Derbyshire have signed Australia fast bowler Billy Stanlake as one of their overseas players for the 2021 summer. The 6ft 7in quick, who is capable of bowling at 150kph/93mph, will be available across all formats, subject to clearance.

Stanlake, 26, was first picked by Australia in 2017, having played only a handful of senior games. He has taken 27 wickets in 19 T20Is, as well as seven in as many ODI appearances, but has had regular injury problems and last featured in 2019.

A full season with Derbyshire will allow Stanlake to work on his red-ball game, having only played eight first-class matches since making his debut in 2015.

"I can't wait to get started with Derbyshire and show the supporters what I'm all about, it's a really exciting time for me," Stanlake said. "I'm keen to develop my red-ball game, and this move gives me the opportunity to hopefully help Derbyshire to build on their form across the competitions. The club are ambitious, they want to win trophies and hopefully I can be a part of that success."

Derbyshire had agreed a T20 deal with Stanlake for the 2019 season, only for it to be scuppered by injury. He was also pulled out of a T20 stint at Yorkshire the previous summer, after Cricket Australia chose to manage his workload.

He will line up in white-ball cricket at Derbyshire alongside fellow Australia international Ben McDermott.

Derbyshire's head of Cricket, Dave Houghton, said: "Billy is a player we've been watching for some time, there's not too many players of his quality available for all formats, so it's really pleasing to get him in. He's tall and he bowls at a high pace with a good level of bounce and variation.

"He's someone who has made his name with the white ball, but he's determined to show what he can do in first-class cricket as well. That hunger will be huge for us, and he's a great addition [to our] bowling attack."

Joan Laporta said Lionel Messi has already sent him a message congratulating him on being elected as the new president of Barcelona.

Messi, 33, voted in Sunday's election as Laporta saw off competition from Victor Font and Toni Freixa to return to the post he previously held between 2003 and 2010.

More than 55,000 club members participated in the vote, a turnout of just over 50%, with 30,184 of them voting for Laporta to set up champagne-soaked celebrations inside his campaign cabin at Camp Nou.

It was the first time Messi has voted in an election -- they usually take place in the summer when he is on international duty -- having been very critical of the club's previous president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, when he tried to leave last summer.

With Messi's contract expiring in June and his future still up in the air, Laporta said the fact he chose to exercise his right to vote suggests he's leaning towards staying at Barca under his presidency.

"It was really nice seeing Messi go and vote," Laporta told reporters on Monday. "It is more proof that he loves Barca. I am convinced that he wants to stay. And yes, he has already congratulated me for winning."

Throughout his campaign, Laporta reiterated that of the three candidates he was the most likely to convince Messi to remain at the club.

The forward wanted to leave the club last August but was blocked by Bartomeu's board. With Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain showing interest, Messi said he will wait until the end of the season before making a decision.

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola was also among those to congratulate Laporta, posting a message on social media. Laporta was the president that appointed Guardiola as Barca boss in 2008 and he has always said the door will remain open if he ever wants to return.

Meanwhile, Laporta has begun work on restructuring Barca off the pitch.

Former Valencia general manager Mateu Alemany will take on a similar role at the Catalan club, while sources have confirmed to ESPN that Jordi Cruyff, the son of Barca legend Johan, is likely to come in as sporting director.

Cruyff is head coach of Chinese Super League club Shenzhen FC but is expected to leave that position and it is possible that he flies into Barcelona later this week.

Barca's first game since Laporta was elected is against PSG on Wednesday in the Champions League, when they must overturn a 4-1 first-leg defeat.

In the middle of the celebration on Sunday, Laporta screamed "to Paris to see if we can produce another remontada [comeback]" in reference to Barca's 6-1 win against the French side in the same competition in 2017.

Mitchell Starc briefly threatened to burst the game open in Adelaide after New South Wales had declared behind in a game dominated by batsmen, but South Australia recovered to extend their advantage to 209.

The Redbacks are in a similar position to the previous round where they will need to judge a target to set on the final day - last week they were one wicket short of victory at the WACA - although the late loss of Travis Head, edging Nathan Lyon to slip, kept New South Wales in with a chance of bowling them out.

After starting their second innings with a lead of 116 they lost two early wickets as Starc, who earlier scored an unbeaten half-century, recaptured the late swing that he has struggled to find consistently this season in the first-class game. He shaped deliveries into the pads of Henry Hunt and Liam Scott to win lbw appeals which left South Australia 2 for 1 in the fourth over.

The in-form Head responded aggressively, getting off the mark with a cut over point for six off Starc, and added 77 for the third wicket with Jake Weatherald before a lovely delivery from Lyon found the edge late in the day and was neatly held by David Warner.

South Australia had visions of bowling New South Wales out to gain a significant lead when they had them 6 for 259. Kurtis Patterson reached his century before becoming the first first-class wicket for left-arm wristspinner Joe Medew-Ewen when he drove a catch to short cover.

