Gilles Simon has said he is taking a break from playing on the ATP Tour because of mental health concerns.

The 36-year-old Frenchman, a former world number six, was beaten in the Australian Open first round earlier in February and also lost his first match at the Open Sud de France on Tuesday.

He said: "With my heart not being there to travel and play in these conditions, I unfortunately have to take a break in order to preserve myself mentally."

Simon is now ranked 68th in the world.

He reached his career-high singles ranking in 2009 and won the last of his 14 titles on the men's tour in 2018.

"Hopefully my morale picks up as soon as possible," added the former Australian Open and Wimbledon quarter-finalist.

England's team management in India have given Rory Burns a reprimand for a late-night tweet following their defeat in the third Test in Ahmedabad.

Alex Hartley, the left-arm spinner who played 32 times for England Women between 2016 and 2019, tweeted soon after the men's team's defeat: "Nice of the England boys to get this test match finished just before England Women play tonight" with four clapping emojis, and encouraged her followers to watch their second ODI against New Zealand on BT Sport, for whom she is working as a pundit.

Burns had not tweeted for six months but took objection with Hartley's post, writing: "Very disappointing attitude considering all the 'boys' do to support the Women's game." His tweet was published shortly before 1am local time, and was liked by several members of the Test squad including James Anderson and Ben Stokes before its deletion around 45 minutes later.

Hartley replied to Burns, saying: "Think it's been taken the wrong way/out of context. No offence was meant. We are all test match fans."

Chris Silverwood, England's head coach, said on Friday: "It's not for me to judge on that one. That will be dealt with back in England, obviously. For me, I don't worry about things like that. I've got more on my plate this end to worry about.

"That's what I'll be encouraging the boys to do as well: keep their head in what's happening here." An ECB spokesperson subsequently confirmed to ESPNcricinfo: "Team management here in India have spoken with Rory."

Burns was dropped for England's defeat in Ahmedabad, following scores of 33, 0, 0 and 25 in the first two Tests of the series, with Zak Crawley replacing him at the top of the order. He is on a red-ball central contract with the ECB.

Hartley is not on a central contract and has not played for England since March 2019. She won a domestic contract with Thunder as part of the new regional structure at the end of last year, and the Guardian reported that she has been spoken to by Clare Connor, the ECB's director of women's cricket. Hartley is due to appear on BT Sport as a summariser in their coverage of Sunday's third ODI between England and New Zealand, after Katie George replaced her for the second ODI as scheduled.

Nat Sciver, the England allrounder, said: "I didn't actually see the tweet but I did hear about it from some of the girls today. Obviously Alex has her opinions and that's fair enough but maybe it wasn't the best timing. If we had lost a Test match in two days, I would be pretty mad. Maybe not the best timing, but that's Twitter for you."

Allrounder Shikha Pandey and wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia have been left out of India's limited-overs squad for the women's home series against South Africa in Lucknow. Veda Krishnamurthy is another fairly-experienced player who has been left out. The series begins on March 7 starting with three ODIs followed by five T20Is.

Pandey was India's second-highest wicket-taker during their previous international assignment: the women's T20 World Cup in March last year. In fact, her numbers were third-best - after Australia's Megan Schutt and England's Anya Shrubsole - among all fast bowlers in the competition. Her seven wickets in five games came at an average of 19.42 and economy of 6.85.

The ODI squad consist of two frontline wicketkeepers: the returning Sushma Verma, also part of the T20Is, and uncapped Sweta Verma. The team management can also use the services of Nuzhat Parveen or 16-year old Richa Ghosh as a wicketkeeping option, if required for the T20Is. Both Ghosh and Parveen are relatively inexperienced, though, having featured in just three T20Is so far.

Sushma last played the last of her 38 ODIs in April 2018, while her previous T20I appearance came even earlier, at the Asia Cup in Thailand in December 2016. While her wicketkeeping wasn't in question, she was eventually left out due to her batting form. Sushma has a highest of 41 in 21 ODI innings, while her T20I best is 12 in six innings. Meanwhile, this is Swetha's maiden call-up. She represents Uttar Pradesh in the domestic circuit.

The ODI squad, captained by Mithali Raj, also has Mansi Joshi returning to the mix after a series of stress fractures. Joshi, a fast bowler, returns to the squad for the first time in over 15 months. She wasn't part of the Women's T20 Challenge last November because she tested covid positive prior to departure. Batters Yastika Bhatia and C Pratyusha along with left-arm seamer Monica Patel are the three uncapped players in the mix.

