Liverpool Champions League game in doubt

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 30 January 2021 08:26

Liverpool are facing a Champions League headache after the German government banned all flights from the U.K. until Feb. 17 to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Germany.

The Premier League champions are set to face RB Leipzig in Germany on Feb. 16 but may now need to find an alternative solution.

Playing the game at a neutral venue is one possibility open to the sides, or swapping the venues for the first and second leg.

That would mean Leipzig travelling to Liverpool for the first-leg on Feb. 16 and Jurgen Klopp's side playing in Germany on March 10.

Leipzig would be able to travel to Anfield and back for the first leg as German passport holders and residents are allowed to travel to Germany where they'd be tested straight away.

The ban has been put in place by the German government to contain the spread of the new variant of the coronavirus from high-risk countries.

COVID-19 has already forced the postponement of several Premier League fixtures this season. However, those came about because of outbreaks at clubs rather than travel bans.

German football has largely been unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2020-21 campaign. Although several high-profile players have tested positive, no Bundesliga matches have been postponed so far.

Bayern Munich fines Tolisso for getting tattoo

Bayern Munich fined France midfielder Corentin Tolisso an unspecified amount and dropped him from Saturday's Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim after the World Cup winner broke the league's health measures by getting a tattoo.

- Stream Bundesliga on ESPN+

The 26-year-old had briefly posted on social media a video of him getting a tattoo, that angered club officials.

"We are happy that despite the current situation Bundesliga matches can be played. A condition for that is that players, coaches and staff stick to the health rules set out," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement.

"Corentin Tolisso has now broken these rules despite the fact that the club leadership has clearly communicated those rules with the team. This is frustrating and will not be tolerated."

Chicago Stock Car Ace Don Waldvogel, 91

Published in Racing
Saturday, 30 January 2021 06:30

DWIGHT, Ill. — Former Chicago area stock car champion Don Waldvogel passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at the age of 91.

Racing out of Lockport, Ill., Waldvogel was a two-time late model champion on the clay at Chicagoland’s Santa Fe Speedway, winning the crowns in 1958 and again in 1969.  Wheeling the Seth Piper-prepared 1969 Chevelle No. 51 in 1969, Waldvogel had scored eight feature wins by the end of August, including two 50 lappers on the speedway’s half-mile dirt oval in May and June.

Waldvogel won two 100-lap main events at Santa Fe in 1962 behind the wheel of his Chevy No. 51. Waldvogel’s biggest Santa Fe win was the National Clay Track Championship 200 in 1965. He drove the Rich Ponkauskas Chevelle to the win on Santa Fe half-mile on Sunday evening, Sept. 5.

“Five guys went together and bought that ’64 or ’65 Malibu from (Raceway Park champion) Bill Cornwall) and put a 409 (engine) in it,” said Waldvogel about his Santa Fe 200 win. “I finished second to Bill Van Allen on Saturday and then won the ‘200’ on Sunday. That paid for the car.”

Waldvogel’s last big win at Santa Fe came in 1974 when he won the Stars and Stripes 50 lapper.

Waldvogel was a four-time track champion at Illinois’ Kankakee Fairgrounds Speedway, winning the titles in 1954, ’55, ’57 and ’67. He was instrumental in bringing racing back to the Kankakee dirt oval in 1967 after an absence of some 10 years because of a disagreement between management and drivers. He won a career total of 34 stock car feature races at Kankakee.

A farmer by trade, Waldvogel’s racing career dated back to 1951 at Indiana’s Schererville Speedway – later known as Illiana Motor Speedway.  The rookie racer had put together a 1939 Ford and numbered it 57.  Someone else had the number and a piece of tape changed it to 51 – which would become Waldvogel’s signature number.

“For a couple of years, I wanted to drive a race car,” reminisced Waldvogel this past October.  “Bud Koehler was my idol.  My Dad and I use to go to Raceway Park in Blue Island and watch Koehler in the stock cars.

“My biggest thrill in racing was when I slid myself into the seat of Bud Koehler’s car for a 50 lapper at Santa Fe. They wouldn’t let Koehler race because he was from Raceway Park.  By 25 (laps), I went from the back row to the front.”

