Stroman confident he'd fit if traded to Yankees

Published in Baseball
Monday, 24 June 2019 16:33

NEW YORK -- Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman likes pitching in the Bronx, and he'd love it even more if he weren't there to face the New York Yankees.

Asked Monday at Yankee Stadium about trade speculation connecting him with New York, Stroman stopped short of saying he was hopeful for a deal but insisted he could handle the city's notoriously tough stage.

"I love it. New York's like the mecca of the world," Stroman said. "I love excitement. I love bright lights. I love competition. I love pressure.

"I've always loved pitching here. Even though I haven't always pitched fairly well here, I've always enjoyed it. Yankee lineups are brutal. They're hard to kind of navigate. But yeah, I love the spotlight. The bigger the moment, that's where I've always wanted to be."

The 28-year-old Stroman is from Long Island and has family in the area. He was expecting about 40 family and friends for Monday night's series opener between Toronto and New York, including his brother's youth baseball team, which came early to watch batting practice. Stroman pitched six scoreless innings against the Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park and won't throw during this three-game series.

With the AL East-leading Yankees on the prowl for starting pitching before the July 31 trade deadline, Stroman is a sensible target. He's set to become a free agent after this season and is off to a strong start, with a 3.04 ERA. He's 5-9, but that reflects more on the rebuilding Blue Jays, who came into the day 31-47.

Stroman is 2-5 with a 6.37 ERA in nine career starts at Yankee Stadium.

The right-hander said the trade talks have been "hard to kind of grasp," but he has had time to let it set in.

"Obviously, it's hard to ignore all the rumors," he said. "I don't think I'm at a point where they're going to sign me long-term. I've kind of come to terms with it, but it's not something I'm thinking about daily."

Asked if he would prefer a trade to New York, Stroman laughed, said "no comment" and then elaborated carefully.

"I don't know," he said. "I don't really want to think about it like that just because I have no idea how it's going to play out or where it's going to go. I don't want to get all my eggs in one basket."

He's certain he could handle the Bronx, though.

"I'm built for this," he said. "Anybody can say whatever, but I'm built for the bright lights and the moment. I'm not scared of it. I've never been. I'll take that ball each and every time you put pressure on. I love it."

Hard-throwing Cards closer Hicks has torn UCL

Published in Baseball
Monday, 24 June 2019 14:51

St. Louis Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow.

The Cardinals announced the injury Monday but did not disclose whether Hicks will undergo surgery, saying that they are "determining the next course of action."

Hicks was removed from Saturday's 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels in the ninth, after 1 1/3 innings.

The 22-year-old has thrown 211 pitches at least 100 mph this season, over 100 more than the next-closest player. Last year, Hicks threw 673 100 mph pitches and became the only player in the past 10 years to throw 500 or more 100 mph pitches in a single season.

Hicks is 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA and 14 saves this year.

ESPN survey: MLB fans back more safety netting

Published in Baseball
Monday, 24 June 2019 16:50

Major League Baseball fans support installation of more safety netting at ballparks by an overwhelming majority in a survey commissioned by ESPN.

Fans agreed by a margin of 78 percent to 22 percent that netting is a good idea because it protects fans who often do not have enough time to react to foul balls or bats that fly into the stands.

The survey was conducted last week by Hart Research Associates.

The opponents to netting said it is a bad idea because it obstructs fans' views, and because fans know and understand the risks of getting hit.

The survey was commissioned after an incident May 29 in Houston in which a 4-year-old girl was injured when she was struck by a foul ball off the bat of Cubs outfielder Albert Almora Jr. during a game between the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros. On Sunday, after the survey was taken, a woman at Dodger Stadium was taken to a hospital for precautionary tests after being struck in the head by a foul ball.

The results of the survey showed that Americans are more divided on whether MLB teams should be held responsible when a fan is hit, with a slight majority saying teams should not be held responsible. By a margin of 55 percent to 45 percent, respondents said teams should not be responsible, with MLB fans, avid fans and those who attended games more strongly supporting the idea.

Since 1913, every ticket to a major league game has included a disclaimer saying the holder of the ticket assumes all the risks inherent to the game. Called the "Baseball Rule," it has made it nearly impossible for fans injured at games to successfully sue teams or MLB.

Following recommendations from MLB, by the start of the 2018 season all 30 teams had expanded their protective netting to at least the far ends of the dugouts after several fans were injured by foul balls in 2017.