Peter Nevill's half-century was ended when he edged the new ball to second slip straight after lunch before any hope the home side had of rattling through the lower order was halted by Starc and Sean Abbott as the pair added 80 for the seventh wicket following their partnership of 189 against Tasmania earlier in the season. South Australia have still to bowl a side out in this year's competition.

Women's global cricket tournaments are set to be expanded during the course of the next cycle of events, the ICC has announced on International Women's Day, meaning more teams will be competing in the Women's World Cup and Women's T20 World Cup. Also, a third women's global tournament, the Women's T20 Champions Cup - on paper seemingly resembling the men's Champions Trophy - has been added to the next cycle, which runs from 2023 to 2031.

The World Cup will have 10 teams playing 48 matches from 2029 (up from eight teams, and 31 matches, till 2025), the T20 World Cup will be expanded to 12 teams playing a total of 33 matches from 2026 (up from 10 teams, and 23 matches, till 2024). The Women's T20 Champions Cup is set to take place in 2027 and 2031, with six teams playing 16 matches.

These tournaments are part of 20 global tournaments planned for both men's and women's cricket combined in the 2023-31 cycle. Bids for hosting the events will soon be open to the ICC's member countries.

According to ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney, the revised formats would also mean more teams will be able to compete in and gain vital exposure in the qualification tournaments - the Women's Championship, World Cup Qualifier and the T20 Qualifier.

"This decision to expand our women's events ... allows us to give more member countries greater opportunities to compete on a global stage," Sawhney said. "This means that more teams will also get the opportunity to compete in the qualification pathways for the respective ICC events over the coming years. I am sure these initiatives will go a long way in helping us achieve our strategic goal of continuing to build strength and depth in the women's game.

"We have a clear focus and commitment to an ambitious long-term growth plan for the women's game. We have been building momentum around the women's game for the last four years investing in global broadcast coverage and marketing to drive fan engagement."

In 2000, the number of competing teams at the Women's World Cup was fixed at eight, while the T20 World Cup expanded from eight to 10 teams in 2014.

Bryce Street gave another example of his ability to bat long periods of time with a career-best 117, his third first-class century, as the match against Western Australia at the Gabba continued to be a forgettable experience for bowlers.

Street's hundred was followed by half-centuries for Matt Renshaw and Jimmy Peirson as Queensland closed in on Western Australia's total with the match seemingly destined for a stalemate.

Marnus Labuschagne had started the day in sight of a century but fell eight runs short when he got an inside edge into pad which looped to square leg.

Usman Khawaja had got himself set when he tickled a catch down the leg side and Street's 335-ball stay was ended by a spectacular catch at long leg by Liam Guthrie to haul in a top-edged hook.

Renshaw and Peirson then added 103 for the fifth wicket as Queensland, who are top of the table, opted against declaring behind to try and open up the match.

Jake Carder, playing his first Shield match of the season, claimed the last wicket of the day when Peirson was sharply caught at slip.

SONOMA, Calif. – Jacob Ruud took his No. 81 Classic BMW M2 CS Cup car back to victory lane in TC America presented by Skip Barber Racing School action at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday morning.

After leading practice session two, taking the pole position and both race wins, it was a dream weekend for Ruud to kickoff the season.

“The guys at Classic BMW have put together a perfect car for me this weekend. The tires are the key and this car is very light on them, so that’s where the real advantage is. I am very happy with how we are starting out 2021,” said Ruud.

Round two went green cleanly, but as soon as the TC field got to turn one, the action started and the first caution was called.

Race one winner Eric Powell, Tom Capizzi, and Toby Grahovec collided at turn one while fighting for the apex of the fast sweeping corner.

Grahovec would spin but continue as more cars tangled in the run up to turn two, including Mark LaMarra. Like Capizzi, LaMarra would not continue.

The race went back to green with 26 minutes remaining of the 40-minute event with Saturday’s winner Ruud leading overall in TCX, Kevin Boehm on top of the TC class and Jose Blanco leading the TCA field.

As the clock ran down to the 21-minute mark, the TCA action would heat up as race one winner Jesse Love moved his No. 22 TechSport Racing Toyota 86 past Blanco for the class lead.

Mark Pombo and the No. 61 Mini also pounced and slip past Blanco, dropping the polesitter from first to third in just two corners. Pombo continued with his speed and stalked Love, staying within a half second of the class leader for the next few laps.

As the race continued, Ruud extended his overall lead to just over three seconds and Boehm stretched his TC-class lead to more than four seconds with Rob Hines and the No. 21 TechSport Racing Nissan attacking Powell for second in class.

Hines’ pressure finally paid off as the sunny yellow Nissan would get past Powell for second in class at the final hairpin.

