Live Report - India vs England, 1st Test, Chennai, 3rd day

Published in Cricket
Saturday, 06 February 2021 22:09

Welcome to our live report of the third day of the first India-England Test from Chennai. Join us for updates, analysis and colour. You can find our traditional ball-by-ball commentary here

*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local.

11.30am: Lunch - India 59 for 2 (Pujara 20*, Kohli 4*, Archer 2-25)

No doubt that this was England's session. Shubman Gill looked in fine touch throughout his innings of 29 but chipped an on-drive towards mid-on off Archer, where Anderson dived to take an excellent catch to leave India two wickets down before lunch. The spotlight this afternoon will be on Bess and Leach, and whether they can find the rhythm and consistency that will trouble Kohli and Pujara, but Root will play all of his cards, including short bursts from Archer, bouncer barrages from Stokes and Anderson bowling dry.

Stokes was briefly limping in his follow-through immediately before the interval, which is one to keep an eye on. It would be a significant blow to England's hopes for him to aggravate any injury.

11.05am: Funky fields

Joe Root has often displayed his willingness to get creative with bowling plans in the last 12 months or so, and he has set an intriguing field for Stokes' first over. There's no slip in place for Pujara, but there is a leg gully, a short leg, and two midwicket fielders, as Stokes goes round the wicket looking to bang the ball into the pitch and possibly hit some of the rough outside leg stump. For Gill, the leg gully moves out, but there are three men out in the deep on the leg side on the pull.

Root has often used Stokes in this 'enforcer' role, asking him to toil away bowling short. Archer might have one or two more overs left in his first spell before we see spin for the first time in the innings.

10.40am: Archer strikes

England have the early wicket that they would have craved so desperately. Jofra Archer, operating around the 87mph/140kph mark, beat both Gill and Rohit inside his first seven balls with legcutters which moved appreciably away from the bat, and a similar ball accounts for Rohit. Back of a length, in the channel outside off stump, and enough movement away off the seam to take the outside edge of Rohit's back-foot poke on its way through to Buttler.

10.10am: England 578 all out

Anderson lines up a sweep off Ashwin but is bowled, as the final wicket eventually falls. Ashwin bowled a whopping 55.1 overs in all, the most in an innings in his Test career, and finished up with 3 for 146. Bumrah and Ishant's figures were both creditable too, but Nadeem and Sundar's combined figures - 70-6-265-2 - tell the story of the innings. England were able to milk them, picking up boundaries far too often and rotating the strike at will. England will be hoping desperately that Bess and Leach don't suffer the same problems.

9.55am: Where was the new ball?

India take the third new ball after 185.2 overs - 24.2 overs after it was due - and Jasprit Bumrah strikes immediately, trapping Dom Bess lbw with a ball that nipped in appreciably off the seam. The obvious question that follows is: what took them so long? The old ball was reversing at times, and perhaps they were worried about the ball coming onto the bat, but neither Bess nor Leach is particularly attacking by the standards of tailenders.

9.15am: England bat on

Just in case you thought you might be tuning into India's first innings shortly, Ben Stokes rubbished that idea overnight. "No thoughts of a declaration tonight," he said. "That would be stupid after winning the toss. In India you get as many runs as you can. If we can bat an hour tomorrow, we'll be happy." As a result, Dom Bess and Jack Leach will resume their partnership shortly.

Mayers-Bonner century stand keeps West Indies in the hunt

Published in Cricket
Saturday, 06 February 2021 22:10

Lunch West Indies 259 and 197 for 3 (Mayers 91*, Bonner 43*, Miraz 3-82) need another 198 runs to beat Bangladesh 430 and 223 for 8 dec (Haque 115, Das 69, Warrican 3-57, Cornwall 3-81)

Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner, the two debutants, kept West Indies' hopes of pulling off a miracle alive on the fifth morning of the first Test.

Resuming the day on 110 for 3, Mayers and Bonner extended their stand to 138 and took the side to 197 for 3 at lunch, 198 short of the target. At the interval, Mayers was nine short of his maiden Test hundred, while Bonner was keeping him company on 43.

The two displayed outstanding temperament and trusted their contrasting gameplans. Mayers continued in the attacking vein, hitting 11 fours and a six to strike 59.47. Bonner frustrated the bowlers with his defence, moving along at a more patient strike rate of 29.45. The comparisons were already being made to Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant's knocks in India's win against Australia in Brisbane last month.

The Bangladesh spinners, on the other hand, were guilty of not bowling enough full-length deliveries. That allowed Bonner and Mayers to wait on the back foot and adjust to whatever turn and bounce the pitch offered. And if there was any width provided, the duo didn't hesitate to deploy the cut shot.

