway through the 2019-2020 season.

- Bundesliga on ESPN+: Stream LIVE games and replays (U.S. only)

"Because of the footballing development in recent weeks, we have come to the conclusion that parting ways with Peter Bosz cannot be avoided," Bayer sporting executive Rudi Voller said in a statement on the club's homepage.

Leverkusen were unbeaten and seemingly set for a title challenge before a last-minute 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in late December. In 2021, they have only picked up three wins and three draws from the 13 games which have followed. They also crashed out of the Europa League and the German Cup.

Leverkusen were beaten home and away in the Europa League round of 32 by Swiss side Young Boys, while they suffered a shock exit against Essen in the German Cup round of 16.

Leverkusen, who had led the Bundesliga table after 12 games, are now in danger of missing out on a European competition entirely.

Prior to taking over at Leverkusen, Bosz had led Ajax to the 2017 Europa League final before a short spell in charge of Borussia Dortmund.

Hannes Wolf, 39, will take over from Bosz until the end of the season. The former Dortmund youth coach had stints at Stuttgart, Hamburg and Genk and had been working as a Germany youth coach recently.

Peter Hermann, who has previously worked as Jupp Heynckes No. 2, will also return to the club as an assistant coach.

Belize team bus stopped by armed gang in Haiti

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 23 March 2021 05:31

Belize's football federation (FFB) expressed "disappointment and disgust" on Monday after the bus carrying the squad to their hotel in Haiti was stopped by an armed gang on motorcycles.

The football team arrived in Haiti on Monday morning ahead of Thursday's World Cup qualifier between the sides in Port-Au-Prince.

- Stream FC Daily on ESPN+

The incident occurred when the team bus made its way from the Toussaint Louverture airport to the hotel with a police escort.

"Despite the four-man police escort, the team bus was stopped by an uproar of insurgents with assault rifles on motorcycles and police escorts were forced to negotiate with them for the team bus to continue its journey to the hotel," the FFB said in a statement.

"We are pleased to report that our 'Jaguars', although shaken by the terrible experience, are safely at their hotel."

The bus was then allowed to resume its journey to the hotel after the police escorts negotiated with the insurgents.

Team co-captain Deon McCauley described the incident as "a moment of intense fear" and other members of the squad told Belize News 5 TV station they hoped to get out of Haiti as soon as possible.

"I am happy everyone is safe, and I commend you guys for being brave," McCauley said in a statement issued by the federation. "Let's continue to stick together and please make the best decisions when it comes to the team."

The FFB has spoken to FIFA and CONCACAF and "is doing everything possible to get them [the team] to safer grounds." The FFB also stressed that "the safety of the team is our top priority."

Members of the Haitian Football Federation (FHF) visited the Belize delegation on Monday evening to express their solidarity and offer their support.

The qualifier is part of the first round of CONCACAF games for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Belize have never qualified for the World Cup finals while Haiti qualified only once, in 1974.

Information from Reuters was included in this report.

The 2021 summer transfer window is likely to follow a similar path to the January one, when clubs were hindered by the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there could still be some big names on the move, even if the days of a €100 million-plus transfer are gone (for now).

Here are five deals that we would love to see come off when the window opens again.

Jadon Sancho, Borussia Dortmund to Man United -- €80m

Sancho has been linked with a big-money move for years now, having made his name in Germany over the past few seasons after leaving Manchester City's academy for a €10m move to Dortmund in 2017. Now a fully fledged England international, the winger has scored 46 goals in 130 games for his club and has been repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United.

United came close to signing him over the summer, but Dortmund refused to listen to any offers below their stated asking price of €120m, and Sancho's form dipped at the start of the season. Indeed, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said: "Maybe Jadon had subconsciously prepared for a move a bit. I believe he at least thought about it that much that he lost a bit of his ease."

But now that he's fit and firing once more, Sancho will be back on the agenda and is United's top target again. We'll gloss over the fact that United don't actually need a winger, as they have far more serious deficiencies up front and in the centre of defence, but a move for Sancho may just persuade his Dortmund teammate Erling Haaland to make the move to Old Trafford in the coming years.

The summer transfer market needs something big to spark it into life and, even at a reduced €80m, this could be the one.

