Prasidh Krishna called up for ODI series against England

Published in Cricket
Thursday, 18 March 2021 23:08

M Prasidh Krishna is the brand new face in the Indian ODI squad, which was named on Friday morning for the upcoming three-match series against England. The 18-member squad also includes Suryakumar Yadav, who made a rousing start to his international career with a match-winning half-century in the fourth T20I against England on Thursday, which helped India pull level with one game to go. The ODIs will be played in Pune on March 23, 26 and 28.

The last time India played ODIs, in Australia late last year, the squad had Mayank Agarwal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Manish Pandey, Navdeep Saini and Sanju Samson, all of whom are missing from the line-up this time. Rohit Sharma, who was back in India before linking up with the squad during the Test series in Australia, is back in the frame now, as the designated vice-captain, while Rishabh Pant, Krunal Pandya, Washington Sundar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Siraj have also been drafted in.

Krishna, the 25-year-old quick from Karnataka, has had limited exposure in days' cricket - just nine first-class games since his debut in 2015 - but has been a prominent name in limited-overs formats for a while, having played 48 List A games (81 wickets at an average of 23.07) and 40 T20s (33 wickets at 35.84 and an economy rate of 8.49). A part of the Kolkata Knight Riders set-up since 2018, Krishna has played 24 games for the franchise in the IPL, returning 18 wickets with an economy rate of 9.33.

There was talk of Krishna being in the national frame, especially for the shortest format, before the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the world, when Virat Kohli had said that the young bowler "could possibly be an X-factor" for India in the run-up to the T20 World Cup, which ended up being postponed. It is scheduled to be played later this year, in October-November, in India.

Of the players missing, Bumrah was granted leave for the last Test against England and the entire white-ball leg of the series because of his marriage, while Shami has been out of action since fracturing his wrist while batting in the first Test in Australia last December. Pandey, too, has been nursing a tennis-elbow condition, which forced him to miss the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s, though he has since played two games for Karnataka in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Overall, the expanded squad includes eight frontline batting options, including designated wicketkeepers Pant and KL Rahul, allrounders Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Washinton Sundar, fast bowlers T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Krishna, and spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

Drake survives, earns first tourney win since '71

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Drake won its first NCAA tournament game in exactly 50 years Thursday, overcoming two long scoring lulls to rally past Wichita State 53-52 in a First Four matchup of No. 11 seeds at Purdue's Mackey Arena.

The Bulldogs' last tournament win came on March 18, 1971, when they outlasted Notre Dame in overtime in a Midwest regional semifinal matchup in Wichita, Kansas. Drake finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference this season but reached its first NCAA tournament since 2008 as an at-large. Coach Darian DeVries' team advances to face USC, the No. 6 seed in the East Region, on Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

After a potential game-winning 3-pointer by Wichita State's Alterique Gilbert fell short, Drake players and coaches saluted a group of fans standing in a corner of Mackey Arena, where a reduced capacity of 1,350 watched the First Four matchup.

"It's been a long time, and our guys knew that," DeVries said. "Getting the opportunity to be here was something these kids dream about, coaches we dream about it. And then to get a win for our program that hasn't happened in 50 years, it's really exciting. These guys have fought through so much and for them to be the ones that were able to get us one, I think is really deserving."

Drake went 9 minutes, 56 seconds of the first half without a field goal but rallied late to trail by only a point a halftime. The Bulldogs went nearly six minutes without a point in the second half, falling behind nine at one point before charging back with five 3-pointers. They ended the game on a 22-11 run.

"We just thought the ball was sticking a little bit," DeVries said. "We weren't getting it side to side enough throughout the game. We wanted to get some interior touches as well, but most importantly was just getting the ball moving. And then it helped, we started knocking down a few shots to loosen it up as well."

Drake started the season 18-0, overcoming a COVID-related pause that caused five games to be postponed, but lost two all-conference players. Star point guard Roman Penn suffered a season-ending foot injury Feb. 21, and forward ShanQuan "Tank" Hemphill, the Missouri Valley Newcomer of the Year, broke his foot Feb. 10. Hemphill underwent surgery and made his first appearance since the injury Thursday night, scoring three points and grabbing four rebounds in 10 minutes.

Sophomore guard Joseph Yesufu led Drake with 21 points on 8-of-21 shooting, logging all 40 minutes in the win.

"We got off to a great start on the year, we're 14-0 and then we had to go through a three-week COVID pause," DeVries said. "That was a hard thing for our guys to do and then you lose two first-team all-league guys in Roman Penn and ShanQuan Hemphill after that. We had to play 14 games in the last 33 days of the season. These guys have really had to battle and fight their way through adversity to play their way into the tournament, so this opportunity isn't taken lightly by any of us.

