PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Bad days on the golf course no longer spiral into bad choices for Chris Kirk and good days, like Friday’s 65 at TPC Sawgrass, are so much sweeter.

Kirk has been sober for just under two years and he concedes that that not every day is easy, but his life and his choices are no longer dictated by how he performs at work.

“I certainly have my highs and lows still, like anybody, but my perspective is so different now that a bad day or a bad week is just not really going to bother me,” he said. “If I go shoot 75, no, I wouldn't call that fun, I wouldn't say that's fun, but when I walk off the golf course, that's it. It doesn't matter anymore.”

It’s that epiphany that makes the good days like Friday worth savoring. Following a mundane 72 on Thursday, Kirk birdied four of his first eight holes on Friday and vaulted into contention with a hole out for eagle from 147 yards at the par-4 first hole (he started his round at No. 10).

Kirk’s 7-under card was the best round by two shots from the early wave and moved him into a tie for the early lead with Matthew Fitzpatrick. Although his ball-striking has been solid this week he credited Michael Cromie, his occasional caddie, for his improved play on the greens on Friday.

“I'll be the first to admit that I'm a fantastic green reader on bent and on Bermuda greens, and I am a not-as-good green reader on poa annua and overseeded Bermuda [like at TPC Sawgrass],” Kirk said. “Towards the end of the round [Cromie], who's one of my best friends and a very good player in his own right, plays professional golf also, used him a little bit more, and I would say I will most likely continue to use him a little bit more and more over the weekend.”

Source: Orlando rejects Dike bid by English club

Orlando City SC has turned down an offer from an unnamed English team to acquire forward Daryl Dike, a source has confirmed to ESPN, and added that the MLS side is still fielding queries over the striker's services.

The BBC reported that one team from the Premier League's "Big Six" of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, had made a bid of $10 million for Dike -- currently on loan at English Championship side Barnsley -- that was turned down.

The source added that Orlando continues to receive offers and requests for information for the forward, who made his U.S. debut on Jan. 31 in the 7-0 win against Trinidad & Tobago.

Dike has been a hit since joining Barnsley, scoring three goals in his last five games, with Barnsley going 7-0-1 since he arrived. The source indicated that Orlando is holding out for a bigger offer, noting that Barnsley has an option to purchase 80 percent of Dike's rights for $20m.

Orlando manager Oscar Pareja said earlier this month that he expects Dike to suit up for the Lions when his loan ends.

"Daryl's spot is here in Orlando," Pareja told the Orlando Sentinel earlier this month. "I think he has done great in his career so far and we're waiting on Daryl to compete with us this year."

Dike scored eight goals and added four assists in 19 league and playoff appearances last season for Orlando, in what was an abbreviated campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic.

West Indies have named their first Test squad since their captaincy swap, with outgoing leader Jason Holder and Darren Bravo both featuring in the Kraigg Brathwaite-led side.

Though they return, the squad announced by Cricket West Indies for the first Test against Sri Lanka also retains several "second-string" players who starred in West Indies' series win in Bangladesh, including the hero of the first Test Kyle Mayers. Ten players had pulled out of that tour due to concerns over travelling during the pandemic.

Jermaine Blackwood is the vice-captain. The first Test will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium from March 21 to 25.

Speaking on the squad, chief selector Roger Harper said: "It is good to be able to put together a Test squad with a number of players coming off very good performances in their last series in Bangladesh. It is a fantastic opportunity to build on the good work that was done in Bangladesh. It is very important to continue the process of working hard, playing with great passion, playing with determination and a great desire to succeed. Doing that consistently will bring us the right results."

"A number of players seized the opportunity that the tour of Bangladesh presented and booked a place for themselves in the Test team for this series. This now means that there is keen competition for places which should drive better individual performances and that of the team. I also think that these players are looking forward to displaying their skills on home soil."

Sri Lanka play two Tests in Antigua, with the second Test starting from March 29.

India's batsmen "weren't aware enough of what we had to do on that kind of pitch," Virat Kohli has said after the hosts managed a below-par 124 for 7 in their eight-wicket drubbing against England in the opening T20I in Ahmedabad. India's batsmen came a cropper against England's fast bowlers who regularly breached the 140kmh mark - and Mark Wood even crossed 150kmh a few times - as India's top three scored only five runs together, and Shreyas Iyer was the only one to cross 25 with his 67 off 48.