In 1952, Waldvogel won two stock car heat races at Raceway Park.

“I came within a couple 100s (of a second) from setting a new track record (during qualifying) and won the fast heat,” remembered Waldvogel about his visit to the paved Raceway Park. “The engine was a ‘full house’ flathead Ford just like Andy Granatelli had.  My Ford had no fenders and they griped about that.  The promoter told me never to come back with this car.”

In 1996, Waldvogel finally returned to Raceway Park and won two Dwarf Car heat races and a trophy dash.

Waldvogel won several Dwarf Car championships as his career rolled toward the 21st century. Racing through 2001, Waldvogel enjoyed a lot of success in the State of Iowa.

Records show Waldvogel making one United States Auto Club stock car start, finishing 10th at Illiana in the Tony Bettenhausen Memorial 100 in October of 1963, driving Jack Watts’ 1963 Ford.

Still farming last year and chasing coyotes off of his fields, Waldvogel could be seen sometimes in the grandstands at local tracks, watching the races at Kankakee or at the Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Ill.

Waldvogel, known as the “Flying Dutchman” to his fans, was inducted into the Illinois Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2012 – being part of the inaugural class.

Chapecoense seal title with last-minute Panenka

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 30 January 2021 06:23

Brazilian side Chapecoense sealed the second division Serie B title on goal difference on Friday after a last gasp Panenka-style penalty from Anselmo Ramon gave them a 3-1 win over Confianca.

Chapecoense, who lost most of their squad in an air crash in 2016, secured promotion earlier this month after spending a year in the second tier when they were guaranteed a top-four finish with four games remaining.

- Borden: Chapecoense's eternal champions

The club were second going into the final matchday behind America-MG who beat Avai 2-1 to finish with 73 points and a positive goal difference of 20.

Chapecoense were leading 2-1 in stoppage time, enough for second place with an identical goal difference but fewer goals scored, when they won a penalty and Ramon stepped up to lob the ball into the net.

Though the game ended with Chapecoense's Denner Fernando Melz and Confianca goal scorer Isnairo Reis Silva Morais being sent off, it did little to dampen their spirits.

"By merit, by right, with a lot of fight, Chapecoense are champions of Brazilian Serie B," the club wrote on Twitter.

"Rain in the Arena Conda at the moment when Chapecoense prepares to lift the trophy. Our strength comes from above."

Alan Ruschel, who was one of the survivors of the 2016 crash, lifted the trophy amid emotional scenes.

The team also held an open top bus parade in the small southern city of Chapeco as fans poured into the streets to celebrate their victory.

Although their budget is a fraction of Brazil's big city clubs, Chapecoense's hastily rebuilt side remained competitive in the top flight until they were relegated in December 2019.

Diallo scores first Man United goal in U23 clash

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 30 January 2021 06:23

Manchester United winger Amad Diallo scored on his first appearance for the club during an under-23 game against Liverpool.

Diallo robbed a Liverpool defender of possession in the Premier League 2 fixture at Kirkby, before running through on goal to score.

Joe Hugill doubled United's lead before Liverpool fought back to 2-2 at half-time. However, Hugill scored three more times in the second-half as United restored their two-goal advantage to lead 4-2.

The 18-year-old joined United from Atalanta earlier this month, signing a contract until June 2025.

Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed but sources told ESPN that United agreed to pay a base fee of €21 million with €20m in add-ons.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)

"As a club, we have followed Amad for a number of years and having watched him myself, I believe he is one of the most exciting young prospects in the game," United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.

"It will take time for him to adapt but his speed, vision and fantastic dribbling ability will stand him in good stead to make the transition.

"He's a player with all of the raw attributes that are needed to be an important player for Manchester United in the years to come."

James Vince said he hoped Andrew Tye "didn't mean it" when he bowled the bouncer which was called wide and denied Vince the chance to go for a century at the end of the Qualifier final in Canberra.

