After finishing second for the second straight event and seventh time since his last victory, Xander Schauffele was licking his wounds as he departed TPC Scottsdale.

He and Jordan Spieth had entered Sunday’s final round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open tied for the lead, but they shot 71 and 72, respectively, and watched as Brooks Koepka fired a closing 6-under 65 to end a lengthy losing streak of his own.

“Brooks is a great example for me,” said Schauffele, who finished 18 under, a shot back of Koepka. “He hasn't been in great form, missed few cuts, and comes out and wins, so there is something to that, something to his recipe, and he's definitely figured it out.”

Schauffele and Spieth were slow out of the gates Sunday, playing in “slow and stale air.” Schauffele didn’t make a birdie until the ninth hole, and his three birdies from No. 15 onward were negated by a costly water ball and bogey at the par-4 17th hole. Spieth made just two birdies.

“On the last hole I joked with Jordan, ‘We did it again,’” said Schauffele, who last held the 54-hole with Spieth at the 2018 Open at Carnoustie, where they shot 74 and 76, respectively. “Wasn't quite the pair of 42s on the front nine like the British, but you know, final groups, I've been in a couple, not many, not enough, they get a little nervous. People kind of play a little safe. Not hitting their putts hard enough. It wore on our whole group. Putts were lipping out, miss-clubbing, kind of weird shots, and it just wasn't the same feel the first couple days.”

Added Schauffele: “I'm disappointed. I heard Jordan say that me and him could have made it a two-man race. … Winning is tough. I'll lick my wounds and come back.”

Chelsea's Pulisic kept out with family issue - Tuchel

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 07 February 2021 15:26

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said that Christian Pulisic was kept out the squad for Sunday's win over Sheffield United due to a family issue.

- Chelsea ratings: Mount, Werner both 8/10 as Blues stay hot

The German tactician did not further elaborate after the 2-1 win at Bramall Lane on the United States international's absence.

"Christian has some family issues to resolve and family is always first so we decided to give him a rest for this game," Tuchel said.

Chelsea extended their recovery under Tuchel with Sunday's win thanks to a strike by Mason Mount and a penalty by Jorginho, the third in four games since he replaced Frank Lampard.

Tuchel heaped praise on his compatriot Timo Werner who played a big part in both goals in Sunday's win and looks to be putting a bad run of form behind him.

"We are very happy. This was a big step forward," Tuchel told Sky Sports.

"He won the decisive penalty against Tottenham [last week] and today again, and the first goal was an amazing run and an amazing assist. The goals will come if he continues like this. I do not worry."

Werner has not scored in the Premier League since he got his fourth goal of the season in early November and he cut a forlorn figure in the final games of Frank Lampard's time as coach which ended with Lampard's dismissal in January.

Werner said he was happy with his assists on Sunday but conceded it had been a long time since he was last on the score sheet.

He also said Tuchel was asking different things of him than Lampard and was pushing him into a more central role.

"Now I play a left [No.] 10, not a left winger, so I have more space for my runs in the middle and I can play behind the striker or with a [No.] 10 behind me as a second striker so very good for me," Werner said.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady lured tight end Rob Gronkowski out of a one-year retirement stint and convinced the Bucs to take a chance on wide receiver Antonio Brown, who was out of football one year ago.

Those two players came up big for Brady in the first half of Super Bowl LV on Sunday, with Gronkowski catching two touchdown passes and Brown a third to give the Bucs a 21-6 lead over the Kansas City Chiefs at halftime.

Brown's 1-yard touchdown came on an angle route working against defensive back Tyrann Mathieu with 10 seconds to go in the half.

In the first quarter, Brady hooked up with Gronk for their 13th postseason touchdown on an 8-yard pass, topping Joe Montana and Jerry Rice for the most postseason touchdowns by a QB-receiver combo in NFL history. It was also the first time in Brady's 10 Super Bowls that he scored an opening-quarter touchdown.

On the play, which gave the Bucs a 7-3 lead, Gronkowski ran across the back of the formation and into the flat. It was Gronkowski's fourth career receiving touchdown in the Super Bowl, breaking a five-way tie for second most in Super Bowl history.

