Moore Tops Opening Night At New Smyrna World Series

Published in Racing
Friday, 05 February 2021 18:30

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Ryan Moore knows how to win at New Smyrna Speedway and on Friday evening during the opening night of the 55th World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing, he reminded everyone he is still a force to be reckoned with.

Moore, the 2013 World Series Super Late Model champion, started from the pole and held off a late challenge from fast qualifier Jett Noland to win the opening 35-lap David Rogers Super Late Model feature of the World Series.

While the stat book will show Moore lead most of the 35-lap event at the half-mile asphalt oval, the reality is he had his work cut out for him. A stacked field of 25 cars started the feature and Moore first had to contend with a challenge from Jake Finch, the son of former NASCAR Cup Series team owner James Finch, during the initial start.

A quick caution with two laps complete stacked the field back up, but Finch spun in front of the field as everyone raced towards turn one. The resulting crash eliminated several contenders, including Finch, Dan Fredrickson and five-time USAC Silver Crown champion Kody Swanson.

Moore held serve at the front of the field during two more quick restarts, fending off a brief challenge from 2019 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series National champion Jacob Goede before sailing off into the lead.

Noland was able to chase down and pass Goede for second halfway through the race and was closing in on Moore before the final caution waved with two laps left for a car spun in turn one. However, the restart went Moore’s way and he was able to pull away to his sixth career World Series super late model triumph.

“We’ve been down here a long time and we’ve been good, we’ve been bad, we’ve been all over the board,” said Moore. “We built a new car. There is nothing wrong with our old one by any means, just ready for a new challenge, and we got with Rowdy (Manufacturing) and built this car.

“Just a stellar performance. My best friend Jamie, him and I, we pour our heart and soul into these things. It’s good to get him a win,” Moore continued. “We’re going to be a force to be reckoned with this week.”

Noland fended off a challenge from defending World Series Super Late Model champion Derek Griffith to finish second. Goede and Connor Mosack followed them home in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Moore’s father, 1995 ARCA Menards Series East champion Kelly Moore, was also in the field Friday. He finished 11th.

Noland didn’t leave New Smyrna Speedway empty handed on Friday as he was able to win the first Pro Late Model feature of the week after an intense battle with Swanson that saw Noland take the lead for the first time with two laps left.

The finish:

Ryan Moore, Jett Noland, Derek Griffith, Jacob Goede, Connor Mosack, Justin Mondeik, Brad May, Sammy Smith, Jake Garcia, R.J. Braun, Kelly Moore, Kris Wright, Michael Hinde, Nick Panitzke, Jade Cretacci, Doug Elliott, Mike Stacy, Daniel Dye, Jesse Love, Patrick Thomas, Ruben Rovelo, Jake Finch, Dan Fredrickson, Kody Swanson, Bubba Pollard.

Xander Schauffele rarely doesn’t say what’s on his mind.

“I want to win really bad,” he fired off Friday evening at TPC Scottsdale, where Schauffele holds a one-shot lead through 36 holes of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

It’s certainly been a while since Schauffele has found himself in the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour. Not that he hasn’t come close. Since his last victory, at the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions, Schauffele has finished runner-up seven times. Heck, since the beginning of last season, he’s only placed outside of the top 25 twice in 24 starts with his last non-top-25 coming last summer at Harbour Town.

Schauffele doesn’t need to be reminded – even if some, including him, would argue he won “low gross” last season at East Lake. He knows. He also believes he knows why.

“We kind of just realized where I was getting to I think in terms of me just becoming impatient,” he explained. “I feel like I had a sense of urgency when I really didn't need to. I would look back at the week and I was like, ‘Man, why did I kind of jump the gun there? All I had to do was play decent and I would've been right there.’ I think it's just a result of pushing and pushing and pushing and having decent results, but not what we really want. I've played well in a calm sort of state of mind, and that's when I've done my best.”

Case in point: After an opening 66 Thursday, Schauffele got off to a slow start in Round 2 as he “saw everyone's name flying up the leaderboard.” Then he reminded himself: Keep your head down. After one birdie in his first 11 holes, Schauffele played his final seven holes in 6 under.

The back-nine 30 included birdies at Nos. 12 (from 25 feet), 13, 14 and 18 (after hitting his approach from the left fairway bunker to 5 feet). Schauffele also canned a 21-footer for eagle at the par-5 15th.

“Pretty happy with the result,” Schauffele said afterward, “and obviously what I thought would work did work today.”

But will it work this weekend? Schauffele, who is one clear of Steve Stricker and Keegan Bradley, is sure going to try.

