While technically not a major championship, The Players Championship provided some major theatre on Sunday, as Justin Thomas chased down Lee Westwood and Bryson DeChambeau and then held on to win at TPC Sawgrass. Here’s everything you need to know:

Leaderboard: Justin Thomas (-14), Lee Westwood (-13), Brian Harman (-12), Bryson DeChambeau (-12), Talor Gooch (-11), Paul Casey (-11)

How it happened: At the beginning of the day, it looked like Westwood, the leader by two, and DeChambeau, looking for back-to-back trophies, would again battle it out for the second straight week – and even more so as Westwood birdied the first hole. But neither had their best stuff on Sunday. In fact, the fourth hole was downright dreadful – DeChambeau topped and shanked shots, Westwood sliced one and they combined to go 3 over on the short par 4.

Bryson DeChambeau and Lee Westwood played the fourth hole in nightmarish fashion Sunday at TPC Sawgrass.

While both players still had a chance to win entering the last few holes, they also allowed Thomas to take control. Thomas couldn't buy a putt early on and didn’t make a birdie until the ninth hole, but that’s when he caught fire, birdieing No. 10, eagling No. 11 to take a one-shot lead and adding to his advantage with a birdie at No. 12. Westwood tied Thomas with an 8-foot birdie make at No. 14, but he hit two poor shots on the par-5 16th hole and then three-putted No. 17 to end his bid. DeChambeau played Nos. 12-16 in 3 under with an eagle at No. 16, but his early struggles dug him too deep of a hole. Thomas’ closing 68 capped a 14-under weekend performance at the Stadium Course, where Thomas was outside the cut line through 27 holes.

What it means: It hadn’t been an easy start to the year for Thomas. Some of it was self-inflicted, as Thomas uttered a homophobic slur at the year opener in Hawaii and was subsequently dropped by his clothing sponsor. But he also lost his grandfather, PGA professional Paul Thomas, in February, and Thomas’ play on the course had suffered with two missed cuts and no top-10s in four starts since Kapalua. “I've had definitely my fair share of lows this season,” he said after shooting 64 on Saturday, a low round that set up Sunday’s heroics. Now, Thomas is back in the winner’s circle for the first time since the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis last summer, and he’s won a Tour event for the seventh straight year.

Rounds of the day: Several players made nice runs up the board on the final day, including Corey Conners, Charles Howell III and Sungjae Im, who all shot closing 66s to increase the size of their checks. Conners moved up to solo seventh while Howell also posted a backdoor top-10 finish.

Shot of the day: Thomas’ eagle at No. 11 came from just inside of 20 feet, but we thought the celebration was even better.

Not to be overlooked, though, was his heart-stopping drive on the par-4 18th.

Biggest disappointment: The final pairing. Westwood and DeChambeau combined to shoot 1 under, and neither had a chance to win on the 18th green. That's incredibly disappointing. Westwood was constantly trying to salvage par and ultimately failed on the 17th. DeChambeau never seemed to get on track after the debacle at No. 4.

Quote of the day: "I fought so hard today, stayed patient. Probably one of the best rounds of my life, tee to green." - Thomas

Justin Thomas won The Players Championship for the first time on Sunday, rallying with a closing 68. Here's a look at what Thomas and the rest of the players who made the cut earned in prize money and FedExCup points:

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – It was, in retrospect, a surreal 15 minutes that likely cost Bryson DeChambeau his second consecutive PGA Tour victory Sunday at The Players Championship.

Two strokes behind front-runner Lee Westwood, DeChambeau took a mighty swing with his hybrid on No. 4 but his golf ball flew only about 100 yards before dropping into a pond.

“I was trying to hit more of a low bullet and just kind of caught the heel, a little high on the thing. It wasn't really a top, it was more like a thin ball that just had no spin on it and just knuckled,” DeChambeau said. “I've never done that [in competition].”

Bryson DeChambeau and Lee Westwood played the fourth hole in nightmarish fashion Sunday at TPC Sawgrass.

The mistake was compounded when his next shot sailed about 100 yards right of the green into what ShotLink called a “landscaping area.” That, DeChambeau said, was the result of a crack in his 4-iron.

“I looked at the bottom of the thing. I couldn't use it all day,” he said. “It sounded really weird and just came off horrifically, and I'm like, oh, and there's a line in the bottom of the club.”

DeChambeau made a double-bogey 6 on the hole and drifted out of contention until he converted an eagle putt on the 16th hole that moved him back to within two shots of the lead held by Justin Thomas. Although he failed to convert lengthy birdie putts at Nos. 17 and 18 to close the gap he said his ability to contend at TPC Sawgrass was encouraging.