But it wasn't as if Bangladesh didn't create any opportunities. In the first hour of the day alone there were at least three chances that should have been converted into wickets. Mayers was on 47 when Taijul Islam got one to straighten from around the wicket to hit the batsman on the pads. There was a loud appeal for lbw but Richard Illingworth deemed it not out. Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque didn't opt for the review but replays showed Mayers would have been out had they done so.

Shortly afterwards, Mehidy Hasan Miraz induced an outside edge off Mayers bat but this time Najmul Hossain Shanto put it down at first slip. The resulting single took Mayers to his maiden Test fifty.

Bangladesh missed another opportunity to overturn an on-field decision when Nayeem Hasan got one to turn sharply from outside off and ping Bonner's pads. Illingworth once again ruled it in the batsman's favour. Replays, once again, confirmed he was wrong.

When Mustafizur Rahman was brought into the attack, Mayers welcomed him with a four and six off successive deliveries. Bonner, meanwhile, was happy to keep his end occupied. But when Hasan dropped short, he didn't hesitate in swatting the offspinner to the square-leg boundary twice in one over.

Needless to say, Bangladesh missed the control and guile of Shakib Al Hasan, who hasn't taken any part in the Test after walking off with a thigh injury on day two.

Rodgers wins MVP; Donald DPOY over T.J. Watt

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 06 February 2021 22:03

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers became just the sixth player to be named the NFL's Most Valuable Player at least three times, taking the award as a runaway winner at Saturday's NFL Honors show.

Rodgers, who accepted the MVP award virtually, received 44 of the 50 votes conducted by a nationwide panel of the media. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen received four votes, and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes earned two votes.

Rodgers also won for the 2011 and 2014 seasons.

"It's an honor to win this award for the third time," Rodgers said in a prepared video acceptance speech. "2020 was definitely a crazy year filled with lots of change, growth, some amazing memorable moments, 180 straight days of having my nose hairs scraped, playing for very little fans or no [fans] the entire season. I got engaged, and I played some of the best football of my career. "

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry and Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald were named the NFL's offensive and defensive players of the year.

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and Washington defensive end Chase Young were honored as the NFL's top rookies.

While guiding the Packers to a 13-3 record, Rodgers became the third player in NFL history to lead the league in passing touchdowns (48) while throwing the fewest interceptions (five), according to Elias Sports Bureau research, joining Tom Brady in 2010 and Johnny Unitas in 1958. Rodgers set a career high with an 84.4 Total QBR, the third-highest mark in a single season since ESPN began using the metric 15 years ago.

He joined Brett Favre, Jim Brown, Brady and Unitas as three-time winners -- all second most behind Peyton Manning's five MVPs.

And it all started for Rodgers with an old film clip and one throw in training camp that signaled he was back on track.

The throw was to Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a route Rodgers called a "read-stop," something they had been working on virtually all offseason as a key part of Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur's offense that never got going in his first season at the helm, 2019.

"That, to me, gave me a lot of confidence that the things I was thinking about and working on and visualizing could come to fruition," Rodgers said in December, when he first revealed one of his secrets to this season. "Now you never know once the live bullets start going how you're going to play, but I think as far as training camp goes, that was an important day for me. And a lot of things changed for me as far as my balance, my rhythm, my timing going forward."

Rodgers also made reference to the film clip from the team's Super Bowl season 10 years ago; but it wasn't until after this season's NFC Championship Game loss to the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers that he finally revealed what he saw.

"The key that I saw was just the rhythm in my hitch," Rodgers said last month during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show." "I was realizing the thing that I was working on back then so much was the sinking into the hitch at the top of my drop. And that was one area that I think that was lacking based on my injury and some of the adjustments I had to make fundamentally to deal with a knee and a leg that just wasn't as strong as it used to be.

"And that's part of the reason why I really got back into squatting, was 'cause I wanted to build that thing up so I could put a ton of weight and pressure into that knee and those legs, because the deeper I was sinking into my hitches, the more on time I was throwing the ball. And I really just saw how much of an emphasis I was doing that in 2010, 2009, 2011, and what that was allowing me to do was I was throwing the ball on time, and all these games I was watching, my timing was very, very good."

Henry won his award with 32 out of the 50 votes, easily eclipsing Rodgers and Mahomes, who each got five votes.

Donald received 27 votes, edging out the Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt, who picked up 20 votes.

Henry turned in the NFL's fifth-highest single-season rushing total with 2,027 yards. He also rushed for 17 touchdowns, becoming the sixth player in NFL history to lead the league outright in rushing yards and touchdowns in back-to-back seasons.