Austen Smith and the No. 51 Auto Technic Racing BMW followed Hines through a few turns later, dropping Powell to fourth in class with less than five minutes remaining with Michael Sousa’s No. 88 Hyundai fifth.

As the checkered flag flew, Ruud took the TCX and overall win over McCarthy and Roy Block’s No. 5 BMW.

Boehm, in only his second-ever TC race, cruised to the class victory ahead of Hines and Smith, with Love claiming the TCA victory over Pombo and the No. 62 Mini of Clay Williams.

SONOMA, Calif – The No. 47 NOLASPORT duo of Jason Hart and Matt Travis found themselves in the winner’s circle once again during the second round of Pirelli GT4 America competition Sunday at Sonoma Raceway.

After sweeping both qualifying sessions and claiming both overall wins, it was a magical weekend for the Pro-Am duo.

“What a weekend! I can’t believe it, the magic is happening!” said Travis.

Thirty-two cars took the Pirelli GT4 America Race 2 start with the entire field through cleanly on the opening lap ofr the 60 minute contest.

Race one winner Hart started from pole and kept the lead with Jeff Westphal and the No. 888 Rearden Racing Audi R8 LMS and Patrick Gallagher in the No. 00 Notlad Racing by RS1 Aston Martin Vantage GT4 settling for second and third overall and in the Pro-Am class.

Kenton Koch in the No. 15 BSport Racing Aston Martin and Andy Lee in the No. 8 GMG Racing Audi would get the jump on the No. 59 and No. 062 entries and claim fourth and fifth positions overall by the end of lap one.

Ten minutes into the race Koch would move to the inside of Gallagher and take over the third overall position at turn seven and start to chase down the No. 888 Audi for second.

Koch’s attack would pay off two laps later as the No. 15 would snag second position from Westphal and quickly close on Hart for the lead.

Back in the Silver division, Ryan Dexter and the No. 062 Dexter Racing Aston Martin would lead as Christian Szymczak and the No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 would battle Mads Siljehaug and the No. 71 Marco Polo Motorsports KTM X-Bow Evo GT4 for second position in class, ninth overall.

After starting eighth overall, Spencer Pumpelly and the No. 66 LaSalle Solutions TRG Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 would quietly move into the top six, getting past Brandon Davis’ No. 59 WR Racing Aston Martin at the final hairpin with 42 minutes left on the clock.

Pumpelly would continue his charge and sweep past Lee’s Audi at turn five for fifth overall with Davis also getting past the GMG Audi two turns later.

Seven minutes later Pumpelly would track down the Gallagher-driven No. 00, passing the Aston Martin at turn nine for fourth overall and in the Pro-Am division.

After the pit window closed for the required driver changes at the halfway point of the race, the No. 47 NOLASPORT Porsche, now with Travis driving, remained in the overall and Pro-Am lead, the No. 71 KTM with Nicolai Elghanayan took over control of the Silver class sitting sixth overall, and the No. 16 Capstone Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 of John Allen led in Am, ninth overall.

With 23 minutes remaining, Derek DeBoer and the No. 66 LaSalle Solutions TRG Porsche get around the No. 888 Rearden Racing Audi of Kris McCoy for second overall.

Paul Terry in the No. 59 Aston Martin would then get past McCoy a few minutes later for third overall and in Pro-Am.

The Silver class lead battle would then see Kenny Murillo, now piloting the No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG, close on leader Elghanayan and battle nose to tail for fourth overall.

Murillo would move past the KTM for the Silver-class lead as the two battled through turn one with 14 minutes remaining.

Minutes later Paul Terry’s No. 59 Aston Martin took advantage of a mistake by Deboer’s Porsche and nab the second position in Pro-Am. At the same time Murillo got past both DeBoer and Terry for second overall, sitting comfortably in the Silver class lead.

Ryan Dexter and the No. 062 Aston Martin, the race one Silver winners, moved past Elghanayan for second in the Silver class and DeBoer’s Porsche for fourth overall.

Deeper in the Pro-Am field, Black Swan Racing moved up into the sixth position, ninth overall, gaining a whopping 23 positions from the start of the race with Porsche Ace Jeroen Bleekemolen and Tim Pappas driving.

With eight minutes remaining, Pappas would move up even higher, slipping past both the No. 888 and No. 15 for fourth in Pro-Am and seventh overall, where the car would ultimately finish.

On the white flag lap, the Am battle would heat up as John Geesbreght’s No. 68 Smooge Racing Toyota GR Supra GT4 got around the No. 16 Capstone Motorsports Mercedes-AMG to take possession of the class lead.

As the checkered flag flew, the No. 47 NOLASPORT entry of Hart and Travis took the overall and Pro-Am win with the No. 59 WR Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 and the No. 66 LaSalle Solutions TRG Porsche second and third.

