New Surface Awaits Super DIRTcar Series At Volusia

Published in Racing
Thursday, 28 January 2021 15:30

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – The Super DIRTcar Series returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at Volusia Speedway Park kicking off five straight days of big-block modified action.

The Series helps ring in 50 years of prestigious DIRTcar Nationals history with expanded purses and a brand new racing surface.

The big blocks start with a four-pack of 30-lap features worth $4,000-to-win to set up a $5,000-to-win 50-lap feature finale. The purse has also been expanded to increase the amount to start each feature to $300 Tuesday through Friday and $350 on Saturday.

Plus, the half-mile dirt oval now has a new surface, which has been raced on already by the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series and has received high praise from the racers.

Three-time Big Gator champion and seven-time Super DIRTcar Series champion Matt Sheppard, from Waterloo, N.Y., knows not to haul south with any assumptions about Volusia from one year to the next. He’s ready to add to his eight-win DIRTcar Nationals victory count.

“Volusia is certainly another animal compared to most of the tracks we’ve been to,” Sheppard said. “I’ve been going to Volusia for a long time now. It’s tough. It’s a tough place to get figured out from year to year. It seems like you go one year and you think you’ve got a handle on it. You go back the next year and everything changes. I don’t know what it is about the place but there are definitely certain guys that run really well down there and certain guys that seem to struggle. I think I’ve had it a little bit of both ways. Last year was one of the years I struggled. Hopefully, we can turn that around this year.”

Sheppard earned a place in the DIRTcar Nationals top-50 drivers list, which included drivers from the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series, World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series, DIRTcar UMP Modifieds and Super DIRTcar Series.

Despite coming from various racing backgrounds all premier dirt racers want a Big Gator of their own to take home, signifying they won the championship of their division.

“The Big Gators are in my basement with a bunch of my other trophies. I kept a few of the little gators but everyone loves them so I gave a few of them away to fans and crew members,” Sheppard said. “I’ve got a trophy shelf across the top of my shop and there is a Big Gator up there along with one of the stuffed animal gators. Whenever kids come over to my house they are always intrigued by the big bronze gator on the floor.”

That’s one crowded trophy shelf. It never hurts to have a Big Gator to keep the rest in line.

Flames temporarily moving AHL team to Canada

Published in Hockey
Thursday, 28 January 2021 15:29

The Calgary Flames are temporarily relocating their American Hockey League affiliate from California to north of the border due to cross-border travel restrictions as a result of COVID-19.

The team announced Thursday that the Stockton Heat will play this season in Calgary's Scotiabank Saddledome. That will give the Flames easier access to their players during the pandemic. The seven Canadian NHL teams are not crossing the border during the regular season this year.

The Heat will join the Belleville Senators (Ottawa), Laval Rocket (Montreal), Manitoba Moose (Winnipeg) and Toronto Marlies (Toronto) in the Canadian Division. The league says the division schedule will be released in the coming days.

The move leaves the Vancouver Canucks (Utica, New York) and Edmonton Oilers (Bakersfield, California) as the lone Canadian teams with American-based AHL affiliates this season.

Kane out 'a few weeks' after injuring both ankles

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 28 January 2021 14:56

Tottenham Hotspur star striker Harry Kane is expected to be out "a few weeks" after injuring both ankles in his side's 3-1 home loss to Liverpool, Spurs manager Jose Mourinho told reporters.

Kane was subbed off at half-time after twice going down in the first 45 minutes.

"Two ankles, the first was a bad tackle, it was Thiago [Alcantara], the second one I didn't know well. But two injuries in both ankles, the second one worst than the first one," Mourinho said after the match.

"A few weeks," Mourinho said about how long Kane would be out. "I don't know. There are some players you can't replace."

With a busy period coming up, starting with Sunday's trip to Brighton and Hove Albion and then a home clash with Chelsea next week, Kane's absence would be keenly felt.

Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip also suffered an ankle injury in the match, deepening an already worrisome injury crisis at the back for Jurgen Klopp's men who entered the match without regulars Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

"If you have a center-half available who is a reasonable price, and who is of the quality we need, send me a message and I will go for it. It's not about [just signing a player]," Klopp said of possibly signing reinforcements ahead of the winter transfer deadline.

"It's about doing the right stuff, we can't just bring a body in, that doesn't help. Bodies, we have -- we have good kids, Nate [Phillips] did exceptionally well, Rhys [Williams] has done well when he's played."

Call off the search -- Liverpool's front three are back.

Jurgen Klopp had to wait more than a month for a Premier League as his misfiring forwards -- Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah -- endured a spell so lacklustre it led to genuine questions about their durability in defending the title.

Those doubts are not silenced by Thursday's 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur but the sight of Firmino and Mane finding the net -- five days after Salah scored twice in Liverpool's FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Manchester United -- could not be more timely with the challenges to come.

- Liverpool ratings: Mane 8/10 as champs get back on track
- Spurs ratings: Lloris 5/10 for lapses on night to forget

"It was good, it was necessary as well," said Klopp. "It was a good moment to show a little bit. We are still here, which is good to know.

"What I saw today it's not about shape or form it's about who we are. That was us. Second half especially it was us, it was a massive fight. The main difference is we score the goals, that helps not only for results but the momentum in the game.

"We missed massive chances against Burnley, tonight we knocked a wall down -- that's good. It is easier to lose [confidence] that's how it is, but it is possible to get it back as well. It is not a light you can switch on and off. You have to show it in the right moment."

The offensive emergence comes a crucial point as the Reds face in-form West Ham United on Sunday before games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City, Leicester City, RB Leipzig and Everton. It is a run that cannot be negotiated without Liverpool's attacking triumvirate rediscovering something approaching their best.

Luckily for Klopp's side, the trio looked more like their old selves on an evening which represented a stern test of the visitors' resolve after failing to win any of their past five Premier League games.

As for Spurs, Jose Mourinho was typically cautious in his gameplan and have enjoyed many fine days embracing the Portuguese's pragmatism. Yet there was a sense that he handed the initiative to a Liverpool team keen to play their way back into form.

Spurs lined up with a three-man defence and Matthew Doherty operating at left wing-back. Mourinho rued the absence of Sergio Reguilon in the build-up and it was easy to see why: Doherty is a competent defender but he does not offer the same pinpoint delivery as Reguilon, instead opting regularly to shift the ball back in field when in a position to make space for a cross.

Tottenham sat off Liverpool in their tried-and-tested contain-and-counter approach. The importance of the first goal is paramount when adopting this style and Spurs thought they had it when Son Heung-Min raced clear from Harry Kane's pass -- that combination again -- and slotted past Alisson. Replays showed he was fractionally offside. Only in the VAR era.

Mane had already had a good chance before that and was a constant thorn in Tottenham's side, with Serge Aurier eventually hauled off at half-time for his failure to deal with the threat. It was Eric Dier who made the mistake for Liverpool's opening goal, however, seemingly leaving Mane's cross to Hugo Lloris only for the ball to drift between them both and leave Firmino with a tap-in.

It was the Brazilian's sixth goal of the season and Liverpool's first league goal in 482 minutes of football. In that time, they managed 93 shots without success.

Kane had been limping for much of the first half after appearing to roll his ankle early on and he did not emerge for the second period. An injury to Kane is what they fear most in these parts -- Mourinho's initial prognosis was vague beyond suggesting to broadcasters "a few weeks, I don't know" -- and Spurs seemingly never believed they could get back into this without him.

Mourinho went to a back four, replacing Aurier and Kane with Harry Winks and Erik Lamela. There was encouragement with Joel Matip adding to Liverpool's defensive problems by limping off with an ankle ligament injury, replaced by Nathaniel Phillips. But Spurs failed to settle in the confusion, Mane shot, Lloris parried and Trent Alexander-Arnold rifled home to double Liverpool's lead.

