Live Report - India vs England, 2nd Test, Chennai, 4th day

Welcome to day four of our live report of the second India-England Test from Chennai. Join us for updates, analysis and colour. You can find our traditional ball-by-ball commentary here

*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local

11.25am: Do as you would be done by

Rishabh Pant was on the receiving end of a smart bit of work behind the stumps by Ben Foakes yesterday, but produced almost a carbon copy to dismiss Dan Lawrence earlier today. Say what you like about this pitch, but it's provided the stage for some fantastic keeping.

11.15am: Only one winner

Well, that is a pretty comprehensive working over. Ben Stokes has departed for 8 off 51, as un-Stokesian an innings as you can imagine, and that is pretty much all down to one man - that man - who is heading ever more certainly towards a ten-for to go with his hundred. R Ashwin bowled 38 deliveries to Stokes, with 35 dots before finally picking up the big W. Shake of the head from the batsman as he trudged off, but no doubt about the thick inside edge on to pad before the squirting out towards slip. Tenth time he's succumbed to Ashwin... and he could end up facing him in as many as seven more Tests this year. *Gulp*

10.25am: Struggle is real

Just three runs conceded in five overs from R Ashwin so far this morning - and it's been all about the battle with Ben Stokes, who has faced all but three balls from the offspinner. Ashwin is tinkering away, switching from round to over the wicket, testing the batsman with changes of pace and angle of attack. A good contest, in other words. Patel has not quite had the same control, with both batsmen sweeping him, and Ishant Sharma is now on for a burst.

10.05am: Finding a way

England's two best batsmen, the only members of the top six with previous experience in India, are currently trying to save a bit of face for their side. Root has started to find his range with the sweep again, while Stokes is trying to work out how best to manage the threat of Ashwin into the rough outside his off stump.

Before the start of play, England's batting consultant on this tour and a man who was adept at finding his way whatever the conditions, Jonathan Trott, spoke to the host broadcaster.

"It's up to each individual player. They'll all have worked hard on their options against spin. There are good seamers as well in the India side. They've got to work as a pair, rotate the strike, picking up length quickly, move feet and back options. [Method for defence] depends on their contact points. Whether that's using their feet or getting right back on their stumps. We've seen how people who have scored runs have gone about it.

[Toughest conditions for England to face?] "I think so. This wicket is a bit tricky; the last wicket was a bit tricky as well and we scored runs on it. The guys will be confident."

9.52am: Ashwin strikes first ball!

All sorts going on here... Dan Lawrence is the man to depart, done by Ashwin for the second time in the match, and it's thanks to another fine bit of glovework in this Test. Rishabh Pant's wicketkeeping has largely been patronised, given it's his ability with the bat that has got him in the side, but this was a fantastic bit of work, taking the ball down the leg side after Lawrence had been nutmegged on the charge, and then stretching to break the bails as his feet went from under him. Lawrence leapt for his ground but couldn't get back, and heads off disappointed once again: that might be his last on-field act of the tour. India one seventh of the way there, as Stokes walks out into Ashwin's crosshairs.

9.40am: Ax-ing questions

Virat Kohli has started off with Mohammed Siraj, who's had an eventful Test despite initial speculation that he was going to get a "Thanks for coming" in the manner of Adil Rashid at Lord's in 2018, and Axar Patel this morning, keeping the Chepauk crowd waiting in their hopes for more Ashwin heroics. You can bet he'll be on once Ben Stokes walks in... and with Patel starting right on the money to Root, who knows, that might be fairly soon.

9.15am: Finish them

4:49
Is Ashwin a better allrounder than Stokes?

Hello and welcome to the last knockings. India have dominated proceedings in the Chennai rematch and after three days stand on the verge of a series-levelling victory - in Mortal Kombat fashion, it's time to finish their opponent off. Can England produce a show of character in the teeth of certain defeat? Has Joe Root got parting shot innings in him? Will R Ashwin get four more wickets to walk off the pitch and into a very special club? We will find out soon enough.

Shubman Gill taken for scans after blow to left forearm

Published in Cricket
Monday, 15 February 2021 21:29

Shubman Gill, the India opening batsman who copped a blow in his left forearm while fielding at forward short-leg on the third evening, has been taken for a "precautionary scan", the BCCI confirmed on Tuesday, the fourth morning of the second Test in Chennai.

It was the last ball of the 18th over of the England second innings, bowled by R Ashwin, and Dan Lawrence stretched out to get to the pitch of the ball and swept with power. Gill tried to take evasive action at the close-in position but the ball still hit him in his hand.

Only one over was bowled on the day after that incident, and the BCCI said via a tweet on Tuesday: "Shubman Gill sustained a blow on his left forearm while fielding on Day 3 of the 2nd Test. He has been taken for a precautionary scan. The BCCI Medical Team is assessing him. He won't be fielding today."

The fourth day started with England at 53 for 3 chasing 482 for victory, and a 2-0 lead.

Gill made his Test debut on the recent tour of Australia, and scored 45, 35*, 50, 31, 7 and 91 in his three Tests there as India won the series 2-1. He finished the series with an impressive average of 51.80, only behind Ravindra Jadeja's 85.00 and Rishabh Pant's 68.50 among Indians. Then, in the first Test against England, also in Chennai, Gill scored 29 and 50 even as India lost by 227 runs to fall 1-0 back in the four-Test series, and he had scores of 0 and 14 in the ongoing game.

Braves invite 2B Kipnis to join spring training

Published in Baseball
Monday, 15 February 2021 20:47

ATLANTA -- Two-time All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis is one of 25 non-roster players who have been invited by the Atlanta Braves to spring training.

The team announced the list Monday. Kipnis agreed to a minor league contract with Atlanta after hitting .237 in 44 games with his hometown Chicago Cubs in 2020 following nine seasons with Cleveland.

