Kings' Bagley fractures hand in another setback

Published in Basketball
Monday, 15 March 2021 23:50

Kings forward Marvin Bagley III suffered a fractured left hand in the first half of Sacramento's 122-116 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night.

The third-year big man exited the game with 2:59 remaining in the first half having already registered 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting, three rebounds and a blocked shot in 16 minutes. An X-ray administered at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte revealed a fracture of the fourth metacarpal in his left hand, according to the team.

Bagley will undergo further medical treatment in the coming days, and an update on his potential recovery timeline will be provided, the team said.

It's unclear how Bagley sustained the injury.

"I still just really feel for him," Kings coach Luke Walton said. "He's put in so much hard work this year. I've said all year long, he's continued to make really big strides, and he was putting together a heck of a game tonight. We're going to miss him, miss him out there on the floor with us. We feel for him, but that's what being part of a team is about. We'll be there for him, and we need to find a way to get some other players to step and try and fill in for what he was doing for us.''

Bagley's scoring average had gone up every month this season -- from 11.8 points per game in December to 13.8 points in January to 15.2 points on 51.9% shooting in February before this injury came in his fifth game played in March.

It's another setback for the former No. 2 pick in the 2018 draft, who played in just 13 games last season due to various injuries, including a broken right thumb and lateral right foot sprain.

"The guy has been playing really well, works his butt off and it's unfortunate, but that's part of it," said guard Tyrese Haliburton. "We have to figure it out. There's no magic potion to heal him, so we have to figure this out without him. He'll still be with us every day, cheering us on and being a great teammate.''

The Kings (15-24) have lost 13 of their past 16 games.

Long-awaited return for Marlins starter Sanchez

Published in Baseball
Monday, 15 March 2021 16:28

Sixto Sanchez's first pitch for the Miami Marlins in the first spring training game of his career squarely met Jose Altuve's bat.

The Houston Astros star grounded a leadoff single Monday, but Sanchez shook off that setback on his way to 1⅔ scoreless innings in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The season debut by the highly regarded 22-year-old Dominican right-hander was delayed by a visa issue and then a false positive on a COVID-19 test.

"I don't feel frustrated, but it was a weird feeling," Sanchez said via a translator. "That false positive spoiled my momentum, but I'm not that far behind. I just can't pitch as many innings as the other guys."

Because of off days, the Marlins could skip Sanchez's first two turns of the season. But he's expected to join the rotation by mid-April and is widely projected as a future ace.

"We know what we have with Sixto," manager Don Mattingly said. "It's just a matter of getting the process started for him. ... It looked like his stuff was good. He was throwing strikes for the most part."

Sanchez, acquired in the trade two years ago that sent catcher J.T. Realmuto to the Philadelphia Phillies, made his MLB debut last August. He went 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA in seven starts and pitched five shutout innings against the Cubs in the playoffs.

Against the Astros, Sanchez threw 30 pitches and topped out at 100 mph, which didn't faze Altuve.

"He was ready, waiting for that fastball," Sanchez said. "They're going to be ready for that heat."

As an alternative, Sanchez has been trying to polish his changeup this spring. He'll get a chance to do so again Saturday, when he is tentatively scheduled to pitch three innings in his next start.

Braun: Retirement likely but decision not reached

Published in Baseball
Monday, 15 March 2021 21:22

PHOENIX -- Ryan Braun said he's strongly leaning toward retirement, but the Milwaukee Brewers' home run leader isn't ready to make any decision regarding his future.

Braun visited the Brewers' spring training site Monday and said he hasn't picked up a bat since the end of the 2020 season. The 2011 NL MVP became a free agent when the Brewers declined to exercise a $15 million mutual option in his contract last October.

"I'm strongly leaning in the direction of being done as an active player," the 37-year-old Braun said. "But I think you can always push that decision back. I'm still young enough, still working out, still in shape. If something were to change, I might as well leave that door open as long as possible."

Braun has spent his entire major league career with the Brewers and said that "I can't foresee a scenario in which I play for any other major league team."

Last season, Braun batted a career-low .233 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 39 games while dealing with a back issue. He came on strong late in the season and had a .958 OPS in September.

His back issues prevented him from playing in the Brewers' first-round playoff loss to the eventual World Series-champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

"Once the regular season starts and I'm able to watch some games, I feel like that's when I'll actually miss the game itself," Braun said. "I'm kind of interested to see how I feel, what it feels like. Obviously, I've never experienced it before. Time will tell."