“I can play on golf courses that don't really suit me. That's a big lesson,” he said. “No matter what happens, no matter if I pop a shot, no matter if I thin, whatever it was, I'm still never out of it, for the most part.”

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – It’s been a busy few weeks for Lee Westwood and there doesn’t seem to be any letup in sight.

Westwood began the final round at The Players Championship with a two-stroke lead but struggled on the front nine and finished a shot behind eventual champion Justin Thomas. The Englishman also finished runner-up last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and he’s scheduled to play next week’s Honda Classic. But before that, he has a special trip planned with his son.

“I've got a fun couple of days coming up. I'm going to play Augusta with my son, Sam. Tomorrow's going to be a good Monday,” Westwood said.

Westwood, a two-time runner-up at the year’s first major who will be making his 20th start at Augusta National, said he plans to have his son caddie for him at next month’s Masters.

“It's the first time he's played there. He's been there with me years ago, but he's caddying for me this year in the Masters itself, so I figure I'm taking him to play 36 holes Monday and Tuesday,” Westwood said. “Be a good lads-and-dads trip. Looking forward to it.”

Man Utd could have Pogba back vs. Milan - Ole

Published in Soccer

Manchester United's injury problems are clearing, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and midfielder Paul Pogba could return against Milan in the Europa League on Thursday.

United were without Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and David De Gea for the 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday but Solskjaer says they could all be on the plane to Italy this week.

"Injury-wise I hope we have four or five players back for that game," said Solskjaer.

"It's very likely that Edinson and Anthony are fit, Donny hopefully as well. Paul even might make the trip and David is back from isolation. That's more numbers. Today we had two goalkeepers on the bench so we need them back."

Pogba has not played since Feb. 6 after suffering a thigh injury during the 3-3 draw with Everton.

De Gea, meanwhile, has missed the four games after returning to Spain to attend the birth of his first child. The 30-year-old is back in Manchester but missed the win over West Ham after being forced to self-isolate in line with UK government coronavirus protocols.

Mourinho blasts players for 'hiding' in derby loss

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:34

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho accused his players of "hiding" and questioned whether referees were "tired" as Spurs lost 2-1 to Arsenal in Sunday's north London derby.

Spurs were second-best for long periods at Emirates Stadium despite taking the lead through a stunning Erik Lamela 33rd-minute rabona.

Martin Odegaard equalised for the home side on the stroke of half-time before Davinson Sanchez was adjudged to have fouled Alexandre Lacazette in the box, giving the France international the chance to slot home the winning goal.

Lamela was then sent off for a second yellow card with 14 minutes remaining.

Mourinho hauled Gareth Bale and Tanguy Ndombele off at either side of the hour mark having already lost Heung-Min Son to a first-half hamstring injury, and in summing up the game he told Sky Sports: "No post-match interviews for referees? That is a pity.

"We played really bad in the first half. The 1-1 was not a fair reflection of the first half. We were poor. Defending bad. No intensity or pressing. Some important players hiding. Really bad. In the second half we only had space to improve, which we did, and then it is a question -- but an impossible one as they don't speak -- for the referee Michael Oliver to answer.

Arsenal's win vs. Spurs a 'thoroughly one-sided' affair

Steve Nicol says Arsenal's nervy finish vs. Tottenham will be forgotten because of the Gunners' dominant display.

"Probably Paul Tierney too as he was the VAR. According to [fourth official] Kevin Friend, the referee told him he had a clear vision and the VAR does not want to go against."

Lacazette appeared to slice his left-footed shot off target before Sanchez made contact, but Oliver awarded Arsenal a penalty and the decision was checked by VAR.

"In the second half with 1-1, we felt we were controlling the game and we felt we could give a different step to try to win it," said Mourinho. "Then the crucial action of the game arrives. I don't want to call it a penalty because it is an offence to penalties.

"It was a mistake by Michael Oliver. Players get tired of so many matches. Coaches get tired. Maybe referees, they get tired. He had a game midweek? Maybe Champions League or Europa League? Maybe he is tired. Normally I am very unlucky with him because my record with him on penalties is astonishing. With Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, it doesn't matter the club. I am very, very unlucky with such a good referee."

Pele salutes Ronaldo for breaking his goals record

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:34

Brazil great Pele has congratulated Cristiano Ronaldo for breaking his record for goals in "official matches" after the Portugal star scored a hat trick in Juventus' 3-1 victory over Cagliari on Sunday.