Kohli said they would have to come up with "clarity of plans" for the next game, which will be held at the same ground on Sunday.

"We just weren't aware enough of what we had to do on that kind of pitch, I think lack of execution of the shots that we tried to play out there in the middle is something we have to address as batsmen that it wasn't an ideal day on the park," he told Star Sports at the post-match presentation. "You have to accept your faults, come back in the next game with a bit more intent, clarity of plans, what are the areas you want to hit.

"It was a strange kind of a start for us. The wicket didn't allow you to hit the kind of shots you wanted to. Shreyas' innings was an example of how you could use the depth of the crease, ride the bounce because there was variable bounce at times, and hit the areas square of the wicket which others failed to do. It was just a below-par batting performance from us today and England made us pay for it."

Like he had said on the eve of the match, Kohli said the batsmen tried a new approach in this game by batting more freely as India use this five-match series to prepare for the T20 World Cup later in the year, but also said they "probably didn't spend enough time in the middle to assess the conditions". Shikhar Dhawan was bowled while hitting across the line against Wood's express pace for 4 off 12, KL Rahul chopped on, while facing Jofra Archer, for 1, and Kohli slapped Adil Rashid straight to mid-off for a second duck in a row in international cricket.

"We looked to try a few things, but having said that as a batting side you have to accept the conditions," Kohli said. "If the pitch allows you to play those kind of shots, you can be aggressive from ball one. But we got ahead of ourselves a little bit, probably didn't spend enough time out there in the middle to assess the conditions. Shreyas did that but there were too many wickets down at that stage to get past 150-160 and had we got, say, eight wickets in hand at the end of 10 overs then we could have got a few more runs and made a game out of it."

Kohli said falling without scoring was a part of the "ups and downs" in international cricket and even switching formats from Tests to T20Is could not be used as a reason for the loss on Friday.

"It's not tough (changing formats), we've done that in the past," he said. "I don't think that that should be a factor within the group. We take a lot of pride playing good white-ball cricket, we have done that in the past, we have won the T20 series we played, and the one before that, and the one before that as well. These five games are the only ones we have before the T20 World Cup, so we need to try a few things as well, but having said that we can't take anything lightly especially against a team like England which is so strong."

Eoin Morgan praised his bowlers for setting up England's comprehensive victory in their T20I series opener by restricting India to a total that proved impossible to defend.

The pace trio of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Chris Jordan made life difficult for India's batsmen, who managed just 124 for 7 from their 20 overs - having been 22 for 3 after the Powerplay - despite a fighting 67 off 48 balls from Shreyas Iyer. Archer claimed 3 for 23 from his four overs, his best T20I figures.

Before the series, Chris Silverwood, England's coach, had played down concerns about the quality of training facilities in Ahmedabad, saying they were "the same for both sides". But speaking after England's eight-wicket victory with 27 balls to spare, Morgan raised questions over the standard of the nets.

"The wicket was as expected. [It] was better than the net facilities that we've had here, so that was a huge positive for us," Morgan said in the post-match presentation. "But the plans were very basic: hit a good length, straight, we didn't have to go to plan B and C very often, which is always a good sign when the bowling unit does that.

"One of Jof's strengths is that he can bowl really fast, amongst others, but Mark Wood's super strength is that he can bowl fast. It's hard to do the whole time but when he bowls like he did tonight it's very good entertainment but also it's great to have him in your side.

"Our bowling unit, similar to our batting unit, there's a lot of competition for places. There's guys on the sideline today that could easily have got a call in that XI - Reece Topley, Tom Curran - today, so we're trying to cover all departments, particularly when we're put under pressure or under the pump.

"Today the guys were so good that they almost didn't allow that to happen. Throughout the series there will be continuous challenges and we will be up against it a lot of the time, so it's important for those moments to produce your best."

Jason Roy and Jos Buttler set off England's pursuit well with a 72-run partnership. Roy top-scored for the visitors, one shy of his half-century, having come into the match without reaching 25 in his previous 10 international innings going back to February 2020 and amid talk of Alex Hales possibly returning to the England fold, at least in a training capacity to begin with, after a strong BBL season.

