Tiger Woods was involved in a serious car accident Tuesday morning near Los Angeles and transported to a local hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The one-car rollover crash occurred at 7:12 a.m. local time as Woods' vehicle was traveling north on Hawthorne Blvd. near Blackhorse Rd. on the border of Rancho Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates.

According to the LASD, the jaws of life were needed to extract Woods from the vehicle.

Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, told Golf Digest in a statement: "Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support."

Images of the wreckage were shared on social media and showed a badly damage vehicle off the side of the road.

Woods, 45, was in Los Angeles for the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational, which his foundation runs. Woods, who is still recovering from a Dec. 23 back surgery, did not play in the tournament at Riviera, but he was on hand Sunday to join CBS' Jim Nantz in the booth and take part in the trophy presentation.

He then stayed in the LA area to do a two-day shoot with Golf Digest/Golf TV at Rolling Hills Country Club, according to Golf Digest, who added that Woods joined Dwayne Wade and David Spade for Monday's portion before not showing up Tuesday.

Australia, Qatar withdraw from Copa America

Australia and Qatar, the two non-South American sides due to take part in this year's Copa America, have pulled out of the tournament, the secretary general of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said on Tuesday.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)

"Qatar and Australia will not come to play in the Copa America," Gonzalo Belloso told Argentine radio station Radio Red.

He said the decision followed the Asian Football Confederation, of which both Australia and Qatar are members, moving forward dates for 2022 World Cup qualifiers, creating a clash.

The Copa America, the oldest tournament in international soccer, was held over from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is due to be hosted in two nations for the first time.

The 12 sides were to be split into northern and southern groups, with Qatar playing in the northern section against Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and hosts Colombia.

While Qatar are World Cup hosts, they are participating in the first two rounds of qualifying because they double as Asian Cup qualifiers.

Australia were in the southern group with Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and hosts Argentina.

A CONMEBOL source told Reuters they will look at the possibility of inviting two other teams to replace Australia and Qatar but the tournament will go ahead regardless, with 10 or 12 sides.

"Nothing will change, we will play with 10 if we have to," the source said on condition of anonymity.

"No matter what happens, it's the same format, same prize money, everything stays the same."

The tournament is scheduled to kick off in Buenos Aires on June. 11. and end with the final in Barranquilla, Colombia on July. 10.

Tiger Woods was injured Tuesday in a single-car crash near Los Angeles.

"Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries," his agent Mark Steinberg said. "He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support."

According to the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept., emergency personnel responded to a rollover crash at approximately 7:12 a.m. local time, and extricated Woods from the vehicle using the "jaws of life."

Woods' car "sustained major damage" in the crash, according to the sheriff's department.

KAT hopes for more NBA head-coaching diversity

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 23 February 2021 11:58

The initial reaction from Karl-Anthony Towns when he learned that Chris Finch would replace Ryan Saunders as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves was "shock."

Like the rest of the world, Towns found out Sunday through the media following the team's loss in New York to the Knicks, its fourth straight defeat.

"I was eating my Joe's Pizza in New York with my father and the next thing you know, news came out and we were all shocked," Towns said.

But, once that initial emotion faded, the two-time NBA All-Star became supportive of the decision. However, he couldn't help but notice the strong reaction from his league peers, such as Portland Trail Blazers guards Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, in regards to another African-American being passed over for a head coaching role in current Wolves assistant David Vanterpool.

"I'd be remiss if I didn't come on here and mention the amazing work that men of color are doing in this world. Not only in every other sport and through social justice and every other part of this world and in the organization or whatever the case may be, but for basketball," Towns said. "For what my job is, there's a lot of amazing men of color out there that deserve the opportunity to lead a team and to run an organization and have a chance to make their mark in this league not with a jersey on, but with a suit on. And, I say that with meaning.

"But, like I said, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the amazing work David Vanterpool has put in and as a man who looks like me, I can't wait to see him get a job where he can flourish and be a head coach and run a team," he continued. "We're so honored and blessed to have him here on this coaching staff and get to continue learning from him and soak up all the wisdom and experience he has from playing professional and also from being a coach. And, with all that experience and with all that wisdom and just knowledge, it makes us that much better as a team, it makes us that much better as a coaching staff and it makes our new head coach, it just gives him so many weapons."

Out of 30 NBA teams, there are currently seven Black head coaches.