He now trails only Rice, who has eight.

Brady and Gronk would replicate that magic in the second quarter. The Bucs lined up for a 40-yard field goal after stalling deep in Kansas City territory, but the Chiefs' Antonio Hamilton jumped offsides, giving the Bucs a first down.

On the next play, Brady found Gronkowski for a 17-yard touchdown pass, with Gronk faking like he was running to the corner of the end zone before turning inside and losing L'Jarius Sneed, extending the Bucs' lead to 14-3.

Tech Official Dies After Night Two Of World Series

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A New Smyrna Speedway track official died overnight following Saturday night’s World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing program.

Matt Weaver of Short Track Scene reported the story initially, and other media outlets have since confirmed the death of longtime racing official Rusty Crews early Sunday morning.

Crews was 59.

The details surrounding Crews’ death are unknown pending an autopsy, however, according to a news release from the Volusia County Sherriff’s Office, he attempted to break up a fight between crew members at the conclusion of the sportsman feature and was later transported to AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach.

An Emergency Services Synopsis from the city of New Smyrna Beach patrol log noted that “Officers responded to assist deputies with a large fight” at 12:24 a.m. Sunday at New Smyrna Speedway.

The Volusia County Sherriff’s Office said that Crews “went in to disperse the crowd, according to witnesses, and also became involved in an altercation. Afterward, with the crowd dispersed and parties separated, witnesses said Crews sat down and began having a medical episode.

“A witness started performing CPR on Crews before an EMS crew arrived, took over CPR and transported Crews to the hospital. At this point in the active investigation, there is no evidence of a direct link between Crews’ death and any specific actions of anyone involved in the altercation.

An autopsy to determine Crews’ cause of death was scheduled for Sunday.

New Smyrna Speedway owner Robert Hart reflected on Crews’ loss in a statement on Sunday afternoon.

“Rusty was a true friend, always looked out for others at the racetrack, and loved racing,” said Hart. “I can’t describe how terrible this loss is.”

Track manager Rusty Marcus added, “This is an incredibly difficult time and during our employee meeting numerous friends of Crews stated that his desire would be to continue with the program and keep racing. While this is a tough time, we are going to move forward and honor his memory as a racing family.”

New Smyrna Speedway officials noted that the track will continue to work with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and will make further updates and statements as information becomes available.

Saturday marked the second of nine consecutive nights of racing at the half-mile paved oval during the 55th annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

Sitting five shots back of leaders Jordan Spieth and Xander Schuaffele through 54 holes of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Brooks Koepka believed he still had a chance.

“Anything can happen in those closing four or five holes,” Koepka said Saturday afternoon at TPC Scottsdale.

A day later Koepka proved himself prophetic. He won his second Phoenix Open title on Sunday after a thrilling back nine that included three straight birdies, at Nos. 13-15, and a chip-in eagle at the short par-4 17th.

Tied for lead at 17 under, Koepka hit his drive at the penultimate hole to about 30 yards from the hole. He then hit a perfect pitch that landed on the fringe, took a few hops and then rolled into the middle of the cup.

Koepka’s closing 6-under 65 got him in the clubhouse at 19 under, which ended up being good enough for a one-shot victory.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Brooks Koepka rallied to win his eighth PGA Tour title at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Here's a look at what Koepka and the rest of the players who made the cut at TPC Scottsdale earned in prize money and FedExCup points:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Brooks Koepka chipped in from 32 yards for eagle on the 17th hole to break a tie for the lead and then parred the last for a one-stroke victory Sunday in the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Five strokes behind Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele entering the round, Koepka shot a 6-under 65 to finish at 19-under 265. The four-time major champion also won in 2015 at TPC Scottsdale for the first of his eight PGA Tour titles.

On the 334-yard 17th, Koepka hit a fairway wood 305 yards to the fairway short and left of the green, then holed out to the largest roar of the day from the crowd limited to 5,000 a day – a fraction of the usual size but the most on Tour during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Back at full strength after lingering left knee and hip problems, Koepka rebounded from a bogey on the second with an eagle on the par-5 third and birdied Nos. 13-15.