Henry is just the fourth running back to win offensive player of the year since 2010 and the first since Todd Gurley in 2017.

Donald won defensive player of the year for the third time in four years, also taking home the award following the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He joined Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt as the only players to earn the honor three times since it was first presented in 1971.

Donald led all players with 54 pressures this season, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. He also led the league for the third straight season in pass rush win rate as an interior defensive lineman (24.2%), despite being double-teamed on 65.7% of his pass rushes (third-highest rate in league).

Herbert and Young both were clear winners in the rookie voting. Herbert got 41 votes, while Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson was runner-up for the offensive award with nine votes. Young received 42.5 votes, and Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn was second on defense with 4.5.

Herbert was the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft and threw for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns -- a single-season rookie record -- in 15 games.

"Thank you to the Chargers organization, the Spanos Family, Tom Telesco and coach Anthony Lynn for taking a chance on a kid from Eugene, Oregon," Herbert said in a recorded video message. "Without them, none of this is possible. While it's an incredible honor just to be in the conversation for this award, I know it's not possible without my teammates."

Young was the second overall pick in the draft and posted 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, something only 2003 defensive rookie of the year Terrell Suggs has done as a rookie over the past 20 seasons.

"It definitely wasn't the rookie season I expected, just with the pandemic and everything going on," Young said.

Also on Saturday, Kevin Stefanski, who led the Cleveland Browns to their first winning season since 2007, first playoff appearance since 2002 and first postseason win since 1994, won coach of the year.

Stefanski received 25 of 50 votes. Buffalo's Sean McDermott (7) finished second, and the Miami Dolphins' Brian Flores (6) was third.

Washington quarterback Alex Smith, who suffered a broken fibula and tibia followed by 17 surgeries because of infections that nearly cost him his right leg, was named comeback player of the year.

Smith nearly swept the voting, receiving 49 votes, while Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger got one vote.

Smith went 5-1 as a starter this season to help Washington make the playoffs.

"Two years ago, I was sitting in a wheelchair wondering, 'Had the life I had known changed forever?'" Smith said in a recorded acceptance speech. "Anger, pity, self-doubt, why me? These were feelings I had at certain points throughout my career, but this time, it wasn't about football. It was bigger. It was about me being a father to play with my children, a husband to go on walks with my wife and, despite my new limitations, me getting my life back.

"My goal was football, not because I actually thought it was a reality, but because I knew my life would be better because of it. ... It took 728 days, 728 days of small victories and major setbacks, of countless hours of physical therapy and just as many sleepless nights."

Previewing Chiefs vs. Buccaneers

When: Sunday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. ET
Where: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, Florida
Television: CBS (and ESPN Deportes)
Depth charts: Chiefs | Buccaneers

Most of the pregame hype has focused on the two quarterbacks, and given their track records, you can understand why. When these two teams met in Week 12, Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady combined to throw for 807 yards and six touchdowns. Each team's star wide receiver had a multi-touchdown game, as Tampa Bay's Mike Evans scored twice late after Kansas City's Tyreek Hill racked up an unreal 269 receiving yards and three touchdowns on the way to a 27-24 Chiefs win.

It's tough to imagine this rematch turning into a defensive battle. At the same time, as I've thought more and more about this game, I've been focused more on the defensive coordinators. Tampa Bay's Todd Bowles and Kansas City's Steve Spagnuolo are two of the most creative, fertile minds in the business, and they've had two weeks to piece together creative game plans. More than anything, I've thought about how Bowles might try to accomplish what has seemingly been impossible. How on earth do you try to stop the Chiefs? -- Bill Barnwell, senior NFL writer

  • FPI predicts a Chiefs victory in 52.1% of its simulations by an average of 0.7 points.

  • Our matchup rating grades Chiefs-Buccaneers as a 98.7 on a scale of 1 to 100. It is the second-highest Super Bowl matchup rating since 2009 behind the Seahawks-Broncos matchup in 2014 (99.6). It is also the highest-rated matchup of the 2020 season, narrowly beating out the previous Chiefs-Bucs matchup in Week 12 (98.1).

  • The Chiefs were No. 1 in FPI this season, while the Buccaneers were No. 3. Both teams were also in the top five in overall efficiency rating.

  • In the preseason, the Chiefs had a 36.2% chance to make the Super Bowl per FPI, but the Buccaneers were looking at an 8.9% chance.

Key stats to know

Team stats: Chiefs | Buccaneers

  • The Buccaneers will be the first team to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium. It will be the team's second Super Bowl appearance, and it will mark the fifth time since 2000 that a wild card has made it. Each of the previous four teams went on to win. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are in their fourth ever appearance and are trying to become the first repeat champion since the 2003-04 Patriots.