In what became a slightly farcical conclusion to the match, Daniel Hughes either blocked or left the final three deliveries off the 17th over from Jhye Richardson after hitting a boundary that left just two needed for victory with Vince at the non-striker's end on 98.

Tye then delivered the first ball of the 18th over, a loopy bouncer which sailed high and wide down the leg side leaving umpire Paul Wilson no choice but to call wide. Tye quickly appeared to signal an apology but for a few seconds various players stared off at each other before what seemed a few frosty end-of-match handshakes.

When asked what Tye said, Vince told Fox Cricket: "Not a lot…don't want to point fingers. It almost hit him on the toes, it was pretty short. I hope he didn't mean it anyway."

Speaking to fellow broadcaster Channel Seven, the Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner insisted it had been an accident. "I assure you AJ [Tye] plays the game in the right spirit and it was unintentional," he said.

Vince did concede that he could have left himself a better chance of the hundred if he had not taken a single off Richardson having thumped a boundary straight down the ground to reach 97.

"It would have been nice to get a hundred, it was only really when Hughesy blocked out a couple that I started thinking about it," he said. "In hindsight I took one off Richo [Richardson] to cover which I probably shouldn't have taken. Just focused on getting the job done, would have been a bit of icing on the cake but in the end just happy to be there at the end and get the guys home."

Turner, meanwhile, admitted he had made a mistake by batting first after the dew came down at Manuka Oval and made bowling and fielding second very tough. He termed this match, and the final group game against the Brisbane Heat, which the Scorchers lost to miss out on hosting rights for the Qualifier, as "missed opportunities" although was looking forward to the home Challenger final on Thursday in Perth against the winner of Sunday's knockout.

"I got that one wrong for sure," he said. "In 14 games so far we haven't had any dew have an impact in the game, and behind me, the outfield is saturated at the moment. Don't want to sound like I'm making excuses but it's a bit of a reality, I'll cop that on the chin and got that wrong one."

The Scorchers also face action being taken against Mitchell Marsh for his outburst when given out caught down the leg side as the lack of DRS in the competition again became a talking point.

The BCCI doesn't feel the need to look at a back-up overseas venue for hosting the 2021 edition of the IPL, treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal said on Saturday. Dhumal, who is also on the IPL Governing Council, told PTI that the board is confident that it would be able to host the league at home unlike the previous edition, which was held in the UAE due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We are working on having the IPL in India and we are hopeful that we would be able to organise it. We are not even thinking of a back up at this point in time, we want to do it here. India is probably safer than UAE at this point. Hopefully, the situation remains stable and keep improving and we will have it here," said Dhumal.

The UAE is currently experiencing a spike in Covid-19 cases while there has been a decline in India. The seven-day average caseload in the UAE has inched towards 4000, up from 770 when the IPL 2020 began on September 19. India's seven-day average was past 90,000 at the time, but is now under 14,000.

After the boards of both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during last year's IPL, the UAE was considered a back-up option to host this season too, alongside being an option for the India-England series that begins in Chennai next week.

The BCCI recently scrapped the Ranji Trophy from this season's cricket for the first time in the tournament's history, deciding instead to close the truncated season off with the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and 50-overs competitions for women and U-19 cricketers.

"We took feedback from the players, selection committee, state associations. It was felt that 2020 is already gone and rather than having two Ranji events in the same calendar year, it is better to go for white-ball cricket. That way, we could have something for junior cricket and women considering the importance of of Women's World Cup and U-19 World Cup next year. Rather than having one tournament, we thought of having events in different categories," said Dhumal, adding that players will be duly compensated for not getting to play the Ranji Trophy this season.

The resumption of domestic cricket happened with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, with the final to be played in Ahmedabad on Sunday. With domestic cricket also being played in bio-secure bubbles, Dhumal said it is tough on the organisers as well as players, but that's the requirement until the cricketers are vaccinated.

"It is tough but at least this way we are getting to play. We are working on getting our players vaccinated. The government's directive is that frontline workers and the most vulnerable will be the first to get vaccinated, but we are in touch with the government to get our players vaccinated."