"Life is a solo flight. Each makes his own journey. And what a beautiful journey you are having! I admire you a lot, I love watching you play and this is no secret to anyone. Congratulations on breaking my record of goals in official matches," Pele, who posted a picture of himself and Ronaldo embracing, said on Instagram.

- Why Pele's claim of 1,000+ goals should be taken seriously
- Toe Poke: Ronaldo, Pele or Bican? We may never no for sure

"My only regret is not being able to give you a hug today. But I leave this photo in your honor, with great affection, as the symbol of a friendship that has existed for many years."

Since football's world governing body FIFA does not keep an official record of who is on top of the all-time scoring list, it is a benchmark that is hotly contested.

Several media outlets previously hailed Ronaldo for breaking the record when he reached 760 goals as he had supposedly surpassed the record set by Austro-Czech striker Josef Bican.

However, the Czech FA subsequently said in January that Bican's total was actually 821 goals, following a review of his statistics during a career spanning from 1931 to 1955.

According to the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF), an online database of historical soccer statistics that is used as a general guide by several mainstream sports media outlets, including ESPN, Pele has scored 775 goals across additional appearances for a "military team" and for a "Sao Paolo Selection" between 1959 and 1962 -- eight more than Pele himself claims.

Ronaldo celebrated the milestone after the game and explained his reasons for waiting to acknowledge it.

"The last few weeks were filled with news and stats considering me the World's Top Scorer in football history, overcoming Pele's 757 official goals. Although I'm thankful for that recognition, now it's time for me to explain why I didn't acknowledge that record until this moment," Ronaldo said in an Instagram post of his own.

"My everlasting and unconditional admiration for mister Edson Arantes do Nascimento [Pele], such as the respect that I have for mid-20th century football, led me to take into account his 767 score, assuming his 9 goals for Sao Paulo State Team, as well as his single goal for the Brazilian Military Team, as official goals. The World has changed since then and football has changed as well, but this doesn't mean that we can just erase history according to our interests.

Ronaldo back to Real Madrid? No, but what about Man United?

Gab Marcotti dismisses Cristiano Ronaldo rejoining Real Madrid, but says he could help Manchester United.

"Today, as I reach the 770.º official goal in my professional career, my first words go straight to @pele . There's no player in the World who hasn't been raised listening to stories about his games, his goals and his achievements, and I'm no exception. And for that reason, I'm filled with joy and pride as I acknowledge the goal that put's me on top of the World's goalscoring list, overcoming Pelé's record, something that I could never have dreamed of while growing up as a child from Madeira.

"Thanks to all of those who took part of this amazing journey with me. To my teammates, to my opponents, to the fans of the beautiful game all over the World and, above all, to my family and close friends: trust me when I say that I couldn't have done it without you.

"Now I can't wait for the next games and challenges! The next records and trophees! Believe me, this story is still far from being over. The future is tomorrow and there's still a lot to win for Juventus and Portugal!

"Join me in this journey! Let's go!"

Pele, who helped Brazil to win the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970, states on his own Instagram page that he heads the all-time scoring list with 1,283 goals over amateur, unofficial and friendly matches against top sides of his day.

Di Maria, Marquinhos homes robbed mid-game

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:29

Angel Di Maria left Paris Saint-Germain's game against Nantes early on Sunday to rush to his home where his family had been held hostage during a robbery, sources have told ESPN.

Another PSG player, Marquinhos, also had his parents' house targeted by intruders during the match. Like Di Maria's family, Marquinhos' parents were also home at the time and held hostage by the robbers.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)

The Argentina international was substituted off by Mauricio Pochettino just after the hour mark after a strange scene where Leonardo, Paris' sporting director, filtered the bad news to the PSG manager, who then informed his player while walking him back to the dressing room.

A visibly upset Di Maria left the Parc des Princes to rush home to be with his family.

The police have opened an investigation and the club will offer their full support to the two players and their families.

Di Maria went through a similar experience when playing for Manchester United in 2015, when he and his family were the victims of an attempted raid by burglars.

MANCHESTER, England -- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be talking a lot about "progress" between now and the end of the season: how much Manchester United have made, whether it's enough and how they take the next step forward. It will be an easier conversation if this week goes well, and United started a crucial seven days with a narrow 1-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Hopes of finishing the season as Manchester City's nearest challengers strengthened, Solskjaer's team now move on to competitions they can still actually win -- first to AC Milan in the Europa League and then to Leicester City in the FA Cup. Finish second in the Premier League and win a trophy and Solskjaer will save himself a summer of debate about whether United are on the right track. Bow out of both the Europa League and the FA Cup before the international break and the same old questions about the direction of the club will resurface.