“I'm going to wake up tomorrow and someone is going to be four shots ahead of me or something like that,” Schauffele said. “I think this is one of those golf courses where no lead is very safe, and you need to really, like I said, keep my head down and stay calm.”

Chiefs' Britt Reid in car crash that injures 2 kids

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 05 February 2021 17:50

Britt Reid, the son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and the team's outside linebackers coach, was involved in a multicar accident Thursday night that has left a 5-year-old child with life-threatening injuries, according to a team statement and the police report.

Reid, who was scheduled to leave with the Chiefs on Saturday for Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is now not expected to travel to Tampa, Florida, a source told ESPN.

Reid is in the hospital with undisclosed injuries and could be there for days, a source told ESPN's Dianna Russini.

According to an incident report provided by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department (KCPD), a car ran out of gas on an on-ramp to Interstate 435 in Kansas City on Thursday night. After the driver called relatives for help, a second car arrived, also parking on the on-ramp.

According to the police report, a third car, which Kansas City television station KSHB says was driven by Britt Reid, then came along and struck first the left front of the disabled vehicle and then the rear of the second vehicle, where the 5-year-old child was in the back seat along with a 4-year-old child, who also was taken by ambulance to an area hospital but with non-life-threatening injuries.

The station said Reid acknowledged to police that he was driving the third car, according to a search warrant. The police report said the driver of the third car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was being investigated for possible impairment.

According to the search warrant obtained by KSHB, a KCPD officer said Reid's eyes were bloodshot and the officer smelled "a moderate odor of alcoholic beverages." The warrant went on to say Reid told the officer that he had had two to three drinks and that he also took prescription Adderall.

"The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid," the Chiefs said in a statement Friday. "We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved."

The KCPD told Russini if there are charges in this case, they will not be filed until after the Super Bowl -- sometime next week as part of its normal investigative timeline.

No one involved in the multicar accident is identified by name in the police report.

The driver of the disabled vehicle was inside the car at the time of the first collision but was not injured, the police report said, and the driver of the second vehicle and a front-seat adult passenger also were not injured.

Reid has had legal problems in the past.

In 2007, he pleaded guilty to flashing a gun at another motorist and was sentenced that November to eight to 23 months in prison.

The following year, he pleaded guilty to DUI and drug charges after he drove into a shopping cart in a parking lot after he had difficulty locating his vehicle while leaving a store.

Reid, 35, joined the Chiefs in 2013 as a defensive assistant coach. He became assistant defensive line coach in 2015 and defensive line coach in 2016. He became the outside linebackers coach in 2019.

Clips' George out vs. Celtics with swelling in foot

LOS ANGELES -- LA Clippers guard Paul George was ruled out for Friday's game against the Boston Celtics with swelling in a toe on his right foot.

George was added to the injury report on Friday afternoon. Clippers coach Ty Lue said he didn't know how George suffered the injury or how long he could be out.

"We're going to miss him," Lue said. "Wish him a speedy recovery as we try to figure out [more about the injury]. ... I'm not really sure when he started feeling it. I'm just hoping we get him back soon."

The Celtics will be without Jaylen Brown, who was ruled out earlier Friday with left knee soreness.

George was coming off one of his best games of the season, draining 8 of 9 3-pointers and scoring 36 points in a win over Cleveland on Wednesday.

Durant pulled again due to protocols after playing

Published in Basketball
Friday, 05 February 2021 18:36

In a bizarre back and forth, Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant's night culminated with him being unexpectedly pulled from Friday's game against the Toronto Raptors in the third quarter due to health and safety protocols.

Durant's departure was at the direction of the league, sources told ESPN's Malika Andrews.

The NBA and Nets are still conferring, but it is unlikely Durant will travel with the team to Philadelphia for Saturday's game, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Durant was initially not available to start Friday's game due to the NBA's health and safety protocols, the team announced shortly before tipoff. Durant had come into contact with someone thought to have been exposed to the coronavirus, but after that person underwent further testing, Durant was made available to play, sources told ESPN.

At the 4:13 mark of the first quarter, Durant checked into the game, marking the first time in his 13-year career he'd come off the bench. But midway through the third quarter, the Nets were given word Durant needed to be removed.

As he sat on a bench during a break, Durant was informed by a Nets staffer he was being pulled from the game. A visibly stunned Durant shook his head and as he walked through the tunnel to the locker room tossed a water bottle in frustration.

Durant finished with just 8 points on 3-of-8 shooting in 19 minutes, plus 6 rebounds and 5 assists. It marks only the second time in the last 10 seasons Durant failed to reach double-figures, breaking a streak of 166 straight games. Durant scored zero Feb. 28, 2017, against the Wizards, leaving the game 90 seconds in after an injury to his knee.