On the possibility of having crowds for the upcoming India-England contest, the first international series in the country amid the pandemic, he said: "We are reviewing the situation on a regular basis. We want the roar to be back in the stadiums but we have to work in tandem with the state and cental government. We are very keen to have the crowds back. Surely, it won't be 100 percent capacity given the challenges, but we are looking at anywhere between 25-50 percent."

However, the first two Tests of the England series will be played behind closed doors.

The BCCI had approached its counterparts in Sri Lanka and South Africa for a bilateral series next month to resume international cricket for the women's team but Dhumal claimed the pandemic situations in those countries were not viable. The women last played an international event in March 2020.

"We are keen that women's cricket flourishes. We were wanting to conduct some bilateral series but it fizzled out because the Covid situation is not safe in those countries. At the first available opportunity, we will conduct it."

Who will stop LeBron from winning MVP No. 5?

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 30 January 2021 06:07

The NBA season is nearly a quarter complete and the contenders for the league's top awards are coming into focus.

Will LeBron James be able to add a fifth MVP award to his trophy room? Or, can a center win the MVP for the first time in over two decades? Does the league's most impressive rookie thus far reside in Sacramento, California? Which coaching performance has stood out this season?

Our experts answer the big questions and make their bold predictions about the NBA awards races.

More: Lowe's 10 things, including the Pelicans' tricky timetable

1. What are you watching most closely in the MVP race?

Bobby Marks: How much separation LeBron James gets from the rest of the pack. James is the early leader for MVP by a wide margin, shooting 50% from the field and a career-high 41% from 3, while averaging 25.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.5 assists. The only question is if James can sustain that pace after having two months of rest in the offseason.

Chris Herring: Nikola Jokic's case -- a near triple-double average despite Jamal Murray being banged up and Michael Porter Jr. being out of the lineup -- is being vastly underplayed. A big part of that was Denver's record, which was below .500 as recently as last week. But if the Nuggets finish near or above the Lakers, and if Philadelphia's strength of schedule knocks Joel Embiid and the Sixers down a peg, the Joker's case becomes harder to deny.

Royce Young: How much LeBron wants to win it. Because if it's something he really wants, it's his. There are other strong candidates, but the Los Angeles Lakers haven't had a title hangover and James appears as motivated as ever. While LeBron doesn't have to win MVP every season to be considered the league's best player, he's on track to do both this season.

Kevin Arnovitz: Whether the big guys maintain their standing near the top of the heap. Centers are an endangered species in the present-day NBA, where it's entirely normal not to see one on the floor during the closing moments of crucial games. A center hasn't won the MVP since the Clinton administration, but Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid are assembling strong résumés in the early season. Jokic's box score numbers are particularly gaudy and Embiid has the Sixers atop the East standings. If Jokic can keep piling up those totals and Embiid can stay healthy for the season, our MVP ballots could read big this spring.

Tim MacMahon: Can another superstar make a strong enough case to earn votes over LeBron James? There is no debate that James is the league's best player, as he reminded us with his dominance in the bubble en route to his fourth ring. We can discuss the semantics of best player vs. best regular season in MVP voting, but James' status atop the league's throne should at least be a tiebreaker.

2. Which rookie has impressed you the most thus far?

MacMahon: LaMelo Ball leads rookies in rebounds, assists and flash. He's one of only seven players in the league with at least 100 boards and 100 dimes. You can nitpick the 19-year-old's shooting percentage and defense -- just like with most high-minute rookies -- but he's the most impactful and exciting player in his class.

Marks: James Wiseman. There was uncertainty in how Wiseman would adjust to the NBA, especially after not playing in a game in 13 months. While he is still a work in progress, the center has averaged 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds this season. What is most important is that Wiseman put up his most efficient game of the season coming off the bench, scoring 25 points in a win against Minnesota. Instead of seeing it as a demotion, Wiseman has embraced his new role and accepted constructive criticism.

Herring: Tyrese Haliburton. He has been efficient, shooting almost 49% from the field and 46% from deep. He has shown he's not intimidated by the moment, hitting three of the four triples he has taken in clutch situations. He made a key play on defense to seal a Kings victory over the Knicks recently as well. LaMelo certainly looks the part, but so does Haliburton -- just more efficiently.

