England bowl first, Lauren Bell and Kiran Prabhu Navgire make debuts

Toss England chose to bowl vs India

England's stand-in captain, Amy Jones, won a delayed toss at Chester-le-Street and opted to insert India in their first match of their three-T20I series against India.

Heavy rainfall earlier in the day had resulted in the start time being pushed back by half an hour, and a green pitch left both captains wanting to bowl first. "There's been a bit of rain," Jones said. "[We want to] have a look at the wicket and hopefully get something out of it early on."

There were changes to the England XI that was beaten by India in their last T20 outing, in the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games - some of them enforced. Lauren Bell, the tall seamer who impressed for Southern Brave during the Hundred, makes her debut in this format, while Bryony Smith and Freya Davies come into the side.
England were already without their captain, Heather Knight, after she underwent hip surgery last month. Her replacement during the Commonwealth Games, Nat Sciver, pulled out of the series last week to focus on her mental health, while Katherine Brunt was rested.
Harmanpreet Kaur said that her side would not be dwelling on their Commonwealth Games victory, and had "prepared for both, whether batting first or second". India also included a debutant in batter Kiran Prabhu Navgire, while Dayalan Hemalatha makes her first T20I appearances since 2019.

England: 1 Danni Wyatt, 2 Sophia Dunkley, 3 Alice Capsey, 4 Amy Jones (capt/wk), 5 Bryony Smith, 6 Maia Bouchier, 7 Sophie Ecclestone, 8 Freya Kemp, 9 Sarah Glenn, 10 Freya Davies, 11 Lauren Bell

India: 1 Smriti Mandhana, 2 Shafali Verma, 3 Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), 4 Dayalan Hemalatha, 5 Richa Ghosh (wk), 6 Kiran Navgire, 7 Pooja Vastrakar, 8 Sneh Rana, 9 Deepti Sharma, 10 Radha Yadav, 11 Renuka Singh