Braun made his debut with Milwaukee in 2007. His 352 homers as a Brewer are the most of anyone in franchise history.

He ranks second among all Brewers in career RBIs (1,154), extra-base hits (809), total bases (3,525) and doubles (408). He ranks third in runs (1,080), hits (1,963), triples (49), stolen bases (216) and walks (586).

Britain's Katie Boulter lost in straight sets to Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round of the Monterrey Open.

The 24-year-old was beaten 6-4 6-0 in Mexico by the world number 111, who is ranked 207 places higher.

Boulter broke first to go 3-2 up in the first set, only for Schmiedlova to immediately break back and win all but one of the games thereafter.

Heather Watson faces fellow Briton Harriet Dart on Tuesday.

Dart, beaten in the qualifiers, goes into the main draw in Monterrey as a lucky loser after Danka Kovinic pulled out of the tournament injured.

Dart also got into the main draw of last week's Abierto Zapopan event as a lucky loser.

D-Day in Doha, surprise finalists

Man of the moment, the player to cause the major upset was Lubomir Jancarik, the no.30 seed. Following success against Spain’s Alvaro Robles, the no.18 seed (4-11, 4-11, 15-13, 11-8, 12-10, 12-10), he ousted Liam Pitchford, the top seed (11-6, 2-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-7, 12-10).

Kou Lei now awaits; the no.12 seed, he accounted for Paraguay’s Marcelo Aguirre, the no.17 seed (6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7, 11-7) followed by success in opposition to Italy’s Niagol Stoyanov, the no.31 seed (11-6, 11-8, 14-16, 11-3, 12-10).

Progress for Kou Lei, it was the same from Florent Lambiet, the no.32 seed, who overcame Italy’s Mihai Bobocica, the no.36 seed (5-11, 13-15, 5-11, 11-9, 11-5, 12-10, 11-6).

Florent Lambiet now confronts Hungary’s Bence Majoros, the no.15 seed, the winner in opposition to Turkey’s Abdulla Yingeler, the no.48 seed (13-11, 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8), and Romania’s Ovidiu Ionescu, the no.28 seed (11-8, 5-11, 7-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7).

Fast attacking play the order of proceedings; in the one remaining final, defensive artistry is on view. Slovakia’s Wang Yang, the no.6 seed, opposes Panagiotis Gionis of Greece, the no.10 seed.

Wang Yang accounted for Hungary’s Adam Szudi, the no.35 seed (11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7), after having ousted Spain’s Jesus Cantero, the no.47 seed (11-6, 11-6, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7).

Meanwhile, in equally hard-fought contests Panagiotis Gionis defeated Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes, the no.23 seed (6-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-5, 11-8), prior to overcoming Russia’s Kirill Skachkov, the no.13 seed (5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 18-20, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8).

The matches will be staged on Tuesday 16th March.

Defence dictates, delight and despair

The no.17 seed, Linda Bergström caused the biggest shock. After accounting for Mexico’s Yadira Silva, the no.30 seed (11-4, 11-6, 11-4, 11-8), the 26 year old overcame Ukraine’s Margaryta Pesotska, the no.2 seed (11-7, 13-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9), a player who is no stranger to the defensive art.

She is an established member of the Ukraine national women’s team alongside Ganna Gaponova and Tetyana Bilenko. There is a theory that all defenders are different, point proven!

Similarly, Polina Mikhailova upset the order of precedence. The no.5 seed, she defeated Nadezhda Bogdanova of Belarus, the no.25 seed (11-9, 11-6, 11-3, 8-11, 11-3), before resolute defence combined with sporadic attacking play brought the downfall of Thailand’s Suthasini Sawettabut, the no.3 seed (11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8).

Upsets, in the remaining contests matters advanced as status advised.

Top seed, Britt Eerland justified her billing. After eventually overcoming Chile’s Paulina Vega, the no.14 seed, in a tension-packed seven games encounter (11-8, 5-11, 8-1, 11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6), the precious place was reserved courtesy of success in opposition to Spain’s Galia Dvorak, the no.16 seed (11-5, 12-10, 12-10, 11-7).

Success for Britt Eerland; to conclude the day it was success for Monaco’s Yang Xiaoxin. The no.4 seed, following a five games win in opposition to India’s Manika Batra, the no.9 seed (11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9), a dramatic seven games score-line was the order of proceedings against Spain’s Maria Xiao, the no.13 seed (14-12, 8-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 12-10). A Tokyo place reserved; the result reflected the day; one of delight and delirium combined with despondency and despair.