Kipnis, 33, was an All-Star with Cleveland in 2013 and 2015. He has a career .260 batting average. In 2019, his last season with the Indians, he hit .245 with 17 homers and 65 RBIs.

The Braves previously reached minor league deals with veteran infielders Pablo Sandoval and Ehire Adrianza.

Adrianza, 31, would receive a $1.5 million, one-year contract if added to the Braves' 40-man roster. Sandoval would receive a $1 million, one-year deal if added to the 40-man roster.

Right-hander Carl Edwards Jr., another veteran, also has been invited to spring training as a non-roster player.

The Braves' first workout for pitchers and catchers is scheduled for Thursday as they begin their second full spring training at CoolToday Park in North Port, Florida.

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has advanced to a potential semifinal showdown against Serena Williams at the Australian Open by overpowering Su-Wei Hsieh 6-2, 6-2.

Osaka will meet the winner of Tuesday night's quarterfinal match between Williams and No. 2-seeded Simona Halep. Williams is three wins away from a record-tying 24th major title.

Against Hsieh, Osaka hit seven aces, lost only two points on her first serve and was never broken.

Osaka has won 19 consecutive matches, a streak that includes a US Open title in September. The streak also includes Osaka's fourth-round win last week, when she saved two match points and swept the final four games to overtake Garbine Muguruza.

The New York Mets are in agreement with free-agent center fielder Kevin Pillar on a one-year deal, a source confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

MLB Network first reported the news.

Preds-Stars off at city's request amid winter storm

Published in Hockey
Monday, 15 February 2021 18:04

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars postponed their home game Monday night against the Nashville Predators after a request from city officials not to play because of the impact extreme winter weather had on the area.

With significant power outages in North Texas and throughout the state, the NHL said the decision to postpone the game was made by the teams, on-ice officials and the league upon the advice of Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson.

The NHL didn't announce the postponement until about a half-hour before the scheduled start of the game. There was power at the American Airlines Center at the time.

The game was set to be the fifth of the Stars' season-long, eight-game homestand. No makeup date was announced. The teams were already set to play at the American Airlines Center on Tuesday night, and it wasn't immediately clear if that game could also be impacted.

The NBA's Dallas Mavericks, who share the venue with the Stars, are scheduled to host the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

Texas was dealing with unusually snowy conditions and bitterly cold temperatures -- with wind chills below 0 degrees Fahrenheit -- as part of a widespread winter storm. The state's overwhelmed power grid began imposing blackouts that are typically only seen during 100-degree summer days.

As nightfall threatened to plummet temperatures again into single digits, officials warned that homes still without power would likely not have heat until at least Tuesday, as frustration mounted and the state's electric grid came under growing demand and criticism.

President Joe Biden declared an emergency in Texas in a statement Sunday night. The declaration is intended to add federal aid to state and local response efforts.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Johnson to leave Duke early, prep for NBA draft

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 15 February 2021 17:30

Duke freshman and projected lottery pick Jalen Johnson is opting out of the rest of the season and will declare for the NBA draft, according to the school.

Johnson, the No. 13 prospect in the ESPN 100 last season, has had an up-and-down season with the Blue Devils. He opened his career with 19 points, 19 rebounds and 5 assists against Coppin State but suffered a foot injury a couple of weeks later and missed three games. After returning to the starting lineup, Johnson has come off the bench for the past three games. He played a combined 23 minutes the past two games, scoring just three points in eight minutes against NC State this past weekend.

"I appreciate everything about my time at Duke," Johnson said in a Duke news release Monday night. "Coach (Mike Krzyzewski), my teammates and the program have been nothing but supportive throughout this season, especially during the rehab of my foot injury. My family, coach and I have made the decision that I should not play the remainder of this season so I can be 100 percent healthy in preparation for the NBA Draft."

In 13 games, Johnson averaged 11.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

"This was not easy but we feel it's best for my future," Johnson said. "I have nothing but love for the brotherhood and thank my teammates and everyone associated with the program. Duke will always have a special place in my heart and will always be a part of me."

Johnson hasn't played a complete season since his junior year of high school. As a senior, he left IMG Academy without playing a game before suiting up for nine games at Nicolet High School (Wisconsin).

"While we are encouraged by what we are seeing medically, for Jalen's future, we believe this decision is in his best interest," Krzyzewski said in the release. "We are ultimately careful with every one of our players and will continue to support Jalen as he progresses toward his goal of playing professional basketball."

ESPN has Johnson ranked No. 6 in its NBA draft rankings, the No. 1 small forward in the class.

Embiid late scratch vs. Jazz with back tightness

Published in Basketball
Monday, 15 February 2021 18:09

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid sat out of Monday night's game against the league-leading Utah Jazz with back tightness.

Embiid had been listed as questionable for Monday's game during the day, but coach Doc Rivers said he was unaware of any issues with his superstar big man during his pregame media session, telling reporters he expected Embiid to play.

But then, a short time before tip-off, Embiid was ruled out with back tightness. It's been an ongoing source of discomfort for him dating back for a month -- and especially since he took a hard fall against the Los Angeles Lakers in Philadelphia on Jan. 27 when he was fouled by LeBron James.

Embiid is in the middle of the best season of his career, putting himself in the middle of the MVP conversation thanks both to his play and that of the Sixers as a whole, who entered Monday with the best record in the Eastern Conference.

That said, Philadelphia has lost back-to-back games to the Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns.

Philadelphia is 1-4 when Embiid doesn't play this season, with the lone win coming in Indiana on January 31 and requiring a crazy fourth-quarter comeback to get the Sixers the win.

The Sixers started Mike Scott in Embiid's place on Monday, with Ben Simmons assuming the role of the Sixers' center.