The first leg of what is a crucial run of three games has been safely negotiated, and with nine league games to go, United are nine points clear of West Ham in fifth. The risk of being dragged into a battle for the top four is subsiding and the focus now can be on bettering last season's third-place finish and winning a trophy.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
- ESPN+ viewer's guide: Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, FA Cup and more

"This week was always going to be massive," said Solskjaer afterwards. "We want to improve on last season and get to a final and move up the table. This week was always going to be about how we recovered after a massive disappointment after a late equaliser [against Milan on Thursday]. You never know how that can affect you but the attitude was spot on.

"We're starting to build some momentum in the league and open the gap further to West Ham. It's a big week for us."

Victory over West Ham was not particularly pretty but it has given United some momentum at the start of a pivotal week. Solskjaer has ambitions greater than the Europa League and the FA Cup, but after four straight semifinal defeats, pressure is growing on the Norwegian manager to win something.

Progress in Europe is not guaranteed after a 1-1 draw with Milan at Old Trafford and they will need to score at least once in the San Siro on Thursday if they want to reach the quarterfinals of the Europa League. At Leicester on Sunday there is a place in the semifinals of the FA Cup up for grabs, and United's prospects for the final stretch of this season will look a lot brighter if they are still in the hunt for trophies when the players return from international duty in the first week of April. In the Premier League, United have more points and have scored more goals than at the same stage last year, but this season needs silverware to add some shine.

In his programme notes ahead of West Ham's visit, Solskjaer wrote about being "harder and harder to beat." The numbers back him up with United losing just one of their past 23 league games and recording four consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time since Solskjaer took over. Harry Maguire was particularly good against West Ham.

The trick now is to go from not losing to winning more often, because they are not the same thing. Only Manchester City have lost fewer league games than United this season, but the Red Devils have drawn nine times and they will need those extra 18 points if they want to bridge the gap with Pep Guardiola's champions-elect.

Becoming more clinical in front of goal would be a good start.

West Ham didn't manage a shot on target but were only beaten here because of Craig Dawson's own goal in the second half -- the 15th goal they have conceded from set pieces this season. Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes will all feel they could have been on the scoresheet. Solskjaer will hope they're saving the killer instinct for the cups.

"We've had four clean sheets now in the league straight up and that's always a foundation," he said. "We want to score goals. I feel we're getting back to where we can, it was only a week ago we beat City 2-0. We don't wanna be greedy, no one can score four or five goals in every game in the Premier League, you've got to earn it. The foundation with the clean sheet, attitude, desire, that's there, and we always back our players to create enough to score goals."

Ahead of a pivotal week, Solskjaer says United are going in the right direction. Follow up victory over West Ham with wins over Milan and Leicester to stay on course to lift a first trophy of his reign and supporters won't just have to take his word for it.

Kraigg Brathwaite, West Indies' newly appointed full-time Test captain, has said it's a "privilege" to take over from Jason Holder.

Holder, who became captain in 2015, led West Indies in 37 Tests before opting out of the recent tour of Bangladesh amid concerns over Covid-19. Brathwaite led a depleted West Indies side to an unexpected 2-0 Test series win, following which CWI gave him the captaincy full-time, with lead selector Roger Harper contending that he "was able to motivate his players to play to a very high level and create the culture we are looking to establish where the team showed a collective determination to fight and a real hunger for success."

Ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on March 21 in Antigua, Brathwaite hailed his predecessor, who remains a key member of the West Indies side as one of the world's premier allrounders.

"I just want to thank god for giving me this opportunity, and also want to say I thought Jason Holder did a superb job leading the Test team for the last five years, so obviously taking over from him is a privilege," Brathwaite said. "I was very happy [to be made captain], obviously very proud, and I look forward to the challenge."

Speaking about the Bangladesh tour, Brathwaite said he had tried to help the young players in the West Indies team back their own ability.

"Well, I really enjoyed that tour," he said. "For me, I just made sure I let the guys know, to believe in themselves and believe in their ability. I've played youth cricket with most of those guys, and if not, first-class cricket for a number of years, so I know the ability they have. Just assured them that they can do it.

"Just trust in your plans and believe in them, and prepare well. The word attitude is always key, and I thought we did that well, and it's important for us as a team to continue that same attitude."

On his own batting, Brathwaite said he had been working on his balance against fast bowling in the lead-up to the Sri Lanka series.

"The more you're balanced, the better your shots, and that was something important for me," he said. "I also went about planning even better, in terms of how I want to go about my innings, and topping up on power. But mainly getting my balance in order, and backing yourself. You always have plans, and it's to really trust them, that was the key for me. Planning was very very important."