Young: Ball. The flash is easy on the eye, but there's substance and style. Ball was seen by some as the most talented player in the draft, and he came in with the most attention. He has produced, becoming the youngest player to ever register a triple-double, and has shown the potential that makes him so intriguing.

Arnovitz: Haliburton looks like the portrait of the modern shooting guard, and he has already solidified his place as the steal of the draft. He has shown range, command in the pick-and-roll (1.16 points per chance), passing ability and instincts as an off-ball defender playing the gaps. Haliburton not only checks the boxes, but with a feathery floater and stage presence, he's a blast to watch. The Kings have had a rough go of it for the past ... how many years has it been? But they've scored big with Haliburton.

3. Who is one dark-horse candidate to watch?

Arnovitz: It's easy to forget that Paul George finished third in the MVP balloting less than two years ago. Twenty-four points per game might clear the threshold for a legitimate MVP candidate, but George has a decent shot at a 50-40-90 season for a team that could win more than 70% of its games. If he can get fat on nights when Kawhi Leonard sits, and ramp up the individual defense, he could be squarely in the conversation.

MacMahon: Does Kevin Durant fit this category? I'll argue that anyone returning from a ruptured Achilles tendon absolutely qualifies as a sleeper when it comes to the MVP conversation. But there's no denying that Durant belongs, especially if Brooklyn finishes with one of the East's top seeds. He's a threat to win his fifth scoring title and has a career-best true shooting percentage (.648).

Marks: Patty Mills and the race for Sixth Man of the Year. The Spurs guard has quietly put together his strongest season since entering the NBA in 2009. In 25.7 minutes coming off the bench, Mills is averaging 14.3 points, 47% from the field and 41% from 3. He has scored in double figures in all but four games this season.

Herring: If Cleveland keeps winning enough? Coach J.B. Bickerstaff. The team posted two of the three worst defenses in NBA history over the past two seasons, yet it now ranks inside the top 10. No one will be surprised if that number slides -- just like the Cavs' 9-9 record likely will -- but after a 19-46 campaign with largely the same cast, it's been impressive to watch this club make a jump with Kevin Love hurt.

Young: Domantas Sabonis getting into the MVP conversation. His numbers should grab your attention -- 20/12/6 on excellent efficiency -- but it's what he's doing to push the Pacers. They traded Victor Oladipo, and the primary player they got in return, Caris LeVert, is out after surgery to remove a cancerous mass from a kidney. But behind the combo of Sabonis and Malcolm Brogdon, the Pacers are still good. If they finish as a surprise No. 3 seed in the East, Sabonis should get some real MVP consideration.

Lakers-Celtics: Historic rivalry revitalized

Take a look at the history of the Lakers-Celtics rivalry through the years.

4. Besides MVP and Rookie of the Year, which awards race do you find most intriguing?

Young: Most Improved Player is the most ambiguous of all the awards, with the definition fluctuating on what makes a player the most improved versus one who just naturally developed to his expected potential. But this group of candidates is interesting -- Jaylen Brown, Collin Sexton, Jerami Grant, Christian Wood and Julius Randle. It's a wide range of backgrounds and a diverse style of players.

Arnovitz: It's not sexy, but Defensive Player of the Year can produce some solid sports-bar debate. You've got the intimidating rim protectors like Rudy Gobert and Joel Embiid, the pogo stick all-purpose terrors like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis, and the spidery stoppers like Kawhi Leonard and Ben Simmons, as well as on-ball pests like Marcus Smart. Since traditional defensive stats often don't tell the story, the award is ultimately an eye test.

MacMahon: I'll go with Coach of the Year and mention two deserving candidates. Quin Snyder -- recognized by his peers as one of the best X's-and-O's minds in the business -- has the Utah Jazz playing beautiful, selfless basketball on both ends of the floor, resulting in the NBA's best record. J.B. Bickerstaff has done a phenomenal job developing young talent and made a rebuilding team much more competitive than expected in Cleveland, which was 14-40 when he took over last season and is 14-15 since.