Earlier this month, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, reacting to the incident in Houston, said he did not expect teams to make changes to the netting around ballparks during the season, but said he expected conversations to continue about whether the netting should be extended.

The White Sox and Washington Nationals recently announced they will extend their netting to the foul poles, with the Nationals saying they will make the changes during the All-Star break.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Monday night that they would extend their safety netting, likely this season.

Mets' Callaway calls media back in to apologize

Published in Baseball
Monday, 24 June 2019 14:26

New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway continued to have issues with reporters on Monday, after being fined for a confrontation with a reporter in the clubhouse on Sunday.

When he initially met with media on Monday, Callaway offered no apology for the incident, calling it a "misunderstanding."

"Obviously, for things like that to happen, it's always a misunderstanding. I'm sure there was no malintent by either, it's just something that happened and we have to move forward obviously," Callaway told reporters.

Later, the manager added, "Billy Martin punched a reporter one time. It's part of this game. ... Hey, I'm a passionate guy about baseball, I'm a tough competitor. Sometimes you'll see it with the umpires, sometimes you'll see it with the players. The thing is you guys don't need to see it directed toward you guys. You guys have a job to do, I understand that, always understood that, and you guys don't need to see it directed toward you. That's the number one thing."

About 90 minutes later, Callaway brought the media back into his office to formally apologize for what happened and note that he had apologized to the reporter involved in private.

"It's something I'm not proud of," he said.

Earlier in the day, Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen announced that Callaway and pitcher Jason Vargas, who was also involved in the incident, had been fined. The GM did not comment when asked whether the Mets considered suspending Callaway or Vargas. The Mets do not expect Major League Baseball to further punish either Callaway or Vargas, according to Van Wagenen.

The dust-up with beat writer Tim Healey of Newsday occurred after the Mets blew a late lead in their 5-3 defeat to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. There was no physical contact.

The incident followed a tense postgame news conference, when reporters asked Callaway repeatedly about his decision to stick with reliever Seth Lugo during the eighth inning instead of going to closer Edwin Diaz. Lugo allowed a go-ahead three-run homer to Javier Baez.

After the news conference, Callaway walked past Healey and other reporters in the clubhouse. Healey said to Callaway, "See you tomorrow," and Callaway responded by calling Healey a "m-----f-----." Callaway walked away and then returned, cursing at Healey again and telling him to leave the clubhouse.

"I thought he was leaving for the day, so I said, 'See you tomorrow, Mickey,'" Healey said. "And then he said, 'Don't be a smart-ass.'

"I tried to tell him I didn't mean anything by it," Healey added. "I was just saying, 'I'll see you tomorrow.' And then he said, 'Get this guy out of here,' and that got the attention of Jason Vargas."

Vargas stared down Healey and shouted at him, including saying, "I'll knock you the f--- out, bro," according to a Yahoo! Sports account. He eventually tried to move toward Healey but was held back by teammates, including Carlos Gomez and Noah Syndergaard.

"The situation that happened yesterday I think was unfortunate for all parties," Vargas told reporters on Monday. "An unfortunate distraction. ... The team addressed the situation, the organization made a statement. And that's really all there is to it."

Vargas then left without taking any questions.

Healey said Sunday night that Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon called him "to apologize on behalf of the organization."

Dodgers to extend netting after another fan hit

Published in Baseball
Monday, 24 June 2019 16:42

The Los Angeles Dodgers plan to extend the netting at Dodger Stadium, likely this season, after another fan was hit by a foul ball Sunday.

"We have been talking for some time with different providers and looking at different options," team CEO and president Stan Kasten said Monday, according to the Orange County Register. "Surely we will be expanding netting. I don't know yet the final configuration. Obviously there are some different choices to be made and different products which each come with their own set of challenges."

Kasten said he wasn't sure when the change would happen, but that "I think it's likely" it gets done before the end of the season.

Following recommendations from MLB, by the start of the 2018 season all 30 teams had expanded their protective netting to at least the far ends of the dugouts after several fans were injured by foul balls in 2017.

Earlier this month, reacting to the incident in Houston, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said he did not expect teams to make changes to the netting around ballparks during the season, but he said he expected conversations to continue about whether netting should be extended.

Broady reaches Wimbledon qualifying second round

Liam Broady has advanced to the second round of Wimbledon qualifying, but last year's Wimbledon boys' singles runner-up Jack Draper was knocked out.

British number eight Broady, 25, beat Slovakia's Andrej Martin 6-3 6-1.

Promising British 17-year-old Draper lost 6-4 7-6 (7-0) to Japanese world number 182 Yasutaka Uchiyama.