"There's a huge amount of competition for places within the squad and even outside the squad," Morgan said. "So it's always nice, you know, there's huge support in the changing room for anybody that scores runs and does well and when Jason scores runs and does well in the fashion that he plays, it really does gee the boys up."

While it was pace and bounce that went a long way towards delivering England victory on Friday, Roy said he had been working hard on facing spin in the nets.

"[It was] better than a slap in the face. I'll take 49 at the start of the day and I'll take a comfortable victory like that as well," Roy said. "For us to come out and bowl like we did and field like we did in our first game was incredible to see and will hold us in good stead for the rest of the series.

"I've done a lot of practice, especially against Adil Rashid in the nets. He's helped me a lot to learn about my game, learn my strengths."

Morgan also said there was no hangover among his side's multi-format players following England's tough 3-1 Test series defeat, which ended at the same venue less than a week ago.

"It's a completely different format of the game and there's a complete distinction between the formats as well," Morgan said. "We've been on tours before where possibly the white-ball guys have played for us and we've not played well and it's not lingered into the Test matches.

"Likewise, the other way around, and particularly in big series, like the Ashes, for instance, we've come out of the back of it and learned from it and equally when we've won at home in the Tests we've used that as confidence coming into the white-ball series."

AD: Sooners still up for Huskers despite reports

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 12 March 2021 11:30

Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione on Friday reiterated that the Sooners intend to face Nebraska in the 2021 football season, despite reports that Nebraska is trying to get out of the Sept. 18 game in Norman.

Castiglione, responding to media inquiries, tweeted that the Nebraska-Oklahoma game is set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the "Game of the Century," when top-ranked Nebraska beat No. 2 Oklahoma 35-31 in Norman. Stadium reported Friday that Nebraska is trying to get out of the matchup and is contacting potential opponents about playing a game in Lincoln that day. Sources told the Lincoln Journal Star that Nebraska is looking into "the feasibility of the move."

"We've been looking forward to celebrating these two storied programs and have collaborated on various aspects of what promises to be a special weekend," Castiglione wrote in his tweet. "We fully intend and expect to play the game as it is scheduled."

Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos did not immediately return a text message from ESPN.

In 2012, Nebraska and Oklahoma agreed to play a home-and-home series in 2021 and 2022, renewing their rivalry from the Big Eight/Big 12. The teams in 2016 added another home-and-home series for 2029 (Norman) and 2030 (Lincoln).

Oklahoma and Nebraska last played in the 2010 Big 12 championship game. The Cornhuskers joined the Big Ten the following year.

Oklahoma leads the all-time series 45-38-3; the teams met annually from 1928 to 1997. After beating Oklahoma in 1971, Nebraska went on to win its second consecutive national championship.

Sources: Chiefs to restructure Mahomes' contract

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 12 March 2021 11:30

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to restructure quarterback Patrick Mahomes' contract to provide some cap relief, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The team is expected to convert Mahomes' $21.7 million roster bonus to a signing bonus in the coming days, which would save the Chiefs $17 million against the salary cap, sources said.

In July, the two sides reached agreement on a 10-year contract extension that ties Mahomes to Kansas City through the 2031 season.

League sources told Schefter then that the deal is worth $450 million over the 10-year period and could be worth up to $503 million. The extension includes a $140 million injury guarantee, as well as a no-trade clause.

The Chiefs picked up Mahomes' fifth-year option for the 2021 season in April, putting him under contract for the next two seasons. Mahomes had two years and $27.6 million left on his deal -- $2.8 million in 2020 and $24.8 million in 2021. The 10-year extension puts him under contract with the Chiefs for the next 12 seasons.

Mahomes, 25, has won a league MVP and a Super Bowl MVP, and he has led the Chiefs to the championship game in each of the past two seasons with a win over the San Francisco 49ers and a loss this past season to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kansas City is hopeful Mahomes will have recovered from February toe surgery to participate in the team's June minicamp. The expectation is that he will be ready to go by the start of training camp later in the summer.