There's Lloyd Pierce with the Atlanta Hawks, the Houston Rockets' Stephen Silas, the Cleveland Cavaliers' J.B. Bickerstaff, the Phoenix Suns' Monty Williams, the Detroit Pistons' Dwane Casey, the Philadelphia 76ers' Doc Rivers and Tyronn Lue of the LA Clippers.

"As a man of color myself, you would love to see more coaches that resemble what me and you look like on the sidelines, but you've got to support the organization in everything you do and understand," Towns said. "I understand how everything is, but at the end of the day, the organization made the choice that they felt was best for this organization and you've got to be a professional in all of this.

"You've got to be a professional down the line," he said. "So, when the decision was made, my mind, just because of how many times I've dealt with this, just adjusted and came to an adjustment mode and just wanted to welcome our new coach and try to be here as much as possible for him and lean on each other to get through this adjustment period for both of us."

Towns made it clear that he wants to finish his career in Minnesota, but described this latest coaching move as "just the business."

"I would love to finish my career here in Minnesota until obviously the business calls or business changes or whatever the case may be," Towns said. "I don't plan on it to or at least I'm not hoping to make the decision. I want to build something great here. I want to build a legacy in Minnesota. I'm just everyday trying to help our coaching staff and help this organization build a culture."

Mariners GM 'embarrassed' by exec's comments

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 23 February 2021 11:03

Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto and manager Scott Servais are doing damage control with players who were directly mentioned or referenced by former team president and CEO Kevin Mather in an online video that led to his resignation.

The message over the past two days to those affected has been: You have every right to be upset.

"We are very open with our players and urge them to be the same. And if they want to be angry, they should be, frankly. They should be insulted," Dipoto said Tuesday. "But at the same time, they are collectively driven toward what we're trying to do here as a team."

The video posted over the weekend showed Mather expressing his views of the club's organizational strategy and making controversial remarks about players to the Bellevue, Washington, Rotary Club on Feb. 5. He took insensitive shots at a former All-Star from Japan and a top prospect from the Dominican Republic for their English skills. He also admitted the team might be manipulating service time for some of its young players.

Mather apologized Sunday and then abruptly resigned the next day, but not before casting a pall over the organization as it began full-squad workouts in Arizona.

Dipoto and Servais are both angry.

"I'm embarrassed that this is the way we're viewed because for those of you who've been around me or Scott or this team, this is not how we're wired," Dipoto said. "It's embarrassing to be categorized or deal with the stigma that we are now pinned with, and we have to shed it. It's ours to bear and we now have to be accountable to that, and then find a way to grow beyond it."

Mather's most inflammatory comments were about the English skills of former All-Star pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma and top prospect Julio Rodriguez and drew the strongest responses from Dipoto and Servais.

Servais referenced his winter baseball experiences in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela and the Mariners' season-opening trip to Japan two years ago.

"It's an eye-opener. You really, really appreciate what foreign players have to go through. Not just communicating, but then trying to figure out how to play the game at the highest level," Servais said. "So nobody has more appreciation for it than I do and it's a subject I'm very sensitive to."

Mather undermined strategy on the baseball side, admitting that the team was possibly manipulating service time for top prospects Jarred Kelenic and Logan Gilbert. Mather also divulged information about contract negotiations with Kelenic and pitcher James Paxton and called veteran Kyle Seager "overpaid."

Mather drew the ire of the MLB Players Association by saying neither Kelenic nor Gilbert would be with the major league club on Opening Day as a way to keep club control for longer.

But Servais and Dipoto said that decisions on the roster have not been made and that the plans for Kelenic and Gilbert have been laid out and communicated to both.

"All of our players are aware of what their path is, what their development plan looks like, and we're very direct in how we share it," Dipoto said.

Servais said he met with several players directly mentioned by Mather.

"I'd say that the temperature was very hot with a number of guys that certainly their names were mentioned for a number of different reasons," Servais said. "It wasn't surprising at all. But I feel very good about this group and I am proud of the way they've handled things so far. We could talk about this all day long and our players will continue to handle things the right way."

Sources: Giants, LHP Kazmir strike minors deal

Published in Baseball

The San Francisco Giants and veteran left-hander Scott Kazmir have reached agreement on a minor league deal with an invitation to big league camp, sources tell ESPN's Buster Olney.