Broady, who has played in the singles main draw at the All England Club three times, will face the Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.

However, British trio Jan Choinski, Evan Hoyt and Mark Whitehouse also lost in the first round of qualifying.

The 16 players who make it through three rounds of qualifying will earn a place in the Wimbledon main draw.

World number one Barty withdraws from Eastbourne

Published in Tennis
Monday, 24 June 2019 06:22

World number one Ashleigh Barty has withdrawn from the Nature Valley International tournament at Eastbourne with a right arm injury.

The 23-year-old Australian said she needs to "rest and recover" before Wimbledon begins on 1 July.

Barty won her first singles Grand Slam at the French Open earlier in June and became world number one after claiming the title in Birmingham on Sunday.

"It's an injury we've had to manage since I was 16 years old," she said.

"When I have a spike in load it comes up - it's a bone stress injury and I need to look after it, particularly in these first few days. We know how to manage it but it's important to get on top of it straight away."

Barty, who beat Julia Gorges in the Birmingham final, was the top seed at Eastbourne in a women's draw that still includes seven of the world's top 10.

Gorges, a Wimbledon semi-finalist last year, and world number 12 Anastasija Sevastova have also withdrawn from the tournament.

British number one Johanna Konta won her first-round match against Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska on Sunday.

Six girls and six boys along with their coaches participated in the week-long training camp, which featured two table tennis sessions per day, delivered in close cooperation with the CTTC’s coaches and players, including regular fitness and warm-up sessions led by Zhen Chaoying.

During this week of hard work on and off the table, two educational sessions were held: the first one, delivered by Zhen Chaoying, focused on the method of the regular training system at the CTTC and the training system in China in general, which was highly interesting to everyone involved. The second one was conducted by ITTF High Performance Manager Massimo Costantini, outlining and explaining the important factors needed to become a future champion.

During this session, participants were asked to work through some tasks set some days earlier, focusing on the topics of History of the Topspin, History of the Defensive Game, History of Female World Champions, History of the World’s Best Players. The players were divided into four groups, each having a spokesperson presenting their work. This group work held everyone’s attention and brought an element of fun to the educational session.

This inaugural Hopes Selection Camp gave an opportunity to last year’s World Hopes to train and cooperate again, building strong relationships and team spirit across continents. This year’s Hopes Team will be selected from training and competition performance at activities and events during the last year. The 2019 Hopes Team will be announced by the beginning of August.

“Firstly, many thanks to ITTF for their help in the development and performance of younger players. During the past week, we had an excellent opportunity to practice with great players and better coaches: Max Costantini and Zheng Chao Yin. We continue learning every day. Truly, we were very happy this week at the training camp in China.” – Francisco Javier Berzosa (Coach, ESP)

“What a wonderful learning experience for players and coaches at the China Table Tennis College in Shanghai. Led by Max Constantini, with input from the Chinese coaches, the players learned some very valuable tips  over the seven day camp at this custom built table tennis venue with 120 tables on three floors. Great to renew friendships with the coaches that were In Totorri in October.” – Conn Higgins (Coach, IRL)

“It was a mixed workload at the table, following the Chinese everyday, regular work while keeping in mind that we had a competition to prepare, because the camp was also functional for the upcoming ITTF China Cadet & Junior Open. We also dedicated some time to team matches (with the strengthening of team spirit as the target) as well as individual matches as an additional test for a better evaluation. Overall, this was a very good experience in terms of hard work at the table, off the table and developing their mental strength.” – Massimo Costantini (ITTF High Performance Manager, ITA)

“I would like to thank you for the opportunity to participate in this Hopes Selection Camp. All the structure available, gym, hotel, food were of an excellent level. It is also worth mentioning the great work done by Massimo Contantini, in addition to the training sessions, the feedback in relation to each athlete was very valuable. Congratulations on the Hopes Project and I hope to have the opportunity to participate more often in this type of training in the future.” – Jorge Franck (Coach, BRA)

In the Dominican Republic, Sharon Alguetti was beaten at the final hurdle by colleague Kanak Jha (11-7, 11-7, 12-10, 11-6), Amy Wang suffered at the hands of Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz (9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 11-5, 7-11, 13-11), a contest in which she held match point in the deciding game.