Lionel Messi, Barcelona to PSG -- free

If it wasn't for the fact that the 33-year-old Barcelona legend's contract was expiring in 2021, you could expect a fee of over €100m to sign arguably the greatest player of all time. Indeed, Manchester City no doubt considered making an offer over the summer when Messi sent his burofax announcing that he wanted to leave, before eventually deciding to stay at Camp Nou rather than take the club to court over a disputed release clause in his contract.

Now he'll almost certainly depart -- even in light of Joan Laporta winning the Barcelona presidential elections on March 7 -- and there are only two clubs who can afford his wages: Man City and PSG. A reunion with Pep Guardiola at City is attractive, but we'd rather see him land in Paris for a couple of years on the proviso that the French champions hold on to Neymar and Kylian Mbappe for a little while longer in order to form the "M 'n' M" trio up front.

With that strikeforce, surely PSG's long wait for Champions League success would be over.

Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid to Man City -- free

If City fail to land Messi, they can console themselves by snapping up another of La Liga's superstars for nothing. Real Madrid centre-back Ramos has been at the club since 2005 but, at the age of 34, is now struggling to persuade them that he is worth a new contract.

Here's where City come in. They need a new centre-back, with 20-year-old Eric Garcia leaving for Barcelona when his contract expires in the summer, and Ramos would be the perfect replacement. He's still got a few years at the top of the game, and wouldn't it be incredible to see how he works under long-time adversary Guardiola at the Etihad?

Will this be a flash in the pan for Matthew Hoppe?

Kasey Keller and Steve Cherundolo debate whether or not his hat trick is a sign of things to come for Matthew Hoppe.

Matthew Hoppe, Schalke to Bayern Munich -- €20m

Schalke are a mess, with massive debts and the dramatic sacking of their entire backroom staff, and they will struggle to avoid relegation to the 2. Bundesliga this season. They've already banked €18.5m from Juventus for the signing of United States midfielder Weston McKennie, and it's entirely possible that they'll look to bring in some funds from letting star striker Hoppe leave this summer, too.

The 19-year-old American hit the headlines with a hat trick against Hoffenheim in January that ensured every club in Europe knew his name, and he has been recently linked with Liverpool and Tottenham, though Bayern Munich should certainly take note as they seek a long-term replacement for the 32-year-old Robert Lewandowski.

Let's assume they can't afford Dortmund's Haaland (with Dortmund unlikely to sanction ANOTHER player leaving for their bitter rivals unless forced to) and so Hoppe could be an excellent backup. "Since I've been in Germany, I've tried to model my game after Haaland and Lewandowski," he told OneGoal in 2020.

Seems like a match made in heaven to us.

Gianluigi Donnarumma, AC Milan to Juventus -- free

Sometimes a good free transfer to a rival can really shake up the transfer window. Think Sol Campbell from Tottenham to Arsenal back in 2001, or Lewandowski from Dortmund to Bayern in 2014. This one isn't the same as if Donnarumma were to join Inter from AC Milan, but it would still be incredible.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper is one of the best young players in Europe, and if Juventus are looking for a way to get back on top of the Italian game next season, there's no better way than signing Donnarumma from one of their title rivals for nothing.

It's unlikely to happen, sadly, as Donnarumma will set to pen a new contract at Milan. But this move would stun Italy, and there's the added nugget that he would replace the legendary Gianluigi Buffon, who is likely to retire this summer at the age of 43, for club as well as country.

Scores of 23 in 22 balls and 47 in 31 balls against South Africa have taken Shafali Verma back past Beth Mooney to the No. 1 position in the T20I batter's rankings for women in the latest update, released on the day of the final game of the three-match series, which South Africa have already won 2-0.

Verma had reached the top spot after scoring 163 in five innings at a strike rate of 158.25 at the 2020 T20 World Cup. Mooney was the top-scorer then, with 259 runs in six outings, and moved to the top after the home series against New Zealand in September - she scored only 37 runs in three innings then, but with India not playing any international cricket till this series, Mooney went past Verma on the table.

Lizelle Lee, meanwhile, had a mixed run in the rankings. She slipped from the perch in the ODI rankings within a week of going past Tammy Beaumont because she missed the last game of the series against India, but her 45-ball 70 in the second T20I took her up three spots to No. 11 in the rankings for the shortest format.

Laura Wolvaardt has had two unbeaten innings in the T20I series so far - both from the middle order - scoring 9 and 53, and that took her up to 24th place, while Sune Luus (up five places to 38th) and Nadine de Klerk (up three places to 74th) were the other South Africans to gain.

Lower in the table, scores of 52 and 31 from Harleen Deol made her zoom 262 places to No. 85.