Moments before he was pulled from Friday's game, Durant was whistled for his fifth foul, but the Nets won a challenge to overturn the call on the floor. It's the first time in Durant's career he finished a game with more fouls than field goals.

Durant, who had COVID-19 last March, is the second-leading scorer in the NBA, averaging 30.8 points per game. He previously missed three games in early January due to the health and safety protocols.

Ozuna to stick with Braves for 4 years, $64M

Published in Baseball
Friday, 05 February 2021 18:36

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves are bringing back Marcell Ozuna, signing the slugger to a $64 million, four-year contract.

The Braves announced the deal for the 2020 NL home run and RBI leader on Friday night, less than two weeks before pitchers and catchers are set to report for spring training. The contract includes a fifth-year club option for $16 million that would take it to $80 million with a $1 million buyout, which would yield Ozuna $65 million in guaranteed money.

Ozuna took a gamble on himself after the 2019 season, turning down a $17.8 million qualifying offer from the St. Louis Cardinals, and signed a one-year, $18 million deal with the Braves in late January. The move paid off handsomely, as the slugger finished sixth in the National League MVP voting after leading the league with 18 home runs, 56 RBIs and 145 total bases. He was third in the NL with a career-best .338 batting average and .636 slugging percentage.

The bet? The $17.8 million qualifying offer by the Cardinals would've represented 41% of his career earnings to that point.

While considered somewhat of a defensive liability after suffering a shoulder injury in 2018, Ozuna, who turned 30 in November, did see some action in left field for the Braves while playing all 60 games during the pandemic-shortened season. However, most of his at-bats for Atlanta came as the team's designated hitter, slotted after MVP Freddie Freeman in the lineup as the Braves won the NL East title after putting up some of the best offensive numbers in team history.

Before joining the Braves, Ozuna spent two seasons with the Cardinals, protecting Paul Goldschmidt in the lineup as they made it back to the playoffs in 2019. Over the past five seasons, including the 60-game season in 2020, Ozuna has hit 130 home runs, making two All-Star Games on the strength of his bat.

Since the start of the 2017 season, Ozuna has 357 RBIs, second only to the Rockies' Nolan Arenado (384) and just ahead of Freeman (343) among National League players, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

In eight MLB seasons, he has a .276 batting average with 166 home runs, 594 RBIs and 505 runs scored for the Marlins, Cardinals and Braves.

Malaika Mihambo leaps world lead in Berlin

Germany’s world long jump champion and USA’s Christina Clemons among winners at ISTAF Indoor meeting

Malaika Mihambo and Christina Clemons set world leading marks at the ISTAF Indoor meeting in Berlin on Friday (February 5), with Mihambo leaping 6.77m in the long jump and Clemons clocking 7.83 in the 60m hurdles.

As it turned out, just one jump would have been enough to secure victory for Mihambo, as Germany’s world long jump champion produced her best mark in the first round. She followed it with jumps of 6.62m and 6.61m before three fouls for a second consecutive win after her 6.74m to finish top in Düsseldorf at the end of last month.

World silver medallist Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk was second with her jump of 6.64m from the fifth round.

Over on the track, Clemons ran 7.90 in the first hurdles event and then returned 80 minutes later to improve to 7.83, with European champion Nadine Visser second in 7.90.

“A world lead is exactly what I have been training for,” said Clemons.”I could have been a little more aggressive in the middle of the race but I was able to recover and ran a really good time.

“I want to make this my best indoor season so far.”

The world indoor silver medallist is next set to race in Liévin on February 9 and added: “My coach and I are striving for the world record!”

It took a photo finish to decide the second of the men’s races, as both Aaron Mallett and Orlando Ortega clocked 7.64 with Mallett getting the nod.

The 60m races saw Arthur Cissé improve his Ivory Coast record to 6.53 to win ahead of Lamont Marcell Jacobs with a PB of 6.55 and Maja Mihalinec Zidar win the women’s race in 7.23 from Lisa Mayer with 7.26.

Ernest John Obiena was another national record-breaker as he improved his own Philippines indoor pole vault best to 5.80m, which he achieved on his first attempt.

He claimed the win on countback ahead of Germany’s Torben Blech, while Oleg Zernikel finished third thanks to his 5.72m clearance.

There had been drama for Robert Sobera earlier in the competition, with the 2016 European champion’s pole snapping as he attempted 5.72m after soaring over 5.62m first time.

He went on to try 5.80m but finished fourth when his three attempts were not successful.

“At 5.72m I had an accident, my pole broke,” he explained. “I do not know why, it was a brand new pole. I had never touched it before.”

Results can be found here.

