CHICAGO -- Will Venable is a busy man these days.
The new manager of the Chicago White Sox is learning his way around the organization. He is talking to his new players and working with the front office on its offseason plans.
As Venable assembles his first coaching staff with Chicago, he has at least one name in mind: Grady Sizemore, interim manager for the White Sox at the end of last season.
"There'll be a role for him," Venable said Friday after slipping on his new No. 1 Chicago jersey during a news conference at Guaranteed Rate Field. "I think it's going to be about how to best utilize him and how to best complement his skill set."
Venable, 42, has never been a major league manager before, and he is stepping into a daunting rebuilding project. Pedro Grifol was fired in August and Sizemore ran the team the rest of the way as the White Sox went 41-121 to break the post-1900 major league record for losses in a season.
Venable was an associate manager for Texas for the past two years, helping the Rangers win the 2023 World Series. He left that position last month when he agreed to take the top job in Chicago, and it sounds as if everyone is getting along swimmingly -- so far.
"There's so many decisions that go in every day as a general manager," White Sox GM Chris Getz said, "and what I've noticed in this short period of time is I'm comfortable calling Will about any one of those subjects and talking it through. And that's what I was looking for. I was looking for a partner in this, and I think it's a pretty good sign that it's already as natural as it is."
Venable and Getz are both former big leaguers. Venable was an outfielder during his nine years in the majors with San Diego, Texas and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Venable's father, Max, played parts of 12 seasons in the majors, and also was a minor league manager and coach.
Will Venable said the adversity he faced as a player -- the difficulty of making it to the majors and staying there -- helped prepare him for his new job's challenges.
"I feel like William's a good communicator," Max Venable said, "so I feel like that's a good trait to have. I just feel like, too, that's he's pretty honest, and I feel like players just want someone that's honest with them."
Before he became a big leaguer, Will Venable played baseball and basketball while majoring in anthropology at Princeton. He was an All-Ivy League performer in each sport.
Venable said his education at Princeton has helped him throughout his baseball career. He wrote his college thesis on the cultural differences of baseball in Japan and the United States.
"I think now when you're talking about communicating with a diverse set of people and what I had to do as a player and communicating with people from different places, it's absolutely helped me," he said.
Venable also has worked for the crosstown Cubs and was Boston's bench coach in 2021 and '22, managing the Red Sox for one game in 2021 when Alex Cora attended a graduation and for six in '22 when Cora tested positive for COVID-19. Venable interviewed with the White Sox before Grifol was hired in November 2022.
This time, it worked out.
"This is an opportunity to continue to help build and be part of the foundation that's already being laid here," Venable said. "And I know that every one of these jobs is challenging. Every group going into every year has their work cut out for them, and I'm excited for the challenge that this group presents."
Also Friday, the White Sox announced they had agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Justin Dunn, who will report to big league spring training.
PHILADELPHIA -- Preston Mattingly, a son of former star first baseman and manager Don Mattingly, was promoted to general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.
Sam Fuld, the GM since December 2020, is studying for his Master of Business Administration degree at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and will become the team's president of business operations when he receives his degree in May 2026.
Fuld will oversee business operations departments after his graduation and until then will share GM duties with Mattingly.
Mattingly, 37, played in the minor leagues from 2006 to '11, then went to Lamar University, where he captained the basketball team and received a bachelor's degree in 2016. He worked for the San Diego Padres from 2017 to '21, rising to coordinator of major league advance scouting and game planning.
He joined the Phillies as director of player development in September 2021 and was promoted to assistant general manager of player development last November.
In addition, Luke Murton was promoted to director of player development and Edwar Gonzalez to director of hitting development.
Don Mattingly was a six-time All-Star for the New York Yankees from 1982 to '95, then managed the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to '15 and the Miami Marlins from 2016 to '22.
Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews will miss his second consecutive game Friday night, sitting out Toronto's clash with the visiting Detroit Red Wings because of an upper-body injury.
The captain has been considered day-to-day since he was injured Sunday in Toronto's 2-1 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild. He logged an assist in just over 22 minutes of ice time before leaving the game.
Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said Matthews could play Saturday in a home clash with the Montreal Canadiens.
"We're going in the right direction," Berube said. "It's good news."
Matthews, 27, has recorded 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) in 13 games this season.
The forward led the NHL in goals scored for the third time in four seasons in 2023-24, tallying a career-high 69 to go along with 38 assists in 81 games.