"All year, they've battled back from deficits and today was no different."

Source: Bears cut Fuller; WR Robinson signs tag

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 18 March 2021 23:01

CHICAGO -- The Bears are releasing veteran cornerback Kyle Fuller in a cost-cutting move that frees up $14 million worth of salary cap space, a league source confirmed to ESPN.

Wide receiver Allen Robinson will remain in Chicago after signing his franchise tender Thursday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. He is set to make $18 million for the 2021 season.

Fuller, 29, was entering the final year of his contract and set to count $20 million against the cap. The Bears will have to eat $6 million in dead money.

Drafted by the Bears with the 14th overall pick of the 2014 NFL draft, Fuller is a two-time Pro Bowl selection who set a career high with seven interceptions in 2018.

Last year, Fuller tied for 94th in the league with one interception and 51st in pass breakups with eight.

Fuller appeared in every game for the Bears over the course of his career except for the 2016 season, which he missed in its entirety because of a lingering knee issue.

The Bears also announced the release of veteran cornerback Buster Skrine on Tuesday.

Chicago could look to fill the void at cornerback from within in the form of Duke Shelley or Kindle Vildor, two younger corners who received ample playing time last year. The side opposite of Fuller's old post will be occupied by Jaylon Johnson, whom the Bears drafted last spring in the second round out of Utah.

NFL Network first reported the news of Fuller's release.

The Bears placed the franchise tag on Robinson before the March 9 deadline.

Robinson, 27, caught a career-high 102 passes in 2020, the final season of a three-year, $42 million ($25.2 million guaranteed) deal he signed with the Bears as a free agent in March 2018. He also had 1,250 yards receiving and six touchdowns.

The seven-year NFL veteran had set his previous career best for catches in 2019, when he had 98 receptions for 1,147 yards and seven touchdowns for one of the league's worst offenses.

In 2018, Robinson, though still not completely recovered from a season-ending knee injury he suffered in Week 1 of the 2017 season while with the Jacksonville Jaguars, tallied 55 receptions for 754 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games as Chicago went 12-4 and reached the playoffs.

He spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Jaguars, who selected him in the second round of the 2014 draft. He was selected to his only Pro Bowl in 2015, when he set career bests with 1,400 receiving yards and 14 touchdown receptions, which tied him for the NFL lead.

Robinson has 457 receptions for 5,999 yards and 39 touchdowns in 88 career games.

White: Khabib retired; Chandler-Oliveira for title

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 18 March 2021 23:01

Khabib Nurmagomedov, arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, is officially retired, and even UFC president Dana White is ready to move on.

White told ESPN on Thursday that he and Nurmagomedov met in Las Vegas, and the undefeated lightweight champion reiterated he does not intend to fight again. As a result, the UFC is finalizing a lightweight title fight between Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira for UFC 262 on May 15, according to White.

"Khabib is retired and doesn't wanna hold up the division," White told ESPN, via text message. "Tonight was our final meeting and he is retired."

Nurmagomedov (29-0) announced his retirement from MMA in October, but White repeatedly said he held out hope the Dagestani champion would fight again. Nurmagomedov defended the lightweight championship three times, against Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor.

Looking ahead, Chandler (22-5) is a former three-time Bellator MMA lightweight champion. He signed with the UFC in 2020 and made his promotional debut in January against Dan Hooker at UFC 257 on Fight Island. He scored a first-round knockout in just 2:30.

Fighting out of Sanford MMA in South Florida, Chandler is 6-1 in his past seven contests.

Oliveira (30-8) is currently on an eight-fight win streak, including a dominant decision over former interim champion Tony Ferguson at UFC 256 in December. The 31-year-old has been on a tear since moving up from featherweight in 2017, with a record of 9-1. He has finished eight of those nine wins at 155 pounds.

Edwards, 19, third youngest with 40-point game

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 18 March 2021 22:58

PHOENIX -- Rookie Anthony Edwards scored a career-high 42 points, Karl-Anthony Towns added 41 and the Minnesota Timberwolves suddenly look like a respectable NBA basketball team.

The Timberwolves used the dominant Edwards-KAT combo and a fourth-quarter comeback to stun the Phoenix Suns 123-119 on Thursday night. They've won three of five games since the All-Star break.

At 19 years and 225 days old, Edwards became the third-youngest player in NBA history with a 40-point game.

"Our future success starts now," Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.

The Timberwolves still have the worst record in the NBA at 10-31 but have played much better over the past couple of weeks. Edwards and Towns carried Minnesota in this one, pouring in points from all over the floor.

After the game, Edwards gave away his jersey to his "blood brother" who was at the game and gave his shoes to some other fans. The 19-year-old was grinning from ear to ear as he walked off the court.