There were some movements in the bowlers' chart too. For South Africa, de Klerk has moved up five places to 68th, Ayabonga Khaka has gone up two places to 35th and Nonkululeko Mlaba has shot up 14 places to 75th. For India, Rajeshwari Gayakwad has risen from No. 34 to No. 25.

In ODIs, apart from Lee losing the top spot among batters, Marizanne Kapp has moved from fourth to second among bowlers and overtaken Stafanie Taylor to No. 2 in the list of allrounders, which is led by Elysse Perry. Mignon du Preez has gained four slots to reach 16th position after her knock of 57 in the last ODI, and Anneke Bosch has progressed in both the batting and bowling lists - 58 slots to 70th among batters and five places to 85th among bowlers. Tumi Sekhukhune has advanced eight places and is 37th in the bowlers' list.

India lost the ODI series 4-1 - which took South Africa up to No. 2 in the team rankings, while India stayed at No. 4 - but their captain Mithali Raj moved up one place to eighth after hitting an unbeaten 79.

Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was left disappointed with the crucial missed chances at a crucial stage in the second ODI against New Zealand in Christchurch. The home side went on to win the game by five wickets, after they recovered from 53 for 3 chasing 272, and surviving two dropped catches in the space of eight balls with as the game got closer.

Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim started the rot when he dropped Jimmy Neesham's straightforward edge off Taskin Ahmed in the 36th over. In the following over, Mahedi Hasan dropped an easy caught and bowled chance from Tom Latham, who was on 58. New Zealand needed 91 runs in the remaining 13.3 overs at this point.

Iqbal, who himself ran out Devon Conway just a couple of overs before the dropped catches, said that they could have seen a different story unfold had the catches been taken.

"We should've won this game," Iqbal said. "The bowlers created chances, we couldn't hold on. The dropped catches, you know. When situation comes, you have to do things 100%. Disappointed today. Batters did really well. It was a different surface, a bit slow, 271 was a decent score. And when the chances came, we couldn't hold on. Quite disappointing."

Iqbal said that Bangladesh are no longer being impressed by their improved performances, but want to win games, and look forward to taking the third ODI in Wellington seriously.

"(Mohammad) Mithun was fantastic, Mushi (Mushfiqur Rahim) as well. Anyway, I thought it was a much improved game. We are not here to improve our cricket but to win. See people will drop catches. It hurts. If we took our two chances, it was game on.

"People don't miss catches willingly, it happens to everyone. When the next chance comes, we need to grab with both hands. We just have to be positive in Wellington and give a crack to them again," he said.

There is likely to be renewed calls for Rahim to give up the wicketkeeping after yet another crucial dropped chance. The calls were at their loudest during the 2019 World Cup when he botched an important run-out against New Zealand. Rahim has already given up the gloves in Tests where Liton Das now keeps wickets.

For the first time in Indian cricket, the BCCI has conducted two Fast Track Level 2 coaching courses at the NCA in Bengaluru for international and domestic players who have played over 75 first-class games. Some of the prominent names who attended the courses included former players Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Abhinav Mukund, Ramesh Powar, Wasim Jaffer, Sarandeep Singh, Debasis Mohanty, Vinay Kumar, L Balaji and Robin Uthappa.

Indian players have in the past taken similar certification form the ECB and Cricket Australia, but for the first time the BCCI has initiated such a move to promote home-grown coaching at the NCA, under its head Rahul Dravid.

A BCCI release stated: "A wide array of topics was covered, including Skill Acquisition, Applied Biomechanics in Pace Bowling, Spin Bowling, Batting, Wicket-Keeping, Building Social and Personal Competence, Video Analysis etc."

The courses were held in a hybrid model because of the ongoing pandemic, where phase 1 was conducted online over four days and phase 2 was held at the NCA over the next four days.

"The experience gained through the rigours of playing first-class and international cricket coupled with knowledge of the technical and tactical intricacies of our game makes for a great combination for a coach," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said in the release. "I believe we have some of the best coaching talents in the world and these courses conducted by the NCA will greatly benefit not only those that have participated in it but also the next generation of cricketers who will be coached by these coaches."

Board secretary Jay Shah said: "It is heartening to see former and current cricketers taking up this opportunity to upskill themselves as coaches. The future of Indian Cricket continues to remain bright given the continued involvement and enthusiasm of some of our cricketers even post their playing careers."