  • The Chiefs (303.4) and Bucs (289.1) finished 1-2 in passing yards per game during the regular season. Per Elias Sports Bureau research, this will be the first Super Bowl ever to feature the top two passing offenses in the NFL.

  • Kansas City generated pressure on 35.8% of opponent passing plays this season, second best in the NFL, and Brady ranked 27th in QBR under pressure (10.6). Per ESPN metrics/NFL Next Gen Stats, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones had the second-best pass rush win rate as an interior rusher this season (20.3%), trailing only Aaron Donald. On the other side of the ball, Mahomes leads the NFL in QBR when pressured (75.6), but Tampa Bay's Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaquil Barrett both rank top-five in pass rush win rate among edge rushers this postseason.

  • During the regular season, the Buccaneers ran the ball by design 34% of the time, which ranked 26th in the NFL. They finished tied for 28th in rushing offense (94.9 yards per game). According to Elias, only one Super Bowl-winning team has averaged fewer than 95 rushing yards per game during the regular season (2011 Giants).

  • The Chiefs have allowed touchdowns on 76.6% of red zone possessions, worse than any other team in the league and the worst mark by a Super Bowl team in the past 20 years. Only five other Super Bowl defenses had a red zone efficiency at or above 60%, and their collective Super Bowl records were 0-5. Tampa Bay's Evans has nine red zone touchdown catches this season (including playoffs).

  • Tampa Bay's defense has produced seven takeaways this postseason. Cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting can join Rodney Harrison and Aeneas Williams as the only players to record an interception in four consecutive playoff games if he hauls one in on Sunday.

  • Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (418) and Buccaneers wideout Chris Godwin (398) are first and second in receiving yards when put in motion or shifted, and they are tied for the most TDs on such plays (four).

Bold predictions

Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu will have a pair of interceptions. He played more at safety than slot corner over the second half of the season, and he has five interceptions in his past seven games, including one against Brady and the Bucs in Week 12. -- Adam Teicher, Chiefs reporter

Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski will catch his 13th career playoff touchdown pass from Brady, breaking a tie with Joe Montana and Jerry Rice for the most touchdowns for a duo in postseason history. Gronk hasn't caught a touchdown pass from Brady since December, but with two weeks of prep time and so much experience between the two -- plus Gronk's 106-yard performance against the Chiefs in Week 12 -- it has to happen. -- Jenna Laine, Buccaneers reporter

Brady will score four touchdowns en route to winning his fifth Super Bowl MVP. Brady has accounted for four-plus scores in five games already this season but has done so in only three career playoff games (most recently in 2011). The Chiefs, meanwhile, allowed 36 touchdowns to quarterbacks during the regular season (sixth most). The Bucs have scored at least three offensive TDs in 10 consecutive games, and with Brady at the controls, they're a decent bet to do it again Sunday. -- Mike Clay, NFL analyst

Ninkovich: Mahomes has a long way to go to surpass Brady

Rob Ninkovich isn't ready to put Patrick Mahomes in the GOAT conversation with Tom Brady.

The quarterback matchup

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

If Mahomes wins, he will be the first quarterback ever to have two championships and an MVP award at 25 years old. (He'd join Emmitt Smith as the only players to do this in NFL history.) He dazzled again this season, throwing for 4,740 yards, 38 touchdowns and six interceptions en route to an 82.9 Total QBR. Excelling on off-schedule throws and slinging the deep ball, Mahomes doesn't have many weaknesses. And more bad news for the Bucs: He has won 12 straight road/neutral-site games and is 3-1 over the past three postseasons when trailing by 10 or more points. Even an early two-score lead for Tampa might not be enough to stop Mahomes.

Tom Brady, Buccaneers

Brady is playing in his 10th Super Bowl, which means he'll have started in 48% of the Super Bowls played since he came into the NFL in 2000. Seeking his seventh title, the 43-year-old will be making his third Super Bowl start since turning 40 -- no other QB has started even one at 40 or older. Brady has 33 career postseason wins, more than 28 active franchises, and has led six game-winning drives in the Super Bowl over his career, per Elias. This season, his first away from New England, he tallied 4,633 passing yards, 40 touchdown throws, 12 interceptions and a 72.6 Total QBR. His 13 TDs on throws at least 20 yards downfield are his most in a season since throwing 13 in his 2007 MVP campaign.

Who wins Super Bowl MVP?

Dan Graziano, national NFL writer: Brady. I think the Chiefs' offensive line issues show up just enough to make a difference in this game, which I still expect to be high scoring. The Bucs' offense is operating at a high level right now, and Brady will make enough plays down the field to win his seventh Super Bowl title.