Marks: The race for Most Improved Player. We have talked at length about the strong starts of Christian Wood and Chris Boucher, but the All-Star play of Malcolm Brogdon has received little attention. The former Rookie of the Year is averaging a career-best 22.8 points (up from 16.5) and ranks No. 13 in real plus-minus among point guards. Last year, Brogdon ranked No. 27.

Herring: Most Improved Player, and the fact that at least two of the candidates will have Detroit ties: Jerami Grant (who has the inside track on the award), for efficiently exploding in a role as a No. 1 option for the Pistons, and ex-Piston Christian Wood, for putting up massive, All-Star-level numbers in Houston.

More: The rise of Luka happened faster than anyone predicted

5. What is your bold awards prediction?

Herring: I'm willing to guess Giannis Antetokounmpo wouldn't receive any first-, second- or third-place votes in the MVP polling, despite the fact that his numbers are more or less on par with what he did last season, when he won his second straight award. That's more a function of voter fatigue (and "Milwaukee needs to get over the hump" fatigue) plus other guys playing better.

Young: Kevin Durant will win MVP. Granted, the Nets need to win more consistently, but Durant has three things going for him: His team is good, his stats are great and he has an excellent storyline. He has squashed concerns about not being the same player post-injury, and in some ways, looks better. Sharing the load with both Kyrie Irving and James Harden reduces some of his impact and adds the "superteam" stigma to his candidacy, but if Durant leads the league in scoring on near 50/40/90 splits and the Nets are a top-three team, it's a wrap.

Arnovitz: Chris Boucher will be in the mix for both Sixth Man of the Year and Most Improved Player. The Raptors have been high on their backup big man for a while, but a deep rotation at center in recent years relegated him to spot duty. Now the first big off the bench for Toronto, Boucher is playing 24 minutes per game, draining 3s and swatting shots at an impressive rate. He has hit a rough patch of late, but if he can sustain his early-season exploits, he'll appear on a lot of ballots.

MacMahon: At least two major awards will go to the small-market Jazz. I've already mentioned Snyder as a serious Coach of the Year candidate. It will be hard to deny Rudy Gobert his third Defensive Player of the Year if he continues to dominate as he has so far this season. And the Sixth Man of the Year conversation starts right now with Jordan Clarkson, who leads all full-time reserves in scoring (17.9 points per game) with a true shooting percentage (.610) that looks like a typo coming from a guy with a gunner's reputation.

Marks: That Luka Doncic finishes outside of the top five in MVP voting. Doncic is a triple-double candidate every time he steps on the floor, but he is also a turnover waiting to happen (six games of five or more giveaways). Plus, the Mavericks are more of a candidate for a spot in a play-in game instead of a top-six finish.

How to watch the Caribbean Series on ESPN Deportes

The latest edition of the Caribbean Series begins Sunday in Mazatlan, with established big league stars such as Yadier Molina and Robinson Cano in tow despite Mexico's struggles to control the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Series, first played in 1949, this year pits the champions of six Latin American winter baseball leagues. Organizers in Mexico are sidestepping federal recommendations calling for no fans in favor of municipal and Sinaloa state criteria, which allow up to 45% capacity at Mazatlan's Teodoro Mariscal Stadium.

Molina, the longtime St. Louis Cardinals catcher and current free agent, highlights Puerto Rico's representative, Criollos de Caguas. It's the second Caribbean Series for the 38-year-old -- a postseason addition to Caguas' lineup -- and first since 2007, when he was on the roster of the Gigantes de Carolina.

Also participating in Mazatlan will be Cano, who is suspended for the 2021 MLB season after testing positive a second time for performance-enhancing drugs. Cano, also 38, will suit up for Domincan Republic powerhouse Aguilas Cibaeñas, joined by Cardinals All-Star right-hander and longtime Molina battery mate Carlos Martinez.

Dominican entries have won 20 Series titles, more than any other country, and took home the trophy last year with Toros del Este's run. The Series' first phase is a round-robin format among the six teams, followed by the semifinal doubleheader on Feb. 5 and the championship game on Feb. 6.