Kazmir, 37, is attempting to make his first appearance in a major league game since 2016, with sources saying the lefty's fastball velocity reached 92-93 mph in his most recent bullpen session.

Kazmir went 10-6 with a 4.56 ERA in 26 starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016, but missed the entire 2017 season because of a hip injury. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves ahead of the 2018 season, but his comeback bid fell short when he failed to win the No. 5 spot in the Braves' rotation coming out of camp.

A three-time All-Star, Kazmir is 108-96 with a 4.01 ERA over 12 seasons.

Grant Holloway ready for fast time in Madrid

American sprint hurdler competes in Spanish city on Wednesday with world record in his sights

Grant Holloway has another crack at Colin Jackson’s long-standing world 60m hurdles record in Madrid on Wednesday (February 24) and the omens are good considering the Spanish city’s history of hosting record-breaking performances.

Maurice Greene, Andre Cason and Leroy Burrell have broken the world 60m flat record in Madrid in the past, whereas the women’s 60m mark has fallen to Nelli Cooman, Merlene Ottey and Irina Privalova in the same city.

Holloway, the 2019 world champion from the United States, has run 7.32 this season – just two hundredths of a second shy of Jackson’s mark, which was set in Sindelfingen in 1994.

“It’s definitely possible,” Holloway told World Athletics. “I’m in great shape.”

“It’s my last race of the indoor season so if the record falls, it falls. If it doesn’t fall, then I want to make sure my race is at a high level.”

This ‘Villa de Madrid’ is the final event in the 2021 World Indoor Tour Gold but the only Brit in action is Andy Pozzi, who lines up in the sprint hurdles with Holloway. A number of Irish athletes are involved, though, such as sprinter Leon Reid and in-form 800m runner Nadia Power.

In the field events, all eyes will be on long jump talent Juan Miguel Echevarria.

For middle-distance fans, women’s world indoor 1500m record-holder Gudaf Tsegay takes on fellow Ethiopian and 3000m world leader in 2021, Lemlem Hailu.

Ethiopians Selemon Barega and Getnet Wale are expected to fight it out in the men’s 1500m, meanwhile, with Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski continuing to hone his form ahead of the European Indoor Championships on his home soil next week.

The events are underway from 15.30 local time and BBC is covering the action online and via its red button. The timetable and results can be found by clicking here and you can follow updates on AW’s twitter feed.

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton has hinted that he may be retired before the World Cup in 2023.

The 35-year-old fly-half also confirmed that he is fit to return for Saturday's Six Nations match away to Italy after missing the defeat by France.

It was when talking about Ireland learning from their opening two losses that Sexton suggested he may not feature at the next World Cup.

"The coaches have come in, they've done a fantastic job," he said.

"There are lots of examples that we have gone through as a team and said that it wasn't good enough for international standard. And, despite all of those things, we still came within a penalty away from winning the game.

"It's very different to what it was before, but we will be better for this going forward, of that I am convinced.

"If we talk about World Cup cycles - I might not be part of the full cycle - this group will definitely be better for this type of coaching and structures."

When asked more specifically about when he might retire, the Leinster captain insisted his thoughts have not changed.

"I have always been in the same position. I absolutely love what I do, I am very privileged to do it and I am still loving it, and I will keep playing for now - that has never changed," he continued.

"I have spoken about admiration for athletes that have stayed at the top of their game for a long time but you've got to be careful with what I said or what someone else said because it can get lost a bit.

"For the moment, I am still motivated - I hope my team-mates and coaches see how motivated I am to train well every day and keep going."

A head injury suffered by Sexton in Ireland's opening Six Nations defeat by Wales in Cardiff led to him not being available for the loss to France in Dublin.

However, while praising the work that head coach Andy Farrell and his coaching team have done in preparing the squad, the 35-year-old confirmed he is available for selection for the trip to Rome.

"I am good to go. I am available for selection," he said, while also adding that he is close to agreeing a new contract with Leinster.

"I was very disappointed to miss out on the French game. It was a game I really wanted to play in but I just didn't quite get there, didn't hit the return to play protocol markers, so I had to wait a little bit longer.

"I trained fully last week and fully this week, so good to go."

Ireland have scored two tries in this year's Six Nations so far, the fewest on any side, and sit fifth in the table, with opponents Italy in sixth.