"We're winning," he said. "It's always happy when we're winning."

Edwards, who was the No. 1 overall pick out of Georgia last summer, made 15 of 31 shots. Towns was even more efficient, making 15 of 24 shots, including 5 of 7 3-pointers. Juancho Hernangomez dunked with 2.5 seconds left to seal it.

It was just the second time in Minnesota's franchise history that two players scored 40 points in the same game.

"Unbelievably special," Finch said. "They played pretty efficient. KAT almost has a triple-double. They were carrying us."

Jevon Carter hit a 3-pointer just before the third-quarter buzzer to give the Suns a 91-83 lead. But the Timberwolves kept the game tight, and Towns tied it at 107 after a 3-pointer with less than five minutes remaining. Towns also added 10 rebounds and eight assists.

These were the kinds of performances the Timberwolves envisioned when they selected Edwards, who has a sweet jumper and produced a few highlight-reel dunks on Thursday. The 6-foot-4 guard is averaging 30.6 points over his past five games.

Mets' Carrasco injured, likely to miss opener

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 18 March 2021 15:15

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- - New Mets pitcher Carlos Carrasco strained his right hamstring during conditioning after throwing one inning of batting practice Thursday and seems certain to miss the start of the season.

New York was waiting for an MRI for an indication on how long Carrasco will be sidelined.

"He was running sprints and he felt a pull," said Mets manager Luis Rojas, who said he spoke with Carrasco while the pitcher was face down on a bed in the trainer's room.

A right-hander who turns 34 on Sunday, Carrasco has has not appeared any any exhibition games this year.

New York opens April 1 at Washington. Carrasco had been projected to be part of the rotation with two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman, Taijuan Walker and David Peterson.

Rojas said left-hander Joey Lucchesi and Jordan Yamamoto are candidates for fifth starter along with a trio of non-roster pitchers: Jerad Eickhoff, Corey Oswalt and left-hander Mike Montgomery.

"We have pretty good depth," Rojas said. "We have a lot of guys that can come and be in that fifth spot."

Carrasco is in remission from leukemia and got the coronavirus vaccine, causing him to start spring training workouts behind other players. He then stopped throwing for a stretch because of elbow soreness.

Carrasco was traded by Cleveland with All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor on Jan. 7 for young infielders Andrés Giménez and Amed Rosario, and two minor league prospects: right-hander Josh Wolf and outfielder Isaiah Green.

The Mets also are missing reliever Seth Lugo, who had surgery Feb. 16 to remove a bone spur from his pitching elbow. He is on track to resume throwing around opening day.

Carrasco missed three months of the 2019 season while fighting leukemia. He pitched through the pandemic last year, going 3-4 in 12 starts with a 2.91 ERA, his best since a career-best 2.55 ERA when he split 2014 between Cleveland's rotation and bullpen. He has an 88-73 career record with a 3.73 ERA.

Carrasco is signed at $12 million for each of the next two seasons, part of a deal that includes a $14 million team option for 2023 with a $3 million buyout. The option would become guaranteed if he pitches 170 innings in 2022 and is found to be healthy for the 2023 season.

Lester makes Nats debut 2 weeks after surgery

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 18 March 2021 15:52

Jon Lester was back on a mound Thursday, wearing a Washington Nationals uniform while facing opposing batters for the first time in spring training and striking out a couple during his two innings, less than two weeks after surgery to remove a parathyroid gland.

"Baseball, for me, is an escape. I come to the field, I've got stuff I need to do. I forget about this," Lester said, pointing the scar on the front of his throat, after Washington's 3-1 exhibition victory against the New York Mets at Port St. Lucia, Florida.

"So you dive into that routine," the 37-year-old left-hander said.

Wearing a red Nationals No. 34 uniform, Bryce Harper's old number, along with a green hat the day after St. Patrick's Day, Lester allowed one run and one hit while throwing 31 pitches, 21 for strikes.

He went to 0-2 counts on each of the first three Mets hitters, getting the first two out before walking J.D. Davis and giving up a first-pitch RBI double to James McCann. Then Lester pitched a 1-2-3 second inning, and that was that.

His operation was March 5 for hyperparathyroidism, which can affect the amount of calcium levels in the bloodstream and lead to someone tiring easily.

Lester said he had a hard time sleeping Wednesday night.

"Regardless of the surgery, there was still excitement leading up to this day. New team. ... I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't nervous," said Lester, who signed as a free agent with Washington for one year and $5 million after six seasons and one World Series title with the Chicago Cubs. "I had the butterflies, which is always good."

Another important takeaway: Lester thinks he'll "be in a good position" to be ready when the regular season begins April 1.