ESPN's Adam Teicher contributed to this report.

Kansas has withdrawn from the Big 12 men's basketball tournament following a positive COVID-19 test, the school announced Friday.

The Jayhawks were scheduled to face Texas in the Big 12 semifinals Friday; the Longhorns will advance to the championship game to play the winner of Baylor-Oklahoma State.

Kansas big men David McCormack and Tristan Enaruna missed the Big 12 tournament because of COVID-19 protocols, although coach Bill Self didn't specify whether either player tested positive for the virus or was out due to contact tracing. Neither player traveled with the team to Kansas City, Missouri.

Kansas will remain in Kansas City and continue to be tested daily in accordance with NCAA tournament protocols.

"Obviously we are disappointed and our players are disappointed that they can't continue to compete for the Big 12 championship," Self said. "While we have been fortunate to avoid this throughout the season, there are daily risks with this virus that everybody participating is trying to avoid. We have followed the daily testing and additional protocols that have been set up for us, unfortunately we caught a bad break at the wrong time. I look forward to preparing my team in probably a unique way for next week's NCAA Tournament."

Kansas is the fourth team in the last two days to withdraw from a conference tournament because of COVID-19 issues, following Duke and Virginia in the ACC and No. 1 seed North Carolina A&T in the MEAC.

Virginia and Kansas could still play in the NCAA tournament, despite needing to show seven consecutive days of negative tests. Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of men's basketball, has said that a team just needs five healthy players to play in an NCAA tournament game. If neither the Cavaliers nor Jayhawks have a widespread COVID-19 outbreak and the rest of the team continues to test negative, both teams could be eligible to play in the NCAA tournament.

Saturday is the deadline for any team believing that it cannot meet the medical protocols to inform the Division I Men's Basketball Committee.

Virginia coach Tony Bennett said earlier Friday that the Cavaliers are "exhausting all options to participate in the NCAA Tournament."

Cahill finalizes $1.5 million deal to join Pirates

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Right-hander Trevor Cahill and the Pittsburgh Pirates finalized a $1.5 million, one-year contract on Friday, a deal that allows him to earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses for innings.

Cahill could earn $100,000 for 75 innings, $150,000 for 100, $200,000 for 125, $250,000 for 150 and $300,000 for 175.

The 33-year-old was 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA in six starts and five relief appearances for San Francisco last season. He struck out 31 and walked 14 in 24 innings, holding opponents to a career-low .184 batting average. After moving to the bullpen, he pitched five shutout innings in five games.

He earned $519,624 in prorated pay from a $2 million salary.

Cahill is 85-94 with a 4.20 ERA and one save with Oakland (2009-11, '18), Arizona (2012, '14), Atlanta (2015), the Chicago Cubs (2015-16), San Diego (2017), Kansas City (2017), the Los Angeles Angels (2019) and San Francisco (2020).

Pittsburgh placed right-hander Blake Cederlind on the 60-day injured list to open a roster spot. Cederlind injured his ulnar collateral ligament during Wednesday night's exhibition against the Yankees in Tampa and is discussing treatment, according to the Pirates. During that game, Cederlind hit Robinson Chirinos with a pitch, breaking Chirinos' right wrist.

Hungary Excited by WTT Opportunities

Published in Table Tennis
Friday, 12 March 2021 09:26

Hungary, who hosted the fantastic Liebherr 2019 World Table Tennis Championships in Budapest, has continued to show interest to host a Grand Smash event in the future once the Pandemic ends. They are also keen to help host an event before the Tokyo Olympic Games if deemed feasible.

Roland Natran stated:“In these uncertain times we need a two-fold approach: in the short-term it is essential to have a WTT event in Europe before the Olympic Games, where players are able to prepare in a competitive environment and collect World Ranking points. On the other hand, considering the strength of European Table Tennis, a Grand Smash event in Hungary could help Europe to enter the new era of table tennis.”

ITTF CEO/WTT Director Steve Dainton stated “we continually look to find solutions to host events all around the World during this difficult period. However when a country shows so much interest to travel to our first ever event here in Doha, go through the quarantine here just for one day of meetings to discuss events then we know they are very serious. It is refreshing to have this kind of positivity during this special time.”