Matthews has recorded 660 points (373 goals, 287 assists) in 575 career games since Toronto selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft.

Manchester United first-team coach Darren Fletcher has been given a three-match extended touchline ban for confronting the match officials during last month's 2-1 win at home against Brentford, the Football Association (FA) said on Friday.
The former United midfielder was also fined 7,500 ($9,705.75) for his protests when Brentford scored the opener at the stroke of half-time to go 1-0 up.
United protested when Ethan Pinnock scored when the home team were reduced to 10 men after referee Sam Barrott instructed Matthijs de Ligt to go to the touchline to stem the bleeding from a gash on his head.
United's then manager Erik ten Hag and assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy received yellow cards for their protests but Fletcher went one step further and confronted the match officials at half-time near the tunnel.
"The coach acted in an improper and/or confrontational manner and/or he used abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official and the referee and/or assistant referees," the FA said in a statement.
Fletcher admitted to the charge of misconduct but denied that he had been abusive. However, the regulatory commission said they had proof of his actions and imposed the sanctions.
Norwich forward Josh Sargent underwent surgery for a groin injury and will be out for two months, the second-tier English club has confirmed.
The 24-year-old United States international has scored four goals in nine games this season for midtable Norwich.
"He has had the surgery and it will be eight weeks from there, which was Monday or Tuesday," manager Johannes Hoff Thorup said ahead of Saturday's home game against Bristol City. "Now it's just about rehab and nice and easy getting back in."
Sargent missed the early part of last season because of an ankle injury but returned in late December and scored 16 goals in 30 appearances.
The Missouri native joined Norwich ahead of the 2021-22 Premier League season and remained with the club after it was relegated at the end of that campaign.
Sargent started for the USMNT in new head coach Mauricio Pochettino's first game in charge against Panama last month. But he will now miss the team's two-legged Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal against Jamaica on Nov. 14 and Nov. 18.

Inter Miami head coach Gerardo Martino agreed with forward Lionel Messi that the team has committed "silly mistakes" throughout the season, but insisted players can overcome the errors to triumph in the final game of Round 1 in the best-of-three playoff series against Atlanta United.
"We've made a lot of mistakes that we can avoid, because many times they were silly mistakes to put it nicely," Messi said in a recent interview. "That cannot happen during the playoffs, because the mistakes can cost you and get you eliminated."
Though Inter Miami gained the advantage in the series by winning the first game 2-1 in Fort Lauderdale, defensive errors cost the Herons as they lost the second game 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
"It is true that we have had some mistakes that almost permanently have cost us goals," Martino said on Friday in reference to Messi's comment.
The playoff series is now tied, forcing Inter Miami to rise to the occasion during the decisive third game on Saturday night back at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
"There are times that teams make mistakes that go unnoticed because they do not end up inside the goal. And we have had some mistakes that put us in a difficult situation, and better yet within the same game. But it is also true that we have had a team that has overcome these types of situations and that throughout the year we have solved it in the best way," Martino said.
But the team will face Saturday's challenges without two key figures in the midfield, as Sergio Busquets and Yannick Bright sit out the final Round 1 match.
Martino confirmed Busquets remains unavailable due to a knock he suffered during the first playoff match against Atlanta United on Oct. 25.
"Busi is still suffering from the consequences of the blow he had in the first game," Martino said.
"It depends on other issues because it is a blow, it is not a muscular issue that can be predicted with respect to the amount of time. It is an issue that must be addressed but I will not go into detail because it is a medical situation."
The head coach added, however, that Bright would likely return to the roster should Miami advance to the conference semifinals.
After a historic 2024 MLS campaign, winning the Supporters' Shield and setting the league record for most points recorded in a single season, the pressure is on Miami to perform.
"We know what we have in the team and that we are the favorites to win the Cup," said Leo Campana. "Obviously all the teams that come here or that play with Inter want to show what they are capable of. We are a team that is all over the world today and I think everyone wants to play against us. That is why I believe that all players give their all every time they play against Inter."
Comebacks king as Buttler's England take on star-studded West Indies
Big picture: Can West Indies deepen England's white-ball funk?
There will be added significance, then, to his comeback for five T20Is in the Caribbean. In the last 12 months, Buttler has overseen two doomed World Cup defences - and the window is already narrowing for England to get their white-ball show back on the road in time for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February. (Whether the schedule is helpful in that regard - England have the same split of three ODIs and five T20Is in India as part of their build-up to the tournament - is a moot point.)