One position remains, the losing finalist from each of the four events now competes on a knock-out basis for the one remaining place.

The matches will be played on Tuesday 16th March.

Hooker Ken Owens says he is glad Wayne Pivac continued to believe in his coaching mantra, with Wales now on the brink of a Grand Slam.

Pivac won three out of 10 games in his first year in charge but has led Wales to four wins in the 2021 Six Nations.

Victory against France in Paris on Saturday would complete the transformation for Pivac and his side.

"He's stuck to his guns, believed in his philosophy, and tweaked things along the way," said Owens.

Few predicted the turnaround in fortunes as Wales finished fifth in the Six Nations and Autumn Nations Cup in 2020 as Pivac initially struggled to follow in the footsteps of fellow New Zealander Warren Gatland.

Owens was Pivac's captain at Scarlets where he saw something similar develop with a slow start before the region won the Pro12 title in 2017.

"It's been a tough transition for him stepping into the job after the great work Gats did over the last 10 years," said Owens.

"It was never going to be an easy job and there have been some early teething problems.

"We look at things after every campaign and I'm glad he's backed the squad, players and management.

"The players and staff have done the same with him and we've got an 'all in it together' mentality. We've got some results on the board and hopefully we're on the verge of a bit of history.

"Foundations were put in during the last Six Nations and Wayne and coaches blooded young players in the autumn campaign which we've benefitted from and will continue to do so.

"It comes down to everyone trusting and backing each other and working hard. We have had little bit of luck along the way, but you have to capitalise on that."

Wales' attacking game has also improved with 17 tries in four games so far, including an Owens' double in the 48-7 win over Italy.

"Things are clicking," said Owens.

"We're taking our opportunities and trying to spread the ball and have had some individual brilliance throughout the competition."

Owens, 34, says a Grand Slam in a troubled year would lift the nation.

"I've been lucky enough to play in a couple of these games before this," said Owens.

"It's been a tough year since Wayne has taken over but it would be reward for the hard work of the management, staff and players.

"For the public it would be a huge uplift after a tough year for the country. It would be special if it happens but we've got to go and get the job done before we think about lifting the trophy.

"It would be amazing for the country. After the England game I was driving through the village. The sun was out and there was a spring in people's steps.

"It makes you realise as players the effect we can have on people. In the last month, we've managed to get good results which has given people something to smile and cheer about.

"Hopefully we can continue that over the next week."

Standing in the way will be France who are the only other side who have a chance of winning the tournament, despite losing 23-20 to England last weekend.

"With the way France have been playing in the last couple of years they are making massive strides forward," said Owens.

"They'll have been disappointed to lose to England but be going back to Paris looking to get a result to keep their championship hopes alive."

This Wales squad have to create their own history by clinching an away Grand Slam with all the recent successes achieved in Cardiff. The last tournament clean sweep completed on the road by Wales was in 1971.

"It's going to be different with no supporters and almost takes that home advantage away to a certain degree," said Owens.

"We've been to Paris and got big wins before. It's a different challenge to the ones most of us have experienced before when we've been at Cardiff and had electric energy from the crowd.

"Every Grand Slam decider or game to win a championship is full on and I'm expecting the same from France who still have their own title ambitions."

NASCAR Modified Team Owner Sully Tinio, 72

BELLINGHAM, Mass. – Longtime NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour team owner Salvatore “Sully” Tinio has passed away.

Tinio was 72 years old and spent much of his life at the race track.

From 2011 to 2018, Tinio was the owner of the No. 44 Tinio Racing team on the Whelen Modified Tour. Despite only fielding a full-time team twice, Tinio Racing always fielded a competitive team whenever showing up to the track.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Sully Tinio during this difficult time,” Tour Director Jimmy Wilson said Sunday. “Sully’s competitive spirit and determination embodied the best attributes of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. He built a rich legacy as a winning car owner and dear friend to many, and his presence will be missed.”

In eight seasons on the Whelen Modified Tour, Tinio Racing scored 11 poles and 11 race victories, including a streak of three in a row at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with 2010 Tour champion Bobby Santos behind the wheel.

The last win for the team came in July of 2018 at Loudon, when Santos nipped Chase Dowling by .007 seconds.

According to RaceDayCT, Tinio Motorsports was planning a return to competition for the 2021 season in select Modified races with Santos behind the wheel, set to begin in April.
