A Welsh club says it has “risen from the ashes” following a successful squashaton after nearly being forced to fold.

Cardigan squash club on the west Wales coast was formed in the 70s but was on the brink of closure in 2019 before a new committee was formed, funds were raised and new members joined the resurrection.

The Gwbert club says membership has tripled while efforts have gone into a full refurbishment, new heaters and better facilities. It is situated on the grounds of Cardigan Golf Club, who have been supportive in the squash club’s plans.

They recently staged a 24-hour squashathon and the club has raised around £1,000 as it continues to stay alive.

Councillor Clive Davies said: “It is great to see the club making waves having had grants from Ceredigion County Council in 2021.

“The grants were used for the refurbishment of the roof, ceiling, heating, lighting as well as for the courts themselves, it has made a huge difference to the facility.”

The club refurbishment was also supported thanks to A Place for Sport grant from Sport Wales. The club has two sides playing in the Pembrokeshire league.

Club chairman Peter Wright said: “It has been a really enjoyable event with over thirty people playing over the 24 hours.

“And an additional extra thank you to members from other clubs at Fishguard, Pembroke and Newcastle Emlyn who took part.

“Congratulations again to Cardigan squash club and their brilliant achievement,” said Squash Wales.