Mina Kimes, NFL analyst: Mahomes. Yes, he is fortunate to play with arguably the best combination of head coach, No. 1 wide receiver and tight end in the NFL -- but he is also playing behind a ramshackle offensive line that will be facing a fearsome Bucs pass rush. He's going to have to make some dazzling plays on the run to pull off the win.

Jason Reid, The Undefeated writer: Mahomes. While sharing the game's biggest stage with the greatest quarterback in NFL history, Mahomes will shut the door on one era and add a big accomplishment to his own.

Seth Wickersham, NFL writer: Pierre-Paul. Bowles' strength as a defensive coach is attacking the opponent's offensive line, and the Chiefs are thin there. JPP will have a monster game.

Field Yates, NFL analyst: Mahomes. The Bucs are going to be able to hang offensively with Kansas City, which means Mahomes needs to be at his best. And while he won the Super Bowl MVP award last year, his performance wasn't eye-popping, and I expect a stronger showing this Sunday.

  • Of the 108 experts who weighed in, 61 picked Mahomes to win Super Bowl MVP. See all of our experts' picks.

  • Mahomes is the betting favorite at -120 at Caesars Sportsbook by William Hill. Brady is 9-5, while Hill and Kelce at 9-1.

Inside the game plan

I'm keeping my eye on how Buccaneers edge rushers Pierre-Paul and Barrett match up with the Chiefs' offensive line. With the expectation that the Bucs will play more split-safety coverages on Sunday night to limit the deep-ball ability of Hill, our focus should be on the Tampa Bay defensive line. Look for Bowles to scheme isolation matchups with his front four, creating edge one-on-ones for Pierre-Paul and Barrett versus that depleted Chiefs offensive line. The idea here is to squeeze the pocket and pressure Mahomes while playing disciplined zone coverage on the back end. -- Matt Bowen, NFL analyst

Buccaneers X factor: Devin White, LB

White recorded the second-highest pass rush win rate among off-ball linebackers this season (36%), behind only Deion Jones. But in coverage, there are questions. In the regular season, White allowed the third-most expected points added as the nearest defender to the target of all linebackers, per NFL Next Gen Stats. -- Seth Walder, analytics writer

Chiefs X factor: Andrew Wylie, OL

He's expected to shift over to right tackle with Mike Remmers moving to the left side following Eric Fisher's injury. And Wylie draws a crucial matchup on the outside, squaring off against Barrett, who ranked 10th in pass rush win rate at edge this season and has played more on that side of the line since the Bucs' bye week. Wylie ranked 16th among guards in pass block win rate, but it's a different game outside, especially against a high-end pass rusher. -- Walder

Total passing yards for Mahomes: Over/under 315.5
Total passing yards for Brady: Over/under 295.5
Total sacks by both teams: Over/under 4
Total touchdowns in the game: Over/under 6.5

Favorites have covered in two straight Super Bowls and in three of the past four big games. In Super Bowl history, favorites are 27-25-2 straight up. And in each of the past 11 seasons, the winner has also covered the spread. Mahomes is 27-13-1 against the spread when he is not a double-digit favorite, but Brady is 41-17-1 against the spread as an underdog in his career, both best in the Super Bowl era.

Looking at the over/under, the past two Super Bowls fell short of the total, but it's 10-10 over the past 20 games. All time, it's also split at 26-26-1 (there was no total in Super Bowl I). -- David Bearman, ESPN Chalk

Who is in, and who is out?

Injury reports: Chiefs | Buccaneers

Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins is optimistic that he will be able to play for the first time since Week 16 because of a calf injury, though he began the practice week on Wednesday as a limited participant. Running back Le'Veon Bell's sore knee makes his availability in doubt, though he has slipped down the depth chart and doesn't figure to get a big workload even if he plays. -- Teicher

Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (ankle), receiver Antonio Brown (knee), safety Jordan Whitehead (shoulder) and linebacker Lavonte David (hamstring) have been practicing this week, but on a limited basis. With Winfield and Brown, the issue is monitoring swelling, while with Whitehead, it's more about the use of his arm. David suffered his injury in the third quarter against the Packers and played through it, so there seems to be less concern about him. -- Laine

The coaches

Andy Reid, Chiefs

Reid ranks fifth on the all-time wins list for head coaches, but he's the only one in the top five without multiple championships. Sunday will mark his third Super Bowl appearance as a head coach (1-1). The Chiefs have averaged 27.2 points per game since he took over in 2013, the best mark in the AFC and second only to the Saints (28.0) in the NFL over that time.

Bruce Arians, Buccaneers

Per Elias, Arians will be the second-oldest head coach to reach the Super Bowl (behind Marv Levy). It's his second year as the coach of the Buccaneers after coming out of retirement in 2019. He has two Super Bowl titles as an assistant but has never won the big game as a head coach.