Both Kanak Jha and Adriana Diaz, the dominant players in the history of the tournament are now out of the age group; new names will be added to the role of honour. Notably Kanak Jha is the only ever winner of the boys’ singles title; he won at the inaugural edition in 2016 in Burnaby, then repeated the success in 2017 in Buenos Aires, before last year completing the hat-trick in Santo Domingo. For Adriana Diaz, the only difference is that in the girls’ singles event in the Argentine capital city she was beaten in the final by Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi (7-11, 6-11, 11-3, 11-5, 13-11, 6-11, 12-10).

Notably performances but most notable is that last year in the Dominican Republic, the only title not to finish in the hands of the United States was the girls’ singles; in Cancun the Stars and Stripes could well be in line for a full house. Sharon Alguetti is the no.4 seed in the boys’ singles event behind Chile’s Nicolas Burgos, Brazil’s Guilherme Teodoro and colleague Nikhil Kumar. In the boys’ doubles Nikhil Kumar and Michael Minh Tran occupy the no.3 seeded spot; Nicolas Burgos and colleague Andres Martinez head the list, next in line is the partnership formed by Brazil’s Guillerme Teodoro and Rafael Torino.

A prominent United States presence, it is even more prominent in the mixed doubles event, Nikhil Kumar and Amy Wang head the list, Sharon Alguetti and Crystal Wang being the next in the order of merit. Meanwhile, in the girls’ singles competition, Amy Wang, Rachel Sung and Crystal Wang occupy the respective top three seeded positions; in the girls’ doubles Amy Wang and Crystal Wang lead the line ahead Rachel Sung and Rachel Yang, the defending champions.

Similarly in both the boys’ team and girls’ team events the United States is in top spot. Sharon Alguetti, Nikhil Kumar, Victor Liu and Michael Minh Tran form the boys’ team selection being listed ahead of Chile’s Nicolas Burgos, Sebastian Gonzalez, Andres Martinez and Jorge Paredes. Brazil’s Lauro Sebold, Guilherme Teodoro, Eduardo Tomoike and Rafael Torino reserve the third seeded spot.

In the girls’ team competition, Rachel Sung, Amy Wang, Crystal Wang and Rachel Yang comprise the United States squad; Canada’s Sophie Gauthier, Ivy Liao, Joyce Xu and Benita Zhou form the second seeded outfit. Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero, Mercedes Mendizabal and Hidalynn Zapata occupy the third seeded position.

Outfits finishing in the top three places in each of the boys’ team and girls’ team events, qualify for the 2019 World Junior Championships to be staged later this year in late November and early December in Bangkok, Thailand.

Tense times, top three seeds fall in round four

Romania’s Bernadette Szocs, the top seed experienced defeat at the hands of Luxembourg’s 56 year old Ni Xia Lian (11-7, 11-8, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7), a player who has a distinct liking for Tokyo.

It was in that city in 1983, some 12 years before Bernadette Szocs was born, when Ni Xia Lian made her World Championships debut. She was a member of the gold medal winning Chinese team and partnered Guo Yuehua to mixed doubles success.

“This was a crazy match that made everyone nervous. I had a chance to finish the duel in the fifth game but I lost my focus. In next game, Bernadette was really good but when the decisive fifth game came, I had a better head. Szocs is very young and she improves with each tournament; sometimes more experience could help a little. Everybody comes prepared here, there is no doubt about it but sometimes the pressure is too high.” Ni Xia Lian

Defeat for Bernadette Szocs came after Germany’s Han Ying had proved too secure in defence for Austria’s Sofia Polcanova, the no.2 seed (12-10, 13-11, 13-11, 11-8).

“It was close, because in each game Polcanova commenced with new tactics. She did not play in her usual style and she changed things in each game; that gave her a little advantage but I have a good record against her and I was very confident. I managed to recover every time.” Han Ying

Success for one defender, soon after it was success for another; Russia’s Polina Mikhailova beat Sweden’s Matilda Ekholm, the no.3 seed (11-5, 11-13, 9-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8).

“I never won against Matilda before and we have played so many times against each other; when I managed to win the opening game; that give me slight advantage. It boosted my confidence and I think it affected her game too. She made mistakes on first ball, which is not usual. Also, I had my downs. I lost the second game after I led 10-8. After that I lost third very easy. When we reached decisive game I told myself “yell, shout, do whatever it takes, just win”. I do not know how I managed to win.” Polina Mikhailova

The results mean that Germany’s Petrissa Solja is the highest ranked player remaining in the women’s singles event; in the fourth round, the no.4 seed, she beat Poland’s Li Qian, the reigning European champion (12-14, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 5-11, 12-10, 11-5).