Hard-hitting 17-year old top-order batter Shafali Verma has only been picked for there T20Is, along with batters Harleen Deol, Ayushi Soni and medium pacer Simran Bahadur. That squad will be captained by Harmanpreet Kaur.

The entire contingent is currently serving a five-day quarantine in Lucknow. All of them will have to clear two Covid-19 tests during this period before they can begin training.

On Friday, it was confirmed that the contracts of head coach WV Raman, along with the rest of the coaching staff, had been renewed. This is India's first assignment since their runners-up finish at the T20 World Cup last year.

India Women's squad for ODI series: Mithali Raj (Capt), Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Punam Raut, Priya Punia, Yastika Bhatia, Harmanpreet Kaur (vice-captain), D Hemalatha, Deepti Sharma, Sushma Verma (wicket-keeper), Swetha Verma (wicket-keeper), Radha Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Jhulan Goswami, Mansi Joshi, Poonam Yadav, C Prathyusha, Monica Patel

India Women's T20I squad: Harmanpreet Kaur (Capt), Smriti Mandhana (vice-captain), Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Harleen Deol, Sushma Verma (wicket-keeper), Nuzhat Parveen (wicket-keeper), Ayushi Soni, Arundhati Reddy, Radha Yadav, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Mansi Joshi, Monica Patel, C. Next week's T20Is in Auckland involving the Australia men's team and the England women's side have been relocated to Wellington, after Auckland was put into a week-long Covid-19 lockdown. The remaining matches of the two tours are set to be played behind closed doors.

Under Level 3 of the New Zealand government's alert system, which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced would take effect from 6 AM on Sunday morning following the emergence of another case of community transmission, sports events cannot take place, which means that New Zealand Cricket has shifted the two matches on March 5 in an attempt to keep both series going.

The rest of New Zealand has been placed in Level 2 of the alert system which means that matches will have to take place behind closed doors: New Zealand and England Women play their third ODI in Dunedin on Sunday and the men's series against Australia resumes in Wellington on Wednesday.

Under the current seven-day period of the lockdown there could be a change in time for the matches in Mount Maunganui on March 7 although a NZC spokesman indicated those games were likely to be without crowds.

Auckland was briefly under a Level 3 lockdown earlier this month after the emergence of community cases but these will be the first international matches of the season to be affected by Covid-19.

Bangladesh recently arrived in Christchurch for their two weeks of managed isolation ahead of their limited-overs matches later in March. The Australia Women side are also set to tour later next month.

South Australia 8 for 510 dec and 4 for 142 lead Western Australia 5 for 409 dec (Green 168*, Bancroft 126) by 243 runs

An intriguing final day was in prospect at the WACA after Cameron Green hit an unbeaten 168 before Western Australia declared behind to open up the game which was followed by a brief period where bowlers dominated.

Green was in sight of a maiden double century at tea (having made 197 earlier this season) when Shaun Marsh declared with the home side 101 behind on a surface that has been significantly in favour of the batsmen.

However, the Western Australia bowlers then took charge to rattle South Australia. Will Bosisto and Liam Scott were both taken at first slip by Marsh, Henry Hunt was given lbw to a very full delivery from Aaron Hardie and Travis Head, who made a double century in the first innings, edged an excellent delivery from Liam Guthrie to second to leave them 4 for 61.

South Australia were then put back on track to set a target on the final day by a positive partnership between Alex Carey and Harry Nielsen as the pair added 81 in 22 overs.

Led by Green, Western Australia enjoyed two sessions of batting dominance to comfortably avoid the follow-on. Cameron Bancroft, who scored a century on the second day, fell to the first over of the second new ball when he shouldered arms at Chadd Sayers, but Green brought up his second Shield century of the season - and sixth first-class hundred - with a strong on-drive in the last over before lunch.

After the interval Wes Agar produced an impressive spell which accounted for Hilton Cartwright, bowled through the gate, and Josh Inglis caught behind off an inside edge before Green and Hardie cut loose towards the tea break to added 61 in 10 overs.

Victoria 190 and 1 for 129 (Maddinson 53*) trail New South Wales 364 by 45 runs

Victoria gave themselves a chance to rescuing a draw against New South Wales with their top order putting in a stubborn display in the second innings led by Nic Maddinson's half-century.

They had conceded a lead of 174 on a day interrupted by light rain during the morning session but by the close Maddinson and captain Peter Handscomb had taken them to within sight of a lead.

Maddinson and Marcus Harris added 73 for the first wicket before Nathan Lyon broke through when Harris lofted a catch to point as he tried to go down the ground. It was Harris' third dismissal in four innings against Lyon and another start not converted by the Test opener.