Is Brady vs. Mahomes the greatest SB QB matchup of all time?

Mike Greenberg, Ryan Clark and Domonique Foxworth break down whether Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes is the best Super Bowl matchup of all time.

How the Chiefs, Bucs got here

The Chiefs entered the 2020 season hot off a Super Bowl win and continued that momentum right out of the gate, winning 34-20 over Houston on opening night. They had to survive an overtime scare with the Chargers in Week 2 but moved swiftly to 4-0 to start the season. In mid-October, the Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season, giving up 40 points to the Raiders. Kansas City rattled off 10 straight wins from there before sitting starters in a Week 17 loss, having already wrapped up the AFC West and the No. 1 seed in the conference. The 14-2 Chiefs held off the Browns in the divisional round of the playoffs after Mahomes left the game, and then dismissed the Bills in the conference championship behind 172 receiving yards from Hill.

The Bucs' season began in the loss column, but they'd quickly right the ship after the Week 1 loss to the Saints and win seven of their next eight. A midseason stumble included a blowout by New Orleans (38-3), a close defeat to the Rams and that Week 12 loss to the Chiefs. But the Week 13 bye served its purpose, and the Buccaneers closed the season with four wins to lock up the No. 5 seed in the NFC and an 11-5 record. In the playoffs, Brady led Tampa Bay past Washington with 381 passing yards, then outdueled Drew Brees in the divisional round. And though Brady threw three interceptions against the Packers in the conference championship game, Tampa Bay won and reached the Super Bowl.

The Week 12 matchup: The Chiefs beat the Bucs earlier this season 27-24. This will be the 14th Super Bowl in which the teams also met in the regular season. The regular-season winner won seven of the previous 13 instances. In Week 12, Hill had 13 receptions for 269 yards and 3 TDs. The two teams combined for 807 passing yards, but neither reached 100 rushing yards.

What to know about the officiating

Referee Carl Cheffers will be working his second Super Bowl in five seasons, with an all-star crew that includes the first woman -- down judge Sarah Thomas -- to work the game. Cheffers' regular-season crew averaged an NFL-high 16 flags per game in 2020, a notable position given the leaguewide drop in penalties. He and his crew will take the field amid extreme scrutiny of the NFL officiating department following the championship round. (There were only six flags thrown in the NFC Championship Game, while the NFL's replay department reviewed and reversed an unreviewable play in the AFC Championship Game.) -- Kevin Seifert, national NFL writer

COVID-19 protocols in place

How is the NFL approaching the game?

The NFL has mandated that Chiefs and Buccaneers players must be tested twice daily for COVID-19 leading up to the Super Bowl. Any player who tests positive for the coronavirus will be ruled out for the game. But if a player is placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list and hasn't tested positive -- deemed a high-risk/close contact, as was the case with Demarcus Robinson and Daniel Kilgore of the Chiefs -- they have a chance to play if they continue to test negative. Both teams are working overtime to get to the season's finish line, with the Chiefs implementing a facility- and home-only policy. -- Jeremy Fowler, national NFL writer

Will there be fans?

The NFL announced updated plans this week to have 25,000 fans at Raymond James Stadium, where the normal capacity is 65,000. Of that total, 7,500 will be made up of vaccinated health workers who have received free tickets from the league. Most will be from the Tampa Bay area, but each of the league's 32 teams received an allotment for local awards. All fans will be required to wear masks, sit in pods that leave extra seats between unaffiliated parties and follow other COVID-19 protocols. -- Seifert

Curry's 57 points not enough as Luka, Mavs roll

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 06 February 2021 21:09

Stephen Curry scored 57 points but it wasn't enough to overcome a 42-point, 11-assist performance from Luka Doncic as the Golden State Warriors lost to the Dallas Mavericks 134-132 Saturday night.

Curry finished 19-for-31 from the field and 11-for-19 from beyond the arc in 37 minutes. Doncic went 12-for-23 from the field and 7-for-12 from deep in 38 minutes.

Curry, who two weeks ago passed Reggie Miller for second on the all-time 3-pointers-made list, continues piling up shooting numbers. Saturday's performance was the 40th time in Curry's 12-year career that he had at least 40 points in a game and the eighth time he had at least 50 points in a game. It also was the 16th time that Curry made 10 or more 3s in a game.

Curry dominated throughout, pouring in 30 points in the first half while hitting shots from all over the floor. After knocking down a 3-pointer while standing near the Mavericks' logo, Curry broke out his famous shimmy, a celebratory move that has stamped some of the biggest moments in his career.

