Taijul runs through Ireland middle order to put Bangladesh on top

Tea Ireland 145 for 6 (Tector 50, Campher 34, Taijul 3-35) vs Bangladesh

Bangladesh gained the upper hand over Ireland in the post-lunch session on the first day of their one-off Test in Dhaka, taking three quick wickets, with Taijul Islam engineering a bit of a collapse.
He took two of the wickets to fall in the afternoon, as Ireland lost their way in the span of 18 balls. From 122 for 3, they slipped to 124 for 6 with both the set batters, Harry Tector and Curtis Campher, falling. Taijul and Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled probing lines and lengths to put Bangladesh on top, but, curiously, Shakib Al Hasan hasn't yet bowled.

Lorcan Tucker and Andy McBrine were steady in the remaining 10.1 overs in the session, adding 21 runs for the seventh wicket.

Campher and Tector began the second session with a flurry of boundaries after Ireland had hit just five fours in the opening session, when they lost three wickets as well. Campher got things going with a back-foot punch through the covers off Shoriful Islam, before Tector struck a short Shoriful ball through midwicket. They struck six more fours before Tector reached his fifty in his first Test innings.

But it all changed in the following over. Mehidy removed Tector with a classical offbreak, going through the batter's front push. It ended an important partnership between Tector and Campher, worth 74 runs in 19.5 overs. Within the next eight balls, PJ Moor had given a simple catch to Tamim Iqbal at mid-off, having scored just one, off Taijul, who also removed Campher, with a delivery that went with the angle and struck the batter halfway up his pads.

Ireland found the going tough in the first session, having returned to their Test whites after close to four years. It's not like they did badly, but captain Andrew Balbirnie, who batted after winning the toss, might have wanted fewer wickets to fall.

Shoriful removed Murray Commins in the fifth over, hitting his front pad as the left-hand opener struggled to bring his bat down in time. James McCollum, the other opener, fell soon afterwards, edging Ebadot Hossain to second slipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who fumbled slightly before completing the catch on the second attempt.

After Bangladesh wasted two of their reviews, Taijul trapped Balbirnie lbw for 16. The Ireland captain missed with the sweep shot, which struck him in line.

Ireland, playing just their fourth Test match, handed debuts to six players: Ben White (also playing his first first-class game), Campher, Graham Hume, Tector, Tucker and Commins. It's also a Test debut of sorts for Moor, who is playing his first Test for Ireland after having played eight for Zimbabwe.