Over in Nehvizdy, British champion Reynold Banigo won the long jump with a leap of 7.73m, while Tomáš Staněk topped the shot put with 21.22m from his final throw.

Thomas Carmoy won the men’s high jump on countback ahead of Gianmarco Tamberi as both cleared 2.24m, while the women’s competition was won by Levern Spencer with a 1.86m clearance.

Luke James' late try helped Sale pull off a win at Premiership leaders Bristol that lifted them up to second.

Sharks held their nerve in a dogged encounter, with the lead changing hands four times at Ashton Gate.

Bristol had gone ahead through hooker Bryan Byrne's first-half try before three penalties from AJ MacGinty edged Sale into a 9-7 lead at half-time.

Ioan Lloyd's boot put Bears 13-12 ahead with seven minutes to go but full-back James crossed soon after to win it.

There was still time for MacGinty to slot over his fifth penalty of the evening, which secured Alex Sanderson back-to-back victories in his first two matches as Sale director of rugby.

The result also halted Bristol's run of six successive Premiership wins and reduced their lead to three points. The hosts failed to replicate the dominant display that saw them beat Bath seven days earlier.

They were unable to build on Byrne's early try even against 14 men, after Sale had back-row Jono Ross sin-binned for taking out Nathan Hughes in the air at a line-out.

Referee Luke Pearce disallowed their attempts to add a second try on the stroke of half-time as he ruled the Sale defence held the ball up from another driving maul.

Sharks then limited the hosts to just two penalties from fly-half Lloyd in the second half, before keeping their composure from the restart to set up the winning try.

First MacGinty showed vision with a neat cross-kick towards Simon Hammersley on the right wing. His clever footballing skills enabled Sale to keep the ball alive and force an advantage, before MacGinty kept his composure a couple of phases later to pick out James in the right corner for the try.

Bristol were also hit before the game with news of an injury setback for Fiji centre Semi Radradra, who looks set to be out for up to 10 weeks with a knee problem.

Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam told BBC Radio Bristol:

"It's always a tough game against Sale, because they play a certain way that relies upon physicality, breakdown, defence and they look for penalties.

"We talked about it all week and said the only way we'd lose the game was from silly mistakes and giving away penalties - and that's what happened.

"When you play a team like Sale you have to be so accurate. There were some good moments but certainly to get ourselves ahead and then lose it is disappointing."

Sale director of rugby Alex Sanderson told BT Sport:

"It was a bit touch-and-go throughout that game, credit to Bristol they really make you fight for it.

"On another day, they could've won, but we gutsed it out and ground it out.

"What I'm most pleased with is that we stayed in the moment, we remained calm even though we went behind late on. We focused on the next task to try and set up that try to get us over the line."

Bristol Bears: C Piutau; Naulago, O'Conor, S Piutau (co-capt), Purdy; Lloyd, Uren; Woolmore, Byrne, Afoa (co-capt), Attwood, Holmes, Vui, D Thomas, Hughes.

Replacements: Capon, Y Thomas, Chaparro, Harding, Heenan, Kessell, Bedlow, Leiua.

Sale Sharks: L James; McGuigan, S James, Hill, Yarde; MacGinty, De Klerk; Rodd, Langdon, John, Beaumont, Wiese, Ross (capt), Neild, J-L du Preez.

Replacements: Ashman, Harrison, Oosthuizen, Phillips, Dugdale, Cliff, R du Preez, Hammersley.

Same Team, New Number For Joe Graf Jr.

Published in Racing
Friday, 05 February 2021 13:41

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Joe Graf Jr. will return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series this season with SS GreenLight Racing aboard the No. 07 Chevrolet Camaro beginning with the season-opener on Feb. 13 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Bucked Up Energy will serve as the primary marketing partner for Graf’s fourth Xfinity Series race at Daytona.

Graf returns with the Bobby Dotter-owned team on the heels of a productive rookie season where he earned several top-15 and numerous top-20 finishes.

“I can’t wait for the NASCAR Xfinity season to start,” said Graf. “2020 was a surreal learning experience.

“Racing so many tracks for the first time without getting any practice due to Covid-19 was tough. However, I believe conquering those challenges last season will allow us to have a more productive and competitive sophomore season.

“Bobby (Dotter, team owner) and the SS Greenlight Racing team have been working hard to prepare cars for the upcoming season. I can’t wait to get to Daytona.”

The COVID-19 pandemic certainly presented its challenges to the NASCAR industry in 2020 and affected rookies exceptionally hard. For much of the Xfinity’s 33-race schedule, Graf battled at race tracks he had never turned a lap on.