Curry added five assists, two rebounds and two steals on a night when the Mavericks repeatedly threw extra defenders his way to try and slow his momentum.

"Every time he shot the ball, I thought it was going in," Doncic said in a postgame interview with ESPN.

Curry's outburst comes just over a month after he set a career-high with 62 points in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Jan. 3.

"Sublime," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of Curry's performance: "It was ridiculous the shots he was hitting. The degree of difficulty. The ease with which he made them. He's never played better. We're talking about a two-time MVP, three-time champion, I've never seen him like this. He just looks so strong to me. He's always obviously been an incredible shooter but he looks stronger to me, just getting by people, fending them off on drives to the rim, finishing. And of course the shot-making is almost unfathomable what he's doing out there."

Jackets' Werenski (lower-body injury) goes on IR

Published in Hockey
Saturday, 06 February 2021 17:55

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets have lost one of their most valuable defensemen with Zach Werenski being placed on injured reserve Saturday.

The 23-year-old All Star suffered an unspecified lower-body injury Thursday in the Blue Jackets' win over Dallas and is expected to miss at least a week. Werenski limped off the ice and headed for the locker room late in the game.

Paired with Seth Jones on the top defensive line, Werenski has a goal and three assists in 12 games.

Columbus recalled forward Liam Foudy from the taxi squad to take Werenski's spot on the roster. The Blue Jackets open a back-to-back with Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

Source: Former coach Tom Flores elected to HOF

Former Raiders and Seattle Seahawks coach Tom Flores has been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2021, a source told ESPN's Paul Gutierrez.

Flores was the lone finalist in the coach category for the Class of 2021.

Flores won Super Bowl rings as a player, assistant coach and head coach to go with an AFL championship as a player.

Flores and Hall of Famer Mike Ditka are the only people in NFL history who have been Super Bowl winners as players, assistant coaches and head coaches. His nine seasons as the Raiders' coach included two Super Bowl victories, an 8-3 postseason record and a .727 playoff winning percentage, which ranks behind only Vince Lombardi.

The full Class of 2021, which will be unveiled Saturday night on CBS, was chosen Jan. 19 by the Hall's board of selectors during a virtual meeting. The new Hall of Famers will be enshrined during a multiday event Aug. 5-9 in Canton, Ohio. The extended enshrinement weekend will also include ceremonies for the Hall's Class of 2020, as well as the Centennial class of Hall of Famers selected as part of the league's 100th anniversary. Both were canceled last year because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The Hall's Class of 2020 includes Steve Atwater, Isaac Bruce, Steve Hutchinson, Edgerrin James and Troy Polamalu. The Centennial class includes Harold Carmichael, Jim Covert, Bill Cowher, Bobby Dillon, Cliff Harris, Winston Hill, Jimmy Johnson, Alex Karras, Steve Sabol, Donnie Shell, Duke Slater, Mac Speedie, Ed Sprinkle, Paul Tagliabue and George Young.

Andy Murray has spoken of his anger at missing next week's Australian Open because he caught Covid-19, pointing the finger at the culture inside the National Tennis Centre over Christmas.

Murray, 33, believes he contracted the virus while practising at the LTA's high performance centre in London.

The Scot says "tonnes of people were in the gym" and thinks too many were allowed to use the player facilities.

The LTA said "stringent and appropriate restrictions" had been applied.

As a result of catching coronavirus, Murray was not allowed to travel to Melbourne on a chartered flight as planned and was then unable to find a "workable quarantine" to play at the Grand Slam after recovering.

Instead the former world number one will play in Italy next week on the ATP Challenger Tour.

"When we went to the NTC in April, if there are six indoor courts, you could only practise on one, three and five. There wasn't any testing at that time, but the gym was closed and it was restricted access," said Murray.

"Whereas after Christmas you have an indoor venue where they are using all six courts, there were tonnes of people in the gym, and it was just totally different.

"Now it's kind of back to what it was in April, which is good. It's a completely different building. All the communal areas are severely restricted, like the lunch hall; there's probably seven or eight seats maximum in there now, before there would have been 30 to 40.

"But the reality is that it happened too late because there were quite a number of cases between Christmas, New Year and the players going off to Australia."

Others have privately expressed reservations about the numbers allowed into the player lounge, and the lack of social distancing and mask wearing by some.

British number one Dan Evans trained at the NTC before flying to the Australian Open and suggested attitudes there to the virus had "slackened".

"I was pretty nervous the last few days because we knew the virus was there. But I got out unscathed," he said.

"If I was being a bit harsh, without being rude to some players in there, they probably shouldn't have been in there. I don't think they were really of much importance.