Black Swan Racing’s No. 54 Porsche was fourth with the No. 15 BSport Aston Martin fifth.

The Silver class saw the No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG of Kenny Murillo and Christian Szymczak win, with the No. 062 Dexter Racing Aston Martin and the No. 71 Marco Polo Motorsports KTM taking second and third, respectively.

The Am win went to the No. 68 Smooge Racing Toyota in only the team’s second race, followed by the No. 16 Capstone Motorsports Mercedes-AMG and the No. 46 NOLASPORT Porsche 718 Cayman GT4.

LAS VEGAS – In just his fourth race as a driver with Hendrick Motorsports, Kyle Larson completed his comeback to the NASCAR Cup Series with a victory Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After losing his ride with Chip Ganassi Racing and sitting out most of last season while under suspension for using racially-insensitive language, Larson came back to stock-car racing this year largely due to the belief that car owner Rick Hendrick had in his abilities.

Those abilities were on full display in Sin City, with Larson rim-riding when he needed to and moving down the track when situations warranted. In the end, he dominated both the box score and the finish.

Larson led six times for a race-high 103 of 267 laps, winning the second stage and largely dominating the final stage as well. He beat runner-up Brad Keselowski to the checkered flag by 3.156 seconds.

It made for an emotional victory lane celebration, as Larson soaked in his seventh career Cup Series win and first since October of 2019 during the playoffs at Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway.

“This was such an awesome race car. Cliff (Daniels, crew chief) and everybody did a great job preparing this piece. It was so much fun to drive,” noted Larson. “I could go wherever I wanted to. I knew we had a really good car once we got single-filed out; but just drafting early in the run was tough. Thank you so much to Mr. Hendrick, Jeff Gordon, and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports for the amazing opportunity I’ve been given.

“This is definitely special.”

While there were no cautions for incident in the first two stages, the final stage featured two notable incidents before a long green-flag run broke out to close the afternoon.

Larson led the field to the start of the final stage with 100 laps to go, pacing the action briefly, but was stifled by a caution with 98 to go after defending series champion Chase Elliott got loose exiting turn two and spun down the backstretch – just clipping Kurt Busch as he fought to save his Chevrolet.

Elliott was able to continue, but up front, Denny Hamlin was scored as the leader after just edging out Larson for the top spot prior to the yellow flag waving for the fifth time.

Racing resumed with 83 laps left, with Hamlin leading the first lap after the restart but a duel breaking out between he and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Martin Truex Jr., shortly after.

The action was slowed once more with 88 to go, when Aric Almirola cut down a left-front tire and pounded the wall in turn two to bring out the sixth and final caution of the day.

That led to split pit strategy, with Larson leading one group down pit road while Hamlin and Truex stayed on track with 14 others, making for an eclectic mix of tire wear and contenders at the front.

Larson restarted 17th but rocketed back to second in just 11 laps as his newer tires took hold. He resumed command on lap 206, leading from there until his final pit stop under green 20 laps later.

The Elk Grove, Calif., driver missed pit road the first time by – pinned on the top lane by the slower car of Timmy Hill – but got down for service after that and came out in front of Keselowski by a half second.

Following the final cycle of green-flag pit stops, Larson led the last 30 laps of the race, making the definitive pass of Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suarez on lap 238 en route to the victory.

“That was some fun racing on the restarts, so I hope everybody enjoyed it. I know I did,” noted Larson. “I had fun racing Brad (Keselowski) and Denny (Hamlin) and everybody and tried to give it away there coming to a green flag stop; but thankfully we had a good enough car to hold them all off.”

Keselowski was still pleased with his runner-up finish, running across the infield grass to congratulate Larson before returning to pit road and discussing his day.

“I’m just really happy for (Larson); I know he’s been through a lot in the last year and he’s a good kid who I’ve known for a little while and he has a good family. I’m just happy to see him bounce back,” Keselowski said. “He was really fast – had a lot of speed in all the lanes which was really impressive, usually you have to make a compromise, but they were really good.

“If Kyle Larson wasn’t here, we would have had a dominant day,” Keselowski added with a smile.

The Joe Gibbs Racing trio of Kyle Busch, Hamlin and Truex combined to lead 53 laps, but crossed the finish line third, fourth and sixth, respectively.

Keselowski’s Team Penske teammate, Ryan Blaney, broke up the JGR contingent by finishing fifth.

Behind Truex, Christopher Bell, Homestead winner William Byron, two-time defending race winner Joey Logano and Erik Jones closed the top 10.

Twenty-seven lead changes punctuated the day among 12 different drivers, with Keselowski and Larson splitting the first two stages – the first stage win of the season for both men.

The NASCAR Cup Series returns to action March 14 at Arizona’s Phoenix Raceway. Chase Elliott is the most recent winner at the one-mile desert oval, securing his championship title there last November.