Mourinho was furious on the touchline, his gameplan shot to pieces as Spurs had to open up. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored a superb 20-yarder to halve the deficit but they failed to mount exerted pressure. Salah had a goal ruled out by VAR for a Firmino handball in the build-up before Mane took advantage of poor defending from Joe Rodon to net the third which counted.

Mourinho kep back-up striker Carlos Vinicius on the bench all night and only gave Gareth Bale nine minutes to make an impact.

Spurs' best games under Mourinho have been founded on minimising individual defensive errors while Son and Kane maximise the counter-attacking moments with ruthless efficiency. With Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez dropped to the bench, Mourinho appears still to scrambling for his most cohesive unit with Dier the mainstay and an ever-changing cast of characters around him.

The need for a new centre-back this summer is obvious. Mourinho was keen to defend Rodon afterwards, stating "he'll play the next game for sure" and that he is "not a coward" in ever shying away from possession, but he admitted: "It is a performance totally affected by defensive individual mistakes.

"One thing is mistakes, another thing is not got be good enough. That is a different story. I don't say that at all, everybody has to assume responsibilities."

They were well short here at both ends of the pitch, despite Liverpool missing Fabinho as a makeshift centre-back and arriving here low on confidence and wounded pride after their recent run.

They leave reinvigorated after what will feel like a cathartic evening for Liverpool, for none more so than the fabled front three who are missing in action no longer.

Rivera's family says WFT coach is cancer-free

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 28 January 2021 14:59

Washington Football Team coach Ron Rivera was declared cancer-free after a checkup Thursday, according to tweets from his wife, Stephanie, and daughter, Courtney.

Stephanie Rivera tweeted, "Prayers have been answered. Thx to all the Drs & nurses who 'Coached up' @RiverboatRonHC and me and gave us the winning game plan to defeat cancer. The PET scan said it all, cancer you lost this fight! #RiveraStrong"

Courtney Rivera tweeted that she had "just gotten off the phone with mom and dad leaving the hospital @RiverboatRonHC is officially cancer free!!!"

Courtney Rivera works for Washington's social media.

Ron Rivera announced on Aug. 20 that he was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer and needed to undergo seven weeks of treatment during the season, which included three rounds of chemotherapy and proton therapy five days a week.

He ended his treatment on Oct. 26. That day, a video captured the moment when he walked down the hallway of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute flanked by cheering medical personnel -- all wearing black "Rivera Strong" T-shirts -- on either side, culminating in his ringing of the bell to signify the end.

Though his prognosis was good from the start, the treatments took a toll. He needed to use a golf cart during practice and his energy level decreased. But he only missed three practices and never missed a game, though he admitted one week early in the season he was close to stopping. However, he pushed through.

He did have to adjust his days; he'd take naps throughout the day -- after videoconference sessions with reporters, for example. His wife or daughter would drive him home in the late afternoon or early evening as fatigue overwhelmed him.

"At times you get nauseous," he said in October. "At times your equilibrium is messed around with, almost a sense of vertigo. And then the nausea. It hits you at anytime, anywhere. But the fatigue, going out to practice it limited me, and that bothers me because I can't coach the way I coach."

He lost 36 pounds and weighed 232 at one point -- six pounds under his playing weight with the Chicago Bears in the 1980s.

"I was amazed. Usually our patients, halfway in, stop working," Dr. John Deeken, the oncologist and president of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, told ESPN in November. "Most of our patients toward the end of their treatment are very close to needing to be hospitalized because there are so many complications."

Ron Rivera and Washington were rewarded as it won the NFC East. Washington won five of its last seven games to finish 7-9 before losing to Tampa Bay in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Players said throughout the season that watching Rivera battle cancer helped inspire them. The coaches said it made a difference.

"This team, watching him, understood when he said we're going to have opportunities and we're going to win and we'll change the culture; they saw it firsthand because they saw what he'll go through," said assistant defensive backs coach Richard Rodgers in December. "He stayed consistent in what he wanted done."

