First Medallists Known as Fourth Day Concludes in Granada, Notable Names Depart

The fourth day of play, Wednesday 9th November, at the Andalucia 2022 World Para Table Tennis Championships in Granada resulted in notable names departing the arena as the first medallists in the men’s and women’s singles events became known.

Major casualties accrued in the women’s singles; top seeds departed at the quarter-final stage.

In class 5 Korea Republic’s Jung Younga was beaten by colleague Kang Oejeong (11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 1-11, 11-9), Serbia’s Borislava Peric-Rankovic lost to Turkey’s Irem Oluk (11-9, 5-11, 11-8, 6-11, 12-10); in class 11, Ebru Acer, like Irem Oluk from Turkey, found Japan’s Maki Ito in determined mood (11-8, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6).

Defeat for top seeds, there were also defeats for second seeds.

In the men’s singles, Ukraine’s Lev Kats bid farewell in the opening round of class 9, he lost to Frenchman Lucas Didier (11-4, 12-10, 11-7). One round later, in class 6, the host nation’s Alvaro Valera experienced defeat at the hands of Chile’s Cristian Dettoni (11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7).

Following suit, at the quarter-final stage, in class 5, Norway’s Tommy Urhaug was beaten by Turkey’s Ali Ozturk (11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9); in class 11, Hungary’s Peter Palos found Korea Republic’s Kim Gitae in form (11-3, 16-14, 11-2), Thailand’s Yuttajak Glinbanchuen ended the hopes of Frenchman, Florian Merrien (12-10, 11-8, 12-10).

Similarly, in women’s singles class 6, Germany’s Stephanie Grebe departed proceedings in the round of the last eight, her nemesis being Poland’s Katarzyna Marszal (11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6).