Persevering through it all, the team made substantial gains from February to November and has taken additional steps during the offseason with the intention of contending for a position in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs this year.

“We have had a super busy off-season,” added Graf. “We are happy to share that we will be bringing in several new partners to NASCAR and the Xfinity Series throughout the season. We have also focused on enhancing our team and equipment, so we have a shot to make the Playoffs.

“I have been fortunate enough to surround myself with some NASCAR veterans who have helped me get in the best shape of my life and offer me critical advice on racecraft. Again, this season we have set our bar high for on-track performance and I believe our focus will pay off.”

Team owner Bobby Dotter echoes his driver’s sentiments.

“I am really excited to have Joe back after the progress he showed towards the end of last season,” added Dotter. “Having been to the tracks now should really help Joe continue to show what we can do as a team and cannot wait to get the 2021 season underway.”

Graf jumped on the opportunity to change his car number to No. 07. The former ARCA Menards Series winner has a long history with the No. 07. It was his first car number when he raced Bandoleros at Bethel (N.Y.) Motor Speedway in 2009 and it also was the car number his father, Joe Graf Sr., raced for many years.

Additionally, Graf and SS GreenLight Racing welcome new crew chief Mike Tyska who will lead the No. 07 SS GreenLight Racing team this season.

“I am really excited about having Mike as a crew chief,” said Graf. “Mike is a knowledgeable and disciplined guy. He is a really smart guy who knows what it takes to move our program forward. Racing is the ultimate team sport, and we needed a guy like Mike who could fit seamlessly with our team.

“Most importantly he is a great fit with our core group of guys who have been the backbone of SS GreenLight racing for years. His experience at Germain Racing, GMS Racing and Rick Ware Racing has really prepared him for this opportunity to lead as crew chief.”

Tyska, a native of New York has experience in all three of NASCAR’s national divisions and was a part of Todd Bodine’s 2006 championship season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Longtime industry veteran and New York native, Robin Pemberton will be joining SS Greenlight Racing as a consultant this season. Pemberton brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from his time as NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition to his 17 years as a crew chief for drivers such as NASCAR Hall of Famers Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin, as well as Kyle Petty.

“I have been so fortunate that Mr. Pemberton gave me some guidance last year,” Graf said. “His advice on how to approach tracks for the first time and how to stay mentally tough has been invaluable. To have him join SS GreenLight in a more formal role is amazing.”

Armor All Joins RPM & Jones For Daytona 500

WELCOME, N.C. — Richard Petty Motorsports officials announced Friday that Armor All will serve as the primary sponsor of the No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE driven by Erik Jones during the Daytona 500 at Daytona Int’l Speedway on Feb. 14.

Armor All, an Energizer Holdings Inc. brand, will be returning to NASCAR for the first time since 2010, and reigniting its history in the sport by partnering with Richard Petty Motorsports.

Some of the highlights of the brand’s involvement at the Daytona International Speedway includes a fifth-place finish with Neil Bonnett in the 1976 Daytona 500. In the 2008 NASCAR Xfinity Series season-opener, Armor All collected their first victory for the brand with Tony Stewart.

“We are proud to showcase the Armor All brand on racing’s biggest stage,” Katina Wall, category leader, Americas Auto Care, Energizer Holdings, said. “Our sister brand, STP, has won four Daytona 500s on the iconic No. 43. We are looking forward to Armor All getting its first one with Erik Jones and Richard Petty Motorsports.”

The 24-year-old Byron, Michigan, native has eight starts in the NASCAR Cup Series at the 2.5-mile tri- oval in Daytona Beach, Fla. Jones posted a victory at the Daytona Int’l Speedway on July 7, 2018, and has collected two top-five finishes and three top-10 finishes, recording 36 laps led.

In addition, Jones has six starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and one start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at the Daytona Int’l Speedway.

“It is cool to have the Armor All brand on our No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE,” Jones said. “I am excited to work with them. I grew up using the Armor All brand of products on a lot of the stuff that we worked on and cleaned. I continue to use them today.”

“The Armor All brand paint scheme looks great. I have seen our No. 43 Armor All Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at the Richard Petty Motorsports shop. I think the orange and black is going to stand out during the Daytona 500 and hopefully we can get them to victory lane.”

A longtime partner of Richard Petty, the STP brand will celebrate 50 years of a storied partnership with the start of the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series season. Together, STP and Petty have collected 64 victories, including four in the DAYTONA 500. Continuing to partner with Richard Petty Motorsports, STP, joins Jones at the Great American Race by debuting a special 50th anniversary logo commemorating the partnership.

In addition, STP will serve as an No. 43 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE for the entirety of the NASCAR Cup Series season with Richard Petty Motorsports.