Ron Rivera has said he'd like to become an advocate for affordable health care. His brother Mickey died of pancreatic cancer in 2015.

"After going through it and seeing just how expensive it is ... you think, 'Gosh, how can people afford this that aren't in the situation or the position that I'm in?'" he said in November. "That's really helped to shape my views, just saying and thinking to myself we need to have some sort of affordable care in the United States for everybody."

Kluber excited to join Yanks; DJ relieved to return

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 28 January 2021 15:09

NEW YORK -- Limited to one inning in two years, Corey Kluber believes his ability will show with the New York Yankees.

"I consider myself to be healthy at this point. I'm not rehabbing anything or tending to any issues with anything lingering or anything like that," the right-hander said Thursday, a day after finalizing an $11 million, one-year contract. "I'm basically at a normal stage of my offseason right now."

Kluber completed his contract on the day AL batting champion DJ LeMahieu finished a $90 million, six-year contract to remain in pinstripes.

"It's no secret that I wanted to be back with the Yankees, I wanted to be back in New York. It was frustrating at times because it took so long," the relieved second baseman said. "I just think the whole free agent market in general was just slow."

A three-time All-Star who turns 35 on April 10, Kluber joins a new-look rotation that includes returnees Gerrit Cole, Deivi García and Jordan Montgomery along with Jameson Taillon, who was acquired from Pittsburgh last weekend after missing most of the past two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Kluber won the 2014 and 2017 AL Cy Young Awards with Cleveland, going 56-20 and over the 2016-18 seasons. He was hit on the right forearm on May 1, 2019, by a comebacker off the bat of Miami's Brian Anderson and finished 2/3 with a 5.80 ERA in seven starts, then was traded to Texas. Kluber tore a muscle in his right shoulder in his Rangers debut on July 26, ending his season after one inning. The injury healed without surgery.

"That was extremely frustrating time for me, but I don't think I ever got down on myself," Kluber said. "I think that it's probably more of overcoming the mental aspect of it as opposed to physical ... getting out of that rehab mindset where you're trying to work through things or feel for things."

A three-time All-Star who is 98-58 with a 3.16 ERA in 10 seasons, Kluber has worked with Eric Cressey, who started last year as New York's director of player health and performance.

With age, Kluber has been prepared to make changes his his preparation.

"The biggest thing with those adjustments is listening to my body when something is telling you something, you got to listen to it," he said. "I think that there are times when you have to be smart and probably not try to have that mentality just to push through, push through, push through. I think that there's times when you're going to get in a little more treatment or maybe back off."

He already has prepared for reporting to the Yankees by shaving his beard to comply with a team rule.

"It feels a little bit naked but I'm getting used to it," Kluber said.

He is one of a few additions to the Yankees, who traded reliever Adam Ottavino to Boston and have a pending $2.5 million agreement with Darren O'Day, a bullpen switch that helps them remain below the $210 million luxury tax threshold. In addition, Luis Severino is expected to return at some point this season from Tommy John surgery last Feb. 27 and Domingo Germán is expected back from a domestic violence suspension that caused him to miss last season.

New York said goodbye to Masahiro Tanaka, who announced Thursday he had agreed to a two-year contract to return to Japan with the Pacific League's Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.

LeMahieu joined the Yankees for 2019 and was thrilled to stay put and try to gain New York's first title since 2009.

"This is just a group I wanted to be a part of. This is this is an exciting group and we need to get over that hump," he said. "There's one goal with the Yankees and that's to win the World Series. And in my years we haven't been able to do it. So I wanted to be a Yankee, but I want to be part of this group even more. It's just an unbelievable group. I had guys reaching out all offseason: What's the holdup? What's going on? And I really appreciated that."

LeMahieu, 32, gets $15 million per season. The deal includes a full-no trade provision during the first two seasons and a limited no-trade provision starting after that giving him the right to block trades to five teams. He would have the right to approve a trade starting after the 2023 season, under the collective bargaining agreement, as a 10-year-veteran who has spent five years with his current club.