Schauffele birdied the par-4 18th for a 71 to tie for second with Kyoung-Hoon Lee (68). The fourth-ranked Schauffele tied for second last week at Torrey Pines.

Lee birdied 17 to pull within one of Koepka, but drove right on the par-4 18th and had his 34-foot birdie try slide by on the high side.

Steve Stricker, the 53-year-old U.S. Ryder Cup captain who was trying to become the oldest winner on the PGA Tour, shot a 67 to tie for fourth with Spieth (72) and Carlos Ortiz (64) at 17 under.

Brooks Koepka chipped in for eagle at No. 17 to help capture the Phoenix Open on Sunday at TPC Scottsdale.

Spieth and Schauffele struggled from the start, with Spieth bogeying the first hole after nearly driving into a desert bush. They each had two bogeys on the front nine, with Schauffele making the only birdie between the two on the front side on No. 9.

Schauffele and Spieth each drove into the water on 17 to end their chances, then both birdied 18.

Spieth shot 61 on Saturday for a share of the lead. Winless since the 2017 Open Championship, the 27-year-old Texan is trying recapture the form that carried him to 11 PGA Tour victories – three of them majors – in his first five seasons on the tour.

James Hahn, three strokes ahead in the middle of the round, bogeyed four of the last eight holes for a 69. He finished 10th at 15 under.

DIVOTS: Second-ranked Jon Rahm, No. 3 Justin Thomas and No. 6 Rory McIlroy tied for 13th at 13 under. Rahm, the former Arizona State star, shot a 68, Thomas followed a third-round 64 with a 72, and McIlroy matched Ortiz for the best round of the day with a 64 in his first start in the event.

Super-subs Messi, Trincao inspire Barcelona comeback win

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 07 February 2021 14:40

Lionel Messi came off the bench to inspire Barcelona to a 3-2 win over Real Betis with Francisco Trincao scoring a dramatic late winner.

It took Messi just two minutes to cancel out Borja Iglesias' first-half opener after coming on in the 57th minute. Ten minutes later, he turned provider, linking with Jordi Alba before Victor Ruiz turned it into his own net.

Barca's lead was short-lived, with Ruiz making up for his error at the other end to bring Betis level again, only for Trincao's first goal for the club, a stunning effort from the edge of the box, to steal the points for Ronald Koeman's side in the 87th minute.

Positives

For the second time this week, Barca came from behind to win a game -- they won 5-3 against Granada on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey. No one can accuse this side of lacking fight.

The Blaugrana are now unbeaten in 11 league games, winning their last six, and are seven points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, who do have two games in hand.

For the match-winner, Trincao, this was his first goal for the club, coming in his 27th appearance. He was unlucky not to score against Granada, rattling the bar, but he could not have hoped for a more important goal to open his account.

Negatives

Barca were exposed defensively by Betis, conceding two cheap goals, one from a set-piece, and that remains a concern with Paris Saint-Germain due at Camp Nou in nine days. In further defensive problems, Ronald Araujo went off with a sprained ankle after 11 minutes. With Gerard Pique also out, Barca's options at centre-back are extremely limited.

Meanwhile, the difference between Barca with Messi and without Messi was once again evident -- there's still a certain amount of Messi-dependence.

Manager rating out of 10

7 -- Koeman's decision to make so many changes looked set to backfire before his substitutes saved him. The Dutch coach left Messi, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong on the bench with an eye on Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final first leg against Sevilla.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 7 -- Not at fault for either of the goals and made several smart saves to keep the score level at 2-2.

DF Oscar Mingueza, 6 -- Struggled defensively at first but grew into the game. Didn't add enough in attack, although he did force a save from Joel Robles early in the second half.

DF Ronald Araujo, N/R -- Forced off before the game even got going.

DF Clement Lenglet, 6 -- Given he was playing in a makeshift backline he did OK. No one came out of the second goal Barca conceded looking good.

DF Jordi Alba, 6 -- Roasted for pace by Emerson Royal for Betis' first goal. Up the other end, he came into the game once Messi came on and helped set up the second Barca goal.