The New South Wales quicks went at both Maddinson and Handscomb with the short ball but the pitch at Bankstown Oval does not have much pace in it.

Earlier in the day, New South Wales' last three wickets had added a further 60 to the total either side of the stoppage for rain. James Pattinson removed Trent Copeland and Pat Cummins in the space of four balls before Victoria were frustrated by a final-wicket stand of 37 between Lyon and Harry Conway.

If Victoria can save the game on the final day it would represent a good stint in Sydney having secured victory at the SCG last week before they were forced to extend their stay with this match relocated from Melbourne due to Covid-19 border restrictions.

Jasprit Bumrah has been released from India's squad for the fourth and final Test against England in Ahmedabad, starting March 4, due to "personal reasons." The BCCI have announced there will be no fresh additions. This now pegs the squad strength at 17.

Bumrah played in front of his home crowd at Motera for the first time in the recently-concluded third Test that finished on Thursday. India wrapped up the game inside two days to take a 2-1 lead in the series, which strengthened their chances of making the World Test Championship final against New Zealand at Lord's in June.

This series marked Bumrah's first appearance in a Test on home soil when he featured in the series opener in Chennai, where he picked up four wickets in India's 227-run loss. He was then rested for the second Chennai Test. Earlier this week, he didn't have much of a role in the third game too, bowling just six wicketless overs in England's first innings in a ten-wicket Indian win scripted by their spinners.

Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj are the other two pacers India can call upon in Bumrah's absence. Yadav was added to the squad ahead of the third Test after recovering from a calf injury he sustained on the tour of Australia.

If the team management chooses to play an extra spinner or an allrounder, then Kuldeep Yadav or Hardik Pandya could come into the fray.

India's squad for the fourth Test: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-capt), KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant (wk), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav

Green on big night: Not revenge, 'making it right'

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 27 February 2021 00:20

SAN FRANCISCO -- Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green set a career high with 19 assists in racking up a triple-double during a 130-121 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night.

That the win came against the same team that beat the Warriors less than a week ago, on a night when Green got ejected in the final seconds and apologized to his teammates after the game for his actions, made the whole performance a little sweeter for the veteran leader.

"A revenge game would be a bit of a stretch," Green said. "I would say it's just me coming out and making it right. Trying to do whatever I can to help this team get a win. Can't just forget about what happened last week, so I wouldn't call it a revenge game."

Green, 30, took responsibility for his emotional outburst in last Saturday's loss to the Hornets, telling reporters on Monday how much he felt he had let his teammates down. While Warriors coach Steve Kerr said in the immediate aftermath of his meltdown that Green had "crossed the line," both Kerr and Green's teammates were confident he would rise to the occasion and perform at a higher level.

Green has backed up his words, combining for 30 points, 42 assists and 30 rebounds since the loss in Charlotte, leading the Warriors to their first three-game winning streak of the season.

"It means my teammates are playing well and it means we're getting better," Green said while discussing his career-best assist night. "I think earlier on in the year there were things that I would see that other guys weren't seeing, but with the repetition, with the time together, guys are starting to see that. Kelly Oubre's been fantastic cutting off the ball, [Andrew Wiggins], obviously, I can always find Steph somewhere. [James Wiseman] coming and putting that pressure on the rim. So just me and my teammates are playing well."

Kerr, who has repeatedly stood by Green throughout the season, had high praise for his forward in the wake of his best game of the season. When asked if Green's skill set, notably his ability to defend multiple positions at a high level while also running an offense, was comparable to anybody else's in the game, Kerr named the most accomplished player in the league.

"Maybe LeBron [James]," Kerr said of the Los Angeles Lakers star. "When you talk about a guy with size who handles the ball and controls the game and then can defend at the other end, but there aren't many players. That's the only one that comes to mind. And obviously LeBron and Draymond are very different players, but just in terms of making an impact on both ends, having that size and that brain to control the game and understand everything that's happening, Draymond is really special."

Green's teammates always expected that he would turn things around after Saturday's episode and really seem to be enjoying playing with a player who seems reenergized this year playing alongside Curry and a variety of young players.

"He's just a natural leader," Warriors swingman Oubre said of Green. "He's somebody who can do multiple things on the basketball court. He stars in his role, and he's been doing that for his whole career. And that takes a lot of pride -- it takes a lot of selfless energy, and I think he's really the glue. And he continues to just put us in our spots, continue to speed the tempo of the game, and that's very rare when somebody his size, somebody who plays the 1-5, he can just dictate the game like that, so it's great."

Green struggled to find a rhythm at the start of the season because of a combination of a foot injury and COVID-19 protocols that forced him out of most of training camp and the first four games of the season. He said he finally feels like his old self again on the floor after putting in extra work with Warriors staffers and his own personal trainers in the offseason.