Also a three-time All-Star, LeMahieu had 10 homers and 27 RBI in the shortened 2020 season after hitting .327 with 26 homers and 102 RBI in his first year in New York. He doesn't think the Yankees fell short by much last season, when they lost a five-game Division Series to the eventual AL champion Rays.

"I think we ran into a really hot Tampa team. I thought we were better than they were," he said. "I think they just made a couple of plays that we didn't, and that was the bottom line and moving forward. We've got to make those plays, whatever it is. I just felt last year they just had our number and it was disappointing. And I really think we're going to get over the hump here."

KBM Adds Drew Dollar To Truck Series Roster

Published in Racing
Thursday, 28 January 2021 13:08

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Kyle Busch Motorsports announced Thursday that Drew Dollar will make eight starts behind the wheel of the organization’s No. 51 Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year.

Mardy Lindley will serve as Dollar’s crew chief.

Dollar’s Tundra will feature primary sponsorship from Sunbelt Rentals, JBL and another sponsor to be named later.

Dollar will make his Camping World Trucks debut Feb. 12 behind the wheel of the No. 51 JBL Tundra in the season opening event at Daytona Int’l Speedway. The other races on his schedule will be Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway (May 28), Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth (June 12), Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway (June 18), Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway (Sept. 16), Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway (Sept. 24), Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (Oct. 2) and the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway (Nov. 5).

The Toyota Racing Development driver finished fourth in the ARCA Menards Series championship standings in 2020 after recording one win, four top-five and 14 top-10 finishes across 20 starts.

Dollar led 40 laps en route to his lone series victory at Talladega Superspeedway last June. He also finished inside the top 10 in both of his ARCA Menards Series starts in 2019, including a sixth-place finish in his series debut at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. In addition to his part-time Camping World Truck Series schedule this season, he will also run 13 races on the ARCA Menards schedule this year.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to be taking the next step in my career running a part-time schedule in the Camping World Truck Series this year with Kyle Busch Motorsports and Toyota,” Dollar said. “I have a lot of hard work ahead of me learning a new series and driving a Tundra for the first time, but I’ll be surrounded by some of the best people in the industry. I look forward to the challenge. Thank you to all of my partners for supporting me and making this opportunity possible.”

“We’ve put an eight-race schedule together for Drew this year that will allow him to continue his development as a driver as he makes his first venture into the Camping World Truck Series,” said team owner Kyle Busch. “Drew’s schedule includes several tracks where he was successful in the ARCA Menards Series last year, including Talladega where he won and Daytona where he finished third. We felt it was important to have him in the truck for stretches of races to give him consistent seat time and help the communication between him and Mardy Lindley. As a former driver himself, Mardy has been a great mentor to several young drivers in recent years, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he and Drew can do together this year.”

ASCS Confirms Elite North & Great Plains Slates

Published in Racing
Thursday, 28 January 2021 14:00

TULSA, Okla. – The ASCS Elite North Non-Wing Series and new ASCS Elite Great Plains Non-Wing Series calendars were both revealed Thursday afternoon.

Beginning its second season under the ASCS banner, the Elite North Non-Wing Series will encompass 12 dates across Colorado.

The tour will work with the newly-formed ASCS Elite Great Plains Non-Wing Series which will contest eight events in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

“It’s a good thing they’ve set up for the area. With the tracks being so far apart, it’s nothing for races to be six to ten hours away from each other when you start talking about crossing state lines,” said ASCS Scheduling Coordinator Terry Mattox. “This way, it gives the drivers further north something to run for and gives the option to travel if they want to.”

Both tours will have separate point funds, with a two-day weekend at Phillips County and I-76 Speedway in Colorado bringing the two series together on June 18-19.

Looking at the ASCS Elite North Non-Wing lineup, the season runs from April through September, with dates at four Colorado ovals.

Calhan’s El Paso County Raceway will host the bulk of the shows with seven. I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan is set for a trio of nights, with Phillips County Raceway in Holyoke and Pueblo Speedway in Pueblo each with a single night.