Buttler's enthusiasm for England duty should have been sharpened by time spent on the sidelines - as well, perhaps, as his release by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL auction later this month. He joined up with the squad in Barbados earlier this week, with interim head coach Marcus Trescothick describing him as "progressing really nicely" ahead of the T20Is.

In the spotlight: Andre Russell and Jos Buttler
Team news: Big names back for both sides
The T20 big guns look set to regain their places in West Indies' XI - although there might be a temptation to include some top-order insurance in the form of Shai Hope or Roston Chase. Romario Shepherd was fit to be included in the squad after being diagnosed with cramp following his tumble in the third ODI.
West Indies: (possible) 1 Brandon King, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 4 Rovman Powell (capt), 5 Sherfane Rutherford, 6 Roston Chase/Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Akeal Hosein, 9 Gudakesh Motie, 10 Matthew Forde, 11 Shamar Joseph
England: (possible) 1 Phil Salt (wk), 2 Jos Buttler (capt), 3 Will Jacks, 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Jacob Bethell, 6 Dan Mousley, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Jamie Overton/Saqib Mahmood, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Jofra Archer, 11 Reece Topley
Pitch and conditions: Something for everyone - possibly including rain
"You walk into breakfast and you see the guys that they bring back and there's some real superstars - Pooran and Russell. They're a really strong team and they've been a strong team for a really long time and have guys who are well suited to the format. It's a great challenge."

Newest Commander Lattimore won't play Sunday
ASHBURN, Va. -- Newly acquired Washington Commanders cornerback Marshon Lattimore won't play this week and running back Brian Robinson Jr. did not practice Friday in preparation for Sunday's game vs. Pittsburgh.
Both players are dealing with hamstring injuries and neither played last week -- Lattimore missed his last game with New Orleans before the team traded him Tuesday; Robinson sat out Washington's win at the New York Giants.
Robinson's game status for the Commanders (7-2) game vs. Pittsburgh (6-2) will be updated late Friday afternoon. He was limited Wednesday and Thursday. Also, kicker Austin Seibert kicked in practice Friday after being limited Thursday and not practicing Wednesday. The team signed Zane Gonzalez to the practice squad as an insurance policy if Seibert can't kick because of a hip injury.
Washington traded three picks to the Saints to acquire Lattimore, sending them third- fourth- and sixth-round selections and getting back a fifth. But the Commanders were clear from the beginning that they weren't sure when Lattimore would be able to play.
"We're always going to side on the health of the player first," Washington coach Dan Quinn said.
Lattimore missed the Saints' Week 2 game with Dallas this season because of a hamstring injury. Washington wants to make sure he's healthy for the rest of the season.
Washington plays at Philadelphia on Thursday. Lattimore did work with trainers on a separate field during practice today, but Quinn said they'd have a better assessment Monday of his chances to play vs. the Eagles.
Robinson already has missed two games this season, including because of a knee injury in Week 6 vs. Baltimore. But he still leads the Commanders with 461 yards rushing and six touchdowns.
If he can't play, Washington will use a rotation at running back, starting with Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols. The Commanders also could promote another running back off the practice squad.
They have elevated Chris Rodriguez Jr., three times already so if they do so again, according to the NFL rules regarding the practice squad, he would have to remain on the active roster if promoted again. They could also opt to elevate Michael Wiley off the practice squad.
NY sportsbooks rake in record $2.3B in October
New York sportsbooks accepted $2.3 billion in bets in October, a new monthly record for any state.
New York sportsbooks took $2,321,095,638 in bets in October, surpassing the previous record of $2.1 million wagered in November 2023, according to figures released Thursday by the New York State Gaming Commission.
It's the second consecutive month and fifth month overall that more than $2 billion has been bet with New York sportsbooks. No other state has eclipsed the $2 billion mark in a month.
New York sportsbooks won a net $176.4 million off the record October handle, a nearly 14% decrease from September's $204.7 million win. October featured deep playoff runs by the New York Yankees and New York Mets, as well as the start of the NBA and NHL seasons.
The betting public also had a more successful run in October in the NFL. DraftKings said in announcing its third-quarter earnings this week that "customer-friendly sport outcomes" in October caused it to adjust its revenue guidance for the fourth quarter.
Only 15 NFL underdogs pulled outright upsets in October, compared to 26 in September.