MF Sergio Busquets, 6 -- Struggled when the game opened up and gave away the free kick which Ruiz scored from.

MF Miralem Pjanic, 5 -- Looked awkward in front of Busquets and also appeared to be lacking confidence.

MF Riqui Puig, 6 -- Sloppy with the ball early on but did improve before coming off in the second half. Despite that, felt like a missed opportunity on a rare start.

FW Ousmane Dembele, 7 -- Barca's most exciting player in the first half. Always a threat when carrying the ball and taking players on but he missed a great chance in the second half after being freed by Griezmann.

FW Antoine Griezmann, 6 -- Didn't do enough in the first half but like Barca as a team, improved once Messi came on. Fluffed his best chance so must have been relieved to see it end up in the net regardless via Betis defender Ruiz.

FW Martin Braithwaite, 5 -- Asked to play wide left and struggled to have any impact before coming off at half-time.

Substitutes

DF Frenkie de Jong, 6 -- Poorly positioned for the Betis opener but was playing out of position. As expected, was better when he moved into midfield late on.

MF Pedri, 7 -- Defends from the front in a way that few others can. Vital to Barca's second-half performance.

FW Lionel Messi, 8 -- Changed the game instantly, scoring his 13th league goal of the season off the inside of the post. Played a brilliant pass to Alba in the build-up to the second goal.

FW Francisco Trinaco, 7 -- He's waited a long time for his first Barca goal since signing from Braga for €30 million in the summer. It was worth it.

DF Samuel Umtiti, N/R -- Came on for Busquets at 2-2 to add stability to Barca's defence.

Hawks' Hunter (knee) out at least 2 more weeks

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 07 February 2021 14:34

The Atlanta Hawks will be without De'Andre Hunter for at least another two weeks as the forward will undergo a knee procedure Monday.

Hunter will have a lateral meniscus arthroscopic debridement done to help his ailing right knee. The forward has missed the Hawks' past four games since undergoing a nonsurgical procedure on Jan. 30.

Prior to being sidelined, Hunter was second on the team in scoring with 17.2 points per game while also averaging 5.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists.

Hunter, 23, was selected out of Virginia with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 draft.

Sources: Rose traded to NY, reunites with Thibs

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 07 February 2021 14:34

The New York Knicks have reached agreement on a trade to acquire Detroit Pistons guard Derrick Rose and reunite him with coach Tom Thibodeau, sources told ESPN on Sunday.

The Knicks are sending guard Dennis Smith Jr. and a 2021 second-round draft pick via the Charlotte Hornets to Detroit, sources said.

The Knicks and Pistons agreed to the deal on Sunday afternoon after periodic talks that stretched over a couple of months, sources said. The 2021 second-round pick -- acquired by New York in the 2018 deal for Willy Hernangomez -- will likely be in the 40s range of what's projected to be a deep overall draft.

Rose rejoins the Knicks, where he spent a turbulent 2016-17 season struggling in the triangle offense during the Phil Jackson regime. Rose was the youngest MVP in league history under Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls in 2011 and played for him again with Minnesota in the 2017-2018 season.

The Knicks are undergoing a competitive uptick under Thibodeau in his first season as coach, emerging as the No. 6-rated defensive team in the NBA (107.9 points per 100). The arrival of Rose brings help for the NBA's 25th-rated offensive team (scoring 106.9 points per 100 possessions) and creates an overlap of veteran guards, including starter Elfrid Payton and Austin Rivers.

Rivers is likely to become a player whom contenders seek in trade talks as teams look to fortify backcourts closer to the March 25 trade deadline.

The Pistons are moving toward a rebuild and worked to find Rose a destination that had appeal to him. Rose, 32, has averaged 14 points and four assists on 42% shooting this season. He is in the final year of a contract that pays him $7.7 million and will become a free agent in the offseason.

For Detroit, Smith -- the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 draft -- is viewed as a reclamation project similar to forward Josh Jackson, who signed with the Pistons in free agency. Smith, 23, recently volunteered to join the G League bubble in Orlando to find playing time.

ESPN's Tim Bontemps contributed to this report.