Moving over to the ASCS Elite Great Plains calendar, Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., will open the slate on June 11, with partner track Gillette (Wyo.) Thunder Speedway following on June 12.

The tour will conclude the three-day weekend Casper Speedway the following night.

Following the tour’s combined showing with the ASCS Elite North field, Independence Day Weekend at Sweetwater Speedway in Rock Springs, Wyo., on July 3-4 gives way to the tour’s final show at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte, Neb., on July 17.

Both tours are under the supervision of Jeremy Lovelady.

Bohn & North American Motor Car Back With On Point

Published in Racing
Thursday, 28 January 2021 14:00

DENVER, N.C. – On Point Motorsports has confirmed that sponsor North American Motor Car and driver Danny Bohn will both return to the team for the upcoming NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season.

North American Motor Car sponsored the team in 10 races last season, highlighted by Bohn’s top-10 finish at Martinsville Speedway in the fall.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to return to On Point Motorsports and again drive the No. 30 North American Motor Car Toyota Tundra,” said Bohn, who has recorded two top-10 finishes in 13 Truck Series starts. “Starting a race season off at Daytona is something I’ve always dreamed of and this year it’s finally going to happen.

“We are very happy to continue this relationship with North American Motor Car, who are really taking it to the next level with the extensive vehicle inventory and numerous automotive services they offer,” Bohn added. “They are also very proud Americans who really connect with NASCAR fans.”

The North American Motor Car paint scheme will again feature Sierra Delta, a national nonprofit that connects service and comfort dogs with veterans. Last season, North American Motor Car ran a national sweepstakes raffle to benefit Sierra Delta and one lucky fan won a custom, off-road truck. North American Motor Car is planning to run a similar promotion later in the season.

“North American Motor Car is extremely excited to be teamed up with Danny Bohn and the On Point Motorsports No. 30 Toyota Tundra NASCAR Camping World Series Truck in our third season with them,” said NAMC’s Chief Operating Officer Andy Hill. “We believe it is going to be a breakout year for Danny and On Point Motorsports and we are extremely proud to be a part of it.”

Before joining the Truck Series, the 32-year-old Bohn raced on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. Bohn rose to prominence in 2012 when he finished second in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour standings, also claiming Rookie of the Year and Most Popular Driver honors. Bohn followed that up with the 2014 modified track championship at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

“Danny has transitioned extremely well from the modified circuits to the NASCAR Camping World Series,” said team owner Steven Lane. “Since the time I saw him at Bowman Gray, I knew he would be a good fit with the type of competitive team we are building at On Point Motorsports.”

Dustin Johnson, Sei Young Kim and Bernhard Langer were voted 2020 players of the year on their respective tours by the Golf Writers Association of America.

Johnson earned the honor on the PGA Tour thanks to his four tour wins in 2020, including the Masters Tournament. The world No. 1 earned 93.6% of the GWAA vote.

“It’s a great honor to again be voted as the Golf Writers Association Player of the Year,’’ said Johnson, who also won the award in 2016. “I appreciate my many friends in the media and their recognition of my performance. This means a lot to me.”

Kim earned her first GWAA POY award, earning 69% of the vote. The South Korean, who was also the LPGA Tour’s points-based Player of the Year, won her first major last year at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. She followed that with a victory at the Pelican Women’s Championship.

“I am very pleased and honored to receive such an important award,” Kim said. “It is an amazing feeling to get recognized for my efforts and dedication.”

Langer won the award on the PGA Tour Champions for a sixth time

The 63-year-old had one win and 12 top-10 finishes in 15 starts. He also led the money list to edge Ernie Els for the writers’ POY honor. Langer got 41% of the vote to 35.6% for Els.

“It is a great honor and wonderful recognition to have been named the GWAA Senior Player of the Year 2020,’’ Langer said. “When experts of the trade/game, like the Golf Writers, vote for you, it means so much more and I am thrilled to receive this special reward again.”