"The importance should have been on getting healthy people to the Australian Open and there were probably people in there who weren't preparing for tournaments. Just because there wasn't stuff on, they were maybe using the centre just to practise, to get out."

In response, the LTA pointed out the impossibility of eradicating all risk with the virus so widespread and said it was impossible to "police every part of the building continuously".

"We have consistently applied the stringent and appropriate restrictions, testing and other protocols for elite training centres in line with government guidance," the LTA said in a statement.

"We have worked closely with Public Health England in order to keep the centre open since April for both training and as a host venue for over 1000 competitive matches across 17 tournaments on site.

"Our protocols are regularly communicated to everyone using the venue and we expect them to be adhered to in the player lounge and all other areas of the building."

The first sign of sickness Murray had was when he developed a slightly dry throat a few days before his flight to Melbourne.

What started as a joke among his team became more serious when he woke up at 3am the following morning with an aching body and sore head.

"Three hours later I had the message through on my phone that I had tested positive," he recalled.

"For two days, I was pretty ill. I basically stayed in my room for five or six days, because I didn't want my family to get it, if possible.

"But then five to six days later my wife tested positive, then a few days after that the kids tested positive, so the whole family got it in the end."

With Murray and his family now fully recovered, he has travelled to the Italian city of Biella where he will play in the Challenger tournament. The top seed faces Germany's Maximilian Marterer on Monday.

Head coach Eddie Jones says England's first home loss to Scotland since 1983 will haunt his side.

The hosts were beaten 11-6 in their opening game of the Six Nations, with Scotland wing Duhan van der Merwe scoring the only try of the game at Twickenham on Saturday.

"You never atone for a game like this. This stays with you for a long time," Jones said.

The coach added he would "take responsibility" for the defeat.

"I didn't prepare the team well enough," Jones told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"We just had one of those days. We don't have many, but we had a bad day today."

Defending champions England conceded 11 penalties, compared with Scotland's four, in a lacklustre performance.

Jones said the visitors "played tough, edged the set-piece and won in the air".

"We just could not get in the game. We were not at the races today," said the 61-year-old Australian.

"I thought we fought back into the game well. With the possession and territory they had, we hung in the game and had a chance to win at the end, which is a great credit to our players considering we were off the pace."

England host Italy in their next game on 13 February (14:15 GMT) and Jones says his side "will do everything we can" to get their first win of the 2021 tournament.

He added: "If you look at the world at the moment, we are just grateful we can play rugby. We will just suck it up.

"We have Italy next and we will be ready for the next Test match. We will do everything we can."

'Outplayed' - social reaction

Princess Anne, a regular at Murrayfield, was watching from the sofa rather then the best seats.

Brian Moore, part of the England team that famously lost to Scotland at Murrayfield in 1990, was magnanimous in defeat.

Ireland's Simon Zebo, a team-mate of Scotland fly-half Finn Russell at Racing 92, said it with flowers.

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend says his side have the chance do to something special after blowing the Six Nations wide open with a first win at Twickenham since 1983.

A try from Duhan van der Merwe and six points from the boot of Finn Russell earned the Scots a shock victory against defending champions England.

Scotland face Wales at Murrayfield next week.

"I'm very proud of the performance," Townsend told BBC Radio 5 live.

"And there's a lot more to come from players. Someone showed me a stat the other day that we've only won three of our first 20 Six Nations games.

"That gives us an opportunity to do more than we have in the past."

England were the favourites to win the crown again, but struggled to get a foothold in the match.

Scotland dominated possession and territory and might have added to their score.

After Wales at Murrayfield, Townsend's side face France in Paris before hosting Ireland and Italy.

"Home games don't really count now, as much as they did in the past," Townsend added.

"We've got three home games which could've been a good season for us, now we've got to work hard at home. We can build on today's performance and be better.

"It's definitely a monkey off our backs," Townsend added of ending the long wait for a win in London.

"We had one win last year in Wales when we hadn't won there for a while. Now to get the Twickenham monkey off our back, we'll grow in confidence."

'One of the best performances ever' - analysis

Scotland hooker Fraser Brown on BBC Radio Scotland

We were saying all the way through the second half that they needed to get more on the scoreboard and make the pressure count. But they didn't have to because their defence was outstanding.

So much work has gone into these guys in defence over the last year. And to find that bit of extra spark from the autumn and to be able to dig in and win this type of game - I'm so pleased. What a win.

Former Scotland scrum-half Andy Nicol on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was one of the best performances we have ever put in, creativity, physicality, good kicking and an intensity and togetherness, and fully deserved.

That is as dominant a performance from Scotland against England for over 30 years. Outstanding, an unbelievably good 80-minute performance.