Manager Dave Martinez agreed, figuring Lester should be up to about 75 pitches after three more exhibition starts.

"We'll see how he gets up tomorrow," Martinez said. "But I think he's on the right track."

Lester took it as a good sign that his changeup worked well. That's usually the last pitch that gets into gear.

"It's definitely been a point of emphasis, as far as in my bullpens and just really playing catch with it," Lester said. "So it was nice to see the results, the couple swing and misses, out in front, and got maybe a couple foul balls on it."

Game notes
Stephen Strasburg will test his strained left calf in a simulated game against teammates Friday instead of facing Houston that night. The 2019 World Series MVP left his second spring start in the third inning Sunday. "Obviously, if something tightens up on him, we'll shut him down right away," Martinez said. ... Kyle Schwarber, Josh Bell and Yadiel Hernández homered against the Mets. ... Reliever Tanner Rainey, recovering from a muscle issue near his collarbone, threw 22 pitches in a simulated game; starters Joe Ross (73 pitches) and Erick Fedde (67) also pitched.

Winning start for Neda Shahsavari in Doha

Competing in Group 2 in the Central Asia region, no.3 seed Shahsavari upset the seeding list in her meeting with Kazakhstan’s Zauresh Akasheva, powering past the second seed 4-1 (11-8, 13-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-3).

Shahsavari is now well-placed in her pursuit of top spot in the group, the same can be said regarding Uzbekistan’s Rimma Gufranova over in Group 1. The no.4 seed played catch-up for the majority of her encounter with top seed Anastassiya Lavrova, but Gufranova never lost hope and her determination was rewarded with a six-game win over her Kazakh counterpart (7-11, 11-6, 12-14, 11-3, 11-7, 11-3).

The class of Thailand’s Orawan Paranang was on clear display in her second South East Asia fixture, making it back-to-back wins with her crushing performance against Philippines’ Jannah Romero (11-8, 11-6, 11-8, 11-4).

Singapore’s Clarence Chew has assumed control in Group 2 of the men’s singles South East Asia event, with his victory over Thailand’s Padasak Tanviriyavechakul (11-7, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7) propelling him to the group summit. Chew’s fellow compatriot Pang Yew En Koen has negotiated Group 1 with a 100 percent win record, besting Indonesia’s Rafanael Nikola Niman in four games (11-6, 11-7, 11-7, 11-9) to advance.

Central Asia top seed Kirill Gerassimenko of Kazakhstan also moves through to the next stage of the competition following his gruelling Group 1 affair with Iranian no.4 seed Nima Alamian (14-12, 9-11, 3-11, 11-7, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9). Over in Group 2, Alamian’s national colleague Noshad Alamiyan enjoyed his second success of the day, outclassing Uzbekistan’s Zokhid Kenjaev 4-1 (11-5, 11-2, 11-7, 5-11, 11-4) to swing the tide in his favour.

There was just the one match from South Asia with India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta making amends for his earlier defeat with a commanding display against Pakistan’s Muhammad Rameez (11-4, 11-1, 11-5, 11-4).

Jacob Stockdale has been named in the Ireland team for Saturday's final Six Nations match against England, with Leinster's James Lowe dropping out.

Wing Stockdale has not featured since the Autumn Nations Cup but has been recalled having proven his fitness for Ulster in recent weeks.

Connacht's Bundee Aki also returns to Andy Farrell's side, which shows six changes from the win over Scotland.

Conor Murray is included at half-back alongside captain Johnny Sexton.

Murray missed out on the win over Italy due to a hamstring problem and was an unused replacement in last week's defeat of Scotland.

Stockdale comes in to complete a back three that also includes Keith Earls and Hugo Keenan, while Aki's return in place of Garry Ringrose at inside centre sees Robbie Henshaw taking the No.13 jersey.

Farrell was forced into making changes from the side that edged out Scotland at Murrayfield last week with Ringrose and James Ryan both ruled out due to injury.

Tadhg Beirne will partner Iain Henderson at lock in Ryan's absence, while Josh van der Flier starts at openside with Will Connors having been ruled out with a knee injury in training on Wednesday.

CJ Stander is selected at blindside flanker for his final Ireland game at the Aviva after announcing his retirement earlier this week, while Dave Kilcoyne comes into the front row for Cian Healy.

Leinster's Jack Conan is named at number eight in what will be his 20th cap.

Back row Peter O'Mahony is named among the replacements with the Munster captain having completing his three-match suspension for his red card offence in the opening defeat by Wales.

Ireland are hoping to finish their campaign on a high with a victory over England having steadied the ship with wins against Italy and Scotland after losing the first two games to Wales and France.