"I feel amazing," Green said. "I've been doing a lot of work with Rick Celebrini every day just really getting the body right. ... I was coming into the season in the best shape I had come into the season in years. And then, obviously, with the injuries and all of that, after sitting for a month, [conditioning] gets a little dicey, and trying to get my wind back and all of that stuff. ... It's all starting to come together for me."

It's not a coincidence that everything is starting to come together for the Warriors at the same time. The group is playing its best basketball of the season and is playing with an edge that grows sharper after each win.

"I kind of like the fact that nobody in the locker room was really that happy with the way we played," Kerr said after Friday's win. "We had some good moments and some good individual performances, but it was a wild game and an awkward game. The locker room was quiet and that's a good sign. We've won three in a row and nobody is that happy. We know we can play better. It's a sign that we think there is more to come."

Green feels the same way. The Warriors feel like they're hitting their stride at a nice time heading into the second half of the season.

"You can feel the confidence growing," Green said. "When we step out there on the floor, you just feel better about it. Going into the game, everybody's understanding the game plan better and executing the game plan better. So I definitely think we're starting to build some momentum. We got to continue to do that."

LeBron to Zlatan: No way I'll ever 'stick to sports'

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 27 February 2021 00:32

LeBron James dismissed Zlatan Ibrahimovic's criticism of his social activism and pointed out the hypocrisy of the AC Milan star's comments on Friday.

Ibrahimovic, whose time playing for his former team the LA Galaxy coincided with James' first season with the Lakers, criticized James on Thursday in an interview with UEFA for Discovery+ in Sweden, saying it was a "mistake" and "doesn't look good" when James and other "famous" people get involved in politics.

"He was the same guy who said when he was back in Sweden ... because his last name wasn't a certain last name, that he felt there was some racism going on when he was out on the pitch," James said. "I speak from a very educated mind, so I'm kind of the wrong guy to actually go at because I do my homework."

Several years ago, Ibrahimovic said he was subject to "undercover racism" in his native Sweden because his Bosnian roots gave him a surname that doesn't sound traditionally Swedish.

"I am not Andersson or Svensson," Ibrahimovic told Canal+ in 2018, referring to what he considered racist treatment from the media. "If I would be that, trust me, they would defend me even if I would rob a bank. They would defend me, I tell you."

James was undeterred by Ibrahimovic's stance against him and explained why he approaches off-the-court issues in the manner that he does.

"I would never shut up about things that are wrong," James said following the Lakers' 102-93 win over the Trail Blazers on Friday night. "I preach about my people and I preach about equality. Social injustice. Racism. Systematic voter suppression. Things that go on in our community.

"Because I was a part of my community at one point and saw the things that was going on and I know what's going on still because I have a group of 300-plus kids at my school that are going through the same thing and they need a voice. And I'm their voice. I'm their voice and I use my platform to continue to shed light on everything that may be going on, not only in my community, but around this country and around the world.

"So, there's no way I would ever just stick to sports because I understand how this platform and how powerful my voice is. "

James went on to credit former WNBA player Renee Montgomery, who became a part-owner of the Atlanta Dream on Friday after the league put pressure on former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, a Republican who opposed WNBA players' racial justice initiatives last summer, to sell her share of the team.

"You can just ask Renee Montgomery, if I would have shut up and just dribbled [what would have happened]," James said, later referring to the two-time WNBA champion as a "beautiful Black woman."

James also credited Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints for their commitment to social justice issues.

"It makes me feel proud to be a part of a generation where our voices are heard and guys are speaking from an educated mindset," James said. "But more importantly, when you speak from your heart, it rings bells even louder.

"And we've got a lot of guys speaking from the heart that didn't believe they had a voice at one point in time or now they're coming into it and they see that they can have a voice and that their voice really matters. That makes me proud."

James' I Promise School in Akron, Ohio, not only educates hundreds of at-risk children in his hometown, but also provides affordable housing, a meal program and job training for the students' families.

His More Than a Vote organization was also instrumental in mobilizing more than 40,000 volunteers to work at polling centers in November's general election in an effort to thwart voter suppression.

"As athletes, we've been hearing this for a long time," James said. "You should [feel] privileged. You should be thankful to be able to dribble a ball or run a football or be able to do the 100-yard dash or be able to swing a baseball bat and things of that nature, You shouldn't be able to speak about anything else, no matter if it's right or wrong, you should just do that. But that's not the case. That's not the case anymore. As long as I'm around, it won't be the case for a long time."
